My favorite part of this song is Dennis Hopper's storytelling. To this day I still have chills up my spine, as I did when I was a ten year old girl (I was ten when Demon Days was dropped in 2005).
@user-mu6kj8rn8c Yes, holy shit. I write lyrics myself and I just wish I could write like this. The story is so beautifully written, poetic but you can still understand the meaning of it
when I was a kid this had a very heavy presence when I listened to it, more especially because I had no visuals to go with it since I first hear it on my older sister's I pod. But the narration was powerful because I could still imagine the imagery. And I felt chilling just as those happy monkeys by the end. And at that time it became the most powerful creation of a dark and illuminating story. and it rang through out my head that night and every time I remembered it.
I was super scared of this song as a kid, but I couldn't stop listening to it. Something about the instruments and the story telling aspect fascinated me. Bc I didn't grow up speaking English though, I couldn't understand the song until later. My motivation to learn English originally came from songs like these bc I wanted to decipher their meaning.
I always assumed the strange folk were tactical military people stealing land from natives for resources but the tribal god hated that and killed them all
i always thought it showed the greed of capitalism, and how they only wanted to make money off of the gems, but now that we know there's a mountain in vietnam that saw some action, and the way they happy people are dressed, it does make more sense
Ben Staunton the creator of Gorillaz has stated that this song is about mining/fracking oil. Basically, he said "There will be lots of holes left after all the oils gone. But those holes can't stay empty forever"
When I was a child, I would call this song "The Story Song" because I had no idea what it was called, and on the case I recognized it as the one with the much longer name than all the others, or as track 13 (maybe not 13 but I'm pretty sure)

I believe that's a part of it but I also believe that it's about the people of the town being to happy and never experiencing a negative thing which blinds them to the corruption of the strange folk.
it's about cultural imperialism, about the USA raping this world's culture, land, people, traditions, history. and how after all that greed they are causing the world to crumble and die. Yeah, The USA delivered violence all over the world, from the middle east to Asia to Africa to all of America. violence, violence. and that violence is gonna blow back right into the USA's face. they will be the last standing of course. but the USA caused the world to be like this. we could be happy. but some people want empires and violence and to put a bullet in everything decent. that's what the song is about :3

It wasn’t just the strange ones at fault here, there were some faults in the happy people too. The Happy people were so isolated from the world they were ignorant enough to not noticed what the strange ones were doing, and when fear came they let it prevent them from actually going into the 🏔 mountain to see what was really going on. They didn’t listen to their get/the sense of dread that was telling them what was happening to their mountain ⛰. The lesson out of this: if isolation is left long enough the disaster will catch up to them. (That’s how I see it.)
Personal idea about this song that i havnt seen anyone mention, but as strange as it may be i actually think this could be about the towns used as targets in the nevada desert during the atomic bomb trials. The fact that "there was no screams" and the interference of people in camos make me think it was there. At the start it states that they were "obscured by clouds" which i think could represent nuclear fallout

God, I could listen to this song for days. The person reading the story has an amazing voice, not to mention the beat and actual music part, could be a part of a separate song all together its so good.
As a kid I had a childrens book. It told the story of a colony of mice who lived on an island. One day a mouse finds a stone glittering gold (in the book all the golden stones were made out of plastic gold foil). He takes it out to the other mice and shows them where he found the stone and soon a goldrush begins. Now you could choose between two stories: One in which the mice start ravaging the mountain of their island, taking out more and bigger stones until their caves are full of gold stones and the mountain holier than a swiss cheese. Or the the other story, in which the mouse who found the first stone slows the other mice and reminds them that they should give back to the mountain. He uses a sharp stone to carve a sun into a stone the size of the gold he took out of the mountain and brings it back to the place he took the gold from. The others follow his lead and they decide, that everyone should have some gold, but to always give back to the mountain. In both stories a storm begins and while in the second story all the mice are sheltered in their caves with their golden stones, giving them light in the dark, in the first ending the storm breaks down the mountain, which collapses ontop of the mice. They are now exposed to the elements and all their gold is not helping them. The mouse who found the first stone quitely begins to carve a sun into a stone, while trying to take cover under some boulders left from their mountain. I always have to think about this story when I listen to this song, which is probably my favourite Gorillaz song (maybe Desole or El Manana are also my favourites).
As a kid, I thought of this "place" as heaven, and happy folk being angels, strange folk being devils. God was the mountain, and mining it is like, well I can't think of anything. But the fire was a plague. But yeah, this is underrated.
I created an entire DnD species of monkey after this song. Their ancestors being happy and incline with nature. The strange folk were greedy adventurers who triggered an ancient sleeping entity, wiping out this ancient species. Now only a few of them exist.
I love reading peoples thoughts on this song. I think they're all right. every time I listen to this song each factor symbolizes something different. the happy folk are always a different type of people, the monkey always symbolizes something new. the stand folks intensions are always led by new fixation. but the story remains the same. CHILLING. when I was young my dad told me to pay attention to this song for it was his favorite of the gorillas and I think to this day its my favorite song ever. really good story telling and emotion put into it.
I’d like to see an animated short one day that is just this story Just the visualization of the final words would be a hell of a thing to see “There were no screams, there was no time. The mountain called monkey had spoken. There was only fire. and then, nothing”
The ending gives me a chilling feeling but at the same time it's like a melancholic feeling and it makes you think, it's not a bit complicated to explain
Los nativos veian como deidad a su montoña, cuando fue invadida por la gente extraña y hecha mella a favor de los recursos minerales en ella, la deidad estalló contra los extraños que nada hicieron por respetar aquella cultura. Una exquisita critica a la colonización.
I think I first listened to this when I was around 8 or 10 and only saw the story about some nice people and some creepy monsters who erupted a volcano. But now, Jesus Christ this is dark.
For me this song is a life lesson on what greed actually does. It only brings unhappiness and hurt and slaughter. The Mountain named Monkey is a metaphor for our life
We watched this at my school a year ago or two ago. It was about who's side would be like if the happy folk deserved their island, or if the other side should have taken the mountain. It was really cool hearing this
Jeez such a good song, good to go back and give these songs a listen. I hope to see this featured in or at least referenced to in the gorillaz animated series (if its ever done)
it sounds like they lived near a dormant volcano, then when people began to mine at the thing, someone must have hit a gas or lava pocket or something and caused it to go active once more.
I used to think that this song was meant to represent war, the happy folk are innocent civilians, the strange folk were soldiers or the enemy country, midway through the track the civilians realised what was going and and “the monkey” is a nuclear bomb (Hiroshima, Pearl Harbour, ect)
I always pictured the strange folk mining three holes that made the shape of a face, and when the volcano erupted, it looked like fire coming out of the mountain (Monkey’s) hear
What this song means to me is that no one in this world can make a decision that doesn't affect someone else for good or bad. People say "It's my life! It's my decision! I can do as I please!" Yes, you'd be right on all three counts. Live you're life how you please but don't dismiss or be ignorant of the fact that others will be affected by the decisions we make. If you choose not to care, also your choice but don't pretend that no one will be affected by it.
Wait. Pokemon Gen 3 came out around 2004-2005. Thats the Pokedex that included Sableye. Sableye is a pokemon known for being in caves. The strange folk look like Sableyes. damon do you play pokemon
It's such a well known fantasy trope that one day a society finds some magical resource that grants them unimaginable prosperity but then they delve too greedily and too deep, use too much of the magical resource and find out it has some nasty long term side-effects on a scale much larger than they're equipped to deal with. Imagine you're an Alien looking at Earth and tell me that's not exactly what happened with us humans finding oil and gas.
Meanwhile, down in the town, the happy folk slept restlessly, their dreams invaded by shadowy figures digging away at their souls...such badass imagery
"There were no screams. There was no time. The mountain called 'monkey' had spoken. There was only fire. And then... nothing"
Eternal Anims Its kind of remind me of Hiroshima and Nagasaki ,i mean, people doesnt even get time for scream...
it was a volcano, some people might have been able to scream at least for a second

Isn't that an adventure time quote
"Oh a little town in the USA
The time has come to see
There's nothing you believe you are

Did you call me? no"
I just love every detail to this song, the wind sound, the guitar, the choir, the synth, the echo on "space" and just the feeling overall

Lyrics
Once upon a time at the foot of a great mountain
There was a town where the people known as Happyfolk lived
Their very existence a mystery to the rest of the world
Obscured as it was by great clouds
Here they played out their peaceful lives
Innocent of the litany of excess and violence
That was growing in the world below
To live in harmony with
The spirit of the mountain called Monkey was enough
Then one day Strangefolk arrived in the town
They came in camouflaged
Hidden behind dark glasses and no one noticed them
They only saw shadows
You see without the truth of the eyes
The Happyfolk were blind
Falling out of aeroplanes and hiding out in holes
Waiting for the sunset to come people going home
Jump out from behind them and shoot them in the head
Now everybody dancing
The dance of the dead
The dance of the dead
The dance of the dead
In time Strangefolk found their way
Into the higher reaches of the mountain
And it was there that they found the caves
Of unimaginable sincerity and beauty
By chance they stumbled upon
The place where all good souls come to rest
The Strangefolk they coveted
The jewels in these caves above all things
And soon they began to mine the mountain
It's rich seam fueling the chaos of their own world
Meanwhile down in the town
The Happyfolk slept restlessly their dreams Invaded by shadowy figures
Digging away at their souls
Every day people would wake and stare at the mountain
Why was it bringing darkness into their lives?
And as the Strangefolk mined deeper and deeper into the mountain
Holes began to appear
Bringing with them a cold and bitter wind
That chilled the very soul of the Monkey
For the first time the Happyfolk felt fearful for
They knew that soon the Monkey would stir from it's deep sleep
Then there came a sound
Distant first it grew into castrophany
So immense that it could be heard far away in space
There were no screams there was no time
The mountain called Monkey had spoken
There was only fire
And then nothing
Oh a little town in the USA
The time has come to see
There's nothing you believe you are
But where were you when it all came down on me?
Did you call me? no
after listening to this track for years
I get it.
It's about oil mining in the Middle East.
I wasn't allowedto listen to it til now I see why, so that I can understand it
Really? Even before oil mining I'm pretty sure the Middle East was not ignorant to violence or excess, or the outside world.

It was really cool hearing this
I originally thought that the people in camouflage were 2-D, Murdoc, Noodle, and Russel. This makes much more sense than what I thought.
I’ve been trying to find this song for years it still gives me chills
Jeez such a good song, good to go back and give these songs a listen. I hope to see this featured in or at least referenced to in the gorillaz animated series (if its ever done)
finally a video I needed
This song sounds very western, like an old story that your great grandpa used to tell you as a little kid
The tales of old show us a path, a path that has shown that no matter where you are there is always despair
Man, jamie's art style is the best
“A monkey!” - Dennis Hopper, the Super Mario Bros. Movie (1993)
it sounds like they lived near a dormant volcano, then when people began to mine at the thing, someone must have hit a gas or lava pocket or something and caused it to go active once more.
No shit
by the sound of it, more like unstable Uranium.
It’s about oil
It’s a fucking cartoon song nicolla tesla
I used to think that this song was meant to represent war, the happy folk are innocent civilians, the strange folk were soldiers or the enemy country, midway through the track the civilians realised what was going and and “the monkey” is a nuclear bomb (Hiroshima, Pearl Harbour, ect)
That title goes hard as fuck. Sounds like something I'd imagine in a fever nightmare. I love it
My dad showed me this when i was like 6 or 7 and i found it again
sableye.
Spicy 夜 Subaru lol i thought the same thing too
I found a Pokefan
I always pictured the strange folk mining three holes that made the shape of a face, and when the volcano erupted, it looked like fire coming out of the mountain (Monkey’s) hear
Ahh I've never heard this one! I love the vibe of it.
RedSwordfish how did you not listen to demon days. love that album to the moon.
Sick narrating + Fire beat
Gotta say 0:47 is kinda somber but my favorite part
Chicken Joystick yes , Jamie hawlet no damon albanr
Also the Happy Folk look like Woopers
Well, now here you go: th-cam.com/video/m4urTgWLcis/w-d-xo.html
Hope you like it
still listening on 2023
It's such a well known fantasy trope that one day a society finds some magical resource that grants them unimaginable prosperity but then they delve too greedily and too deep, use too much of the magical resource and find out it has some nasty long term side-effects on a scale much larger than they're equipped to deal with. Imagine you're an Alien looking at Earth and tell me that's not exactly what happened with us humans finding oil and gas.
Never has life been musicly described so well 2❤ aka pocket full of change
This is a great metaphor for the different energies walking the Earth.
Damn this track is good. Can't believe it took a year to hear this.
i have never been so intrigued by a song
Dennis Hopper .. genius

I had no idea they made this
I literally looked up "the dance of the dead"
how do you not recognize 2Ds voice
young man this was before I was introduced to the gorillaz
and I lied
I actually contemplated looking up dance of the dead until I forgot about it
Been listening to this song for over ten years and only yesterday found out it's acting legend Dennis Hopper doing the vocals
Meanwhile, down in the town, the happy folk slept restlessly, their dreams invaded by shadowy figures digging away at their souls...such badass imagery
I love that guitar at the end..
This song gives me Adventure Time vibes. Still underrated.
This is song tells about people not knowing what horrible things is happening around them and goverment lying to them.
all dislikes are Ice Coming Out Of A Monkey’s Head
straight banger
Why only 3,600 Views?
thats how you know its good.
there only so many in this world intellectual enough to understand good art, and you lucky to be one of them :)
Nekogami-Crystal probably because it's a third party uploader
Ahmad Fakhri 259k
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaassss 😎
Honestly this song is best listened to while sleep deprived on a coach or plane journey lol.
The Strangefolk look like something straight out of Invader Zim
I THOUGHT SO TOO
One of the only couple of good songs on this album, absolutely love it!
I love 2D's voice. It sounds so sweet.
I love this song
This is my favorite song
Reminds me of a picture book. Which makes sense because more than half of the song is just a story being told.
To me this is about the natives perspective of all the boom towns mining uranium for WWII
That's just my take
It has the weirdest and best bass line they’ve ever made
