- William Shatner, the actor who played Captain James T. Kirk on the original Star Trek television series, provided a special message to the crew of space shuttle Discovery during the 3:23 a.m. EST wakeup call on Mon., Mar. 7. As Alexander Courage's "Star Trek" theme song played underneath, Shatner replaced the original television introduction with, "Space, the final frontier. These have been the voyages of the Space Shuttle Discovery. Her 30 year mission: To seek out new science. To build new outposts. To bring nations together on the final frontier. To boldly go, and do, what no spacecraft has done before." The "Theme from Star Trek" received the second most votes in a public contest from a Top 40 list for NASA's Song Contest. Shatner recorded the custom introduction for Discovery's final voyage -- its 39th flight and 13th to the International Space Station.
Imagine captain Kirk actually on the ISS. The station would be a mess of space madness and green women within a week. And trekkies all over the world would be loving it.
Yes, but we would also be assuming that the ISS would be expanded to SpaceDock One, and that the Enterprise was in the process of being built...
😂😂😂 True dat!
He just announced he’s going to be aboard Blue Horizon’s next flight into space!!! EPIC!!
Second star to the right, and straight on till morning...
tada and today William Shatner made history as the oldest person to reach Space. I could not be more excited to be a witness to this historical moment. Live long and prosper.
Gene would be so proud! I cant help but think that those words, spoken by that voice, made each of them swell with emotion--to be a real live part of the phenomenon that was Star Trek. Truth is, Star Trek was the show that best personified the ever-questing spirit of man, no other show, no other series ever came close.
William Shatner, as Capt James T. Kirk, DID boldly go. And we all followed, and I believe, will keep following that voice, that directive, that spirit, to the final frontier.
I have one question. What were those couple of words? You left us hanging there :O
we need one more movie with capt. Kirk
*gets 2*
Imagine being an astronaught and waking up to that.
Gene Roddenberry, the greatest space visionarian.
This was made before Star Trek Discovery lol
William Shatner on STS-133 Space Shuttle Mission
This pulls at on every heartstring I have, and it does the same to the rest of my family. God bless the Space Station, and God bless William Shatner.
A shame that they didn't get the actors of captains picard and janeway to record similar introductions.
They could do them for the ISS. They wake up, too.
Space the final frontier These Are the Voyages of the Space Shuttle Discovery to seek out new life and new civilizations and go to Mars
Why in hell wasn't this done with Space Shuttle Enterprise??
Ent never went above leo
Enterprise was a test bed that never flew outside the atmosphere. The original plan was to retrofit it for spaceflight, but that never happened. It was retired from free flight in 1979... almost two years before the first shuttle launch. Though, it did fly on the back of the NASA shuttle carrier aircraft several times after that.
And now William Shatner will fly into space aboard Blue Origin!
729th Approved !!!
And just a little over 10 years later..we send Kirk to space for real.
I really like this introduction.
FANTASTIC!!, THANKS FOR THE THRILLS DISCOVERY AND ALL WHO FLEW WITH HER !!
We salute you Captain Kirk!!!
I guess now Discovery is ready for "The Voyage Home".
Better be careful with the Space program and AI . Remember Hal ?
That intro is one of the best and transcends all of us to a higher purpose. To boldly go…
And then Kirk got to go into space for real
They should have put a little REVERB On his vocal.
Could have at least lasted 17.01 seconds more………..
I wonder if William Shatner was paid to do this.
USS Discovery NCC-1031
Next Patrick Stewart
Star Trek Discovery
you mean star trek gone into darkness
But not that one
I used to listen to these all the time miss them
ISS turns into SpaceDock in the Future + SpaceX Starships docked and people travelling through the ISS before departing to the Moon and Mars
If only I was special enough to be woken up by Shatner...
[TH-cam feeding frenzy comment, above.]

Okay I'm watching Flight Day 12 highlights right now and I heard for the first time this wake up call and I gotta say........that is the most EPIC wake up call in the history of NASA's wake up calls!!!
I'm impressed! That is awesome!!

It's not the same.
Starship goes to any planet and back again.
Space shuttle goes to a space station orbiting Earth.
united states best thing which is discovery and the other space shuttle
It is pretty lame after the lift-off The first 35 seconds were good, the remaining time was just still shots to the music. This could have been better but the ship jumped the shark.
