I for one miss 2D hand-drawn animation, especially the animation done by legendary Don Bluth. 2D is the true magic of creation and always will be.

I certainly see 2D animation as the purest art (along with theatre). Even cave drawings were 2D drawings, animation just made it move and have sound. 2D can never go away, time has shown that.

Wow! In my opinion, animation back then will always have a little more for me. Maybe its because of the amount of work thats put into it.
I love both art styles of animation, but the nostalgia of earlier animation will always have my heart.

Damn, I've always been curious about this. Really appreciate the amount of work into researching and editing this, dude!

3D has a lower skill entry level (and in some ways, a lower ceiling, too), and you can cut out the inbetweeners entirely. It's a pragmatic business move, especially as tech improves. It's lazy, especially as assets get reused more and more, but it makes sense to the beancounters, so CEOs run with it. Yes, the market diffused away from Disney, which is overall a positive... but the industry *on the whole* suffers from the artistic laziness that 3D allows. The Spiderverse movies have pushed back on that, which is nice, but time will tell how that sorts out. ...this, for what it's worth, coming from a guy with a 3D animation degree who would have loved to work with Walt's Nine Old Men.

Disney saw profit in 3D animation and gave 2D animation the finger along with everyone else.

For sure, in the end of the day it's profit. Simple as that. 3D animation just meant somebody other than Disney can share some of the pie too.

Excellent research. I must admit, I dislike 3D animation, there's far less expression - it's impersonal like a continental sandwich not terrible but bland and as grey as it gets.
I get some smaller hobbyists doing it due to budget constraints but to me animation as a whole suffered as they went to 3D. I think this helped propel Japanese anime further precisely because of this, passion, action, reactions, scenery can all be given q personal touch even if its a blend between 2D, vector graphics and 3D that 3D alone just doesn't have.

It’s an outdated and obsolete form of art. Period.

Outdated and obsolete yes, but it was better.

@@derekc180 saying that 2D animation is better than 3D animation is like saying that Horse Carriages are better than Cars, both serve their purpose well but cars can go way faster. Meanwhile, traditional animation can be pretty it’s own way but it requires a bunch of people working on still images for years. Computer animation is both more realistic and easier for the animators since much of the process is automated.

@@m3tamorphosissystem250 No, it’s like saying that hand painted renaissance portraits are better than photos. Hand drawn animation is more aesthetically pleasing, beautiful, and expressive. Photos are cheap and easy but lack genuine artistic expression. You are correct in the sense that CG is faster easier and cheaper, so if you’re just trying to make money then yes it’s better. Also, movies today just aren’t as good, these film companies especially Disney have lost the ability to write good stories. They can’t capture the animation anymore. We are definitely in the Disney dark age.

@@derekc180 ok, i get your point about the renaissance paintings. That was a good comparison, but “in the Disney dark age” definitely not. Encanto and Raya were both masterpieces and Moana and Frozen each made over a billion dollars. Also, what about Tangled and Wreak-It-Ralph and Big Hero 6 and Zootopia, and everything ever made by Pixar?
