- Giuseppe Castiglione was a missionary artist and Imperial Painter in the Qing court who served three generations of Chinese emperors for 51 years. His cross-cultural style skillfully blended Western realism with the rich symbolism of Chinese art, granting him a place in China’s art history.

This is brilliant and the editing was exquisite also. All of the visual artifacts (not just those painted by Castiglione) were obviously carefully chosen and beautifully framed. Very excited for your next video!
damn when the summer palace ruins hits i got destroyed
Total gem in TH-cam! The portrait of the 3 emeperors are on every single Chinese history textbook, yet the artist was never mentioned. Who would have known that the artist was actually an Italian missionary!
Italians were far superior in the arts.
@@kuchikopi4631 Europeans should continue proliferating Asian culture.
Some of the paintings in the video might not be by Castiglione.
The famous portrait of Kangxi (beginning of video), for example.
Also worth mentioning is this 1699 portrait of Kangxi. It's in a Europeanized style, painted 16 years before Castiglione arrived in China. Supposedly, Castiglione's first recorded work in the hybrid style was made in 1723, during Yongzheng's reign

Anyone who isn't an ignorant and uncultured peasant
"yet the artist was never mentioned"
yeah wonder why xD
It's really beautiful when Western art and Eastern art mix.
Are of Indo-Europe and the Sinic-World developed in such isolation to each other, but when they come together they're absolutely stunning.
Well if you’re using broad categories like this, then you’re actually going to see way more contact between the indo-European and the Sinic worlds! Take the Tocharians for examples, who are Indo-European and lived very close to the Chinese. To this day, a lot of words in Chinese actually come from this Indo-European language, cf. 蜂蜜 (honey), which comes from Tocharian and is therefore related to European words such as “miele” (Italian), мёд (Russian) and “mead” (English)! Even 狗 could be related to English “hound”!
This, and many other links.
"Isolation", yeah bro it's not like the silk road existed since antiquity or that the Romans and Chinese were fully aware of each other and even sent embassies
Wouldn't this merging have already happened with Buddhist art in China?
@@virginiamontaldo440 not just that… Buddhism arriving to China already constitutes the two world meeting. A lot of Chinese translators rendered Sanskrit words in Chinese
It’s always us Italians finding ourselves in the Far East
Oh, how I WISH poor Castiglione had had the time/inclination to keep a journal….What an amazing life . What an extraordinary artist ❤
He probably had but it was lost in history. Usually all Europeans , especially missionaries would keep a minimal journal as a log of events.
This is such a good way to convey history. I can only applaud all the work that goes into making videos of this quality.
damn Castiglione's art was the first time I got chills from any artwork literally the best art I have ever seen
The Emperor was right.....such great artist cannot be found again!
the "zheng" part in Yongzheng is pronounced like the "j" from words like "just" or "judge" followed by the "ung" part from words like "sung" or "hung". it should be perfectly pronounceable by english speakers, and yet is butchered all the time because of the funky ass pinyin spelling
He was a brilliant artist. I am grateful to have heard this fascinating piece of history. I think the intimate details recorded in letters and journals are as important, if not more so, as the official records and are essential to understanding international relationships today. I look forward to this new series.
I am surprised you didn't show my favorite from that period - a painting of the emperor in the wig and robes of a European monarch like Louis the Sun King.
Do you know the name of this painting?
@@Danksigmalord no, i just saw it once, and wondered what the story was behind it... now with this youtube, I can guess that the emperor might have requested it.
Go search for emperor Yongzheng in european dress: you should find what you're looking for
If anyone knows the painting, I would also like to see it.
@@Danksigmalord That is 雍正半身西服像 (Portrait of the Emperor Yongzheng with European Costume and Wig) which painted by Castiglione in 1727. Because Yongzheng like cosplay, he asked Castiglione to paint him as a European.
Love how you showed me how important Art History can be. This is an amazing way of teaching this often disregarded subject.
The Jesuit mission to China in the eighteenth century was absolutely amazing - China was introduced to the latest western music, art and science. It is reported that a baroque orchestra was sent to China and the emperor was so totally captivated by the music that he ordered them to play on and on and that his own Chinese musicians learn the techniques. This is the era when the latest astronomical and chronological discoveries made in Europe were introduced to China and is on the record that the traditional Chinese calendar was "reformed" by a Jesuit priest - the traditional calendar that is still used in the Chinese world today!
Breathtakingly beautiful, and of course the Artist is Italian…

I love Giuseppe Castiglione's art, and this video was a great and profound tribute to such a talented artist, who was able to take the best from the European and Chinese traditions and fuse those elements together in unparalleled masterpieces.

Amazing video, can't wait for the next one!
This is a lovely beginning. Really a glorious way to spend almost 20 minutes. What a sensitive and well-edited video with excellent use of music. Everything was a seamless fit. I am very excited about this channel. Best wishes and I hope the rest of the videos are as beautiful and interesting as this one. This was an excellent place to begin. Bravo!
Congratulations on a beautiful and auspicious beginning.
Qué gran comienzo!! Este formato es todo un acierto. El video me ha resultado muy atractivo por ese enfoque personal que une delicadamente unas evocadoras imágenes y una bella y poco conocida historia. Fantástico trabajo. Adelante!!!! Queremos ver otro!
Nice video, I subscribed! One thing for the future; the sources used for the video should be listed in the description. It would give the videos, as well as the channel itself, much more confidence and professionalism. It feels like most youtube channels don't really do this, which is a shame. So it would be nice if this new channel would do it right from the beginning.
Edit: Also, I have no idea about how the algorithm works but the title of the video is quite vague
I agree! If it’s easier, even a Google Docs link that contains the references would be very appreciated.
Very interesting! This channel is off to a great start.
I must compliment the amazing quality of paintings and related.
this was such a lovely watch!

Insanely good video, time froze as I watched it. Wow and thank you.
What an incredible video! You have to make more! I wish you best luck with this channel. What is the painting that you used for your profile picture?
Thanks a lot! It's "The Eye Of Providence" by Bro. William Preston (1742-1818).
That was really good!
This was awesome. I know very little about Chinese history, but videos like this make me wonder about ancient history.
Really great video!
Loved it! Subscribed 🥳
Fantastic video, even my family loved it
I would be really interested in your examination of japanese art in the context of an island regularly shaken by earthquakes (hint: wearable art -- Kosode, junihitoe, kimono, uchikake, etc.)
Absolutely astonishing!
What a great video you made, and what an excellent and touching lecture you used as narrative. Of course, I was acquainted with Castiglione's name, I was even capable to recognize a few of his paintings, but this video has inspired me to ,ake a decent research about his works and life, This is why I thank you very much. I ask you kindly if you know books, bios of catalogs where I can address my starting research. For instance, I wonder if he ever came back to Europe, and this is the least of my concerns about him....
This is amazing!
I love learning about art history.
Very interesting content, thank you from Japan!!
Good job mate
lovely video and blend of humanity
Wonderful.
More please
That was excellent.
Very beautiful, very sad. There is a selflessness to Castiglione's life, in that he seems to give up his devotion to spreading the Catholic faith and concentrates more on creating this unique moment of beauty. It was appreciated by neither side. The West wrecked his most beautiful work as a "punishment", and if you listen to Chinese propaganda about the Summer Palace they don't really care that it was designed by a European - they just care about the insult.
I so enjoyed this story.
Deserves way more views
Interesting niche art history. Not something I've explored before
