      @alaskasmallcraftadventures  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@robbiek1999 the water conditions dictate the challenge level. Chest waders are a must as the water is usually chest deep and slow moving when its possible to cross. other times its not safe at all to try crossing and you could get swept down stream. Always BOLO for trees, branches, wood and other debris being swept down river.

      There were a couple of real line screamers in there that we never got to the bank too so I know we left you a few! And yes, solid observation on walking over there. We went last night and the water is up about 7in higher than 3 nights ago! Vinny's waders were filled to the top on our attempt over and we turned back around halfway because of how swift the current was! There's no way to walk it right now! Sooo many Pinks in there to battle through..

    I love how informative your videos are. I will watch others trying to get an idea of where to go, what to use, how to use it and everything because I'm a beginner. MOST videos are just people showing off and not giving any info on their set up. I love that you showed what didn't work, and what worked and then what your buddy was using that was working for him. AND, I actually know that spot because we scouted it out last week when we were trying to figure out where to fish here. Wish it was safer for my kiddos to come along. Is that current difficult to cross to the island? Rivers make me nervous lol. Anyway. Thanks for being informative and sharing the love. I've recently subscribed and am always happy to see whether or not my ideas on where to fish and what to use actually work lol

    This is so AWESOME! I will be visiting Soldotna in July and after watching this I am even more excited! CAn I ask what weight your rod is and what leader you are using? I have a 5wt. Will that be enough for those big guys? I will also be bringing some spinning gear along with me. Will Trout magnets be good for this area or is there a better alternative to artificial? I would greatly appreciate and advice! New sub for you as well.

    • @alaskasmallcraftadventures
      @alaskasmallcraftadventures  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sweet! You’ll love the Kenai in July if you’re into Sockeye salmon fishing. The silver salmon runs are typically an August-September thing. Peak Sockeye salmon fishing is in July and is the absolute busiest time of year around here. Nothing but great energy and good vibes goin on! I fish a 9wt Uglystik bigwater fly rod and use 20lb monofilament for my main line and a 17lb monofilament leader line, about 5 ft in length. A foul hooked 7lb salmon could easily break a 5wt so proceed with caution! After July we use salmon roe, spinners, spoons and lots of flies like the egg sucking leach or flesh fly. Steelhead/rainbow trout are huge and chase the salmon run so be ready to catch a few of those guys. Good luck, I’m excited for your visit!

      @alaskasmallcraftadventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Welcome aboard! I think by that time of year you should be thinking of frosty mornings and less daylight. There will more than likely be very few salmon around but still fishable. The rest area at Tern lake (Seward Hyw and Sterling Hyw Intersection in the mountains by Cooper Landing) should be filled with fish and is always fun to stop at and see the fish in the water by the hundreds (can't fish here BTW). If possible, focus up river. Target the big rainbows and get lucky hooking into a silver. You'll be battling through the spawned out zombie pink apocalypse floating down the river during the end of the season as well.

    • @alaskasmallcraftadventures
      @alaskasmallcraftadventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on the river. The water level fluctuates with the seasons. Sometimes there can be a lot of rain or snow melt off which can make the current too swift to wade over. A lot of the time it’s possible though with chest waders and a boat is not necessary. Of course, having boat access really opens up the fishing spots, even when the water is raging.

  • @kusinaadventures
    @kusinaadventures ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That was awesome. Great content. Thanks for the great information. Quick question, how do you guys cross that river into the middle island? Boat or foot? Looks deep in the middle and the current is strong

    • @alaskasmallcraftadventures
      @alaskasmallcraftadventures  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      During certain times of the year the water level is low enough to walk across, but taking some type of watercraft is certainly faster and safer. There's a shallower path above the boat launch rocks that makes it possible. Here's a link to a video, the last shot shows the pathway by drone th-cam.com/video/HZCpHnie2Lk/w-d-xo.html

    A sliding bobber with a adjustable bobber stop above a fixed or sliding weight to 18” of leader will keep those eggs down. Also don’t be afraid to cure your eggs to add flavor for the feeesh. But if flossing is working it’s much easier then dealing with bait

    • @alaskasmallcraftadventures
      @alaskasmallcraftadventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @alaskasmallcraftadventures
      @alaskasmallcraftadventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We’re using 3s and 4s for hook size. Sometimes even just a Russian river fly. About a 1/2 oz of weight is adequate depending on the current. Try to get your hook and weight to sink at the same rate for the most success. My next video shows my rig so be sure to watch it!

    Awesome video! I'm planning on visiting Soldotna first week of September. How's the fishing for silvers currently going? Also, does flossing work at all for silvers this time of year? In late July this year I landed few silvers while flipping for reds. I saw videos fishing silvers with bobbers and fish eggs also. Is it by word of mouth when people know when fishing is good and of course by being on the river. Any othe indicators? Thanks again!

      I’m working on a vid right now with an update of the fishing. We caught 3 silvers and 3 sockeye yesterday. 2 of them were about 10 lbs. We catch a lot of silvers flossing. If you fish early in the day the silvers feed more consistently and you can catch them with salmon roe or a lure. ADFG has bait prohibited until September to protect the kings. Everyday I go out fishing I see people still catching.

      Indeed I have plenty of fresh roe from the sockeye season. I wanted to try to get around having the pink stained fingers all month. The freeze dried roe can sit in your bag without refrigeration for the entire season and not spoil. Unlike traditionally cured roe that tends to mold after a week of trips to the river unless you're freezing it every time. I thought it would be worth the experiment if I could get a fish to take it. I did not anticipate it floating though!! I think it was worth a shot, now I know...

      Good eye! I think my bobber was taking on all too much water also. I prefer a brighter color too so its easier to see from afar.

    All of your videos and knowledge came in handy on our trip a few weeks ago. Alaska was everything I thought it would be. I want to bring my step daughters. Can I get your email?

    Why do you clowns even use fly rods? Your running all mono and flossing salmon (fly rod for show?). Just use a spinning rod to snag them.

      Are you actually interested in why we use them or are you just attempting to be relevant? Fly reels are half the weight of spinning reels and have far fewer parts to obstruct the line during repetition of flossing. Of course I’m sure you probably think you already know that.
