  • Some people ask John Butler "Are you saved?" In this video on his home turf in Bakewell, he replies by asking "What is salvation? And what do we need saving from?" Directly from personal experience, he relates an encounter with Jesus (?) in the Mojave Desert where, it turns out, when working at Roy's Cafe on Route 66, he may also have cooked breakfast for Bob Dylan.

And I apologize for that. I woke up this morning and saw where you had applied to one of my comments, and it just hit me- I asked myself why? This just struck me. I attend anger management and im a 39 yeat old dad who works 7 days a week running a decent sized company. My anger has ruined my life....It breaks my heart and tortures my soul- my wife is now leaving and my 9 year old daughter is going with her. I have tried and tried to not show negative emotions, it is never directed towards them but just the experience of being around a person with lack of control over emotions is too much. Anger will and can destroy your life...not quickly, not noticeably until damage is done and your loved ones become distant strangers who only look upon you as a burden..Please, take my advice- practice controlling how you process anger and anxiety. Its important!

      Casual Acquaintance I truly feel deep sorrow for you. The past 3/4 months I have had a strong hatred for myself, to the point where I have not wanted to cope, I served half a year in the Royal Marines and unfortunately was very close to snapping my femur, and the results were fairly severe and depending on my results in the upcoming months I could potentially be in a wheelchair nearing the age of 30,(this could be due to an illness effecting first my prime bones) and so forth I was medically discharged, so since then my level of emotional control has been devastating, and I went from being one emotionless nod. Though since then I’ve gained a little control again, I’m still in a shit unemployed state but I think about how much worse some others have it, and honestly I just can’t help but feel sorry for you, and I wish I had the kind of power to help someone like you because you truly do seem like you deserve the best. John I am in tears, you have helped me through my current situation. I see it now, after putting my thoughts in a cloud of forgetting and entering a cloud of unknowing I understand why I am so stressed, it's quite funny actually, I have been listening to my thoughts too much! Our thoughts focus on past and future, which creates worry, these thoughts are the extent of our own experience and knowledge which is truly ignorance. When we submerge our thoughts under a cloud of forgetting , and we listen to the silence within that is where you find Peace. Be Here and Now! God Bless John, you are a true servant of God.

    It was very brave of you both to address this topic at all. Thanks for your efforts and honesty in trying to convey your ideas. My personal belief is that Jesus is the word of God, and is the word of God made flesh. He reveals God and is God in human form. So whilst I am e joying being helped very much by John's teaching and leading with regards to finding stillness, I remain frustrated. The reason being I feel is that 'we should pray in the spirit but also with our understanding' we need both spirit and understanding , ie scripture,is, the revelation both of Christ and his teaching and the experience of the spirit as comforter.I have a long way to go,and am forever slipping back, but you have brought a wonderfully refreshing approach John to my experience of prayer. Thankyou and keep up the good work, you're doing great.God bless you😘

    He was honest here. One must respect that. It's sad that he said he can't see God as a loving Father and doesn't feel comfortable seeing Christ in people. God is indeed a loving Father and Christ equally so. It is infinitely better to worship the Creator than the created.

    This is the most beautiful and direct explanation of the Christ/God saving experience, the continuous presence and availability of stillness. Letting go and entering into rest is salvation, and by what you say, we are saved from our torments in the stillness as often as we enter it. I myself have had very negative experiences with some forms of Christianity, and have had beautiful experiences with and in the stillness. I think of God as the power of creation, and the Son as the stillness, observing it as it comes to pass.

    Mr. John, I must say that the question you had today about wether Jesus is your savior, is one I’ve had for you as well. I had this question only because I’m reuniting with my walk with the Lord Jesus Christ. As I crave the word and more knowledge and deeper prayer I stumbled upon your videos because I also watch ASMR and I was looking for one geared toward my faith, but it’s hard to discern wether I am in the right spiritual fellowship for my spiritual walk with Christ. I simply never asked because I was afraid of being rude or nosey since our walk with God is very personal. I’ve learned so much by watching and listening to your videos and I will keep watching since I feel like I’ve heard what I need to hear. I appreciate you greatly and I thank the Lord for your journey because it bears fruit, it is here. Like the song says, your labor is not in vain. Again Thank you.

    People seem to be confused by John's sentiments on whether he has been saved by Jesus. I completely understand him. How can I be saved if I continue to struggle? How can I have been saved when I continue to sin? I won't be saved until my life in this body is done because it's just not possible. However, I do feel that presence of help and comfort that continues to help me. I'm not even comfortable saying its jesus that's with me but theres definitely something there.

      Sanctification is a process, so we are not perfect but are aiming that way. That being said we can experience The Kingdom of God on earth (as it is in Heaven) by doing his will from the foundation of your relationship with Jesus and the Father (which is more important than anything becuase we get our identity as a son or daughter of God from this).

    • @trahnettilhcs
      @trahnettilhcs 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      This doesn't make any sense in the context of what the bible says, though. John and others on this thread are using scripture and Jesus as a foundation for this discussion, but picking and choosing what parts of those scriptures they want to be true and which they have decided in their own minds are untrue. I understand the idea that "if I continue to sin, I must not be truly saved" is prevalent, but this is a very infantile and facile conclusion in the light of what scripture actually says about the matter. First and foremost, Jesus tells us multiple times that salvation is here and now (Mark 16: 15 - 16, Matthew 10:32, Luke 19: 5 - 10), even denoting immediate salvation upon a man dying next to him on a cross (Luke 23: 39 - 43). The scriptures tell us that, if we believe that Jesus is who he says he is, that his death is sufficient propitiation for the entirety of our sin now and forever, then we are saved. Sanctification, the process of becoming more like Jesus in life, is not the same as justification/salvation. Even though we struggle with sin, that does not revoke our salvation. It just means we are in the process of moving towards the life Jesus has in mind for us, becoming more like him. Paul specifically talks about this EXACT thing in Romans 7, where he says this:
      "So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? THANKS BE TO GOD, WHO DELIVERS ME THROUGH JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD!"

    • @Neceyjenae
      @Neceyjenae ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You make no sense, we will all continue to fall short of Gods glory, that's why Jesus died on the cross, so we don't have to be perfect, that's how he saved us!

    John, nature cannot save you from your misdeeds, so I don't know why you find comfort in that over someone who literally died and dealt with sin...
    As much as I love this guys voice, it feels like he has spent far too much time with only his own thoughts, rather than also informing his own experiences with scripture. Self reflection is good, don't get me wrong, but it gets to the point where he speaks a lot, but says nothing at all.
    Either way, I wish all the best for John, and I hope he can discover that faith in Jesus' salvation is simple, comforting and far more powerful than mere quietness could ever be.

      1 Corinthians 1:18-31
      18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
      19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.
      20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?
      21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.
      22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:
      23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;
      24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.
      25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
      26 For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:
      27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;
      28 And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:
      29 That no flesh should glory in his presence.
      30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:
      31 That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

      I agree with John in that all we can really know is the sensation of direct experience. In other words: our own minds (cogito ergo sum?). Through practice one can experience it for themselves without needing to take the word of some dodgy authority figure. The bible is a collection of bronze and iron age stories without any outside, corroborating reference. The only argument for its truth and authority its proponents ever seem to point is the bible itself. It's like taking a suspected criminal's denial as evidence that he didn't do it--as if someone can be their own alibi. What if you were born in Iran or India? You'd probably be Muslim or Hindu. Being born in a predominantly Christian country is an accident of geography, but what's common to all is the sensation of direct experience. It's the ability to find calm waters in the midst of the hurricane that rages around us; the stillness amidst the chaos of modern life.
      I'm not trying to convince anyone of anything, but if someone coming from a neutral position (i.e., not raised in a tradition and, therefore, not told what to believe from a young age) was asked to choose a religion, I don't think the choice would be obvious. Many religions have saviour figures, eschatological predictions, and assert that to choose incorrectly is to face an eternity of suffering. What John is suggesting sidesteps that and doesn't rely on taking the word of scripture, but rather suggests a practice that anyone can test. That's not to say that one can't do that _and_ believe in a personified saviour figure, but I think that's beyond the purview of these videos.

    • @My2Cents1

      John seems to be a person who never needed the company or validation from others, which is what most people seek when they congregate in religious practice. It’s a chance both to show off and use peer pressure to become stronger in faith and as a group. It’s the most basic of instincts in a social animal such as the human being, and most people never evolve past it.
      Sorry to slap you on the wrist, but I think seeking solitude and raising you spiritual awareness on your own terms as John has is far more noble and enlightened than attending sermons and reciting scripture.

      I think you are misunderstanding this. His first response worried me as well. But he is not dismissing that jesus came to earth and died so that we may be saved. Hes simply saying that he could easily still forfeit on his salvation if he were to turn his back on god salvation. Now personally as far as I know of (which is admittedly little) no verses that say that we must acknowledge jesuses coming and saving automatically mean were saved in fact that seems rather silly. However I think some misconstrue this bc of several different scriptures the one I thought of that had initially made me worried was 1st John Chapter 4 verses 1-3

      1: Beloved ones do not believe every inspired statement, but test the inspired statements to see whether they originate with God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.
      2:This is how you know that inspired statement is from God: Every inspired statement that acknowledges Jesus Christ as having come in the flesh originates with God.
      3: But every inspired statement that does not acknowledge Jesus does not originate with God. Furthermore, this is the antichrist inspired statement that you have heard was coming, and now it is already in the world.

      Now I decide to look this up specifically bc he refused to acknowledge that he was saved and for some reason I had remembered the verse 2 as saying " every inspired statement that acknowledges Jesus Christ as having come and saved us." But I was simply incorrect. Perhaps their is somewhere in the bible where it does say something more in line with this that I'm not aware of as I certainly dont have it all memorized. However I would just like to share a little life experience if I may.

    Thank you so much, Mr. Butler! Fascinating perspective you have the meditative sense. Maybe the question that should have been asked at the beginning is, "Have you accepted Christ?" I think of the verse that says, "for you are saved by grace, not by the works of man." I do agree that it takes a lifetime to get into the uncorruptible, but I think that personally because of someone accepting Christ, their saved by the divine "grace" of God.

    FIrstly, thank you for sharing these videos. They mean more to me than I can express. I watch/listen to them daily.
    I have a couple questions for you. I consider myself a deist, at least at this point in my life at 51 yrs old. I believe nature shows us PROOF of God or a creator. And our very consciousness (the ability to sit here and ponder these questions) is again, PROOF. I don't feel the need for "Faith". Nature is the language (or "word" if you prefer) of God. The Bible was written by humans. Yet, I feel there are many lessons to learn from the Bible. So now my questions:
    #1 (and someone else asked this as well): Do you believe the Bible to be the actual word of God, or man's attempt to surmise what God would teach us?
    #2: You mentioned in a previous video something about "Evil" as being within ourselves and only existing if we acknowledge it. Then, wouldn't "Goodness" or "God" also be within us and not "out there" somewhere influencing us from afar? Aren't both simply choices we make?

    In training the mind thro yoga I read recently John that in the infinite unmanifest there is nothing to worship so stepping it down a level there s jesus.
    Makes sense to me. I had that problem after my experience with calm infinity.
    It was frustrating. Its taken me 16 yrs to put that in perspective. Like you and many others I thought nature was IT and systems his glorious work so to have something more glorious , like another unsuspected dimension in my 60 s set me in spin. Recently I notice the silence showing up more often. Its teaching me in itself and on line theres validation.
    I felt a woman who had died stand beside me as I hung curtains I sewed and she liked sewing. She showed me a brightly lit room which would later become a cancer op of a mild nature but in which time I filled with that light. One thing I felt after rebounding was disapptmt that it (the wars, cruelty and bloodshed) was all for this! I heard of one other person, a monk maybe, who also felt disappted. Mostly I just like the silence prospect. I met two mature men who I felt asked in the silence that I come live with them. The old saying Go into the silence and ask for what u want.
    But it evaporated. So very nice to hear your experiences. Your not alone on this level, maybe once your one, held in love.

    I felt I saw John Butler more clearly in this conversation than any before it, and I would speak out to this great soul, if I could, a word of caution.
    I think I, like so many others, see in John Butler a very deep soul, but sadly, I also see a lost soul. Yes, even a very great soul may be lost.
    And why lost? Because though he may experience stillness, even peace, it is not the great peace of knowing Jesus Christ, which, he has dsmisses as indefinable and unknowable, very much contrary to our God given ability to know God, and to be known.
    Even John Butler should realize that the silence behind--his pauses and mystifying ”pops” that so entrance--reach their culmination in the formulation at last of words, and not one soul would tune in to listen to John Butler say nothing.
    More so, all that John Butler has to say is of himself, or he retreat from self, but yet so little is said of Christ--except to purport tharhe us best known to him in the rocks and skies and hills--and yet scripture tells us that if we do not cry out in praise, the rocks will!
    John Butler has been quiet long enough. Now he must confess, as every tongue shall, that Jesus Christ is Lord, or else even his great soul must someday leave the light that he so enjoys and wander alone, in darkness, apart from all the Word made Flesh has created and known.

    Butler's way of answering the first question is very clear. He wouldn't say that he is saved but that he is a sinner. This is because he doesn't not look on Christ first but on himself. In the Bible is taught that one can be saved, be in the process of being saved and still to be saved. If one looks at Christ you can know that you are saved. All the sins that you have committed are dealt with on the cross and now have a new sinless life in him. But if you look at you you will surely must see sin. Which is also true. But you can say that you are saved in Christ and in another way ate still a sinner. You are sinless in Christ apart from yourself, because every sin and sinful self has been done away with on the Cross at once for all eternity! This is the good news. On the other hand, this wil manifest in the soul and body progressively, but the eternal reality or fact is that in Him you are already fully saved!

    Some theological questions "immediately precipitate us into a seething caldron of debate." The question, "Are you saved?" has got to be at the top of the list. God decides who gets to know him. We can make a decision to seek God, but we can't decide to make God reveal himself to us. He decides when, where and how that will happen. How pompous does that sound coming from me? Who am I to make such a declaration? I've had the privilege of receiving a profound revelation, but I can't share it because I don't know how. Words fall pitifully short. It was personal, intended for me, and I thank God for it. But it's like a curse because it can't or won't be received by others. Try to share it with others and it will get you crucified. So I just keep quiet about it and try to help someone if I can. Maybe God will send someone to me who will hear the fantastic message that was given to me. This has been my experience.

    One of the key points John often returns to is the inadequacy of language to represent reality. I agree. And I have been obsessed with this idea for years. With John having studied Russian at University, would it be possible to ask him what he thinks of Noam Chomsky's suggestion that we are hardwired to aquire language & if this might be some kind of spiritual test given to us by whatever supernatural force there is? Perhaps all the mindclutter we develop (because of language) is designed to obscure the stillness we live with?

    Mr. John Butler. Thank you. Do you remember the story in Acts, where Paul and Silas were beaten for preaching the gospel? They praised God in the prison with stripes on their back, and at midnight, a great earthquake struck! All the prison doors were opened, but apparently, no one left for their amazement of the preceding events. Do you remember that the Phillipian jailer came and was about to kill himself with his sword, when Paul said, "Do yourself no harm, because we are all here!" Do you remember what the jailer said? He said, "What must I do to BE SAVED?" Upon which Paul said, " "Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you shall BE SAVED." It is present tense. We are all sinners, but SALVATION depends on our FAITH IN THE LORD JESUS, not our feeble attempts of imperfect righteousness. We must repent, yes, but we can never measure up to God's righteousness. Jesus became a sin sacrifice for us, so we can be given His imputed righteousness. This is the message of Roman's chapters 3-5.

      @@SpiritualUnfoldment In other words, when Paul said "You will BE saved," it's like saying, Jesus already died and rose again. YOU have to accept what He did for YOU, because God accepted it. Now he wants you to enter in to a state of forgiveness by God. And even though you're not yet in heaven, God's promises are sure, that if you accept what Jesus did you will BE SAVED, Delivered from wrath, and redeemed. Of course Z we repent, but He is the One that saves us by his sacrifice for us.
