    Dr. No was a gamble. The producers didn't know how it would do. The budget was only $1 million. But it made $60 million. The producers now had a better idea of what worked and that there was an audience for Bond. So, they doubled the budget for the next film. That one made $80 million. Then they pulled out all the stops for the third film. Goldfinger cost $3 million and made $125 million.

    • @ericjanssen394
      @ericjanssen394 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      And once the public knew WHO Bond was and WHAT Bond did, the producers felt freer to raise the stakes to go with the budgets.
      Dr. No is pretty underwhelming, but From Russia With Love and Goldfinger went in knowing what they were doing, now that the bugs were worked out.

    • @lionelraoul
      @lionelraoul 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Also of note, when Goldfinger became a huge hit the producers rereleased the first two in the United States. So some of their total grosses came after the success of the third.

      Taking a million dollars to go shoot in color on location in Jamaica with unknown actors was a HUGE gamble in 1962.

      @@ericjanssen394 From Russia With Love was kind of a mess. Too convoluted, but it was worth it for Lotte Lenya playing an amazing villain. If I hadn’t read the book half a dozen times, I would not have appreciated that movie. Parts of it (the hot, sweaty Gypsy girls) still embarrass me to watch.

    Something to keep in mind for the Bond films, especially in the first ten or twenty years, is how much of a big deal it would have been for ordinary people to see these amazing exotic locations, maybe for the first time. Global travel was probably way beyond the dreams and financial abilities of most people at the time, so these films really were a window to the world.

    I think you’re watching this through cynical millennial glasses. When this film originally came out it was instantly iconic. The gun barrel sequence, the theme/titles, Connery’s bad ass suave character, his stylish suits, the exotic locations, Honey Ryder’s introduction etc etc it’s as much about the style as it is the substance. This was pure popcorn cinema done in a way that hadn’t been seen before.

    I like to see the entire James Bond franchise as a good time capsule, in it we get to see the fears at the time in the form of the villain with the plan, the locations generally visited by tourists, the fashion that was predominant and the generally considered beauties of their moment, so even if they're not all good, or even the ones that are dated, I feel they're worth a watch.

    • @paintedjaguar
      @paintedjaguar 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly. The Bond films, at least the first ones, were wildly popular because they captured the Zeitgeist of the time. They sparked a whole cultural phenomenon, everything from kid's toys, to men's cologne (High Karate), to a whole raft of spy themed TV shows and movies, both serious and parody. Including, by the way, the closest thing you'll ever see to a genuine female version of Bond - the mid 60s TV series "Honey West", starring the wonderful Anne Francis. So settle down, feminists, it's already been done.

    It is actually rather surprising how much of the Bond -elements this movie already has; the M and Moneypenny scenes, Felix Leiter, Bond girl, Megalomanical villain, villain with a handicap or a bizarre quirk, deathtraps, awesome villain's lair and sets along with the opening gunbarrel scene. Still i'd say this is very much the most vanilla of the Bond films, where it does the basic things and not much else. For a lowbudget effort it's quite good but not a bond movie i feel like watching unless i marathon the entire series. It's still a good movie but there will be so many better Bond films after this.

    Food for thought if you don't mind a brief read (skip and enjoy otherwise); just for perspective, aside from "westerns" and "war movies", there really was no "action" genre in 1962. Dr. No was hugely inspired by the success of two films in the previous two years, the first was Albert Hitchcock's North by Northwest, which you guys should watch not only because its a genuine, Hitchcock-thriller CLASSIC, but because it's also quite literally the prototype for the screen version of 007. Cary Grant is the suave, leading man in the business suit getting caught up in high-flying espionage thrills, Eva Marie Saint is a bombshell with a brain, James Mason is the ultra sophisticated villain (English, of course), and Martin Landau is the slightly odd and utterly ruthless henchman. Very much worth your time. And second was a Gregory Peck movie called The Guns of Navarone - very much like a modern Mission: Impossible movie - not historical in any way minus the WWII setting, simply made to entertain and enthrall with a tale of high stakes espionage with non-stop tension, chases, explosions, and shoot-outs. But those films - and Dr. No - jumpstarted the modern action genre by taking the thrills and "action" of westerns and war movies and planting them into more modern times, or with a more modern sensibility (by that time meaning a willingness to openly acknowledge sexuality on screen and to show blood/ death/ horror onscreen as well).
    Ursula Andress' bikini is no big deal today, but at the time, to many westerners and certainly in the U.S., the "French" bikini was still very much a rare and exotic sight. It was shockingly close to "near-naked", and although conservative audiences labeled the film exploitative (and rightly so), a whole new generation of 1960's teenagers were riding the wave of a new era in education, arts, and PEACE! Music was changing, young people were getting smarter faster, and movies were becoming more graphic and "real" at the same time, trying to stay hip and relevant.
    So what seems kind of quaint by post-John Woo standards was cutting edge, near-pornographic shock at the time. You didn't want your mother to see a James Bond film, you know? And when all the young men started borrowing the lines and acting all "cool" like Sean Connery, naturally the girls wanted to know what all the snickers and hubub was about, so they went to see these films with their beaus, and the films became increasingly successful, and in some ways, increasingly shocking - especially with the innuendo and sex-laden names, which (for a while) just got better and better!
    But it was a different time, and what would rightly be seen as sexist or racist stereotyping today was a HUGE opportunity for actresses and people of color back then. Quarrel was only slightly more hip than a superstitious caricature, by today's standards, but back then, the actor John Kitzmiller had lines, got to be involved in some of the physical action, got to show how tough (and crazy) he was when the girl scratched him with the broken bulb, etc. And although the women are little more than toys for Bond in the early films, again, for those actresses, they got to play femme fatales - BAD girls in some cases - roles with something to chew on, and many remained loyal and loving towards the franchise for years because of it, but today, these older Bond films are considered sexist and/or racist, and comparatively, they are, even though behind the scenes, it was pretty groundbreaking in a lot of ways, strangely open-minded and inclusive, even if still using the popular stereotypes of the time.
    Anyway, buy the Blu rays, watch the behind-the-scenes, they're every bit as interesting as the movies themselves, imo. Great to see how they work on the target audience now though; good food for thought, lol. Can't wait to see whatever's next!

    Yea when I watched Dr No for the first time a few years ago, I had the same feeling. I thought it was pretty tame and I thought the villain was easily dispatched and it lacked urgency and the movie felt short in its resolution. I think our issue is that we have seen so many movies, esp. Bond movies that have took the threats to another level every time that we could not help but being underwhelmed cause this was the first try at the plate so to speak. It was the first of his kind. And those who saw it probably thought it was mindblowing. I think really my favorite parts of the movie was seeing younger Connery in his prime being witty and charming while doing his job as a killer/spy. The hotel room scenes were the best in my opinion.

    From Russia with Love DEFINITELY will deliver the "feel of urgency" Sean is looking for. Constant sense of danger, though the plot described as a bit too over the place for some. Many things thrown in. I had no problems with it, but I guess I've got to admit it needs attention span. Also one of the toughest villains for Bond in entire franchise by far.

But other than that, in chronological order: Goldfinger, Moonraker, A View to a kill, Licence to kill, Tomorrow never dies, Casino Royal and Skyfall.

    i think the appeal of DR NO is more about the film's unique style and atmosphere, as well as the charismatic quality Connery gave to Bond - and not so much the story or action - if any other actor had played Bond, it may have very well been the case that we would have never had another 007 film (by the way, i think Dr No is an excellent villain - one of the best, imho - because he is played in such a low key way, with such a stone face expression - but this robotic realization only makes him all the more the frightening and convincing as a heartless psychopath criminal genius)

    The earlier film was a TV adaptation of Casino Royale on CBS' Climax! starring Barry Nelson as an American James Bond aided by a British Felix Leiter. The spoof version of Casino Royale was in 1967 after Albert R. Broccoli didn't show interest in the producers' offer of the title and they were unable to secure Connery for a non-Eon film (he was leaving the role after 1967's Eon 007 film You Only Live Twice though he would return in 1971 for Diamonds Are Forever and then in the non-Eon film Never Say Never Again in 1983). Without Connery or Broccoli, they made a comedic version instead.

    Ian Fleming's novels actually weren't that outdated. Bond is supposed to be slightly brutish, lecherous, and off-putting beneath the suave exterior. He is a pulp character in the vein of Solomon Kane or Conan the Barbarian, after all. It's the business of pulp fiction to deal with gritty and seedy subject matter. The movies mostly just glossed over that side of him until the 80's, with the Timothy Dalton entries.

    I think Dr. No is the most important classic James Bond, because it created the most important features of the franchise: that the villain is like from a sci-fi, the womanizing, the convoluted plans, etc. The later films might have done it better, but this is what makes it or breaks it. If someone doesn't enjoy these clichés, they won't enjoy the James Bond movies until maybe Casino Royale when they actually put effort into making a James Bond movie that would work even without the name James Bond, as a normal action-thriller.

    It's unfair to to compare this to "Casablanca". This was just an adaptation on a popular thriller. No one could anticipate that it would spawn an industry and be considered a classic. The villain's lair did set the style for the later movies, and the plots improved with "Goldfinger" and "Thunderball". I had the advantage of having read all the books when I was a kid, so I loved all the movies going in. In fact, I started disliking the Roger Moore movies a lot, since I grew up with Sean Connery's definition of the character, since he resembled the book Bond more than any subsequent actor. Having said that, the Daniel Craig/Judy Dench combo is genius. But I would watch Daniel Craig read from the phone book if he were sweaty and showing some skin.
