I was scared because I just broke my thumb from a pitch and was looking for a way to help that fear

turn into the pitch, also try to study recognizing pitches. You’ll gain confidence and feel more comfortable taking fast scary pitches :)

The idea that it hurts more when you’re younger makes a lot of sense. My most painful experience happened when I was 10-years-old. The pitch was running in on me and I moved my back foot out without getting the rest of my body out of the way. I ended up taking it square in my back. I dropped to the ground in tears. The funny thing was I stayed in the game and ended up pitching the final inning or two. When the pitcher who hit me came up to bat I really wanted to strike him out. I threw the first pitch to him as hard as I could. It was high...high enough to bounce off his helmet. Nope, I didn’t deliberately hit him, but didn’t regret it either.

You wanted to strike out the pitcher who plunked you rather than plunking him back in retaliation. Wow. You showed more maturity at 10 years old than some of the man babies in the MLB.

72 years old now and always wondered about this. I got hit playing as a kid like most of us did. I watch how you and the other Major Leaguers shake it off and figured it must have something to do with muscle mass deflecting the pain. In the Sox Yankees game I'm watching , one of the Yankees took one off the elbow. But he had the pad there and he walked to first base like he barely felt it. So thank you, now I have a better understanding .

Dan P a similar think happened to me.
I was playing in a summer league called "Jaycee Courant", and me and the other catcher on the team would alternate who played catcher each game. when I didn't play catcher, I usually played center field, which is what I was playing this particular game.
during warm ups before the game, my coach hit a long fly ball, and I don't know if I stumbled, or wasn't paying close enough attention, or was just clumsy or what, but when I went to catch the ball, it hit directly into the end of my middle finger(on my throwing hand), jamming it, and tearing the nail almost completely off(which I ended up having to tear the rest of the way off in the dugout, which also hurt like mother fucker.)
that was indeed painful. they didn't let me play the game, as I couldn't even throw(well, I guess I could, but it was extremely painful, and I couldn't throw well anyway because my finger was sort of numb.)

For me it’s a tie between the one to the wrist bone in college, trying to bunt a fastball that ran in or the pitch that i fouled strait up into my face in high school. But I concur…at least from my limited experience it’s much more where you get hit than how fast the pitch is.

I just recently got back into playing baseball after about 4 years off (when I was in HS) and my first at-bat I got hit right in the wrist at about 75 mph. It was a nice introduction back to baseball but it also got rid of the nervousness at the plate and I was able to be more relaxed the rest of the game. The next day I had a pretty big bruise but it wasn't that bad. lol

In my experience getting hit square in the head hurts less than anything else. The helmet does a great job of blocking out every little bit of pain. But that was only 75 mph so i cant relate to a big league fastball

On hard vs. soft body parts, the most painful time I ever got HBP as a kid was when I got hit by one right on the belly. I've been hit on bony parts (ankle, forearm, and wrist), but none were even CLOSE to as bad as that was. That hurt unbelievably badly.

  • @Geotubest
    @Geotubest 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

This video made me think of an incident. I was throwing to a major league hitter during batting practice years ago and this particular hitter lined a ball back at my face. I didn't duck behind the net fast enough --I just froze because it was hit so damned hard. Miraculously, the ball barely glazed the horizontal crossbar of the "L" shape of the net and buzzed over the top of my head. I still have nightmares and flashbacks to this day, and this was decades ago.

i can totally relate to this. most times I got hit by pitches in senior league and high school(which is as far as I played) it barely hurt at all.
but the worst hit by pitch I experienced believe it or not was in little league minors.
there was a guy named Nate Sylvia, who for some reason was a year or two older than everyone else, but was still in minors(plus he was really good. I remember coaches actually complaining about it.)
he was pitching when I played them, and I still remember vividly getting hit on the outside of my left thigh.
it hurt like a motherfucker, but I tried to walk it off, and limped to first. after about a minute, I sort of realized how much pain I was in, and I imagine maybe got a little scared/panicky, and started tearing up and called time out and they sent in a pinch runner.
I was okay after a few minutes, but over the next couple of days I developed on of the biggest, nastiest looking bruises I've ever had. it was like pure black, with a little reddish spot in the middle where the baseball hit me directly.
looking back on it, it seem strange that a kid that young could cause that much damage, especially since I was always a little big and muscular for my age, not (for example) a really small, skinny kid with no muscle or fat to absorb the blow(though I guess I did have sort of skinny legs.))

The reason why the kid wasn't in the little league majors probably was because the major coaches drafted 9 and 10 year old "phenoms". Older kids slip by and end up playing at a level way under their progress and the "phenoms" get to play only two innings a week. Too many of the little league majors feel like that they are Pat Gillick or something, drafting for the future.
Sometimes it is not about the kids...

One time when I was like 9 I was throwing so fast, the other team could barely react to my fastball. So I strike out the first two kids and on the 3rd kid I threw a 4 seam up the pipe and he leaned into it. Needless to say he was on the ground for 10 minutes

Yeah it hurts, and baseballs hurt a LOT more than softballs. One baseball season, in 14 regular season games, I got HBP 13 times. See, in softball, you can just tell the umpire you're walking the batter, but in baseball you have to throw four balls - or just hit the batter. Hitting the batter saves you from throwing three extra pitches.
It got so I could tell I was gonna get hit, because I realised that the pitcher is looking at me, not the catcher's glove, just before they throw the ball. One time, just before a pitch, I said "Oh oh" - and got hit. I said to the umpire "You see? That was deliberate". The umpire didn't give a shit, and just gave me first base.

Just curious Matt..I've never actually played baseball comparatively but as a football player I have always wondered. When you connect at the plate with a solid hit, does it hurt your hands or wrists? The only reason I asked is because growing up in the south, many mailboxes fell victim to small town boredom and every once in awhile I would get the stinger. Love the videos btw. It's awesome to have a sneak peek into the life.

As a former catcher I used to experience the feeling of "the heavy ball". What I mean is, some guys, maybe not even the hardest throwers, would release the baseball somehow that when it went into my glove it seemed to hit my hand real hard, as if the ball just wanted to burrow it's way into my palm. I hated those guys! If they drilled a hitter you could see the grimace of discomfort on the hitters face. And then there were guys who threw real hard who would release the ball which tended to rise and it felt much lighter on the receiving end. It didn't seen to blister the hand nearly like the softer tossing pitchers whose fastball had the sinking action.

I got hit by several! Big part of my, “Plate approach,” because I was a decent fielder but always a garbage hitter.
The one that hurt the least was when I was ten, took one to the temple (thought it was going to hit my shoulder, or I’d have moved) and got knocked the hell out.
When they woke me up, I just got up and trotted to first! True story! I’d forgotten my helmet, though, so that was a little embarrassing.

I remember in Junior high school, some problematic jackass threw a stone at me and it hit me right in my eyelid. We played some baseball several minutes later, same jackass was pitching, and I hit a line drive with a swollen eye right back at him, and it hit him in his manhood area. Best instant karma on my top 10. Lol

Question. Why do hitters look out to the pitcher/field of play while walking back to the dugout after a strike out? Is it a sign of “I look forward to my next AB”

I got hit by an 85 mph fastball on my forearm a few years ago, and after walking to first base, all I kept saying to myself over and over again was "Man, did that hurt," and then for a second I thought there was a chance I was going to cry. Anyway, you guys who periodically get hit by fastballs thrown in the 90s are probably a lot tougher than you realize because all I know is that 85 mph fastball really hurt!

only people who play baseball understand, especially as you get older it just isnt as big of a deal. You start to learn how to take it on the meaty parts of your body. I usually let something hit my left tricep or my left hamstring area. Getting hit in the tricep kinda feels like if you got punched in the arm pretty hard, the back of your leg kinda feels worse but you can easily jog it off on your way to 1st

I dont play baseball, but I play dodge ball and I am really good. One time I was playing dodge ball, and a kid threw the ball at me, and I jumped into the air horizontally, to try and dodge the ball. I ended up dodging it, but when I landed on the ground, I landed right on my arm. I think I broke my arm, but I never went to the doctor. That day I cried for hours, and several weeks later I still felt a horrible throbbing sensation in my arm, but by now I am fine. BTW that was possibly the second time I broke my arm. I am considering playing baseball next year for my school.

Took 83 mph off the knee. Could barely walk to first and idk why I was kept in the game to run. Worst part was we only had 10 guys and I was the only catcher so I had to CATCH the next inning

It depends where it hits, in the back isn’t bad, arm sucks but it’s not terrible unless you get it in the funny bone and get the numbness, and even upper leg isn’t too bad. But I got one off the knee cap once though and omg it was horrible. The foot can also be really bad, I fouled a batting cage ball off my toe once and that really sucked too. Never had my head thrown at by a pitcher thankfully. Got hit in the head by coach teaching us pickoff throws but the helmet protected it and we all just laughed it off

When I played hockey I used to block shots and that hurt like a M-F! But that's with pads. I can't imagine how much a hard ball to the bony parts of the body would hurt! Getting hit in the face would be horrible.

Worst for me...arch of the foot. Ouch. I tried to jump out of the way cuz i aint tryna get hit in the shin or calf and it caught me right in the arch. I fell to the ground inm the rain and mud and my beautiful white jersey was no longer white. I think that hurt more but damn, i though i broke my foot.

Some pitches dont hurt as bad as others. If you're playing in an intense situation sometimes you look up to the sky and thank God you got beaned for your teammates. But in general if hurts like hell, especially fingers and elbows

Hit on my knee hurt worse than getting hit in my face (cheekbone/nose). Went to jog to 1st n knee buckled after 1st step and fell/tumbled. Coach gave wrong sign and signaled for me to steal on the very next pitch (wtf?) and knee buckled again on 1st step.. And fell again. Got lucky and catcher threw wild back to first and i crawled to the bag w/o getting tagged. Embarrassing as hell. Sat out the rest of the game icing my knee. Next day was the size of a grapefruit.
