So many big stars got their start in this movie including: Sean Penn, Forest Whitaker, Eric Stoltz, Nicolas Cage, Anthony Edwards, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judge Reinhold, Phoebe Cates etc.. the quintessential 80’s movie about 80’s teen life.

Having grown up in San Diego during that time I'd have to say it's as much a 70's movie as it is an 80's flic. This and "Breakfast Club" are the quintessential 80's coming of age movies.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High, was one of those stereotypical teen movies of the 80's Killer soundtrack though. I think most of us guys fell in love with Phoebe Cates in this movie.

Jackson Browne doesn't write songs that make you want to dance. Most of his songs impact how you see the world around you as you live today. Listen again in ten years and it still has impact but carries the reflection of where you are in life at that time. Try his songs "For a Dancer" or "Love needs a Heart" or "Call it a Loan" you can see his emotional depth on full display.

I actually think this song is a nice-paced workout song. You can do an aerobic dance routine to it. It's probably on a Richard Simmons workout tape!

Jackson Browne's live version of "Load Out" and "Stay" is good. It's dedicated to his roadies and talks about life on the road. "Stay" is a cover but he works it into basically one song without break.

The cast of this movie was insane with so many of the actors going on to great careers, amongst them being Sean Penn, Eric Stoltz, Forrest Wittaker, Nicolas Cage,Jennifer Jason Lee and Judge Reinhold. Oh and Phoebe Cates became every teenage boys wet dream in her red bikini but I digress...

Jackson Brown is a phenomenal songwriter and as previously mentioned, his songs aren’t meant to get you out on the dance floor. I highly recommend you take a listen to his first big hit “Doctor My Eyes”. Great lyrics and a nice beat👍🏼😊.

Jackson Browne is probably my favorite musician, and it kills me that this is the song everyone reacts to... because even I, as big a fan as I am, really don't like this song. His catalog, especially from the 70's, is remarkable. This one song isn't close to being representative of the depth and beauty and emotion and poetry that characterizes nearly all of his other songs. Definitely give him another listen. I suggest starting with Late For The Sky, The Times You've Come, or Farther On.

    • @Katmandu29

    JACKSON BROWNE:
    "Running On Empty"
    "The Pretender"
    "Boulevard"
    "Rock Me On The Water"
    "These Days"
    "Lawyers In Love"
    *Edit
After needing to hear "Boulevard" after making my list this song was recommended,

This was the overarching song for the movie but the most identifiable song especially for young men has to be The Cars "Moving in Stereo" and Phoebe Cates emerging from the pool in that Red Bikini. This was an 80's raunchy teen movie that pretty much encapsulated teen life in the early 80's

If Jackson Browne ever put out a "throwaway" song, this is definitely it! He hasn't done very many radio songs but his first one might be his best, "Doctor My Eyes". His best songs are really found on his albums and there are a lot of great ones to pick from. But this one was purely a commercial venture all the way and was designed to fit into an 80's teen movie. Not his forte, at all.

I adore Jackson Browne but this is my least favorite song by him. It's unusual for Jackson to write an overtly pop tune. Most of his songs are heavy and deep. Even the lighter tunes are mostly intriguing. This song is just pure pop. I think some people like this song because they like the movie. It was a teen sensation at the time, sorta milestone in teen oriented movies.

You likely won’t like many Jackson Browne songs if you didn’t this one. None are slow paced love songs or dance songs. They are very reflective songs…like what a prolific songwriter would sing while playing his guitar in front of a group of friends in front of a fire at the beach.

If you don't already know the music of Jackson Browne, lock yourself inside for the weekend. Spend the next couple of days listening - you'll rediscover why you fell in love with song to begin with. JB's LATE FOR THE SKY (1974) album remains one of my favorites. I'm requesting the song For A Dancer.
I'll never quite be able to forgive Sean "Spicoli" Penn for saying "DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDE !!!" and convincing the world that all surfers have an IQ of seven. If, however, you want to catch Penn in an "Excellent" movie, check out STATE OF GRACE (1990) Sean Penn, Gary Oldman.

This is not a typical Jackson Browne song, being a movie song. If you to hear something much more deep -- try "Shape of a Heart", which is, more or less, about coming home and finding his first wife dead from overdosing on sleeping pills. Or "Here Come Those Tears Again", which he cowrote with Nancy Farnsworth, his mother-in-law from his first marriage. Jackson is still recording and touring, and I saw him earlier this month (4th time for me). If you want to do something recent, there's "Until Justice is Real" off his latest album.

Jackson Browne sang this just before the bikini scene with Phoebe Cates. That scene after the song is too hot 🔥 for TH-cam! 🙄
Unlike you, I liked this 👍 song 🎵 . You may need to see the movie 🎥 to get a better sense of the song.

Please react to 'For A Dancer', or 'Before The Deluge', or 'The Pretender' or 'Song For Adam', or "I thought I Was A Child', or 'My Opening Farewell', 'These Days', or maybe 'Looking into You'. They are all far superior songs by the legend that is Jackson Browne, though this is not a bad song, it does not reflect his greatness, his lyrical genius. Thanks for your great reactions.

Totally agree with your analysis. I've always found the lyrics too repetitive. However, having lived through that time, seeing the movie when it came out, knowing the characters and their stories, it all adds a special element to the song. So, I highly recommend seeing the movie. Stacy's story will touch your heart, and as her song, it has a nostalgic appeal that it otherwise lacks.

I totally understand, until I got into 80s movies more and heard certain songs I wasn't thrilled with the song. Whenever movie producers pick a song for a movie soundtrack its not always the best song that showcases that the depth and talent of the artist who made it. Jackson Brown is a very good singer songwriter and I highly suggest a reaction to his song The Pretender. One of my fave lyric songs that I think many of us can relate to and a great melodic music arrangement that vibes you back to that era as well. And an awesome song to cruise down the interstate to and reflect.

I absolutely love Jackson Browne's music, but I've always found this song to be oddly thin and kind of boring, coming from someone who can write things like The Pretender or Song for Adam. I definitely think she should give him another listen. To me, Somebody's Baby is the unfortunate anomoly in his catalog. There's so much more depth filling his other albums.

I'm somewhat of a Jackson Browne fan and I agree completely. He certainly has some mediocre songs. But he also has songs that hit it out of the park. in my opinion, I'd suggest "Hold On Hold Out", Doctor My Eyes", "The Pretender". Thanks for your reviews!

Back when guys spent a Lot of time watching and trying to get a girls attention. Not the case today. My grandparents used to own and operate a roller skating rink, the lsst, ending in 1990. Seemed like the 80s ended by the guys playing video games and gave up on roller skating and girl-chasing. Seeing this video reminded me on how society changed.

TBH, I only think you’ll like this movie is there is a nostalgic connection for you. I was a teen in the 80s so I can relate to it. Otherwise it’s really not a great movie.

Angela - It is what it is as they say. I don't care for this song either. The movie is better than the song. I rarely ever play Jackson Browne. There is a song he does with Clarence Clemons (Bruce Springsteens Sax player) called You Are A Friend Of Mine which is nice. Otherwise, I agree with you here.

Fast Times is a killer movie. Very funny. It's hard to relate to the song without the context of the movie. The video didn't do much to help. Random scenes from the movie didn't help.
