okay fam, i stalked reddit and found the first story's poster. they gave an update in the comments - they finally told their mom thanks to some advice from some redditors that had experience dealing with this sort of stuff. the mom confronted dad, its all true, and now they are getting divorced. the dad went on to threaten mom AND op for this, so op feels comfortable that when in court they will be allowed to stay with mom full time. :)

Thank you for finding the update! I'm glad her mom knows the truth now. I would have suspected that mom knew, but some cheaters are so good at lying that they get away with it for years. Hugs for that teenage daughter who told her. That took a lot of courage!
I knew my husband of 15 years was cheating on me, but I was so sick most of the time, I didn't care. That chick was doing a job I sure didn't want.
He eventually left me and moved in with her. Thanks to his drunken threats and abuse he stupidly put in emails, he lost everything in the divorce. He thought that he could say anything and it would be inadmisible in court because it's a "no-fault" state. Nope! If the threats and abuse are criminal level, it's absolutely considered by the judge when dividing marital assets!
Ladies and Gentlemen, always save your receipts and proofs of abuse! The courts love indisputable evidence!

An ‘open relationship’ is how my grandmother found out my grandfather was cheating. One of his buddies tried to hit on her and when she called him out he said it’s fine you guys are in an open marriage she found out he had been cheating for months.
That first story is something else. Dad has no ability to control himself and then blames everyone else.

Unfortunately this is too common. It happened with me too. I think it's because we are the ones who found out, so laying blame is a way of deflecting the situation, or making us feel guilty so we don't tell.

When I was a student teacher, on my first day, we were introducing ourselves and one of the grade one students came up to me and announced very loudly: “My dad has a Thai girlfriend and my mom doesn’t know!”. I almost choked. My mentor teacher’s eyes went as big as saucers and we couldn’t look at each other or say anything. The little girl didn’t notice our faces and went skipping merrily on her way. Be careful, children tell teachers everything, especially when they’re young!

There was an update on the story about the mom cheating. She decided to talk to her dad but wanted to wait until he came home 5 days later to talk in person. While waiting for him to get back she couldn't act normal around her mom even though the mom was trying hard to play it cool. The mom broke the night before the dad returned and spouted some stuff about how hard it was to be a single mom most of the time and then admitted that she brought up Open Marriage to the dad but didn't get a definitive answer so she just went ahead and did it. The OP told the mom that she needed to come clean with the dad and that she would tell him if the mom didn't.
The dad came back the next day and the mom claimed she had an "emergency shift" because she didn't have the courage to face him yet. The daughter told her again that she would tell the dad if she didn't and the mom told her to go ahead and tell him and then let her know if it was safe for her to come home (super cowardly to toss all that onto the daughter).
The daughter found a way to bring up open marriage with the dad later and asked his thoughts on it/fished a bit for info. Ended up asking him if the mom had ever asked for an open marriage and he said she did once like 5 months prior and that he said (a definitive) no on the spot and promised her that he'd take a demotion to a local position soon for her. Then he told the daughter that he was actually going to surprise the mom with the news that he was approved to move back to a job in their city.
The daughter excused herself and then looked back at the message dates and found out that the mom actually started talking to the other guy BEFORE asking the dad for an open marriage. The daughter decided she was done being in the middle and texted the mom that it was "safe" to come back and everything was fine, then she sent the screenshots of the cheating to her dad. She said she wouldn't update again and just sounded emotionally drained.
God that poor husband and kids. They deserve so much better.

Ah yes, this reminds me when I noticed scar marks on the wrists of a college student of mine. When I asked about them, at first he ashamed but eventually broke down and told me that his divorced mother blamed him and his twin brother for "ruining her life" by being born and her getting a divorce. I was stunned. I asked if he'd been to counselors in high school (he was a freshman) and he said he and his brother had, but they just blew it off because she said she'd never said that. It took me a long time talking to him to get him to understand that he and his brother did NOT ruin their mother's life, she had ruined it by fooling around on their dad. Some people should never be parents.

My stepdad cheated on my mom. He made her feel like it was her fault, called her an old hag. Still wanted to stay together but couldn't stand kissing her and made her seem clingy. Literally he got caught cheating again last fall, so she kicked him out. Now he is living with the new side piece, because I talked to the last side piece and told her she deserved better than fighting over a married man who doesn't care about anyone but himself. My mom finally sees him for what he is and they are separated, but she is rebuilding her self esteem from the ground up

I got a story for you. My grandpa was this standup guy. He read his Bible, volunteered to help others every weekend, you name it. His wife was an angel. Literally everyone thought she was an angel and they had 5 kids together. Idr her as she died from alzheimers when I was 4-5. He died when I was 13. We had a big funeral, our massive family was devastated. He was kinda the glue. So his death was a big deal. Then my parents started going through his stuff and found an old box of letters. He owned a trucking company and was never home. The letters were from 6 different women. He had kids with 5 of them and was engaged to the 6th one when his business went under while in the hospital. He stayed with my grandma and never contacted the other women again because he couldn't work anymore. It was crazy...my grandma deserved so much better.
Just from a practical point of view, how the hell can they afford so many families? I'm sorry for your grandma.

story time: i used to manage a cafe. we had this regular guest (she was 30s F) who would come in all the time with her son (like 4M) and sometimes with her hubs (30s M). but she was there with her kid so much my FOH staff knew her by name. knew what she did for work. all the deets. so randomly, Dad started showing up with Son and with another lady (20s F). not all the time, but at least once a week. they would all eat breakfast together and then leave. my employees KNEW something wasnt right, so after about 5-6 weeks of it, the next time Mom came in they said to her "hey, its really nice that Dad brings Son in once a week for his pancakes, and your Nanny that comes with seems really nice too." --- well folks, thats all it took because apparently she had suspicions. she sat at a table and cried for probably 2 hours, so we kept her supplied with tissues, and tea while she worked it all out. turns out, the mistress worked in our shopping center which is why they were there all the time. she was also married so they would meet where her phone location would show her at work, have breakfast, and then have their hanky panky time either in their car, or inside the dentist office that she worked at since it didnt open til 12. she divorced him and moved to a different city with her parents, and we never saw him again.

I have quite the cheating story about how my dad is the product of an affair. My dad was adopted, but in 2009 the laws around closed adoptions changed and he was given the info on who put him up for adoption. Let’s call her Glinda. Glinda had been knocked up as a teen by her military boyfriend, and was forced to not marry this guy, keep the pregnancy to term, and give my dad up for adoption by her family. When he found her, she wanted nothing to do with him because the experience of giving up a son was traumatic and she was dying of radiation poisoning. My dad contacted his aunt to get the name of his father, but she didn’t relent until after my dad’s bio mom died. Let’s call the military bf George. Only two people in the country have the same first and last name as George, and only one fits the age. My dad finds his half brother to do a DNA test just to make sure. It doesn’t match. No one in the bio mom’s family has any clue who it could be if not George. Years later my dad finds his birth father through 23 and Me, a man we’ll call Luca. Turns out, Glinda was not faithful to her bf while he was serving. My dad contacts Luca, but leaves out the affair part. Luca basically says, “I am really hurt that my girlfriend never told me that.” SHE WAS PLAYING THEM BOTH.

Getting flowers can be just a normal loving gesture. My darling husband surprises me with flowers often, especially during tulip season as they are my favorites. He went to Amsterdam for work earlier this year, and I love Delft and have always wanted a Delft tulip vase so I asked him to bring me one. He surprised me by also buying a tiny Delft bud vase and a hand carved wooden tulip so I’d always have a tulip from him ❤️❤️❤️. We’ve been together for 29 years and have been married for 23. He’s always been so thoughtful and caring. I trust him completely.

My dad blamed my sister her his cheating when she was late teens ( I was early teens ) because she was in an abusive relationship and it was "stressful" for him and my mom. Meanwhile my mom is the one chasing this POS out of the house while my dad is out galivanting. So much for manning up and protecting his daughter.

Having a "government job" is actually the best vocation to tell people you have to have a 2nd family, same as a pilot. MANY of those jobs, like active service members, are constantly out of town. My current husband was in the British Army, and while still active, stationed in the stans - but they get 3 weeks off every 9weeks - tell me that's not a perfect excuse to have 4 families - you see each one every 3 weeks 😅😂🎉

I feel so bad for the daughter who caught her mom. There’s no way it’s an open relationship. The poor girl doesn’t want to break her parents up and her life be turned upside down but she also loves her dad so much. What a burden for her!
I remember there was an update. Mom ran away as the coward she is, before any confrontation could happen. She asked op to tell her if it's safe to come back, op told the dad about the affair. Then he said the mom can come home, if I remember correctly

My step grandfather cheated on my grandmother with her best friend. When she found out, she waited for him to get home, confronted him and he tried to get aggressive, got in her face, trying to scare her. My grandmother was over 6 feet tall, raised in the country on a farm, and worked as a room attendant (maid back then) at a high end hotel (she later became the boss, but that’s another story). I say all that to say she was in peak physical condition and really strong. She promptly broke her black lacquer ice bucket over his head. He tried to run, she went after him, threw several of the matching black lacquer tumblers at him. He made it to the door, she opened it and literally kicked him out, foot in his back. He hit the sidewalk and she kicked/rolled him the rest of the way across the lawn, ran back in, got his clothes that she’d packed in trash bags and dumped them on him. And told him ‘Go stay with your . This was in the early 80s, yes I witnessed this. I was about 5 or 6.
He spent the rest of his life apologizing. He died 3 years ago. She never forgave him, but was cordial…sometimes. She would often call him to do things or fix things and he’d show up..fix it and she’d tell him to get the hell out. She is still with us but definitely colored how I handled my relationships. I married a cheater, sent him packing. No confrontation because we had one while we were dating. I broke up with him and he too tried to get in my face, taking my car keys and tried to grab me, I gave him a black eye and busted lip before police showed to break it up, and made me leave. So years later when we divorced he knew to leave me alone. He still pushed a little when I refused a hug, but got the hint real quick.
Women in my family are taught. Take no BS. We are peaceful unless you try to put hands on us…all bets off. My mother sadly did not learn this. With a man who beat her. She is no longer with us. Hence my grandmother making a point to tell me from a young age. He doesn’t treat you right, leave. If he hits you, put him down. Don’t unalive him, but make it clear he is not to touch you.
I want your grandmother. Give her to me. If I had a role model like her growing up things would have been different. No one taught me to fight or how to defend myself.

Yes she has kept them all these years to remind her and us: ‘Sometimes you gotta destroy things you love to find love for yourself.” Also they are really cool. Black tumblers, covered in spikes.
I caught my mom cheating on my dad when I was 11. I was going through my mom’s work bag for some reason and I found a love letter that this guy she worked with had written to her. I knew who he was because he had just helped my family move into our new house, and he brought his wife and two year old son with. Disgusting. I showed my dad the note right away and since my mom wasn’t home that night (probably with other dude or something), my dad had a HUGE bonfire in the backyard and burned all of her work stuff. It was therapeutic. They went to marriage counseling and tried to make it work for a couple more years, but they should have just gotten divorced then. Sometimes trying to make it work “for the kids” isn’t the right choice. They ended up getting divorced right as I was about to graduate high school and then my mom married some douche she had met online like 3 months later. She hasn’t spoken to me since I was 22 (I’m 34 now). I love my dad so so so much though.

I recently learn my Mom is cheating on my dad because of various details I noticed but today I got the confirmation when I heard her talk on phone with the guy and he said I love u, so yeah that confirms my suspisions.
That's so messed up like my dad is a great man and even though he isn't my real father he has been the best dad I could have and the best partner my mom has had beacuse she went thrugh domestic abuse and indelities on her so I did see her cry and this makes me feel digusted because I know very well know that my mom is a hypocrite.
My dad was a serial cheater in his youth, and what's horrible is that my older brothers have rewritten their memories from their childhood and now think that my mom was the one cheating. It's ridiculous. The only reason she stayed with my dad was to not ruin their childhoods, which in the long term I think was a mistake on her part, but what you going to do.....
Or maybe you dont know the full story probably both were cheating on each other. Either dad or mom was revenge cheating and yoh were just brainwashed cause you were young or its willingful ignorance happened to my cousin he grew with a wrong narrative in his mind
@@TPL0212 Trust me, my mom was not cheating. That's not me being ignorant. She is EXTREME when it comes to sex and what is the 'right' thing to do. She was the virgin until marriage kind, and thinks that remarrying is practically a sin. I'm 35 and if she ever caught wind that I was not a virgin despite being unmarried it would become a fiasco that I have no will to face.
Yep, I have an ex whose mother was like that. Catholic, virgin when she married, and he had a lot of hangups about sex, anf just a lot of guilt. Well, turned out his father is not his father. Part of the reason she laid such a massive guilt trip on him was clearly because she felt guilty about his conception. He had much lighter colouring than his brothers, and turns out to look like the bio dad.
My dad had female co-workers. Whenever he felt like one of them was getting too close he would have my mom come down to the office and they would go to dinner, or to his boss's(female) house if he had to be there for a co-worker get together. He would also have her load up all of us children (10+) in the 15-passenger van and come to his office once in a while just so all the ladies could see his family. It really helped. He told my husband when I got married that the best fly repellent was to talk about all of his children to any woman who was getting too close. We are currently pregnant with our ninth, and I say it works pretty well.😊

My father's mom died when he was seven. A few days after the funeral my grandfather brought home a woman and three kids. It was his secret second family. I don't think my father ever got over it.
i still remember the day my step mom (who took part in raising my sister and i) came into the part of the house where my sister and i were watching tv to go to my dads computer room (attached to the living room) holding her flip phone in the air saying “oh mY G O D” bc he had texted her something that he meant for his side chick. she was rightfully pissed and within the week after we were sat down with the ‘so your father and i are separating because of his actions, but i will still be a part of your life’.
he had been cheating with i think multiple women for at least a full year at that point. he was a shitty father that skipped state when i turned 10 but tricia (the step mom) continued to be part of our lives into our teens, and still checks in from time to time now that we’re full grown adults
One night my friend came pounding on my door in tears. She was supposed to be at a sleepover but it got cancelled and when she got home, her mom's boss's car was in the driveway and all the lights were out. Turns out Mom and Boss had been having an affair while Dad dated other women. They were just waiting to tell her until she was in college. (She was). Super sweet never-been-kissed at 18 started doing drugs, sleeping with anybody and dropped college. Complete personality change. Had the same happen to a male friend, totally lost faith in the world. Going out in the world at 18 is scary enough without finding out your whole family life is a lie.
The only coward in the first story is the sister & the dad who continuously cheats on the mom. The audacity people pull out of their ass when they get caught to try and blame everything else except for themselves is mind-blowing

I don’t think it’s really fair to put the child down for not telling their mom. She’s only 15 and she’s been manipulated by her dad to feel as though it’s her fault- probably making her feel more scared to tell her mom. She may fear that her mom will be mad at her since she’s been told she’s the reason for this happening in the first place. All very hard feelings for anyone to work through and act on, especially a young girl who clearly doesn’t have the support system she needs.

I so needed a dose of Charlotte. My boyfriend left me 3 days ago. He cheated on me twice in the relationship. He cheated on me on my birthday. He doesn't know I know about the first girl. But he told me and bragged about girl number 2 and used my insecurities and everything against. Me. It was so hard. I didn't cry but I am so hurt.
Please go to therapy. Otherwise you’ll find yourself repeating the same type of romantic relationships. Just with a different man. 😔
Seeing all of these comments relating to story number 1 breaks my heart. My dad is a narcissistic abuser and manipulator who will not ever take responsibility for his actions. I truly believe in the necessity for Prison reform in the US, but I also am glad my dad’s actions finally caught up with him and he has been locked up for the past 5 years. I became a therapist in great part because of the trauma from my dad so I guess *some* good came from all of the pain.

I admire you so much for making decisions from a place of compassion, and using your experiences to help others in ways only those who have lived that kind of heartbreak could know.
I'm glad he's locked up and you are safe, but that has to be hard for you too. He's the father who was supposed to guide and protect you but he hurt you and your family in the most selfish ways possible.
I'm lucky that I had wonderful parents. However, my son didn't. My ex is such a monster that I had to take my little boy and move 1500 miles away and start a new life to keep him safe from the father who hurt us so much.
My son has had a lot of therapists over the years but I wish he'd had one with your experience who could help him work through it. He's chosen to "forget" and never talk about it and I honor that and I don't talk about what happened to him either. He was too young to remember details but he still has PTSD triggers that would seem strange to most people, but I know why he hates elevators and prefers all closets to stay open or with doors removed all together.

I had a woman I had taken an interest in years ago tell me she was in an open marriage (we hadn’t done anything at this point). So since I’m someone that’s been cheated on and my ex used that excuse, I told her that I’d ask her husband then. She was very nervous and hesitant, so that told me everything and I put the brakes on. I found out from a mutual friend I discovered we had afterwards that her husband divorced her after he caught her cheating. So much for open marriage 😂
Smart move, something similar happened to my partner (who is in an actual open relationship, with me :p). He has a friend he's been friends with for a long time and there's been some tension for a long time as well, they've never acted on it though and she's been married to one of his friends for years. Then last year she tried to convince my partner to sleep with her because 'they'd opened up their marriage'... But since he's friends with her husband as well he decided to get his side of the story. Turned out he had said that he didn't much mind her being flirty at the bar. Nothing about intimacy with other people at all... Unsurprisingly, the friendship between her and my partner has soured after this whole thing. Extra dumb because he obviously knew what to look out for... Being in an open relationship himself and all 🤦♂️

I have a friend in an open marriage that has a child. Using age appropriate language, they just explained that mummy and daddy have other "friends" and then as he got older, other "gf's and bf's" and everything went fine. Their child is 17 now and is secure in the united love of his parents of him. It's a really lovely household tbh - lots of love and affection shared. It might not be for everyone, but in their relationship it has worked well.
That's the only way to do it, making sure that there is nothing to 'catch' for the child because they know it's alright. I generally think that the more open people are about their open relationship to the rest of the world the higher the chance of success

I remember when my parents just divorced. I was 25 at the time and just found out my dad was seeing a 20 yr old. My dad was in his 40s and I was livid and disgusted, especially since this girl was younger than me. Yes, my parents were divorced so we can’t really call it cheating but I couldn’t help but feel betrayed and the thought of him dating her made me ill. I also felt like the divorce was still fresh so maybe he could’ve been cheating this whole time. I found out she was only using him for his money. I right away told him not only how mad I was he was dating a girl younger than me but she was using him as well. A week later he stopped seeing her. Parents may think it’s their life and for us to butt out but they forget it does affect us as well.

I feel the same way. Divorce is still very legal. Getting legally separated is easy to do as well. Or just leave. That's harsh, but not as mean as doing the humpty dance for months or years behind their back.

Went to a male relatives funeral when I was a teen. Whole family showed up...grieving widow and kids...PLUS yet ANOTHER grieving widow with a child....that nobody in attendance knew about. I sat there with my also teen cousins watching the chaos. Still the most memorable family funeral I ever went to...

For those who love to call out people "you're a coward for not saying anything," when I was 11, my mom's best friend saw a lady she knew at the store. With a dude that was NOT her husband. She came home, thought the right thing to do was call hubby and tell him. Well, she then listened in absolute terror as dude starting beating the shit out of his wife while still on the phone. Screaming at her about what she did, and my mom's friend suddenly "oh my god, what did I do?"
Not a fun place to be caught, and you never know what people's reactions will be.

"Update: I caught my mom cheating and she’s trying to convince me my dad knows
I thought this would be a good time to update you about how the situation progressed but it’ll be a long post. Reading through your responses, there were a lot of people recommending to tell my dad and others to keep to myself out or talk it out with mom. It took me a lot of time to think and decide that I want to somehow bring it up with my dad but that I wanted to wait to do it in person. His next home visit was in 5 days after the original incident. While waiting for that, I was really uncomfortable with my mom and was thinking twice about any move she makes. She tried to play it cool, open conversations or suggest going out but I just tried to avoid her. Even if my dad did know, I was subconsciously treating her in a cold manner. This might have contributed to what would happen next.
On the night before my father’s arrival, it seems mom broke down. She came into my room when I was about to sleep and asked if we can talk. She started to talk about generic things and how hard it was for her to be almost a single mom for the past year with two teenage boys and thanked me for helping out with that. Now I started to see her tear up while bringing up that she might not have been completely honest about the open relationship thing. Long story short, according to her, she suggested to dad a while ago to open the marriage but he didn’t give her a definite answer. Rather, that he will think about it and get back to her. She said that she asked to revisit but he keeps changing the subject. So, NO agreement from my dad, that was clearly established. Now at least I know what to expect when I approach my dad. By this time, she’s completely sobbing and trying to guilt trip me about the consequences of disclosing the whole information to him. I felt sorry for her and told her the right thing to do was to come clean with him but she said she doesn’t have the courage to do it. I said that I will do it if she doesn’t. She said she’ll think about it and we both went to bed; not that I could get any sleep that night after this.
My dad arrived the next afternoon. Earlier that morning my mom sent in the family chat that she had to take an emergency shift, won’t be back until the evening, and apologized profoundly. In the private chat, I told her what the hell she’s doing and she said she’s not ready to tell him and needs more time to find the courage. I told her that I don’t think I can hold it and act normal around him so he most likely will find out from me if she doesn’t do it tonight. She sent several crying emojis then gave me the go ahead to talk to him and told me to update her if it is safe for her to come back home after I talk to dad! I don’t know what she meant, as my dad was never the violent type.
Over dinner, my dad was visibly displeased as mom never take shifts during his arrival. When we were alone, after having a lot of small talks, he was telling me that one of his co-workers is getting married next week so he’ll try to stay around to attend that. I used this as transition and told him that I came across the term ‘open marriage’. I told him that after hearing and reading about it, I asked mom what she thinks of it and mom told me it would be ideal for her situation, then asked him what he thought about it. He was taken by surprise. He said he doesn’t believe in polygamy (another term I just learned) and that if a couple feel the need for it, they should address the issue that makes them feel that way and if this issue cannot be resolved then polygamy would not be the answer. I asked if mom asked him for an open marriage he said yes but that he refused on the spot. After that, he promised her that he’ll ask to take a local position (kind of a demotion for him) as he didn’t know this is how she felt especially since he didn’t take this job in the first place until she was okay with him travelling. He was actually just approved to move back to our city and will start the new job after the new year; he was planning to surprise my mom with the news. I asked him when was the first time they talked about this open marriage proposal and he assured that it was only ONE talk that happened around 5 months ago (this is definitely after the time my mom first met Pete). He started to pressure me about what’s going on but I was able to get out of the conversation as I needed some alone time to make up the two sides of the story. By looking at the messages dates, apparently my mom started seeing this guy (not sure if they had s*x initially or not) then asked to open the marriage to give her legitimacy to f**k him. When my dad refused, she did it anyway.
I was boiling and couldn’t think straight. I messaged her to please come home and that everything is fine, then I messaged dad screenshots of her conversation with Pete then I came here to write this update. I really don’t care about what happens next and won’t write another update. Whether they separate or not, isn’t important to me anymore as I know life won’t get back to what it was anyway. The important thing is that I made peace with me carrying this burden."

Daughter said it was safe to come home then sent the dad the screen shots of the cheating.
Cheating story: my brother was married to a woman named Jody and she helped him get a government job where she worked while helping continue his education. Within 5 months on the job she found out he was cheating because a bill came in for him, she didn't think much of it so she opened it since it came from a hospital. She found out he paid for a boob job for a woman named Char who was a coworker that worked in the same office as Jody and my brother. They divorced and he married Char 3 months later. 2 years later Char started noticing that he would disappear when he'd get a phone call. Eventually she found evidence that he was cheating on her with Wendy ANOTHER coworker in the very same office. So Char and my brother divorced and he married Wendy the following year. Now I'm just waiting to see if he's going to cheat on Wendy next...😒

It has been established throughout history that if someone cheats on their SO, they will cheat on the one they cheated with, in most cases. It has happened so often that stories have been written, along with songs, all based on true happenings for quite some time. In fact, a Country song that made the rounds back in the late '50s and early '60s, called , "Go home Cheater" has the line that I'll never forget, "If you cheat on him, you'll surely cheat on me."
I was only about 5 years old when the song came out, and I'm almost 70 years old now.

I think so many married men with children fall into this because, due to the nature of our current society and unfortunately extremely unfair biological reproduction, men have low stakes in marriage and fatherhood while women have immense stakes. Hetero marriage tends to make men happier and women more miserable, fatherhood is portrayed as low effort and fun for men and as the ultimate sacrifice to women. Men get to glide through life without ever having to think about how much work having a child really is, especially when your partner expects at least your fair share of it out of you. So they go with the flow, end up married with kids, and when it's not the convenient, exclusively beneficial arrangement they were taught to expect from ye olden days, they cheat, dip, start a different family, etc.
As a female person, I knew very early that I didn't want children or marriage, at least certainly not in the context of a typical family. I know I am not capable of providing half or more of a child's care, but as a woman it's a given that I would provide at least half at best. If I marry a man, it's most likely to make me less happy, it helps a man's career prospects but hurts a woman's. I can see how men who've had the privilege of expecting marriage and children to be an act in service to them rather than a concerted massive effort at least two people need to exert to make work, break and ruin their families. They would have been much happier if they'd known the reality of it and not had kids and a marriage they never actually wanted.

I always thought the worst thing was when a parent looked at you and said "I'm not mad, just disappointed." now I know that there is a worse version, and it comes from your own child. I can't even imagine the pain I would feel in my heart not only knowing I let my child down, but that they know HOW I let them down, and that they saw it. I’m so blessed that I had 2 wonderful parents who loved each other until my mom passed away. Of course they had rough times but they always stayed together. I miss them both. ❤
I also unknowingly outed my dad to my mom when i was around 8. He’d go on business trips to China for weeks at a time and was having an affair with a really young coworker (he was 46 and she was 23) there and would tell me about all the weekend trips he’d go on. My parents and I were at someone’s house and my dad was asked how he manages staying away from home for so long and I apparently chimed in that he goes on weekend trips with his “friend.” I didn’t know better yet but my mom heard that and was suspicious. Long story short, my parents ended up divorcing and my dad married that girl. I’m 25 now, he’s still with her and they’re miserable

My father in law was in open marriages his whole life up until my MIL. Every marriage failed, and he lost every one of the three sets of kids who resulted from these different marriages because the kids absolutely hated their parents for it. Actually he hasn’t seen one set of kids since they were underage. It’s not surprising because the stats are that 92% of open or swinger marriages end in divorce, compared to the 50% the rest of us have. The only marriage of his that lasted was the monogamous one with my “good girl” mother in law. They are getting old now and will die together. The problem with fricking around is that you find out. There’s always someone more attractive, more accomplished, better in bed, makes more money, etc etc if you keep looking for sex partners. It’s also kinda hard (pun intended) to not catch feelings when you’re meeting up for sex regularly if that person is better in some way than your own spouse. We had a local couple who were swingers because the woman married an ugly man for money. She, of course, wanted to play with more attractive men and the man agreed because then he could do other women so why not? Well well well, so around comes an attractive couple that was younger and down for it. Not rich though, just pretty. Wife was stoked to sleep with a younger more attractive man. Husband started sleeping with the pretty younger wife and boom! She’s like “hey-you have money. We don’t. Maybe I should be with you instead?” So old wife lost her man to a younger woman who was better looking 😂

So story time:
My mom had me with my dad and they split before i was born. When i was 3 my mom got pregnant with my brother and before she gave birth she was engaged and moved in with a guy say called steve. We were a pretty happy family of 4. Yes they bickered sometimes but who doesn't! Well fast forward to me at 12ish years old my brother is 9ish. My brother was playing outside with friends. I ran inside to use the bathroom and my mom and steve were having an argument in the bedroom. All of a sudden i hear steve yell, "i don't even have to be here! Their not my kids!" My face turned white. I ran outside and immediately told my brother. I ruined his life. He had called him dad and known him that way for 9 years. He was my step dad. We loved him. Mom and steve split after that. Steve moved to a different country, got married, and had 4 kids. We have all since re connected as adults and still see him as our dad.
My brother wanted to know his "real" dad. (Which turned out to be trash and didn't care....) but my brother found out he had a half brother say called jeff and is apart of our family to this day.
Also hilarious side note!! My brother met jeff when i was 15. When i was 13 i dated a boy named jeff for a year...... yeahhh..... same jeff..... i dated my brothers brother......😂😂😂😂😂

@mKierstenk we actually found out in person. My brother set up a meet up with him at a local restaurant so that jeff could meet me and our mom. I knew his name but didn't think anything about it because it is a super common name. Jeff was facing away from the door so we didn't see each other until we were right next to each other. We both yelled out at the same time (this is your sister?!?)-(this is your brother?!?)
My mom and brother were confused and asked what was wrong. We both looked ill and said at the same time, "we used to date!" My brother just started laughing his butt off! It was awkward at first but we laugh about it now. Even though were not related my brother likes to randomly start singing sweet home alabama at family functions now....lmaooo im 29 so this was like 15 years ago at this point but it still makes me chuckle! That first story crushed me. When you're a kid & your parent tells you that something is your fault, you believe it! When I was 9, my dad fought my mom for custody & won. My mom told me that it was my fault & I believed that for YEARS.
First story has me, as somebody who has had my dad blame me for his actions (now he didn't cheat but he did some pretty bad things) he told me that it wasn't far to him that he had to be distracted by calling me when he has more importing things in his life. There's a reason OP couldn't tell their mom, the biggest thing is how they were blamed for their dad cheating, I'm sure op has this internalized fear that their mom will also blame them. The things you say to children leave an impact, both good and bad. I would never ever blame somebody else for my actions let alone a child.

My brother and I use to drive by a motel and see my dad’s work truck parked outside. We knew he was cheating on our “stepmom”. Honestly, we could care less. She was absolutely horrible to us because we weren’t “her kids”. She did everything to keep our dad away from us on our weekends with him. She left in the morning with him and came back at night. Meanwhile, I was preparing bottles, changing diapers and bathing my 2 very young half siblings. I was only 12 or 13 years old. I honestly don’t regret taking care of them instead of running around like other kids my age. Because my little sister (now a mom) is one of my best friends. But, her mother is still a b@$%ch. She told me her mom feels bad about how she treated me. But, I haven’t heard an apology. I’m not trying to let my dad off the hook. He should of fought to spend time with us and told her to kick sand. But, I never had any doubt that he loved me. That means a lot to a kid.

Around 1998/99 My husband followed his dad and found out he was having an affair. Confronted him and told him he needs to tell his wife his mom. He did and she was devastated. They split for a while but got back together. When I first met them around 2002 it didn’t seem like a loving relationship. Even now they are nip pickers at each other. My husband said to my now mother in law at the time not to take him back. But she did for the kids.
The Dad is obviously a sociopathic narcissist and he's gaslighting that poor child. This is serious, this kid needs help ASAP! Gotta tell Mom and after she's kicked both he and her Sister to curb, they both need DEEP therapy. The girl who headlocked "Dan" ... I'm guessing from how she acts that it's not that she had a crush on her friend's father, it's that somewhere in her unconscious she knew Dan was a predator and tried to minimize his threat by being "playful" and buddy-buddy... I found out from my own experience that when I was being playful but still slightly violent with men as a teen it was me minimizing predators, I realised that I did this with married men who played around (I didn't know they played around at the time) and I was hypervigilant about where they were when they were around... so... yeah, Trauma.

My friends all really liked my dad because he was always helping with car repairs, or fixing stereos, etc. Several guys that I dated and broke up with were okay with the break-up, but asked if it was okay if they still visit my dad! "Of course!" Their friendship is independent of me.
Why do people cheat? Do they feel good? Dont they feel crappy about themselves? Forget about someone ratting them out.. How can you even respect yourself?
One time I was returning from a trip. I drove back through the night, rather than stay away an extra night.
On the way home I stopped in a store to buy my wife flowers.
It was about 4am. The woman at the checkout said lightheartedly, “are you in the doghouse?”
She assumed that I was buying flowers because I was in trouble with my wife. I decided I would tell her the truth, “my wife likes flowers, especially carnations, so I decided to bring some home as a surprise for her, on my way home for a trip.”
Just because we buy flowers, it doesn’t mean that we are in trouble, it can be that our partner likes them, and we enjoy seeing the pleasure on their face when we give them.
My late wife and I had an amazing and close relationship, and she would always be so happy when I would randomly surprise her with gifts.
I loved seeing the joy on her face at such times.
I didn’t go away often, but when I did, I couldn’t wait to get home.

My parents were married over 40 years when my dad died. My mom died about 3-4 years later and was never the same without him.
He traveled all over the world with his job and always brought her nice gifts from exotic places. My brother and I got nice gifts too, especially when he was in Australia for almost 2 years.
He brought her some beautiful quality jewelry that I own now.
He had a big garden in our back yard and grew many varieties of roses all along the back fence. When they were blooming, he'd go out every morning and find the most perfect blooms to bring her. She wasn't able to walk that far, so could no longer go out to see them blooming on the vines. I think that meant more to her than any jewelry.

For the teens out there who say they don't want their mum/dad to know that their husband/wife is cheating on them "because they don't want their perfect family to be torn apart" : I'm sorry. But if one of your parents is cheating on your other parent, they should know!
It may be "keeping the perfect family together" for you, but for the parent being cheated on, it's years of their lives (themselve's and the rest of the family's) waisted on someone who went out of their way to break their family behid their back by sleeping with someone else. Whether or not you say anything, the cheating is always found out sooner or later, one way or another. And trust me, once the truth comes out on its own, and you see their heartbreak whilst carrying the fact that you knew and did and said nothing, that guilt will eat at you for years. And in the long run, can even damage the relationship you have with the parent who was cheated on.
This is information you'd want to know if you were in your parent's shoes. So when you see or find out about something like this happening, do something about it. Tell the family.
FACTS! There was a Reddit story where a man found out his daughter knew that her mother was cheating on him. So he took back all of the money he set aside for her college education (4 years) and disowned her. He has absolutely zero contact with her and they’re both now married (him remarried, new spouse), with children.
My dad died when I was 11, he was my hero and I adored him. My mum told me it was my fault because he was working hard to look after me, just me! He obviously wasn’t working to look after her and my sister?! My mum really hated me but my sister was her blue eyed angel.

This hits home with me personally. My parents got divorced when I turned 18, not sure why they waited so long, but their relationship was always a bit on the messy side. Dad never told any of us if the allogations of him cheating on her were true, and I might even have 2 half sisters living in Oregon. I think because of this my brothers and I are very much monogamous and have attachment issues. On the video note, if I caught my dad cheating in public at a coffee shop I would have cursed him out, ordered 2 more coffees (I need my own of course) but thrown both in their faces and ask the woman why she thought that having an affair with a married man was ok, and to get pregnant on top of that. I'm also pretty petty 🙂 as much as these kids don't want to out their parent, they really need too. Ask yourself if it were you wouldn't you want to know if your SO was cheating on you? Of course you would!
Just make sure the coffee's cooled. No sense sitting in a cage for these asshats.
I can relate, it sucks when parents divorce and one was seeing another person.
My mom was a continuous cheater. When she was married to my father (sperm donor), it worked because he was the same way. When they finally divorced and she remarried my dad (step-dad but was always there for me and went to all my soccer games even though he HATED sports), it killed me to see how much her continuous cheating hurt him. But he stayed by her side even after she broke up his sister's marriage by cheating with her husband. A couple years before he died, he was talking about actually leaving my mom. Us three youngest, fought over who he would come and live with. We left the responsibility of our mom to the four oldest who are just like her. Unfortunately he got cancer not long afterwards and passed rather quickly but I would like to think that he would have come to live with me.
Well as someone that grew up with divorced parents and needed glasses bad I don’t know what to see 🌚

Funny my nan blamed me for my dad leaving... he walked out the day I came home from hospital, I was still a very new human. Totally not my fault mate. He didn't keep his pants on, mum knew, she said go away. But yeah, nan told me when I was 3 it was all my fault.

As someone who has seen cheaters caught red handed, or left their families for their side piece, the one I'm most sad and heartbroken for are the kids. Some of those kids I grew up with their parents and then suddenly they vanish because their parent decided to send them back to the Philippines to their relatives because their now single parent has to double their effort in working and earning for the family. And then there are other cheaters, who just can't stop themselves, it's like they have this itch to always have a side piece even though they were forgiven by their spouses, and in the end, they leave their family, sometimes even for another country with their side piece. Never makes sense how their minds work

Yeah, I was almost in the exact same situation as OP in the 1st story. My dad never blamed me but I was 7-8 as well and I was asleep in the same space where the cheating took place. It's not something you can forget and he promised me that it would never happen again. Which was a lie. Found out recently after he died last year. I never told my stepmom, whom was pregnant at the time, but she use to be really mean to me and I didn't know how to bring it up. I think everyone else in the family but her knows.

I work in a Zoo checking the tickets. We have annual tickets with photos. One day a dad showed me his ticket and the ticket of his wife, but the woman with him was someone else. He also had his son with him (children are inclusive with the annual ticket). She needed to buy her own ticket and was really pissy about it. Some time later another woman came with her toddler, it was the woman from the photo. She was emotional, said she needs to go inside but her husband has the ticket. I let her in, because I recognized her. 20minutes later she left with her son and thanked me for letting her inside. She looked so broken but also collected to don‘t make her children worry :‘(
Storytime: My Dad suspected his father was cheating. Followed him one day. Yep, his Dad went to a woman’s home, and went in for quite some time. When he emerged, my Dad confronted him, hid father told him what he did was none of his (my Dad’s) damn business, and then punched my Dad out right there on the street. My Dad was a teenager at the time.
Sadly it's not that uncommon, my dad got caught because he took me to his mistresses house and would give me her old toys adn leave me alone in a strange house for a really long time, and apparently it never occured to him that I would talk to my mom or grandparents about how much I hated being alone in the strange house. I was four if I remember properly, verbal child. :)
Once again I get to say that nothing has changed, it's just out there on the internet. In the 50's my mom started telling everyone I "told stories" and lied. She called me a liar. I wasn't even 5 yrs old yet. I remember and I'm deep in therapy at 72. So to the young girls who were told or feel they are to blame are not. The adults are the ones responsible. Period.

I’m so glad I grew up with one parent instead of two. It sounds like so much more pressure on the child. Even just having to please two parents sounds exhausting to me. Idk. My husband and I are super close tho. We never argue or fight. We talk things out and find solutions. And we always support each other. No matter what. Even tho I don’t like some of the things he does, I always get excited watching him and listening to him talk about his passions. His whole face lights up. I love it.
Edit: I know it just depends on what your relationship is like and who you are as people. Our kids don’t have any pressure in letting us down. They call us about everything and tell us everything. I wouldn’t want it any other way. Make sure you always let people know you love them. And exude understanding and empathy over apathy and resentments.
