  • This video I walk through Michael's Yarn Department and wonder why it is getting so small?? I wish craft stores would remember us needlework crafters who love to go to the store and see and BUY our yarns.
Give me your thoughts on buying in store or on-line in the comment section.
I hope this video has been helpful seeing what yarns they do have.
    Thanks for stopping by today.

I agree yarn is getting harder to find on the shelves, guess online sales are where the money is. I personally like feeling and seeing yarn myself.

It seems that, at least with my local stores, they are starting to focus more on their house brands and limiting the “name brands”.

Hi Glenda from Australia, you were looking at yarn the other day and you had trouble with a name. You pronounce 'boucle', booclay. Hope this helps 😊

Michael’s, the last & only craft store on my island, went from several aisles of yarn down to just 2 half size shelves back in 2019. Now I have to buy 90% of my yarn online, which I dislike bc I love to feel how soft (or isn’t) the yarn is before buying it. So sad.

It looks to me that Hobby Lobby is slowly phasing out its crafts division. Last time i went they had shrunk not only the yarn department, but also the fabric, department, the framing department. the cake decorating area and many others, i think they want to become a home decor store exclusively. This is what At Home did. They started out as a crafts and floral store called Garden Ridge, later on they got rid of all the crafts supplies and became a home decor store and changed their name to At Home.

Seeing a yarn department in that sort of disrepair speaks to me saying that the management takes very little time in teaching sales reps to maintain a retail store, especially, open bins of yarn. A well stocked bin with multiple units of same shade will sell more if the bins are kept full. I will not purchase a skein of yarn which the label been ripped off and then repaired communicates to me that the yarn itself has possibly been purchased then returned or the cusumer ripped label to see pattern on reverse side.

I've been wondering the same thing lately, especially since they closed the A.C. Moore stores. Caron Skinny Cakes have been discontinued and it was the only 3 weight yarn. Also Chunky and Cloud cakes are no more. I've been so disappointed the last few times I've gone. I've been using up my stash this year.

It's a shame that their yarn section has decreased as well as Hobby Lobby. I hate ordering online yarn because I prefer to touch before buying and to match the same color or mix & match.

In Michaels about a month ago and the shelves had plenty of yarn. Returned last week and was shocked at how bare the shelves were. Reminds me of WalMart when they downsized that department to next to nothing. Joanns is a bit of a drive for me, but I will try them again, but it sounds like all these stores are downsizing their yarn departments. I don’t like having to select yarn online. No way to feel the texture and the colors can vary between cell phones, tablets and computers. Also, you can’t put the skeins against each other to see how they blend.
What is happening? Are these companies clueless when it comes to the customers?

    • @Sonika377
      @Sonika377 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I agree they are clueless . At south Florida we need more cotton and any yarn that works for a summer project. They bring a yarn that is useless for our area since we have a very short winter . however, people crochet and knit and needs materials that adjust to the area it is sold . or keep and area that you can lool for the yarn one needs with samples and order on line ..

Michaels just opened a new store near me in NJ about 6 months ago. The yarn isle is about 20 feet long on one side and half that on the other side. Nearly half of the bins were empty. Very few color selections. Very disappointed. Looks like they are more home decor than crafting. I want my AC Moore back.

I'm in Connecticut. I miss AC Moore so much. It was my favorite craft store. This was before I even knew how to crochet. These days I turn to JoAnn and Walmart for yarn I use. AC Moore was closing right when I was learning the Fiber Arts. I remember all the beautiful yarn.

  • @kathycannon2830
    @kathycannon2830 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Thought it was just my Michaels. I only got one a couple years ago when it took over AC Moore. At first I was so excited, but then more and more I started to see that I often had to go with either my second or third choice if there was something specific I wanted. Even a popular brand like Bernat blanket, I had to go to Joanns to get the color I wanted.

Michaels does not care about anyone who uses yarn. Never get an answer as to when yarn might be delivered or best days to shop for yarn. You get a stupid blank stare and an I don’t care attitude. Don’t know if the management doesn’t care, doesn’t get it or don’t like their job. Usually the yarn is mixed up messed up pulled apart as though a crazed maniac went through. When I want yarn I follow your suggestion and I order on line. Thank you for all you do! For your patterns and quiet patience in teaching. I have been crocheting as long as I can remember but I can always find a new idea with you!

Before Covid the regular Caron Cakes were $7.99 and all of the others were $10. Now the regular ones are $10 and all the others are $13. it's just not worth going to Michaels anymore. I would much rather either shop the lion brand website sales or go to Hobby Lobby. Hobby Lobby has their yarn 30% off every other week I think, and their yarn is BEAUTIFUL.

The reason why the yarn isle are different prices and empty is because we are re organizing the store and we are getting NEW items to sell so when you see items less money and other items more money is because the whole store is getting new stuff so we are trying to get rid of the older stuff!!

It seems that Michael’s, like all the other stores, have different stock in different stores. Our store (about 45 minutes south of me) is mostly store brand, 2nd is Caron, followed by a little bit of Lion Brand. And all the stores in my area are like this & it’s frustrating beyond belief. The only option is to find good mail order companies & most of the major brands sell from their own company.

They might be low on stock because it looks like from the blue stickers covering some of the price tags that they are going to do Inventory soon. Less product they put out, the less they have to count. We'll see if they have more yarn after Inventory. Also, there is usually always a 20% off coupon on their website, so even if you forget to bring a coupon, just whip out your phone and use the free wifi.

I miss shopping for Red Heart yarn. Was one of the most affordable yarns out there.. Hobby Lobby "messed" up by replacing their Red Heart yarn with another yarn brand. & I have noticed that the craft sections in a lot of the stores I frequent have been shrinking steadily over the past few years, even more so during the "plandemic".

At my Michael’s they mostly sell their store brand of yarn, which is Loops & Threads. Hobby Lobby mostly sells their own brand, I Love This Yarn. Prob. more profitable for them-but how will this affect our favorite manufacturers? Hobby Lobby did something similar with their scrapbooking supplies a few years ago-they mostly sell their own PaperStudio brand. Not to mention taking away their 40% off coupon! Many of us still like to go to a store to check out textures and color choices for the yarn we buy. This is why so many storefronts are going out of business. Come on America! Please let’s keep our local businesses going!

The only thing I can say is the 40% does come up on occasion as a register recipt coupon. As well as 30% and 20% but the promote is the rewards program and probably why that discount went down. Among other things corporate world related.

Boucle is a curly yarn and is pronounced 'boo' 'clay', I quite like it if I have the right pattern for it. The colour of that Twisted Tones yarn that you picked up was gorgeous and would probably soften up nicely with a bit of fabric softener, but a little too expensive for my pocket. I wish Michael's would offer international shipping as I'd love to try some of their Loops and Threads yarns, as long as they didn't rip us off like Joann's do. So far, I haven't seen anybody that has managed to buy the Caron Simply Soft Speckles, anywhere, is this a ploy by the companies to make the demand soar so that they can charge silly money for it? Thanks for another great video, Glenda xx

That bouclé yarn was specified for a teddy bear pattern that I found there last December and could never find. Finally they brought it in! And chenille is pronounced chay-neal.
That Michael’s is better than than mine!

There are no Michael’s, Joann, or Hobby Lobby in Hawaii. Walmart used to have a pretty good selection of the major brands, but no more. Hardly worth it to drive there. I do have a small Hawaii chain craft store nearby, but they don’t have space for much yarn. Though they have invested in more Lion Brand, also my fave, so that’s nice. What they do is choose a type of yarn then get it in lots of colors, like the old workhorses- Lily cotton, scrubby, Red Heart SS, recently Lion Brand Hometown. There were three indie yarn shops on Oahu with amazing selections of unique yarns crammed into small shops. But post pandemic there’s only one left. 😢

It is pathetic now. I had worked there for over 11yrs, and when I had worked there it was a nice store, clean and what not, and almost everything was stocked pretty good, but now it looks like they all just leave at the end of the day with no cleanup anymore, no sweeping or returning products to where they should be, what was in aisle 7 would have been brought back to its proper, well, home in the correct aisle. A lot of it is the store management too because they just don’t care what it looks like.

Mine is exactly the same. They said that they haven't carried Red Heart in over a year. I didn't see any style craft yarn. No new caron yarn either. Oh well, back online I go.

I saw another TH-cam crocheter bought the Caron Simply soft speckle at Joanne's. I haven't been to my local Joanne's lately, so I'm not sure what they have.

Not to be dramatic but I need to finish a project that I used the craftsmart wine colored yarn for. I have been looking everywhere for it. Idek when the color will be back. Or how to get a color that’s the same as the one I used. I want to finish it b4 school starts back up. But it looks like that won’t happen 😢

Boo Clay is that nubby yarn. Not enough of any of them on the shelf for the ones you want to make a blanket out of.

I don't have a Michael's where I live, but Hobby Lobby and Joanne's have cut back their yarn department as well. Walmart used to carry a decent selection of Red Heart Super Saver, but even Walmart has cut back drastically. Don't these places know that since Covid, there has been a resurgence of crochet and knitting? I hate ordering through the mail, like Herrshner's because I like to feel and hold colors together in person. So sad.

JoAnn's larger stores have the speckle yarn. Vintage is my favorite. It's great to see what yarn looks like rather relying on photos. I don't like Loops and Threads and Impeccable yarns. I prefer Caron yarn or Red Heart Soft.

My Michael's yarn department has dwindled and our new Hobby Lobby was disappointing. I want to see and feel it. My last two projects I had to go online to get yarn

I agree my Michaels has no yarn in center isle anymore. Hardly any yarn. Michaels is just awful. This summer had no new cotton yarns came out couldn't believe it

Prices are ridiculous! Yarns are getting shorter and shorter on length, but the prices keep going up. I may have to quit crocheting much of anything.

I thought maybe it was just my Michaels, but your store looks similar. I feel like Michaels has been struggling since COVID. Prices went up and their selection changed. Maybe they are slimming down other brands while focusing on their Loops and Threads line. 🤔I check out Joann's now when I want yarn right away. It's still expensive.

I stopped looking for yarn at Michael’s right around Covid. They always seemed to have odds and ends or lot numbers that didn’t match. I’m also not the biggest fan of shopping for yarn online but I feel like I don’t have any choice.
