Every so often, a Bond movie will have one of those "Wow" moments. For me, as a little kid, it was the Paratrooper Frogmen. Scuba tanks were still a new thing, and this was really cool stuff. The theatre poster had a wonderful painting of the underwater battle.

Connery was terrified of the sharks. He had to touch the glass to make sure it was there. You can see his eyes popping out as one swims by. They were a panel short and did not tell Connery hoping the shark would miss the gap. It did not. Ken Adam says Connery walked on water to get out of the pool. The underwater filming was done at the Ivan Tors studio in the U.S. where Flipper, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and other 60,s T.V. shows were filmed

So glad you guys enjoyed this. Some people find the underwater scenes too long and drawn out, but I think the underwater battle in particular is just awesome. And for the time it was absolutely revolutionary.
I think one of the downsides of this film is the structure, since we almost always know more about the plot than Bond does and are waiting for him to catch up. Fiona Volpe is one of the absolute best female henchwomen in the series. So sexy, so deadly.
One of my favorite scenes in this is when Bond tells Domino about her brother. Not only do I think Claudine Auger's acting is super good, it's one of the very few scenes where Connery's Bond shows some emotional consideration or almost vulnerability.

Agree with the assessment of this film, this was a very strong bond movie. We got to see the lethargic clueless government (a trope now often copied), the strong male and female baddie, bond was straight and vicious as needed. Wrt to the lady in this, she was effectively in a loveless relationship and in comes this dashing bond character who took her dancing, showed her attention, etc. Agree, Connery was much more a spy here, as much as 'M' scorned him for being late and for messing around with money penny, he knew he would solve this situation, "If 007 says there is something going on there there is" can't remember the exact quote. Many later bond movies borrow from this more than goldfinger which is perhaps why it is remembered as being less distinct/original ie more similar in structure to later movies, which is perhaps why goldfinger is held up higher but I personally think this was stronger

You are so right. THUNDERBALL is the epitome of the James Bond movies. And the peak of Sean Connery as James Bond.
In Dr No, Connery is experimenting how to be James Bond and is a little stiff. In FRWL he explores more the "dark" side of the character. In Goldfinger he adds more witticism and completes the formula. But In Thunderball he finally IS James Bond and perfects the formula. Connery's performance is unique. He seems more self confident than ever. His style, his movement, his lines, even his looks, everything that was in built up to the previous 3 films, came to absolute perfection. He is dark and gritty but also suave and charming. He is tough and ruthless and at the same time witty (with some of the best one-liners in the franchise) and with unreachable style. And it is obvious that he enjoys playing the character more than ever, before or afterwards.
Also this movie travels you. It is the absolute escapism movie. Beautifull exotic places, wonderful settings, incomparable style, extraordinary women. (Fiona Volpe is unbelievable and Domino one of the hottest). It is even considered a fashion icon movie! The plot is simple but believable because for the first time the movie focuses on Bond and not the vilains. The action scenes are superb. The gadjets are believable (the jet-pack was real). And the underwater battle scene is a revolutionary and unique piece of cinematography, especially for that period!
So, especially with Thunderball Connery touches the thin line of perfection by beeing at the same time tough and elegant, witty and ruthless, a real killer with a sense of humor, who lives at the edge of death, so he is enjoying every moment of his life as his last. Goldfinger at 80% and Thunderball at 100%, epitomized the character of James Bond.
For me THUNDERBALL is the best Bond film of all time. Second comes FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE which is one of the most iconic and thrilling espionage - spy movies of all time (beyond the Bond franchise) and the fight with Grant on the train which is one of the most classic scenes in the history of cinema.

Funny story about the shark tunnel scene, during the "making of" documentary, I think it was the production designer who talked about how he made a plexiglass corridor to separate Connery from the shark, but there wasn't enough plexiglass, so there was a gap of about 4 feet. One of the sharks wound up going through the gap when Connery was supposed to be swimming down the tunnel, so his scared expression when the shark's coming at him isn't acting.

Another great link between the early films is Peter Hunt who edited the first five films, including being 2nd unit director on You Only Live Twice. OHMSS is so strange. It has truly been through a roller coaster ride of different viewer takeaways and opinions; having gone from being one of the most derided and ignored of the Bond films, to a simply beloved series highlight, cinematically, professionally, and via cult fan status perspectives. I’m happy to see that, as while I certainly wasn’t around when it was released, I always felt it was much better than it was originally given credit for, so to have seen such positive retrospective reviews and opinions surface over the past 15 years or so is wonderful, as it’s a hidden gem of a Bond film 🙂

By all accounts the shoot went nuts on this when everyone was in the Bahamas. Everyone was having way too much fun swimming and partying and they ended up with a massively overlong movie. Peter Hunt had to chop out a bunch of stuff to get the running time under two and a half hours, the most obvious casualty being Paula (the lovely Martine Beswick) who is only in the movie to be killed off screen now. Hunt actually asked for the release date to be delayed for three months so he could do the job properly and got his wish - that rarely happens.
There was legal shenanigans around this story for many years because Ian Fleming originally came up with the plot while working with a producer called Kevin McClory on a Bond film project that predated this series that ultimately never happened. Fleming wrote the book without necessarily having the sole rights to the story and this became a problem when Broccoli and Saltzman made this movie. A deal was made allowing McClory to have an on-screen title as co-producer and he also retained the remake rights, which nobody thought would be a problem until “Never Say Never Again” happened twenty years later during a memorable summer that turned into a battle of Bond films. McClory kept threatening to remake it again, and possibly queer the pitch for the official series, until he died and the Broccolis (and MGM/UA) got the rights back. It was a similar kind of deal to “Casino Royale” where someone else owned the film rights to the story and it took decades of wrangling for the ‘official’ series to get them back, which they did for the first Daniel Craig film.
John Barry had his first idea for a title song rejected - maybe the first time that happened to him. He assumed nobody would ask him to write lyrics around “Thunderball” (which he found rather gigglesome as a title even before Austin Powers) so he wrote a song called “Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” and had Dionne Warwick sing it. The tune is all over the score in the existing movie and you can probably find Dionne’s performance online. However, the producers wanted the movie title in the song, fair enough, so Barry took some of his material from elsewhere in the score and whipped out the title song you hear in the film.
This movie did crazy, massively well when it came out. Buckets of cash everywhere. However they calculate these things, Wikipedia says “Thunderball” is the most financially successful Bond film after “Skyfall.” It’s weird that its profile is rather low, I always liked this one. All the underwater stuff seems to put some people off but I always dug it, and seriously appreciate what an ordeal it must have been to capture it all on film.

It's funny that after all the troubles, it came off as well and the theme sound by the great Tom Jones is so epic. It's true that the movie is so successful yet unknown at the same time. I wonder why that is. I think the underwater stuff is one of the best stuff that's ever been in a Bond movie action-wise. I understand it may annoy some but even my friend who is not into action flicks love these scenes.

I had seen a lot of pieces of James Bond movies over the years but this is one I had not seen either. I watched it for the first time when I bought the James Bond set in the early 2000s. And when I saw Thunderball, I was speechless. To me it felt like the James Bond concept fully realised finally. A hard edge spy thriller. Spectre really felt like a threat here. And what they did with the face changing was a clever idea that a evil organization would do while somewhat realistic. (Not to mention even my friend who's not into action movies was in awe of the underwater action). And yea I liked the female character here, very interesting arc. This movie has a dark soul and I love it. Even Bond in it is less smiling, more "all business" so to speak. Sean Connery said it was his favorite Bond movie and his favorite acting as Bond. And with inflation it still remains the biggest box office take of any Bond movies(although some of the Craig ones may have overtaken that) so we are not alone in liking this movie, my friends.

Thunderball is absolutely my favorite Bond film. They finally got the formula perfect in a way they never will again. Bond actually does some investigation, Domino is a real person, and you've got to give it up for the first real shark tank scene. It was great, and the producers know it, because around half of the rest of the Bond series is just rehashing Thunderball in one way or another. Younger fans complain about it because it's too slow for them, but the steady build of the film is magnificent.

I'm sure there are a lot more but my 2 favorite are actors turning up in Thunderball and You Only Live Twice. William Sylvester who played Dr. Heywood Floyd turns up in a blink and you miss it cameo as a Pentagon Official and Phillip Stone who so creepily played Grady the ghostly waiter who has the encounter with Jack Nicholson in The Shining also plays Spectre # 5 in the early scene where Largo and the rest of the Spetre agents are giving their reports to Blofeld.

Thunderball is cool, but it suffers from being an action movie without breaking much ground in character. Action by itself is a quick hit that loses its power the moment another action movie does it bigger or slicker, and what we're left with as the legacy of Thunderball is a solid Bond film with a lot of sequences that are fun while they last but without much echo. Whereas Goldfinger is a machine-gun of (often inexplicably) iconic moments and memorable characters. Thunderball is slick, but lacks magic.

Also, the spectre of nuclear war was very relevant and urgent, during the 1960's, so that made the stakes quite high. I thought Largo was a darker villain than Goldfinder, a bit more quirky. Nice payoff with Domino killing Largo. Good for her!

There was development to make an original Bond with film, this was with Kevin McClory who made story contributions, when it fell apart Ian Flemming rework it as a book but was sued, that's why Kevin obtained a producer involvement and rights to certain elements such as the Thunderball story, villain Blofeld and organization Spectre. Certain rights owner ship are some of these are not utilised in Bond films after Diamonds are forever, with a vague non official reference to Blofeld in For Your Eyes Only. Its why Kevin was able to make another adaptation of Thunderball titled Never say Never Again with Sean Connery. The rights were eventually sorted out and it lead to 2015's Spectre.

Wonder if you'll think of Thunderball as kindly on a second viewing. As you've likely heard, it was extremely popular at the time, but much less so later, such that it's often one of the (relatively) forgotten Bonds. Seconded - extraordinary movie. “The Offense” was the result of Connery demanding a huge pile of cash and a movie deal for appearing in “Diamonds Are Forever.” His first idea was a film version of “Macbeth” with himself starring and directing but Polanski got his going first. “The Offence” was the only movie he got made under this arrangement because nobody went and saw it in cinemas. It’s often quite revealing what people do with power when they’re lucky enough to acquire it and Sean Connery made a movie like “The Offense.” My only difficulty putting it on the top of his CV is that he also made “The Hill” which probably ranks a bit higher for me.

(The huge pile of “Diamonds” cash went into a charity Connery founded to help Scottish youth. Another significant indicator of what a guy like Sean Connery did with power and money when he had it.)

You liked the "skyhook" extraction at the end, but it wasn't just used in fantasy films.
It's a real thing called the "Fulton Recovery System" that was used by the CIA, US Navy and Air Force.

When the boat exploded at the end, the pyrotechnics crew put too much explosive in the boat shell. The blast was much bigger than intended and blew out windows in the nearby inhabited island.

This film is based interestingly, on reality: an Italian underwater expert and his men who operated out of a semi-sunken freighter near to Gibraltar, they had an underwater hatch leading to a dock within the ship where they maintained and operated (chariots) the earliest man-carrying torpedoes, to deliver explosives that sank a number of ships in Gibraltar harbour; they were successful in sinking at least one battleship of the Royal Navy for little outlay.
The ship settled on the bottom upright in shallow water, and was maintained as a headquarters ship to disguise what had happened.
It was a triumph of military skill, and shows what could be done by Italian forces operating without constant, deadening, political oversight.
Those men that survived were still around: the Royal Navy had copied their methods and equipment (as early as 1944 and used them against Japanese ships in the far east), and Ian Fleming was writing James Bond books about them by the mid-1960s.

Up until Skyfall, Thunderball was the most financially successful Bond film when adjusted for inflation. Luciana Paluzzi who plays Fiona Volpe is one of my favourite Bond Girls, a stunning actress who pops up in a few classic Italian films of the 50's to the 70's.

  • @JRoth1970
    @JRoth1970 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks for this video! I really enjoyed it!
Thunderball was the first epic of the Bond's - in case of lenght (nearly 130 Minutes), the first Bond with Panavisions scope format and maybe (not sure) the first Bond in Stereo (6 Channel Magnetics?).
Terence Young did a great directing, Peter Hunt's edit was fabelous and John Barry's score was epic too (he called it in later interviews difficult to find the right music for the underwater scenes because of tempo of the music).
Sean Connery was great and you belive he is Bond. I think some minutes shorter would fit the movie better, but I like it. It was a great film for big screens with Special Effects by John Stears that got him an Oscar (the second for a Bond movie - Goldfinger getting one for the sound-editing).
The big explosion on the end (they really blow out a ship) was so intense, that in some kilometers distance glas windows broke down.
If I have to rate all the Connery Bond's I would like to say that it is on the fourth place. From Russia with love is my favourite of his Bonds. You only live twice on the second (it was my first ever Bond film in 1984...on a Video2000-Tape - good god I am really old! ;-) ), Goldfinger has to be the third because it was a milestone for the series.
Again: I enjoyed this videos as your others. Thank you!

In the Connery Cannon, I'm split between FRWL and TB- both directed by Terence Young, as you noted.
FRWL is a tight little (but glamourized) spy story with the drama quite personal (train fight, anyone?). The 'macguffin' of the 'Lektor' gives the plot the impetus, but the real story is the unavoidable trap that has been set for Bond. I always believed that Alfred Hitchcock could have directed this.
TB is a full-on "Bond" movie with all the trappings that became tropes. However, the director, Terence Young, again keeps the the human drama personal so the viewer can be invested in what happens to the characters and not be overwhelmed by the relentless pace of the film.
I enjoyed your reactions and comments. Thank you!

Always felt bad for this Bond film cause it came out after Goldfinger meaning it had a lot to live up to. Never thought it was as much fun as Goldfinger. Also, this film started the legal battles between writers Kevin Mclory and Ian Fleming over who owned the rights to this film’s story. He fought for his rights in court until his death in 2006.

I have a special relationship with Bond. Saw my 1st Bond Live and Let Die with my Dad when I was 6. It was my 1st adult movie and I loved it . Didn't realize to much later it was a Bond blaxploitation flick. ABC in the States would play the Bond movies every year and I have fond memories of watching them all and getting to stay up past my bedtime to watch them. Thunderball and You Only Live Twice are my 2 favorite Connery Bond movies. You guys will love the next one. It has maybe the most non pc scenes in the history of Bond so get ready and if you think Thunderball sounds like an Austin Powers title you'll love what Blofeld looks like. Try to get some of the one liners in your clips You guys cut out several hilarious ones when Bond is dancing with the femme fatale Fiona and she's shot by her own hitman he places her at a table and says " she's dead tired " and when he shoots Largo's hitman at the beach "I think he gets the point". Really wanted to see your reaction to Bond punching A "woman" who is the Spectre agent pretending to be his widow. Thunderball had one of the most underrated themes sung by Tom Jones and the best collection of women from the agent who worked with Bond, the spa tech, Fiona and Domino. Keep up the good work gents and look forward to more Bond content.

Talking about "bigger is better"... Yeah, first 3 Bond movies are maybe too small and old-fashioned? A little outdated? I think so, but nevertheless they are good movies! *** Now, get ready for the next movie: YOLT(1967)!!! I think this is the first very-very modern big budget Bond movie with awesome sets and cinematography! Made way back in 1966/67, but looks as good as it would have done in 2021... Can't wait for your next analysis!
