Mike,,ive fixed my front steps every 2 years,,,,i always made my mortar a wet mess,,it always failed,,You`ve showed me a little dry seems to work better,so thats what i`m gonna do this go around !!!!!
Mike, I've been watching your videos for years and think you're awesome. I hope to one day meet you in person. Question. The retaining wall you mentioned. It looks solid but I know what you say about retaining walls. Will that hold? Take good care, friend. Brian
Hi Brian, I did the one on the left, someone else did the one on the right, but if they put enough gravel behind it and made it thick enough they should get some time out of it, thanks, Mike
Nice!! I'm looking for the same oldschool look at my home and your videos knock it out the park for me. In the Westmoreland area where would you recommend getting that limestone?? As I'm looking to do a patio in that fashion.
Hey Mike. Do you know how to make polymeric sand? I have extra paver base sand, and need to fill the joints but dont want to spend the 40 bucks for a small bag. Is there any additive I can use to keep it from washing out between the joints? Thanks !
Hi Mike, I have a question. Last summer I restored 2 stone outdoor grills and a stone picnic area at a city park. The picnic area has walls about waist high, is covered by a roof, and also has a stone fireplace/grill. Built in the early '30s I feel pretty sure THE CCC built them. The mortar used though had Type M strength. This summer I have a project that was also built in the 30s, and is near that city park. Limestone was used on both projects. This summers project has 4 stone columns supporting a cement arch. The mortar used on the current restoration is exactly the same as the park mortar.....type m strength, granular looking mortar. No lime in either project. The old local historian says gunite was used on the arch. Never seen mortar like this before. What gives?
Hi Patrick, I can't say, every mason up to the late 90s used their own mix for their area, this type n,m,s, confused everybody, I show what I used in each of my videos for each of my products in pa, that's the best I can do, Mike
@@MikeHaduck I gotcha - so no concern about adhesion or anything like that for this kind of application? I think I remember in one of your flagstone patio videos you wet stones
Hi Patrick, on these outside steps I used ,1 part portland to 2 mason sand, bluestone is hard and the weather would kill mortar, but a soft limestone I might get away with s mortar if repoiting, thanks Mike
Hi Andy, wetting block stone or brick makes a mess, if you want stucco or plaster or something to stick then you wet it first. But not ordinary block or brick, thanks Mike
Hi Cookie, not with brick block and stone work, because it makes a mess, wetting is usually done on everything else like plaster, stucco, and repairs, thanks, Mike
I have a wall that is sunkin. I feel it’s due to an old cistern .i have mostly vanear rock and brick. I think is from wetting and termite infestation.mites are gone.
If there is one lesson I have learned from Mike Haduck, it's that it's not a big deal and I shouldn't make a project out of it. Thanks, Mike!
Me trimming my mustache "don't make a big deal out of it..."
There is a lot of wisdom in those words.
And don't forget to wet it first
Thanks desktorp,, Mike

Great job Mike! No jointing and no sawing and looks great! Was that a one day job?
Hi Philip, yes but another day getting ready and cleanup thanks Mike
How many hours does a job like this take? You made it look easy.
Hi Jim, it was one day but you got tovrun for sand ,cement ,tools and then get rid of the waste, thanks Mike
Nice!! I'm looking for the same oldschool look at my home and your videos knock it out the park for me. In the Westmoreland area where would you recommend getting that limestone?? As I'm looking to do a patio in that fashion.
Hi steelcity, I would check out your local stone yards or near by quarries, thanks Mike
Harrison Ford? is that you?!!! 🤣😂
Hi frank,, he does look like me, thanks Mike
Your a concrete master my friend. Love watching your vids. btw how is florida. ????
Thanks AmericanPatriot, Mike
Awesome job, looks great! How much does a job like this cost to do?
Hi bhepp,, about 40 dollars in cement and sand and the stone was left over from another job, thanks Mike
The only thing I didn’t see was you wetting the stones down before mortaring them in, is it not always needed? Thanks, great video!
Hi wans,, not used in new veneer or stone, mostly patches, stucco, etc thanks Mike
looks good, how's Florida treating you do you miss the north in heat of summer?
Hi ranger, it's Hot but I enjoy it, thanks Mike
It turned out great. Do you miss PA at all?
Hi Das, not yet, still enjoying Florida, thanks Mike
Hey Mike. Do you know how to make polymeric sand? I have extra paver base sand, and need to fill the joints but dont want to spend the 40 bucks for a small bag. Is there any additive I can use to keep it from washing out between the joints? Thanks !
Hi Senor, no, I just buy the bag, trying other stuff could get messy, thanks Mike
Mike
Was the bag of fast drying pre-mixed like an n?
Hi, the fast drying was a concrete fast drying pre mix,, thanks Mike
👍
Thanks John, Mike
Did you shoot this one a few years back, or did you shoot it when you went back to PA for a visit from FL?
Hi David, this was about 9 months ago in Florida, thanks Mike
more videos Mike :)
Thanks, I got them, Mike
Hi Mike, I have a question.
Last summer I restored 2 stone outdoor grills and a stone picnic area at a city park. The picnic area has walls about waist high, is covered by a roof, and also has a stone fireplace/grill. Built in the early '30s I feel pretty sure THE CCC built them.

Never seen mortar like this before.

We'll this particular mortar was way ahead of its time.
90 years old and still hard as heck.
Didn’t feel the need to wet the stones as you laid them with a stiffer mix? No judgement, just curious to understand your process. Love your videos
For the bluestone part of the tread I mean*
Hi Nathan, Not in this case,, it would have made a mess, thanks Mike
@@MikeHaduck I gotcha - so no concern about adhesion or anything like that for this kind of application? I think I remember in one of your flagstone patio videos you wet stones
I’m in Reading PA and it’s helpful seeing content from someone who’s relatively local (relative for the internet at least)
Is the mortar harder than the stone?
Does it matter in this application?
I never have seen you use a saw. Sure wish I had your hammer skills.
Hi Patrick, on these outside steps I used ,1 part portland to 2 mason sand, bluestone is hard and the weather would kill mortar, but a soft limestone I might get away with s mortar if repoiting, thanks Mike
Mike, where have you been?
He moved to Florida
Hi Tweety, florida, but I still am making videos, thanks Mike
This one is not in Florida. Is this a recent job?
Hi yopage, I still have unfinished videos from PA but making them here too, thanks Mike
OMG ! 😮 Mike is the last Man 😳 in America who knows what he's doing everyone else is High on drugs 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thanks erco,, Mike
Mike are you back up north? This doesn't look like Florida
Hi philadelphia,, I still have a lot of videos left from up north, thanks Mike
How come you don't wet the stones (or bricks/blocks) when you're doing stone / brick / block?
Hi Andy, wetting block stone or brick makes a mess, if you want stucco or plaster or something to stick then you wet it first. But not ordinary block or brick, thanks Mike

Hi rainbow,, I have a lot of videos on retaining walls, thay might help, thanks Mike
Mike should be 'knighted'
Thanks Matt, lol, Mike
"NO BIG DEAL" LOL............Why aren't you wearing a dust mask ?
Hi Arthur, I do, Mike
I thought Harrison Ford was going to show us how to repair steps
Thanks Big Joe, Mike
Great informative vid as usual thanks
Thanks hrzy,, Mike
