  • Honey bee frame with five queen cells using the emergency method. First queen emerged on Day 1 and I moved her before she killed the others. This video shows the 2nd queen and how she killed the 3rd one.

    That last bee was some real shit, genuinely looked like that worker had put everything into that queen bee or something.

      thats exactly what I was thinking, I feel like he was who nourished her and cared for her and helped her emerge and he seemed so devastated that she died😭

      Bees aren't that sentimental. She (workers are female) was dragging the queen away so there wasn't a dead body polluting the hive.

      Probably because we don't have a completely hierarchic society. And we're not bees.

    • @magical11
      @magical11 8 ปีที่แล้ว +69

      Technically they aren't being "born". These are queens; the human equivalent is a princess being crowned queen and then axing off all her competitors.

    Okay, but he said that he was gonna cut the queens out before they hatched and put them each with bees away from each other so that the first queen wouldn't get out and kill the rest. Then he just let her get out and run around and sting everybody. Wth.

    • @mosisusasu9205

      From the sounds of things the bee got out when he wasn't watching over the hive. Like he said, in the next few hours, so he probably wasn't watching it as it came out, and it killed the others.

      Yep, he said he'd watch them, and separate them so he'd end up with four queens. Then he totally effed up, neglects to separate them, one queen killed and the guy says, "Yeah she's half-baked." Caring and committed he sure ain't! Maybe it's him who's half-baked😒.

    • @molliescreations4497
      @molliescreations4497 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Was wondering the same thing y he said he was going to remove 4 of them and then he didn’t.
      He could have cut all the Queen cells out but 1, with a utility knife and taken some of the bees from this hive to a a new box. Not sure wth he was thinking!

      @Knappa22 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh quit moaning. A beekeeper can’t watch a hive 24/7. And what happened here was perfectly natural. This is what happens. The first queen to emerge will immediately set about eliminating her competition.

    For Varroa Mite control, have you (beekeeper) seen a solution called a Varroa Gate? This simple plastic strip is placed at the nest entrance, has holes for bee entry/exit, and is impregnated with a varroacide. It also harms neither her or honey the produce. Might be a solution for larger beekeepers using their colonies to pollinate orchards, but, they might be a mite solution.

    why not, when all the queens are still inside the cells, just cut the whole comb into 5, each part having exactly 'one' queen cell with number of bees, and place them each in one separate hive with empty combs? Wouldnt be easier that way? It also reduces the possible queen casualties. Doesnt it?

    • @DougBrownVancouver

    • @DougBrownVancouver
      @DougBrownVancouver  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Beekeeping is a huge hobby in Australia. You need a back lawn for sure and that's about it. If your unit is an apartment you can possibly arrange with the building manager to keep hives on the roof. I don't know about licensing in Sydney--Just look up your municipal by-laws and/or call city hall. Hope this helps.

    Two questions: 1) Why were you using plastic foundation instead of beeswax? ( I just finished watching a UTube video of how that is made), 2) Where does the royal jelly come from, i.e., which bees make it? Thanks for your excellent video. I am learning a lot here.

      Plastic is readily available whereas wax is not. Bees secrete royal jelly from a gland on their abdomen.

    Little bees work so hard. How long and how many does it take to make the spoonful of honey I ate this morning. I wonder.

    Thanks for sharing. I have 2 frames with 5 caped queen cells. Going to do some splits. Into nucs . Hope thay still have time to build up before winter.

      That's what I'm hoping for. I think if you feed them and add some pollen patties you'll get a nice booming hive for the winter. The queen will lay beyond the normal season if she's still seeing food coming in.
