hell yeah man, this is the single best advice for songwriting, I started to do this a few years ago and it's a gamechanger inspiration vise and also the music ends up much more interesting. in a sense, it's like jamming with someone else, my guess is that's why it works so well.

I just made a new metal writing/recording template on cubase spent all day on it and one thing I added because I’m also always thinking of different ways to write songs…I added a vocal track..dry nothing on it and I use it to scat guitar riffs and drum parts I might hear you should try that if you never have
I think what you are saying is basically that you need inspiration to trigger ideas. Some people can sit with a blank paper and conjure up things and just write while others need something to happen to... *dun dun*.. Riff upon!!
