    Fabrication, my favourite task, cut it all out, do it right, do it once.

    PUR foam is also "ideal" for recontruction the sills of a Mini...
    I was very grateful to the former owners when I got my 1981 Mini Special and found out...

    Oh dear, Darlington could be getting some orders coming very soon. That crunching of the oversills made me wince a bit lol. Went to the NY 500 show today, some really nice cars the, especially a black Clubman estate with modern Mini seats, front and back installed.

    Always looks bad as you remove the crud, but once you get going and start renewing bits it soon comes together. Really enjoying the videos, can you do some features on setting timing and tuning mods for people who are not so much into doing bodywork.

    • @SimpsonsClassics
      @SimpsonsClassics  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah once we get cracking this one will be done and solid again soon I am sure.
      Yes of course trust me we want to get the bodywork jobs done so we can enjoy building them up. So stay tuned I am sure me and Matt can cover so bits like that. Thanks for watching 👍

    The piles of rust are always amusing to me. I think I had one about that size from my rear subframe when I disassembled it last week.

      @@SimpsonsClassics pretty much any classic as you're finding out with the Amazon and T2... but Minis seem particularly adept at producing it.

    Great progress . Your not afraid to get in there and cut out the rot .. Will be doing the same work on my 78 mini ive had for 35 years .. looking at spot welders .. what one u using? Guess a 1mm +1mm would not be powerful enough for sill lip areas ? Need a 2 +2 ?? Thanks for giving me a great guide to approaching the job .. front end first soon ...
    Regards
    Ian

    • @SimpsonsClassics
      @SimpsonsClassics  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey thank Ian for watching. 2+2 would be better spot welder wise. I don’t use mine off as it’s a little temperamental. It’s a old SIP welder it’s got some age to it for sure. But does make life easier when doing new panels etc

    I had over sills on my traveller. Unfortunately they were brazed on and the floor edge had been damaged. Wasn't really a problem as the car was a restoration and i stripped it down to bare shell anyway.

    • @SimpsonsClassics
      @SimpsonsClassics  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh that sounds like an interesting repair. But yeah it all gets chopped out and we can start again.

    Interesting, at what point do you stop and source a different shell thats in better nick? The cost for new panels vs a different car as a base with less restoration hours in a shop (for someone not doing the work themselves). Hard to know as each shell has its own issues/character

    • @SimpsonsClassics
      @SimpsonsClassics  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A brand new shell is over 10k for this car it will never be getting that. In the mini restoration world these are common repairs but could have been avoided if they hadn’t been bodged. I agree a bodyshops labour would be massive for work like this but still less than a new shell. Also there is the fact of the sentimental attachment to cars, most people like to retain as much of the original car as possible. Thanks for watching Hadyn. 👍

    @vwcoco ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Crazy what’s hidden rust there is but with new panels it will last especially with our products today protecting everything 👍

    • @SimpsonsClassics
      @SimpsonsClassics  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know buddy it’s madness isn’t it. But if the mot repairs weren’t done we wouldn’t have half as many classics on the road as we do now.

    Hi , do you have any advice on what to look for when purchasing a mini to restore. ive managed to persuade a friend of a friend to let one of his collection go and was just looking for any tips on what the main things you would look for damage wise . Cheers

    What year is this car with the oversill issues? My '88 is a full restoration (unsure when done) and it has oversills. I've been undercoating with Fluid Film and avoid winter driving. Any tips on making vents/drain holes to improve things as they are?

    • @SimpsonsClassics
      @SimpsonsClassics  ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a 1995 mini. I have seen people just cut the raised part of the over sills to let them vent as a temporary measure hopefully this helps you.

  • @philtucker1224
    @philtucker1224 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Marc obviously it depends on what your landlord says but I still like the idea of fitting a couple of pulleys to that main beam in the roof, you could use it to tilt minis up to say, 45 degrees to weld on new sills etc, without using the rotisserie? (Just thinking..)

    • @SimpsonsClassics
      @SimpsonsClassics  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea that would be great but it’s not something I can do due to the landlord etc but it would be nice. 👍

  • @grahamwoodier5066

    Oversills probably seemed like a good idea at the time as a cheap mean to an end. Is the other side as bad?

    • @SimpsonsClassics
      @SimpsonsClassics  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep it’s one of those if they didn’t get done back in the day for mots we wouldn’t have as many minis as we still do. So it’s saved them in some weird way. Yes the other side is just as bad unfortunately.

    No matter what you unveil when you remove rusty panels you never seem to be fazed by what you find. Is there any job you’ve worked on where you feel it’s more than you can handle. I personally haven’t seen you panic in any videos but I wonder what new
    “can of worms” will present themselves on the Mini resto.

    • @SimpsonsClassics
