  • William Shatner, the actor who played Captain James T. Kirk on the original Star Trek television series, provided a special message to the crew of space shuttle Discovery during the 3:23 a.m. EST wakeup call on Mon., Mar. 7. As Alexander Courage's "Star Trek" theme song played underneath, Shatner replaced the original television introduction with, "Space, the final frontier. These have been the voyages of the Space Shuttle Discovery. Her 30 year mission: To seek out new science. To build new outposts. To bring nations together on the final frontier. To boldly go, and do, what no spacecraft has done before." The "Theme from Star Trek" received the second most votes in a public contest from a Top 40 list for NASA's Song Contest. Shatner recorded the custom introduction for Discovery's final voyage -- its 39th flight and 13th to the International Space Station.

Imagine captain Kirk actually on the ISS. The station would be a mess of space madness and green women within a week. And trekkies all over the world would be loving it.

Yes, but we would also be assuming that the ISS would be expanded to SpaceDock One, and that the Enterprise was in the process of being built...

Gene would be so proud! I cant help but think that those words, spoken by that voice, made each of them swell with emotion--to be a real live part of the phenomenon that was Star Trek. Truth is, Star Trek was the show that best personified the ever-questing spirit of man, no other show, no other series ever came close.
William Shatner, as Capt James T. Kirk, DID boldly go. And we all followed, and I believe, will keep following that voice, that directive, that spirit, to the final frontier.

A shame that they didn't get the actors of captains picard and janeway to record similar introductions.

Enterprise was a test bed that never flew outside the atmosphere. The original plan was to retrofit it for spaceflight, but that never happened. It was retired from free flight in 1979... almost two years before the first shuttle launch. Though, it did fly on the back of the NASA shuttle carrier aircraft several times after that.

It is pretty lame after the lift-off The first 35 seconds were good, the remaining time was just still shots to the music. This could have been better but the ship jumped the shark.
