Last spring, I started beekeeping with a NUC, a package and a feral swarm, re-queened some boxes with [Barnyard Bees] mated queens in late summer. Came out of winter with six colonies, currently have 25 boxes with bees in them; started rearing queens with small splits believed to be a carnelian mother mated to Italian. Most of my boxes are 5-frame and a queen castle to establish a hive before moving the bees to 10 frame boxes. David is right about building numbers because deadouts range from 30-50 percent overwinter from food stores and mites.. Keep in mind, I had nothing a year ago.
Ty very much Dave, as a new keeper I find this very informative and will probably watch it more then once. I like the idea of growing my own bees MUCH more then having to buy them season after season. Ty for sharing your time, Blessed Days...
When you catch a swarm do you always use a 2 frame swarm box? My wife and I have had bees for 8 years and always used 5 frame swarm boxes are 2 frame boxes better?
Hi, great vid, what would happen if you put both of the two frame nucs on the old hive spot would that equal out the forager fly back or cause problems, thanks
I bought a 5 frame nuc package yesterday and while I was transferring them over to my 8 frame hive I noticed they made one queen cell. I didn't see any egg or larvae in it but it was also hard to tell. I found the queen and watched her for a few and she seemed healthy and laying well. So I put that frame as well as an empty frame of foundation in a 2 framer. Do you recommend that or should I put it back in the hive? Thanks
The problem with using Queen cells is you have to settle for her getting mated with whatever drones are in the area the results of that breeding might give you some very very nasty bees it's very tough to control the Drone population in your area and if there are Africanized honey bees almost assuredly she will get bred by them the results of which is something you really don't want ask me how I know LOL
I had a summer colony last year that made themselves a new queen and they turned into my pissy hive. I had many others that are great. I guess you never know what you get. I just requeened that pissy colony, they are terrible. How long does it take to turn over all those bees? It's a large colony. My worry is the pissy drones are flying around.
I ordered 2 packages of bees and 2 queens from barnyardbees, I installed them last week, all 4 hives are cooking,,, thanks David... great bees..

These nucs look very nice👍👍😊🐝
Thanks David. Good stuff!
I’ve heard that this is more difficult but that it works most of the time. Thanks for covering this!
Jimmy is a jewel of knowledge and David is as well. I plan to be back at Barnyard Bees in the next few days. Jennifer is amazing as well.

I got my bees in April. Is it too late to treat for Varoa mites?
I saw another queen cell in the middle of the frame at 1:54.

David how do you know you can move those frames with cells without killing them? How to avoid those 4 days of not shaking tehm?
All good but I have to move hives to all my friends houses in NM roundup kills way more of my hives than winter of mites.
Hey BB is the bee Population increasing or decreasing?
have started Cell builders last week. Have 10 cell builders going. Plan on 700 cells to put into nukes soon
