It happened to me two times. Sixty students in a class I just left those schools. It's not easy to teach more than 15 students in each class.

I've been teaching English in Nanjing for 4 and a half months now (can't believe it's been that long!) and the kids are soo cute, they're grade 1
Thank you so much! I wish I had found this before I left! I have been here about two weeks, and it has been chaos so far. I am primarily teaching in Jinan and doing something or another in smaller cities around here :) I have zero experience and know zero Chinese! I never planned on coming, but then my brother-in-law was contacted by a company starting a program here and asked for some help! You were very encouraging. I am so grateful!
I'm headed to Huizhou China in August with my gf and I'm soooooooo nervous and excited. Im going to continue watching your videos, thank you for this!
Adam Mars hello, I'm a HR of Royal International School in China, feel free to ask any questions if you interested in teaching in our company, we provide up to 22000 Yuan salary per month plus free food and free accommodation and other benefits. My wechat: ja199112
Wow, it's so cute how enthusiastic you are when speaking about the kids. We can just feel the uniqueness of the experience and how attached you got to these kids. You definitely sound like a genuinely nice person, and the kids were incredibly lucky to have you as a teacher. Thanks a million for the tips and the websites you so generously shared with us. =))
Enjoyed listening to your teaching experience in China. Your volunteer work proves that you truly love the Chinese people. Keep-up the good work.
Thank you :)
I just found your videos yesterday and have been practically devouring them since then. In a couple of months I'll be teaching English in Chengdu

Hannah Hendry hey..how ur teaching going on in Hangzhou or u left?

Hello! I am leaving in August to teach English for EF! I am going to be in Wuhan. I loved your video, definitely the most upbeat and positive video that I have seen. I want to get a real sense of what it's like without a filter, and I just feel a great relief of pressure from your experience. Thank you so much!

Life saver! I leave in February to teach in China. Definitely using your packing list!
How is it going?
I know I'm quite a late comer on this video but I just recently started watching your videos. I am going to China within the month to live and teach english for a year in the city of Zibo. I am so greatful for the resources you have given here. Thank you for sharing about your experiences as I am finding that they are helping me to feel more prepared as I love forward.
Lauren! I absolutely love your videos. I'm teaching kindergarten in China (Sichuan, Chengdu) for the first time, thanks for your help!
This video is informative, thanks a lot. I came across it since I was looking for others who's teaching abroad, especially in China. I'm currently living in China and have been teaching here for 9 years. I'm always open for learning new teaching methods.
8:05 That'ts exactly it! You gotta be on your feet and ready act anytime if you are going to China. Many expectations are just unspoken, you are expected to know intuitively or get the hint from conversations. Trust me I'm from China.
i was contemplating whether i wanted to go teach abroad but this video really helped and gave me a lot of perspective. Looking forward to the rest of your content
She gets into the 5 tips at 4:50
So glad I stumbled upon your video! And now I have more videos of yours to watch! I will hopefully be going to China to teach English in about 5-8 weeks, the links will be so helpful! Thank you!
Thank you for this video. You have a very beautiful and sparkling personality. The kids were very lucky to have a teacher like you.

Hi Juliette,
That's one hell of a coincidence, I received an unsolicited email from English First's recruiting team for a job in Hangzhou today (he saw my CV on Tefl.com).
Would you mind letting me know how you are finding the job (and, dare I be cheeky, and ask about salary/accommodation)?
How's that company so far? I heard bad things about it
Hi juliette, I am also taking few more atepa to go to EF in China. Hows the school?
Hello! I have a job in Hangzhou as well. Can you tell me anything? I am especially excited that you're black. I have been wondering how darker skin people are treated because i have heard a number of bad stories.
I move to Nanjing in August to teach English! This got me even more excited.

Hi there ! I'm leaving in a couple months to teach English in Hangzhou & I'll definitely be taking advantage of your advice.
Are you still in Hangzhou and in teaching!
I've been to China twice before for non-teaching-related work in 2000 and 2007, and right now am prepping to go teach in Shanghai in February of 2019...I've been gorging myself on videos like yours to help me get ready...My first two trips to Shenzhen and Suzhou were sprung on me basically overnight (first time I was at a work meeting on a Thursday after lunch, was literally told I'd be on a plane to China for a 2-month trip the next day at dinnertime- believe me, getting shots, driving 2 hours both ways to get a Visa, packing with only 24 hours to do so is insane!!)...This time I have 4 months to pass TEFL and get all the paperwork done, put my life in order ...
You are pretty, nice, patient and very approachable. You can be a very good teacher.
Thanks!
Yeah, she's the type schools will bend over backwards for if they know what they've got in such a nice, outgoing person.
I'm so glad I found your channel! I am moving to Sanming in 2 months. I will definitely check out more videos.

Thanks this was really helpful, I leave for Beijing in August. Your packing guide is great!

I'm going to Nanjing! I taught in Wuxi in 2017 in a training centre, but this time it's a public foreign language school. It's been years since I taught classes that will be over a dozen students so I'm more than a little anxious.
Thank you for these resources. I just applied to teach English in Korea and I'm curious about hearing others experiences. Thank you for this and the links.

Thank you so much for your tips and kind suggestions! Just started teaching in Nanjing, hopefully it will be a success 🙈
Thank you SO MUCH for this girl!!! Especially the resources
Hi Lauren! I have literally seen every video you’ve posted so far, and cannot wait for your next ones. I am moving to China in February. I stay in South Africa and is moving to Guangzhou in Guangdong area. I have never been to China so I am preparing myself for a massive culture shock (honestly through watching your videos haha). I am super excited but also super nervous about the whole adventure.

Dear Lauren, thank you for such a knowledgable video. It's very useful. I am getting ready to teach English in China and will stay there for a year. I took some notes from ur video. Now I know that it may noy\t be that well structured and instructors need to prepare for the lessons on their own. I will look through your resources! Kind regards!

Awww so cute! Your students and you =) thank you for the ESL resources and sharing your experiences!
You are so welcome!! :)
Fantastic experience.

Any tips please!

Thank you so much! This was extremely helpful, I speak Chinese but am bad with kids, and this took so much stress off of me!
I'm so glad!! Best of luck to you :)
So is it okay if I can't speak in mandarine at all? How to get a job there ? Where to apply?
Hello,am from Africa I only speak English,I just move to China in dongguan and am planning to teaching some kids English, what do you think I should do,
Do you have to know Chinese in harder to teach them? I am thinking about this but i would need to get certified. Is this tough if you dont have experience?
I'm leaving for Xiangtan, China in a couple days to teach English. I'm super excited, and also terrified but I think I'll be ok.
hi Lauren
thank you for this video , it is interesting. i am now in china changsha city just finding a teaching job .
May i help you?
Damn, after 11 years in china, I can relate to a lot of that. Being invited to a tiny province in the middle of Anhui to talk to some kids, and ended up in a conventional centre with two thousand local government officials teaching them the differences between English money and Chinese money. Madness. But the local TV crew took me out for baijou, was amazing.
I have a choice:to go to Changsha,Hunan province,Wuhan or Jiaxing?,I don' t know where is better,which one to choose
Ahhh I don't know! Best of luck with the selection process! Once you decide be sure to check out my China Travel Guide in my channel playlists and let me know where you end up!

Very good. Fantastic
Im 15, and I can speak fluent mandarin and english. This year im going to china to visit, and i want to tutor some kids - any advice?
Thank you for your refreshing, positive attitude toward our profession.
Great video! I've been here for 10 years and still get random new things happening everyday that you would never see back home. Keeps life interesting!! haha
Are you in china now Andy?
Very interesting content. I'm seriously thinking of doing this and already applied to a couple of places. I had a brief phone interview last night and will have a second Skype interview tomorrow. I'm trying to prep so I ask the right questions and your little videos helped a lot. I'm even more excited now to move forward with this and I am open to staying longer than a year if all goes well. Thanks again.
Thank you so much for your video! I was a Tesol student, now I am teaching in Shanghai~
Great. I m gonna teach chinese kids. But would like to ask , is it difficut if u have never did that before?
Im looking at going to teach English in Beijing.
I would advise you to check OTHER CITIES- Beijing 'sounds' nice but it's awful. Not only the amount of people and traffic- but the smog is hazardous.
I’m going in April
Do you suggest any other City, that is nice, I mean the salary must be on same level as Beijing.

I'm going for a demonstration class today at Xi an. Any advice?
Hi, great video. I have taught English in Dalian China for about 17 years. It's been a great experience. When I first arrived in China I really enjoyed feeling like a celebrity. I didn't know one word of Chinese until I felt bored out of my mind. I started with numbers. Because in China the numbers are used in many words. Well got to run! I've have class to get to, bye. zai jian
Hey Lauren, I'm going to Chengdu in July this year and was wondering if you know anything about healthcare in China or how the hospitals are over there?
I'm going to teach chemistry, biology and physics at JINAN university in Hangzhou this summer ! I'm excited and nervous at the same time !
WHOA, get it!!! Those are some hefty topics! You're going to rock it!!
Sora Mosa hangzhou is a beautiful city! worth it.
Hi Lauren. Thanks for sharing your 5 tips. Did you ever have any major problems with employers during your time in China? Is there anything about financial concerns that teachers should be aware of?
I only ever volunteered, I was on an S1 Visa so I was never employed by anyone. Sorry!
I personally recommend living in South China not only for the weather but also its proximity to Hong Kong ... just my two cents after nearly a decade here.
Great advice! I will be living and working in Guangzhou.
What kind of degrees do you need to go teach in china
My father encourage me to do so but I'm still not having my license degree so I'm really worried
Technically you need any bachelors degree and a TEFL I believe, but there are people who do it without a bachelors, not sure if that’s illegal or if it’s because they have experience and a TEFL. TEFL certificate is very easy to get, but if you get a cheap quick one you won’t have any actual training.
But being from a native English speaking country is important, but not always required.
So which do you work more on TH-cam or your blog? Which is easier to work on while traveling.
Thank you for this wonderful video and those important tips. I am moving to Shanghai to teach English. Wish ne good luck hehe!
How is it going there?
Are you in china now?
Thanks!
That 'putting you on the spot' tactic in order to use you is very common in China
I'm a new subscriber! :) I'll be moving to Chongqing next month and this video was super informative, thank you!
Welcome!!! Sorry it took me so long to respond! Life got super crazy but videos are about to become frequent again :) Best of luck on your way to Chongqing! If you want more advice, check out my China Travel Guide playlist
I really like to go there, the thing is I am not sure if there is a mealimeal because I cannot live without uphuthu!!!
that was great thanks .im a first time teacher start in 2 days in language school fuzhou.....feeling nervous
I'm going to teach in Shenzhen in a few weeks to teach Kindergarteners- at first the placement seemed highly structured but now it seems I know nothing about it and there are no other foreign teachers.... any advice? This is my first teaching job after doing an online TEFL course....
Lauren that's great! Did you get a VPN before you went or when you got to China? Can you access this website you listed in China and sign up there and use it for youtube?
My husband got a VPN before and I got one while I was in China. It's certainly easier to get it before, because you have to use special links to get to it which you can get by emailing ExpressVPN :) Hope this helps!
I said that a little strangely... I meant that you have to use special links if you get it while in China because I believe the normal ExpressVPN website is blocked. I would get it before you go to avoid the hassle
I'm going to Harbin and plan on visiting Beijing...what can you tell me? I'm considering teaching english...I'm currently in school as well though.
I mean I suppose I can tell you a lot, but my Beijing vlogs will probably tell you more. Let me know if there's a specific question you want answered.
good topic! very informative. I'm going to shanghai soon to further my studies. Would be possible to get a part time job teaching? What qualifications do you need to teach english in china? sound advice please. thanks
Hi, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I'm honestly not sure about the visa situation. If you'll be a student, I don't think you can legally make any money in China unless a company sponsors you, but I could be wrong. I would check out some part time opportunities or call the campus you'll be studying at and see what's out there. Then you can ask those employers about the visa options for foreign students. Hope that helps a bit. I was on a family visa which is why I volunteered to teach rather than working an actual teaching job.
thanks so much lauren!
hi lauren, thanks for sharing, tell us more about your relationship with the parents
We didn't have a common language so there was usually only one parent I spoke with because he spoke English. They treated me like family :) They were very sweet.
Great video! Thank you so much!
Hey can you tell me where i find the resources you mentioned. Many thanks
Hello Lauren I am in Nanjing. Tomorrow, I have middle school students to teach English Language.
tomorrow i’m going for my first teaching class 😂
I'm thinking about teaching kids in China englisch, but I have social anxiety and I'm scared that I would be a really bad teacher...so do you maybe have any tipps on how to make lessons fun and interesting?
Thanks for the online resources! I start my teacher training in Fuzhou next week. :-O
I have a question about the VPN. My husband and I are going together. Is this something we can share? Is this something that I should let ATT know about? (That I'm going to a foreign country...) Thanks for your tips!!
I think ExpressVPN allows you to have VPN active on 3 devices so as long as you're not both digital nomads or something it should work! I think you can install it on more than that though :) If by ATT you mean your cell service, then yes! You'll need to unlock your phone in order to use a Chinese SIM card.
