I work at hobby lobby, and in fact, I am the head of the needle arts department. The department is shrinking, but so is pretty much every other department in the store. Apparently they say, and by they, I mean corporate, that the money is in seasonal. So seasonal will be expanding, and everything else will be shrinking. Each side of an aisle, is called a side, and needle arts is losing one side. Most departments are losing one side, but some are losing two. Needle arts is also moving up behind fabric in our store. Those types of changes depend on the layout of each individual store, because they are not all the same. They are not all the same because every building is not the same. The placement of most things in every store is very similar, but it may flow in a different way. It does appear, that the majority of the yarn that has been clearanced, is yarn that is not a hobby lobby brand. But the truth of the matter is, that is the yarn that sells the least. I do the ordering in at my department every week, and I very rarely have to order non-hobby lobby brand yarn. Feel free to call the corporate office and express how you feel about the changes. Personally, I think some of it is going to come back to bite them. A lot of our customers have expressed negative feelings about the changes.

I agree, they look at what sells and that is what they make their money on. Hobby Lobby has great yarn brands and that is what people go there for, I can see that they will drop the items that make less money. People are going to Amazon to buy the more rare items so it doesn't pay these big stores to carry items that don't sell well

Mostly because people think decorating is a form of craftiness (which it is), but that's what makes up the pit of the store. HL still has quite the selection of crafting/art supplies. But yeah, it's mostly because not a lot of people craft anymore and they mostly come in for the decor/seasonal (which seasonal is mostly decor also)

I hope that HL does not become another Michael's because if it does, I won't be shopping there any more. Why do "craft" stores even carry ready made seasonal and home decorating items. It's a craft store. If we want to decorate our home with pre-made things, go to a Home Depot or Walmart.

Current hobby lobby, employee. David Green has not stepped down from anything, nor has he turned over the running of the company to anyone else. That is a misinterpretation of what he said in an interview. What David Green meant was that he had given the company over to God, and that means he doesn’t claim ownership of his company, because everything he has belongs to God. Everything he has came from God, and he just realizes he is only a steward in caretaker of what he has. David Green is still running the company, rest assured.

I hope the change in The Hobby Lobby in Texas won’t change! If it does I’ll be forced to buy my yarn at Walmart!! Michael’s is a joke, when it comes to yarn. They used to have several rows of yarn…your lucky now if there’s one full row of yarn! Hobby Lobby seems to be following too!! I don’t buy yarn on line because, I guess I’m old fashion, I like to feel of it and look at the colors to make sure that’s what I want! A lot of the times colors look different online than they do in person.
I’m sure it probably won’t be long until all the “yarn craft stores” close! I hope my stock is enough to last me!

I can confirm at my HL they are doing a major store floor plan reorganization/remodel. They did have a lot of their yarn on clearance and I spoke to one of the sales women and asked about why they are marking down the yarn so early this year. Her response was due to the remodel was all they were told. When I was in there they were in the middle of marking down a lot of the crochet hooks and knitting needles and other notions in that department. I was able to get some Clover hooks for $2.49 which I was really happy about. They still had one more isle of yarn to mark down so I will be going back on Monday. I long for the days that Michaels was Lee Wards, and had a wall of just RHSS, in just about every color/variegation made... and there was a decent selection and range of colors of other brands, too. And a decent amount of most of them in stock, as well. Small shops (at least around here) tend to have limited selection, and limited amounts of what they carry in-stock, and those yarns tend to be unsuitable for any usage requiring machine wash/dry or "sturdiness". And the yarns aren't just "a little bit" more expensive-- the prices are twice (or more) the cost of big box store yarns.

Totally agree with you that Michaels yarn selection has gone way down. Used to be my go-to for yarn. I buy most of my yarn now at Joanns, HL is second and it's for their brands of yarn. I just can't get onboard with buying yarn online. I have to feel it before I buy it - I know I can return it, but I really love to shop for yarn and most of that is picking up the yarn and holding it. Just not the same for me looking at pictures online. Also, if HL is removing all non-HL brands, I'm hoping Joanns and/or Michaels is listening and they pick up the products discontinued from HL.

Yes, I agree. I spoken with the lady who is always in the yarn department at mine. They are doing a major store reset. The idea is to discount a lot of the product to make the reset a easier process (less to move). They will be also adding new stock. At my store they tried to move the entire fixtures around but ours are so old they almost broke! So once the stock is sold through, the remodel will begin. From my understanding the yarn at mine and cross stitch, another section I shop from will be moving more up front because of its popularity... and not because the isles or stock is shrinking.

They will replace some of the yarn, but most of it will not be replaced. I work at hobby lobby, and I am the needle arts head. I have three full aisles right now right now of needle arts, after the reset I will have 3 1/2. That being said, that means they cannot bring back all the yarn. @bethg7931 ปีที่แล้ว

@@yarning4asmile well, actually the department is shrinking. I am the needle arts head at my store, and I am losing a half an aisle. That means that some yarn will disappear, and then things from the aisle, where the crochet hooks and needles are will, out of necessity also disappear. I won’t have as much space in my department. Therefore, I will not have as much product.. They are doing this in every department in the store, to make room for more seasonal items, which they say, are the biggest money makers.

Maybe this year I will have a chance although I might have to convince my husband why I would want more yarn, lol.

I read that HL was clearing out a whole aisle in the paper-crafting section, and probably other places as well, because they are going to start carrying bathroom decor. I have observed that many Hobby Lobbies are located next to a Home Goods store. Seems like that would be a difficult set of items to move with a decor store right next door.

I'm a DK weight yarn user, and I've noticed that my go-to Yarn Bee yarns are disappearing as well as the color selection of the ones remaining. Their online yarn selection was 6 to seven pages long, and now its down to 3 pages.
It's getting to the point where I will have to shop Ice Yarns brand to get what I need to make my dolls. I've been upset for months now.

That's really unfortunate because Hobby Lobby is supposed to be a crafting store. My Hobby Lobby told me the same thing when I was there a few days ago. They had not been restocking the yarn shelves so there were a lot of empty spaces. The other thing that has been very disappointing is they stopped the every other week 50% off sale on sewology products. Rarely is anything on sale in that area except for buttons and thread once in awhile. I hope the store is not going to turn into a HomeGoods type. There was no clearance at all in the yarn department when I was there several days ago at my store in Ohio.

If I want seasonal crap and home goods, there are plenty of stores that offer such. But when I want the mother ship of crafting supplies, I go to hobby lobby. Michaels has cut back on a lot of things, and so has JoAnn... I guess if one wants to make things from scratch, one must move to China and sign up for a labor camp... I'm glad I'm a senior. Don't like the changes coming our way, as a country, or a world. God bless to those that welcome Him!

All department stores do a seasonal reset! This is the reset for summer. They will do another one in the fall. Yes, some low sellers will not come back. This is normal. I worked retail management for 26 years. Take a deep breath. The amount of yarn will go up again in the fall. People typically don't crochet or knit as much in the summer. They are out enjoying the great outdoors.
Also, seasonal reaets vary by location. What goes good in Maine may not go as well in Florida.

The downsizing is affecting most other “craft” departments to make room for WAY more seasonal aisles 😲 yes stock changes, but at HL that is ONCE A YEAR. They dont do seasonal resets like Michael’s/ Joann’s/ etc. this is a big change, storewide

Most skeins of Hobby Lobby yarn I have ever purchased has had an issue, breaks, inconsistent thickness or something strange. My Hobbi Lobby here in Lake Havasu City, Arizona is the only store for yarn and craft materials, besides our Walmart. We did have a great Michael's a few years ago. But they left due to the store they were in, the landlord would not fix the bad roof leak. Which destroyed alot of merchandise. So they moved out of here. Now the closest stores are 3 hours away either way we drive, besides Jo Ann's. Our mom and pop store doesn't carry much yarn and it's very expensive to buy. Most of the time I get better deals online.

  • @justpinkcandy

I'm not surprised. One of the reasons I stopped shopping at HL is because they got rid of most of their name brands for cheap HL branded stuff, but charging premium prices. Case in point: cake decorating tips. They used to sell Wilton, now they sell flimsy ones, but charge Wilton prices. There are other reasons why I won't give my money to David Green, but that's a long rant that I won't go into it.
99% of my yarn purchases are online, from the UK. We have NO local yarn shops. I'll buy some yarn from US manufacturers, but not much. Wool Warehouse & Hobii are my go to.

HL stores clearance items when they're told to. It's definitely not a standardized date across all stores. They usually get their orders when their freight comes in, which is usually once a week. The best thing to do is call your store and ask them if they've clearanced their yarn yet. You could also ask them when their truck day is, but don't expect them to have clearanced anything on their freight day. Maybe wait until the day after their truck day to call about that, as the managers have had time to comb through the paperwork and have started distributing them to the department heads.

I found 3 shuttles and bought all of them, 6 rolls of crochet thread, 1 roll of tatting thread, a huge embroidery zipper case to put all my tatting stuff in, and a few other little items. I spent way too much money but it was fun. However I don't think I should be buying so much stuff. 😂 I used to work at Michaels so I refuse to shop there anymore. There is no JoAnns in my town. But there's always eBay if I really need something.😀or Walmart.

I feel the same about Michaels. I don't even remember the last time I went to a Michaels store. I feel like they are pushing out the yarn and trying to make us order it online. I guess I am old fashioned but I like to see the yarn in person before I buy it. I want to see it, rub it, feel it, smell it, etc., it might look nice online and be super scratchy, or thin, or to thick. It is unfortunate because I love the Caron Latte & Cotton cakes. Last time I went to my hobby lobby, a few weeks ago, I noticed they are moving things around. I used to go wild at all the clearance sales (Michaels, Joanns & Hobby Lobby). I haven't shopped a clearance in about 3 years because I am trying to use up my stash, but now I'm in a rut because I hate my stash. Thanks for the info!

What kinds of yarns do you have?? Maybe we can spitball some ideas for you to use up some of those meh yarns for you, even if it's just to release the made items into the wild, so to speak via charity or a 2nd hand store.

@@Nightdominia I think I am going to give what I wont use to a retirement community or something similar for them to use. I feel like that would be what's best for me & the yarn. Thanks!!

My HL assistant manager told me today they are going to have less yarn and more seasonal things.

I'm thinking that they are struggling to keep the store open. Grab what you can at the clearance. They have discontinued all the crafting books from my store. Thank you for alerting us to the changes.

I buy crafting books at thrift books online, and at local thrift stores. Some come new from JoAnn and amazon... But check local thrift stores if you're not looking for something specific.

I agree with you. The first time I went to hobby lobby I was disappointed. My issue was too much decorator stuff.

Thanks for the video. I ❤️ HL. It offers so much more than Michael's and Joanne lately. Michael's shelves have been bare, disappointing. I love Lazy Day yarn.😊
