@AncientActivist he lives off a street called Dundee in Jerome. Google earth it you will know you've found it when you see the rows of grapes( where he spread his mom Judith's ashes) . He did a great job hiding it from the road. And it all obviously fenced in etc.
@@Jay-sg7rf You say it's not deliberate, and then go on to say that he becomes characters on stage. That's describing a deliberate action. He was portraying himself deep in a drug induced state, which he deliberately planned ahead of time. I saw there them the first time opening for the Rollins band at a small club in Houston. I was working security. I had never heard of Tool. When he opened his mouth I turned my back to the crowd and watched in awe! He was over powering the PA! Danny is also one of the best drummers ever. It was an amazing night
And just keep in mind from a vocalist perspective. He sounds like that, with that much control and power, hunched over and moving like that. Absolute commitment to making you feel EVERYTHING he wants you to.
His behavior during this performance was him being in character of someone under the influence (supposedly his friend, for which this song is about). This song is dealing with addiction and the overwhelming feeling that in order to perform at one's best artistically, one must be under the influence. The addiction is stalking the addict. The lines: "I am just a worthless liar I am just an imbecile I will only complicate you Trust in me and fall as well I will find a center in you I will chew it up and leave I will work to elevate you Just enough to bring you down" is actually coming from the perspective of the drug/addiction speaking to the addict. And in the end, the addict would reject any attempts to fight the addiction to continue to achieve artistic greatness. The addict succumbs to the pressure by saying "I want, what I want"
Maynard is a GOAT, Former Army, Black Belt in BBJ, has his own gym, his own wine, and fronts Tool, A Perfect Circle, Pucifer, and Children of the Anachronistic Dynasty. Legend!
Maynard's live persona is part of his artistic expression, using it to convey aspects of the music proper, he switches things up with different costumes and personas for different musical endeavours, but he hasn't performed 'like this' for most of this century (if not earlier). Nowadays, he mostly sings in silhouette at the back of the stage, letting the band take the lion's share of the limelight.
Saw them live this summer for the first time, they were incredible! Haven't seen this performance before and when he started belting his voice all my hair stood up & I got chills. Woah, powerful performer.
The 'sleeper', the way he performs this always makes me think of someone who is never sober, like the character he is just got up off the couch the morning after the night before, and is angry at the Sun for rising. So powerful! And OMG love me some Danny C!
Definitely performing in character. The song was written about a friend of theirs who was leaning on substances to cassette their art. And he's becoming that character for the performance. Maynard is a legit genius
"This dude sounds amazing live ." I've seen 3 Tool shows live. It's astonishing how LOUD Tool is, and they still have a clear sound. Their sound techs are just superb. And their light show... I believe Adam (guitarist) handles most of the visuals, but whoever is responsible for the stage lighting is as much a part of the performance as any of the band.
Maynard is a true Renaissance Man, he is an entrepreneur and has vineyards, restaurants, stores. And the lead singer in three bands. I live in the Verde Valley where he lives, Jerome, Cottonwood.

You have heard of method actors, but Maynard was a method performer as a musician. It's not something you see everyday. The song is about a close friend of the band who struggled with addiction. Their friend was an artist who felt he could not be creative without being under the influence of substances. So, Maynard is essentially acting out the disease of addiction, which is why he looks so twisted and possessed. Another thing about Maynard is that early in his career he had a difficult time performing in front of large crowds. So, he would pick a spot somewhere outside of the crowd to focus on to help him avoid getting anxious. 'Sober' is the perfect song to perform for him since he just stares at the same spot the entire song which makes him appear crazy.
1992 I was 16 and Tool hit the scene in my little town in Oklahoma. We got everything a little slower than the rest of the country. Maynard is a genius and in most of their concerts he stands in the back of the stage in the shadows. He doesn’t want to distract from the music. This was filmed at the Reading Festival
The reason his voice is so clear whether he's singing softly or screaming is more about having a great live sound engineer who understands gain structure, compression, limiting and other tricks. I spent decades as a live sound engineer. A good engineer has the ability to make or break your performance.
Maynard runs a very successful winery he created- super disciplined. He is a method performer with a theme for most of his songs-this one is acting the part of the hopeless addict/drunk
He’s artistic. Their concerts are all about art in many forms. He is kind of playing the character that’s in his videos. I watched him play in black underwear with a black stripe painted down the middle of his face. He didn’t move except like the character in the videos. Nobody else moved around. They stood still and played in one spot for two hours. Amazing.
I saw Tool perform 6 times from 1996-1998 traveling between Detroit & Columbus. What surprised me was 50% of the shirts at the Rage Against the Machine show were Tool shirts.
There are some very old footage of their early shows that proves how into the music he gets. He seems completely mental during the songs and as soon as it stops he like straightens up and is suddenly normal. Reaching for his drink etc. it’s so mesmerizing how involved he gets in the music and his performance
Imagine being in high-school and going to a concert at the small local college amphitheater. On the way in you meet a college dude selling L S D and try it for the first time. The set list included a mix of Opiate and Aenema songs, Sweet Eulogy, Forty Six & 2, Sober, Aenema... man, what an experience. The venue with a capacity of only 5,000 seemed to only be 1/3 full because EVERYONE was front and center. The open air amphitheater had super lax security and eveyone was stage diving off the main stage during the performance. I remember it looking like people were floating uphill toward me as I stood in the back of the crowd raised above most of the crowd due to it being an amphitheater. It was wild.
Yes, Tool's singer Maynard James Keenan is always playing a character onstage - but he isn't a typical lead singer... I was privileged enough to see Tool live in '93? '94? it was Lalapoolooza, in CA. It was during the Undertow (the album after Opiate) tour. I was blown away, the fact that he can sing that good, while bent over at the waist and stomping around in a circle with one foot...MIND BLOWING band live!! Please watch the Danny Carey (drummer of Tool) drum cam coverage of 'Pneuma' Live. The whole band preforms on a different level then most others.
It was '93. I saw the Irwindale festival. Pretty special, considering Rage Against the Machine, Tool, and Fishbone in order, & then I took a breather when acts like Front 242 & Arrested Development played, then they finished with Alice in Chains & Primus. What a lineup. There was more on the 2nd stage that I didn't see, but I had just gotten into tool the year before & wasn't going to miss them or Fishbone.
They drive such a heard rhythm under this song. Strong forward momentum to the energy. Great sound for Halloween. Pull up the lyrics - he's really connecting to them.
Maynard Keenan is also the lead singer and lyricist of A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer. Puscifer is my all time favorite. I’ve never seen a deeper widow’s peak hairline than Maynard’s. SUPER talented dude.
Long time Tool fan. Maynard and Tool work in genius musicianship level. Maynard in character and sings near the drumkit usually and not typically upfront. I think this performance may be at Lallapalooza. When I saw Tool in 2002, Maynard was wearing a black bikini. Lol, true story. Also amazing frontman for A Perfect Circle. Amazing concerts as well.
Maynard is not a lead singer he is a performance artist that is singing, thisis really one of the few times you can actually see him, he usually is by the drummer in a limited spotlight, TOOL's members are masters of their instruments much like RUSH, Justin Chancellor of bass, Adam Jones on guitar and Danny Carey on drums (considered the new greatest rock drummer since Neal Peart's death of RUSH) Danny has incredible technical ability, use's odd time signatures, polyrhythms, and polymeters. He can play a different rthym with each leg and arm at the same time

Maynard James Keenan is an actor at heart. It's all about getting into character and he's the master at it!
The way he's acting is the performance! It's all deliberate and meant to go with the song!
Not really deliberate. He has stage freight and how he learned to deal with is by acting. He becomes characters which helps him deal with his fear.

Great comment!
I think it was Adam Jones' friend who only gains creative freedom when under the influence
