    I'm from Australia and there native here, havnt caught or seen any as I don't live in the area for them but I catch flathead gudgeons, empire gudgeons, ghost shrimp, long arm shrimp, dwarf flathead gudgeon and fire tail gudgeons there the most prominent fish I've caught

    very useful vid..have fry at the moment from one Male and 3 females..couldn't find anymore locally..hence the breeding to increase the numbers..I notice yours have much more yellow colour than ours in the UK..the males here are greenish tan..and the females are an clear olive green..
    Hopefully once we get them to a decent size then we can start selecting the next generation of parents for better colour ..
    I wouldn't mind trying to source other variants just for the contrast..I remember when I worked in the aquarium trade 15 years ago there were some really pretty white Gertrude from the czech republic..
    I haven't seen anything like them for a long time except for in books and on the internet..Anyway thanks for the vid and please keep up the good work..

    Thanks for sharing Rachel, one of my favourite little fish, they are much tougher then they look I've collected them here in Australia in North Queensland in roadside puddles with a couple of inches of water near swamps and keep them in ponds outdoors the temps in winter get down to bellow 10deg. C. they breed very prolifically in the warmer months in densely planted ponds so a good fish for a beginner and look good in nano tanks.

    Thank you so much Rachael for bumping these up the list. They are a beautiful little fish. Nice to know they are so hardy also. The only question I have is do they tend to swim in directional schools?

    • @RachelOLeary
      @RachelOLeary  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have 14 firetail gudgeons that I am going to put into a 75 gallon with some other aussie rainbows in the future - the firetails were being sold dirt cheap as feeder fish in LFS - too pretty for that and so lively..I discovered that they were sourced from a river only 5 minutes from my home (I am in Australia)...and as much as I have been tempted to return them to the river it is against the law - as they may now contain diseases not found in the river system....so will try and give them a good life...

  • @ericesper348
    @ericesper348 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah Rachel I don't know how far back you check the comments I just discovered your TH-cam channel last week and I've been binge-watching it ever since I started to put in a small fish room about a year ago I don't have the space available that some do but I do what I can with what I've got and independently have come to some of the same decisions that apparently you and others have Mattin filters and sponge filters for example and Nano species. Anyway I have two questions that I hope you'll see and maybe have an answer for where can I find endlers and class with documentation? And the other question is where's the best place to acquire the various blue-eyed rainbows with accurate species name. I currently have some male endlers I got from a mail-order house and some blue eyes that I think are no more common fork-tailed variety but I'm hungry for more thanks for the information and entertainment

    • @RachelOLeary
      @RachelOLeary  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't ordered from them, but for Class N endlers (I have some here, but not hte paperwork) you can go to swampriveraquatics for a database of sellers. As far as blue eyes- there a few of us that sell them, but rarely do we have exact collection point data, however the species ID are generally pretty good.

    • @ericesper348
      @ericesper348 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the prompt reply very much. I will check into those I may seem overly concerned about the whole species thing but I ordered eat fish that were listed as assorted pseudomugli at a fairly high price from one of the larger mail order places.. 6 survived and it appears they are truly assorted. I believe I have four 3 male 1 female furcatus. And a pair of some form of gertrudae sp?. I'm hesitant to breed them cuz I don't want to thanks again ever so much!
