- We ride along with Matt, the owner of 'Melba Toast': a 750hp, 1970 Chevelle that combines that classic muscle car vibe with a truly modern twist, packing a Texas Speed 454 LSX, full SPEC chassis, Evod wheels, Baer Brakes, Dakota Digital Gauges and a full Avant Garde Design Interior.
On the 400 mile drive out to Columbus Goodguys, Matt talks why he picked this car to build with us and what he loves about it!

Love it! I'm in the process of making my 70 chevelle a summer, fall, and spring daily driver. Restomod and I dont care about the MPG it pays for it in smiles.

I have put 10k miles on my 65 El Camino in less than a year. It has the OG drive train in it and I have done 500 mile trips in 1 day with no problem. The modern drive trains are really nice but you can still do it with all the old school stuff. I dig the 70 Man its B I T C H I N !

What a great 70 Chevelle, you have done your car the right way, doing the break in and troubleshooting the car first.. that is the sign of a reliable really nice show/driver car. The trip looked like an amazing time based on the grin and the cars that accompanied you, really nice car! Best of luck with it, I am trying get an idea of what type of cost it was for your build, I know it’s personal was it it your original car you supplied or they got it for you but I’m figuring the car is approximately $125-150k total to complete, either way best of luck with it...enjoy the miles !

Bitching ride! I’m working on one rite now...I’m looking for an instrument cluster that looks original but will work with the LS conversation that I did. Mine is silver with black rally stripes...Love this wheels you installed. They give it that original look but if you know cars. You know that they are a new version of the originals.
I am installing the LSX 454 retro style in my 70 as well. Any idea where he purchased the valve covers and air cleaner? Thanks 🙏

Finally a wheel setup I want to put on my Chevelle. What's the spec's on the wheels and tires, also who makes the tires and wheels? That's one sweet ride u got, mines a 71 but I'm gonna convert mine to a 70 also.

Was Suspension done to if so Does it ride like a modern car??
All of our chassis come with upgraded suspension geometry so using stock components is not an option. We engineer and tune dampers for our chassis to provide the most performance and comfort we can for each car. So, yes, it will ride like a modern sports car. Check out the other videos we've recently loaded with the '68 Mustang and the El Camino. Those will give you a good idea of how sporty the cars are.

I love when guys spend 50-100 grand making a pro touring car and talk about gas mileage of originals. Come on, if you can afford to spend insane money on a build then you can drive and fill up a classic.

Agreed. I'm gen X. We just fixed up a car and lived driving it. Not saying it's not nice but it saddens me to see my hobby get to this place where average folks who dream of their favorite cars can't afford them cause they cost as much as a house. I'm all 4 the Lemans to GTO badge swaps to make a cheaper car look the part. My uncle bought his for 10k in 1995. We thought that was a lot for a true SS Chevelle. Now that's a shifter and a few pieces of interior. We'd buy 3rd gen F body cars, rip out 6cyl, or weak 305, swap in a carb 350, 327 with a thumper cam, headers, 4 bolt mains, and a 5 speed and just think we had it all. No 10k paint jobs, 30k engines etc. I love this hobby. I always will but hope the new gen can get into this hobby too, not watch only cause cars can't be afforded.

In 1970 I was smart enough to buy a 70 SS LS6 Chevelle black white stripes pearl white bucket seat interior the car has 12,000 original miles so far
