On the contrary, he would have strongly and loudly condemned these attitudes. A key figure in this abuse is Eric Metaxas, whose 2010 biography of Bonhoeffer was first published in the United States and sold more than a million copies in 20 languages. In the book, he ignored the historical context and misrepresented Bonhoeffer as a fundamentalist Evangelical. Metaxas, now a right-wing Trump supporter, regularly compares US President Biden to Hitler, speaks of ‘total war’ and posts photos of a gun on a Bible: “So we can now finally clearly see that Biden is our Hitler. In 1933-34. See my Bonhoeffer book for details. The parallels are staggering and increasingly obvious. Pray for this nation. PRAY.” The right-wing evangelical production company Angel Studios has secured the rights to a new Bonhoeffer movie, and this is now their advertisement on X: “The battle against tyranny begins now. Watch Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin”. The accompanying image shows Dietrich Bonhoeffer holding a gun. The history-distorting biopic, which turns Bonhoeffer into an evangelical saint, is scheduled to hit theaters shortly after the U.S. presidential election. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was not a lone fighter. The Bonhoeffer family was a tight-knit unit and worked together closely during this time. Dietrich’s brother Klaus and his brothers-in-law Hans von Dohnanyi and Rüdiger Schleicher were executed for their resistance activities, just like Dietrich. They were driven by the search for truth, honesty, humanity and the struggle for freedom, the rule of law and democracy. They repudiated religious zealotry, nationalism, militarism, and blind obedience. Those who invoke Dietrich Bonhoeffer to justify anti-democratic, xenophobic aspirations are either misinformed or malicious. The tasteless trivialization of Bonhoeffer’s legacy has encouraged this misuse: he was a complex thinker who was primarily concerned with ethical issues. Unlike the majority of Germans, he did not turn a blind eye to the disenfranchisement, oppression, and mass murder that took place under Nazi dictatorship. His quotes have been taken out of context and reduced to set pieces for all kinds of occasions. More recently, they have increasingly been used by many whose intentions are diametrically opposed to Bonhoeffer’s thoughts and actions; ranging from Project 2025 - the Heritage Foundation’s proposed program for Trump-to the German right-wing extremist Björn Höcke. In a recent statement, theologians and historians who have studied Dietrich Bonhoeffer and his environment, have again spoken out against this appropriation. We are grateful for this. We descendants can bear witness to the attitude passed on in the family. We grew up listening to frequent talk and debate about resistance to National Socialism, its motives and consequences. At a time when intolerance, antisemitism and other forms of racism and xenophobia, nationalism and authoritarianism are on the rise around the world, we believe it is important to clarify publicly: Dietrich Bonhoeffer fought narrow-mindedness, oppression, and exclusion throughout his life. I do so hope this film will be released in South Africa. Bonhoeffer was a touchstone of faith and a hero for us here during the dark days of Apartheid South Africa. The late Rev John Boorman - our Methodist minister in the 70s often referenced him in his sermons. Bonhoeffer's faith and compassion was an inspiration to those from the English churches who were standing up for those who were marginalised, persecuted and unseen. So grateful to Angel Studios for telling his story.
Ending Apartheid was not godly or Christian. It was a Marxist motivated act of suicidal compassion. Apartheid was a rational moral law that protected a civilized people from a low intelligence highly violent and criminal group. Now SA is a hell hole. Violence is rampant. It's the rape capital in of the world. Whites are under siege and being murdered for their land. I infrastructure is failing, institutions collapsing as the incapable take over for the capable. I left the theater speechless and feeling oddly empowered. I felt like I was a new Christian again...full of awe and inspiration. This movie really is so beautifully done. You cannot escape the impact of Bonhoeffer. He affected so many people and now through your film and the book, maybe millions more. Congrats on a stunning and profound movie.
@@lucasvick8733 No, it's in English. Maybe for foreign versions it will but here in the US, you don't need them. The dialect is easily understood and the actors German accents (most of the actors are German) don't make it hard to understand their English.

I am SO EXCITED for this film!! My German father of Jewish descent (but of Christian faith) taught us all our lives about the great Bonhoeffer and I am STOKED now to see his story on the screen for all the world to know. I never go to theatres but I will be there on opening day for this one! (Also my friend is in it, and that's incredibly cool, but definitely secondary to the important story.)
There are a lot of good movies out in theaters, especially from Angel Studios. My wife and I have seen some amazing movies without the language, etc. Keep your eye open for them.
@@lufesaro7741 It's true that he held some theological beliefs that don't line up with the beliefs of many (possibly even most? it's hard to say for sure) Christian sects. I personally disagree strongly with some of his theology (as did my father, just for the record), and that makes me sad. I do, however, believe that he, along with many others, was an absolute hero of his time and have huge respect for his struggle against hatred and evil in his country.

I certainly hope very much that he was a true believer. But based on his writings, particularly later in his life, he doesn't seem to have even believed in the idea of individual salvation, much less accepted it for himself. I'd suggest reading either his books or reliable analyses of his books (again, particularly the later ones) so that you can draw your own conclusions.

So many things about this movie were incredible. The script and acting particularly so. Every tiny detail was shining with sincerity, earnestness, and a sort of... otherworldly peace. I was so impressed and moved.

Oh, my word! I have been so anxious to see this man’s story on the big screen. He has been a hero to me for a long time. I pray that his story inspires many of us to rise up in the perilous times that we now live in.
Cried through 3 repeated watches of this trailer. It is HIGH TIME this man’s life and courage is brought to film. As a teenager in the early 2000s I loved this man’s story so much and saw him as such a hero of the faith that I was determined to name one of my future kids Dietrich. 😌 Cannot wait to see this and from what I’ve seen so far, I feel Angel Studios is going to do him justice and I’m so grateful for that.

The editing for this trailer -- especially with the appropriation of this song, specifically -- is outstanding. As the noted himself: "To not act, is to act. To not speak, is to speak." He chose to act, to speak -- to demonstrate that grace, though freely given, was is not cheap but costly. Very much looking forward to the viewing.
I read Eric Metaxas book about him a decade ago, and what struck me the most were two things: most Christians supported Hitler, Bonhoeffer believed actions against evil is just as important in faith as studying/preaching/pastoring. It's a curious time we are living in, and it's also very curious Eric himself became one of the biggest Trump supporter in the Christian world.
This is a profetic warning of what is to come. Choose this day whom you are to serve. I pray we choose Abba, whom shed the blood of Messiah to bring us close to Him.

Just saw this movie at AMC Screen Unseen. Had no idea what we were in for, but wow it was awe-inspiring and impactful. I'm not religious, but seeing the way he was portrayed as truly devoted to his religion and saving his country was enough to make me shed tears at least twice during the movie (my mom probably 8 times) - acting was amazing and I'm glad I got to learn the story of Bonhoeffer

An inspiring account of the much needed story. How many of us stay silent when we see injustices. My husband & I watched it in theaters and was sad to see the theater empty, with just the two of us.

Too bad the Lutheran church was complicit with the Nazi regime. It was a relatively small cadre of Lutherans known as the Confessing Church who stayed true to scripture and stood against authoritarian genocide. Bonhoeffer is the best known due to his writing while in prison.

Bonhoeffer was not silent on societal and political evils that were against Christ and his Word. He was outspoken against the evil gaining power, even political power in Germany. Many modern reformed evangelicals today, especially those apart of the “gospel centered movement”, will watch and love this movie, not even realizing they are nothing like Bonhoeffer when it comes to his Christlike boldness.
Eberhard Bethge wrote a wonderful biography. He was Bonhoeffer’s assistant, and a good bit of the information is first hand, which is great. The film is more half-baked reality, but I’m hopeful that it might be…entertaining.
I went Into the film thinking it was a Biography. The plot was confusing until the very end when I figured out it was anti genocide propaganda with a taste of Bonhoeffer.. the meat and potatoes of Bonhoeffer and his significance was watered down. Overall, looking at it as propaganda, I liked it. I agree with the message.
I've always admired Bonhoeffer, loved the Barmen Declaration, and studied the Deutche Christen heresy and persecution. It's always been a shame to me that we haven't had them depicted in a movie like this, and here it is! I'm so excited.

Funny how all the evangelicals I know aren’t telling me how much I should see this movie. This will be the first movie about the church that I encourage them to see.

I am so afraid to watch Sounds of Freedom. When it has to do with abusing children it is very hard for me.
You encapsulated that perfectly: Hollywood is content without meaning. It's all one giant commercial for the next thing. I stopped going about 8 years ago and started going to Church again. One of the best decisions I've ever made.
I felt the same way but finally just watched it and am so glad I did. It was extremely well made with the utmost reverance toward such a sensitive subject. Highly recommend seeing it FOR the sake of the innocent children. 🙏
I do so hope this film will be released in South Africa. Bonhoeffer was a touchstone of faith and a hero for us here during the dark days of Apartheid South Africa. The late Rev John Boorman - our Methodist minister in the 70s often referenced him in his sermons. Bonhoeffer's faith and compassion was an inspiration to those from the English churches who were standing up for those who were marginalised, persecuted and unseen. So grateful to Angel Studios for telling his story.

@@lucasvick8733 No, it's in English. Maybe for foreign versions it will but here in the US, you don't need them. The dialect is easily understood and the actors German accents (most of the actors are German) don't make it hard to understand their English.

I am SO EXCITED for this film!! My German father of Jewish descent (but of Christian faith) taught us all our lives about the great Bonhoeffer and I am STOKED now to see his story on the screen for all the world to know. I never go to theatres but I will be there on opening day for this one! (Also my friend is in it, and that's incredibly cool, but definitely secondary to the important story.)
There are a lot of good movies out in theaters, especially from Angel Studios. My wife and I have seen some amazing movies without the language, etc. Keep your eye open for them.

@@lufesaro7741 It's true that he held some theological beliefs that don't line up with the beliefs of many (possibly even most? it's hard to say for sure) Christian sects. I personally disagree strongly with some of his theology (as did my father, just for the record), and that makes me sad. I do, however, believe that he, along with many others, was an absolute hero of his time and have huge respect for his struggle against hatred and evil in his country.

@@lufesaro7741 I would never presume to know the condition of another person's heart, especially a person that I've never known or talked to personally. I certainly hope very much that he was a true believer. But based on his writings, particularly later in his life, he doesn't seem to have even believed in the idea of individual salvation, much less accepted it for himself. I'd suggest reading either his books or reliable analyses of his books (again, particularly the later ones) so that you can draw your own conclusions.

Every time I go to watch an Angel Studios movie in theaters I always see a trailer to an even better one.
So many things about this movie were incredible. The script and acting particularly so. Every tiny detail was shining with sincerity, earnestness, and a sort of... otherworldly peace. I was so impressed and moved.

Cried through 3 repeated watches of this trailer. It is HIGH TIME this man’s life and courage is brought to film. As a teenager in the early 2000s I loved this man’s story so much and saw him as such a hero of the faith that I was determined to name one of my future kids Dietrich. 😌 Cannot wait to see this and from what I’ve seen so far, I feel Angel Studios is going to do him justice and I’m so grateful for that.

I read Eric Metaxas book about him a decade ago, and what struck me the most were two things: most Christians supported Hitler, Bonhoeffer believed actions against evil is just as important in faith as studying/preaching/pastoring. It's a curious time we are living in, and it's also very curious Eric himself became one of the biggest Trump supporter in the Christian world.

Just saw this movie at AMC Screen Unseen. Had no idea what we were in for, but wow it was awe-inspiring and impactful. I'm not religious, but seeing the way he was portrayed as truly devoted to his religion and saving his country was enough to make me shed tears at least twice during the movie (my mom probably 8 times) - acting was amazing and I'm glad I got to learn the story of Bonhoeffer

Too bad the Lutheran church was complicit with the Nazi regime. It was a relatively small cadre of Lutherans known as the Confessing Church who stayed true to scripture and stood against authoritarian genocide. Bonhoeffer is the best known due to his writing while in prison.

Bonhoeffer was not silent on societal and political evils that were against Christ and his Word. He was outspoken against the evil gaining power, even political power in Germany. Many modern reformed evangelicals today, especially those apart of the “gospel centered movement”, will watch and love this movie, not even realizing they are nothing like Bonhoeffer when it comes to his Christlike boldness.

I went Into the film thinking it was a Biography. The plot was confusing until the very end when I figured out it was anti genocide propaganda with a taste of Bonhoeffer.. the meat and potatoes of Bonhoeffer and his significance was watered down.
Overall, looking at it as propaganda, I liked it. I agree with the message.

I've always admired Bonhoeffer, loved the Barmen Declaration, and studied the Deutche Christen heresy and persecution. It's always been a shame to me that we haven't had them depicted in a movie like this, and here it is! I'm so excited.

Looks great! I'd love to see more of these films on heroes of the Christian faith. In particular, I'd like to see films on David Wilkerson ('The Cross & The Switchblade') + Nicky Cruz ('Run Baby Run'), like a part 1 & 2, but also a fresh adaptation of 'The Hiding Place'.
