Probably a tall order but I was hoping one day you would react to the whole Metropolis Pt.2 in one go. Regardless, looking forward to it, this is one of my favourite DT songs.
Agreed! All in one go for this album really adds another emotional dimension when you get really stuck in with the characters (he probably had no idea what the story notes were about during the casino section!😂) ✌🏻🏴
Yep same. A mate showed me the Scenes From New York recording on VHS 20 odd yrs ago and I absolutely couldn't believe what I was seeing. The big smoke sesh we had probably helped too 😂 but ever since, ask any of mates, I've been obsessed with Dream Theater 👌🏿
This is going to sound superweird, but this album also change some sexual preferences for me. You know, to have things left for the imagination, that kind of thing? This album changed me fundamentally. Then I discovered Images and Words, and then Tool and Karnivool, and my entire outlook on everything was just... changed.
The intro is one of the sickest pieces of music ever written, the riffs is just special and out of this world.. And that outro is one of the most complicated yet amazing outros ever !! What a Masterpiece !
The snare is a masterful tune. And the overheads catching all those random little accent cymbals and stacks is worth a kiss for sure. Drum sound is amazing on metropolis 2
DT's best album, as far as I am concerned. This song leads directly into Dance of Eternity, which I believe you have heard. It's the one with 100+ time signature changes. :) If you like this one, you may want to check out an earlier DT album called Awake, especially the tracks The Mirror/Lie
For heavier, more "ballsy" Dream Theater, try any track from Train of Thought or any of a few tracks from Awake. AMEND: I just remembered you did "This Dying Soul" in an extended track session few months ago, that's off Train of Thought. So you do have some experience with DT's heavier side. That said, they've got a lot more tracks from the 2 albums I mentioned, plus other heavy stuff from other albums, to keep fans of their more metal side very happy.
You're gonna be disappointed then if you're expecting them to be anything like they were 25 years ago. They've all changed, and no it wasnt just bc Portnoy left the band, he wasn't the sole factor for why they were great. Idk why people say this kind of stuff, it never makes sense to me
I understand what you mean by staying in the pocket. It's very organic in it's changes. LaBrie on records and LaBrie live are two very different animals. He also have problems with his high notes today a well, which is natural for everyone as we get older. Scenes From a Memory already were in a more comfortable range for him, than Images and Words and Awake. Jordan is their third keyboard player, previous were Kevin Moore and Derek Sherinian.
FYI r lead singer on the VERY 1st DT album was the only one that was different. His name was Charlie Dominici who recently passed away this past year in 2023. All other albums since have had James LaBrue on lead vocals with John Petrucci and/or Mike Portnoy on harmony vocals on select songs
Best album ever made in the history of music. I've shown to a few people that are not even rock fans and they all loved it. Everyone should experience this masterpiece.
I took my stepdaughter to the Masonic in San Francisco for her first concert. She was 18. They played this whole album, and it was magical. She's almost 21 now, and still wears the concert T shirt.
This was one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen. My friends and I bought this album the day it came out and we studied every track before we saw them on tour. Little fact for you, they released a live album called Scenes From New York on September 11th, 2001. That was pulled from shelves the same morning because of the attacks on the US. The reason it was pulled is because the original cover art was was picture of an apple wrapped in barbed wire with the New York skyline (statue of liberty and the twin towers) on fire. It was a complete fluke that the album and the terror attack happened the same morning.
Is it just me or do I hear a Tool song in there? The part round 7:55 reminds me of Forty Six and Two and the riff sounds very much alike just faster here.
Three Keyboard Players - Kevin Moore - 1986 - 1994; Derek Sherinian 1995-1998; Jordan Rudess 1999-current .. the song this album is on is their concept one “Scenes from a memory” was Jordan’s first with the band. He previously played with Mike Portnoy and Joh Petrucci in Liquid Tension Experiment.
First time I heard Home, i said to myself "damn that bass groove is very similar to Tool's 46 & 2". Even though I love this song and the album as a whole, I can't get that comment out of my head. It's like a curse
I know "prog" is a notoriously flexible genra, but to me this has always felt definitely progy (with a healthy dose of metal). Maybe what you are hearing is that this is part of a concept album/rock opera and I feel it definitely has some light musical theater elements to it, especially the vocals.
A lot of their music is actually pretty straightforward. Problem is that people listen to Dance of Eternity and assume all their songs sound like that. They really don't, ofc they are busier than normal rock bands.
Yeah true . I've always stayed away from their insane stuff while introducing them to a friend. Dance of eternity is a musical masterpiece, but very few can truly appreciate it .
This is considered the best DT album. It was great seeing this show live in 2000. And even if The Spirit Carries On or The Dance of Eternity are considered to be the bes tracks, this is my favourite. This is a great track. Thank you to the guy who suggested this one! Awwwright! Still here!
At the end you mention Steven Tyler as an example of a singer who never had issues, but in fact he had surgery in 2006 and more recently had to postpone a bunch of shows because he's injured again. Singing rock and metal is akin to performing an extreme sport and when you do it professionally and go 100% night after night on tours, it's very hard not to get any injuries, unfortunately.
It's amazing to be able to experience this song for the first time again through your reaction Geebz, I gotta admit that for a while I was an enormous Dream Theater fan. I still love them! Mainly because of John Petrucci. One of my all time favourite albums is Images and Words and I have the guitar tablature book for it. Finally Free from this album really took me by surprise. It is a very dramatic and theatrical album. Spirit Carries On is perhaps one of the most beautiful ballads and guitar solos I have ever heard. ( That's just my opinion though) It took me a bit longer to appreciate their other albums. I think I have collected most of them. It's quite addictive when you first discover them. The musicianship and fantastic atmosphere is unlike anything else I've heard. Thank you for the reaction Geebz, I'm really happy you're still doing this :). You are actually one of the few music reaction channels that I find worth watching. You and Charismatic voice are my favourites. In the lyrics they quote " I remember i was told there's a new love, for each one that has died " - That is a direct reference to Metropolis pt 1 on the Images and Words album. I believe that phrase is also referred to in another DT song. I just can't remember which one.
Hi Geebz! Another one to check is a Scandinavian band called Textures , they’re not around anymore but they are unique sounding in terms of prog metal. Pls check one of their songs called singularity or minor Earth/ major skies , its pretty awesome!!
I'm a huge DT fan and to hear you say that this is one of the heavier ones you've heard from them put a bit of a smile on my face. I'm guessing you haven't listened to Train of Thought yet.
You've missed the opportunity to watch the live version of this from Budokan that has a big meaty section of improv stuff. One of my favorite parts of the show for sure.
You need to checkout the "Awake" album. Right from the beginning at "6 o'clock" it's my favorite. This album is a concept complete story. You need a straight through listen of it proper.
being part of a concept album (widely regarded as one of the best prog metal albums of all time) I'd say the vibe of the song and it being mostly not all over the place is very purposeful as there are some other more proggy tracks on the rest of the album
You'd really enjoy the combination of Hell's Kitchen and Lines in the Sand(one flows into the next) by Dream Theater, off of the Falling Into Infinity album.
The cover photo of the album is Mike Portnoy, Drummer and lyricist of this particular album of DT. This was the first appearance of Keyboardist Jordan Rudess... Year - 1999.
Whaaaat! That’s Mike Portnoy on the cover of Metropolis pt.2? I can’t believe I never noticed. Also, what an introduction from Rudess. He’s got to be a top 3 keyboard player worldwide. The guy is an absolute beast!
DT has had 3 keyboard players over the years. The original was Kevin Moore, who is now a doctor. Next was Derek Sherinian, who is my personal fave of the bunch. His keys just have a snarl to them that really went well. Jordan was the next and still current keyman.
Yo Geebz love the video. You need to check out the band Wheel. They are awesome. My personal favorites are Dissipating, Lacking and Movement. Keep em coming
Spot on. This is one of the last albums where the music felt truly personal and more visceral. Also, the singer damaged his voice via food poisoning in '94 or '95 and this album came out in '99 and he had still not fully recovered. He did a remarkable job on this album for not being 100%. But if you go back and listen to the '94 album Awake, particularly the track "voices", you'll hear what this guy was capable of pre-injury. Spoiler alert: any and everything
Home is probably their best song. The album it's on is probably their best album. The song the entire album is based on thematically, is absolutely their best narrative.
Hearing 'Home' for the first time, 16 years ago, was what made me fall in love with Dream Theater. A friend of mine had shown me "A Change of Seasons - Funeral for a Friend" before, but I didn't really like it. As soon as I listened to this one, my whole life changed. I'll never go without Dream Theater for as long as I live ❤
check out Breaking All Illusions. Its another Heavy song I know you will love. This one features the 2nd Drummer, Mike Mangini. Who would stay with the band till just this last year when Portnoy returned.
The Singer is James Labrie and he had an accident later in his career which had an impact on his Voice what we hear today…… The First Album head a different Singer and Jordan joined later but the first Keyboarder was great too…
@@rineran It was in December of 1994 during the Awake tour, not the I&W tour, that James had the food poisoning incident that caused the vocal cord rupture. That's why James voice still sounds magnificent on the Awake album which was released in late October of 1994.
James LaBrie Vocals John Petrucci Guitars John Myung Bass Guitar Mike Portnoy Drums Jordan Rudess Keyboards This is their first album with JR on keyboards.
I was noticing in the chat that nobody commented that on their very first album they had a different singer named Charlie Dominici. Also there were 3 keyboard players in the bands career. Kevin moore started and was replaced with Derek Sherinian when he left. They wanted to have Jordan Rudess, who was not available at the time. When he was available, Dream Theater kicked out Derek to replace him with Jordan.
It always awesome to see somebody that dont know all DT songs react to them, because like in this case, everything was not prog till it became prog hahahahahahaah
Yeah, man! Home is probably DTs heaviest intro/riff out of everything pretty much up to As I Am, and even though that song is quite chunky and heavy, you're right in that there's a more loose/organic vibe to the way this song is written and it always gets me bopping way more than As I Am does. 🔥🔥🔥 Really, this album was one of the highest points in DTs career, imo. It's probably less sticky than something like Images and Words, but they hit a peak of storytelling in their composition during Scenes that stuck with me in a more profound way than most of their other albums. I'm rambling, but long story short: I love DT. I love this era of DT. I loved older DT as well but this DT is the DT we're watching now.
Nothing is heavier or more intense than Panic Attack, and I don't think there ever will be. Images and Words is my timeless classic album, as you said it sticks more.
@dodgrblu everyone's definition of heavy is different. Panic Attack is super intense. But in terms of just heavy I think of The Mirror. Feels like a container ship being dropped on your head.
Even though Mike is back in the band, there is a big shadow hanging over them and that shadow is James Labrie. At some point they need to let him go. Rather sooner or later. The vocal parts are so difficult that it is just impossible to make it sound good live if vocalist has completely destroyed his singing abilities. So sad 😢
James LaBrie injured his voice long ago and this was several years after, and I'd say the 80s vibrato is more of a come back to regain his voice. And he is actually the 2nd singer, they had a different one on their very first album, although that often gets overlooked. There's so much great music from DT going from Images and Words(1992) all the way to Octavarium(2005). After that is when they start to lose their way.
James sounds really strong on this track aswell. Not a fan of every individual song on this album as its a concept album so some songs are just filler but this is definitly the best song on the album.
Myung mentioned in an interview that he had been listening to a lot of Tool. Thus, his bass during the intro.
Geebz: "they're toning down the prog on this a bit, it's less face melting"
Home instrumental section: Hold my beer
That's hilarious!!!
Instrumental Section: *cough* *cough* 19/16
Prog listeners showing songs: waaaait for it

This was a life changing album for me. Got me into "prog" and opened up my mind to a whole new realm of musical possibilities.
Same here! My first prog album, too. And my favorite album of all time.
Yep same. A mate showed me the Scenes From New York recording on VHS 20 odd yrs ago and I absolutely couldn't believe what I was seeing.

The outro is also sick imo.... 😉😉😉
I've listened to this entire album front to back maybe 200 times in my years. Amazing work.
The room on the drums in this album is probably my favorite of any DT album.
Home is definitely one of DT's high points in general.
The snare is a masterful tune. And the overheads catching all those random little accent cymbals and stacks is worth a kiss for sure. Drum sound is amazing on metropolis 2
Learning to Live is a tear-jerker.

That bass riff is very similar to Tool's "Forty six & 2", they (DT) even mention it on the live DVD's commentary track during the intro of this song.
I don't hear it
Even though Mike is back in the band, there is a big shadow hanging over them and that shadow is James Labrie. At some point they need to let him go. Rather sooner or later. The vocal parts are so difficult that it is just impossible to make it sound good live if vocalist has completely destroyed his singing abilities. So sad 😢
This album is an absolute experience. And i dont even love DT that much
James LaBrie injured his voice long ago and this was several years after, and I'd say the 80s vibrato is more of a come back to regain his voice.
Earlier works !? This is Dream Theater ! Personally could never get into anything post Octavarium... ( even that album was a stretch )
