    Great video! Replaced the valve cover gasket on my E36 M3 and have no leaks. Not shown on the video, but I added a light bead of Red Permatex RTV sealant at front of the engine where the VANOS unit or front mounting timing chain cover meet and also at the rear.

    How long should it take to do this job, if a mechanic is doing it, versus a weekend warrior who hasnt done this before? I am wondering how much labor a garage would charge to do this job. Seems like a simple enough job, but a little scary for a first timer.

    I believe bmw made these valve cover gaskets out of a composite. Thus them getting brittle, I literally had a chunk pop out today. I'll be doing this tomorrow probably

    Is this a head gasket change or is that totally different?

    • @aldude999
      @aldude999 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The valve cover gasket is different. It's higher up on the engine than the head gasket.

    • @TheColesjeff12
      @TheColesjeff12 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea man this is totally different. This is for the plastic cover over the cams and timing chain. A head gasket is in between the head[ where you cams, valves and vanos unit] and the block[ pistons and oil pump] are located.

    Hi there, I suspect my spark plug gasket needs replacing - however, my head gasket is relatively new. Can I re-use my head gasket or do I need to replace both gaskets when opening up the engine? Thanks!

    • @AutoBodyEverything
      @AutoBodyEverything 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      if your valve cover gasket is more brittle than flexible or if you have to peel it off change them. they are soft rubber when new and become hardened with heat and time. the kit brings both valve cover gasket and the inner sparkplug tube gaskets for around $30 so just buy them! also make sure you get the valve cover bolt seals that are used on the bolts that tighted the valve cover. you might have to ask for those as an addition because not all gasket kits give you those seals. torque specs for the valve cover bolts are 86 in lbs. make sure everything is clean and spotless. no silicone is required at all for this application.

    And why you didn't use any gasket maker RTV ?

    • @johnnyjohnson5235
      @johnnyjohnson5235 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because he used a fel pro gasket they don't recommend rtv

    Do you know the spec torque of the CAM bearings to bolt up the bearing for e36 328i?

  • @evane.6511
    @evane.6511 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    So the bolt in the back left of the cover is completely rounded out. It's to the the point to where the flower tool isn't even catching. Any ideas on how to get it out??????

    Does anyone know if there are smaller washers on the four center studs that go under the gasket?

  • @leqthai

    do you need to drain the engine oil before doing this?

  • @garybuster8624
    @garybuster8624 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Are you suppose to use silicone on the gasket or not to prevent leaking?

    • @AutoBodyEverything
      @AutoBodyEverything 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      i beleive not. just be sure its all cleaned up and tightened to spec. 86 in lbs

    Does anyone on here have a diagram of how the vacuum hoses next to the iac valve connect? And what is that black canister under the intake?

    • @blackonblackseven

      Black canister under the intake is your power steering reservoir

    • @bruceallen6637
      @bruceallen6637 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +blackonblackseven I know of the powersteering. there is a vaccuum canister that says oad on one end and on the other end says vaccuum. both ends have a connector for vaccuum lines
