  • MAX REVS gets an exclusive opportunity to bring together and compare two members of the Porsche Cayman S family. In this video we explore the design differences between the 987 and 981.
    I thought I'd prefer my 987.2 by a mile, but I left appreciating both for their merits.
    These are the Caymans you want! Those with naturally aspirated 6 cylinder engines.
    Enjoying Life & Cars To The MAX!!

    Arctic blue? You mean Aqua Blue Metallic? Fairly certain there is no arctic blue. In my opinion both Cayman's are beautiful cars. However I think the 987.2 has the prettier lines overall with the flying buttress's being much more pronounced along with a bit more curvy, the 981 has a bit sharper lines. Now the GT4 seems to correct the subtleness of the 981 being much more aggressive looking, as did the Cayman R for the 987.2 gen.

      Thank-you for your comments and correction on the colour. You’re right! The dealership (911virgin) contacted me as soon as the video went up to say the same thing about the dodgy colour I mentioned. Would have taken me 4 hours to correct, what with editing and uploading 3Gb to TH-cam. I’m going to pin this comment at the top ;-)

    The 987 has a nicer front end.
    The 981 has a nicer rear.
    They're equally nice in side profile.
    981 has a better interior.
    987 hasn't got the electric steering.
    It's small differences but if I was in a 987 and pulled up beside a 981 I wouldn't feel short changed. Positives and less positives on both cars and two different versions together is not a competition, it's a celebration.

    • @Jwdude123

      It’s almost like Porsche realized that the 987.1 front end looked too much like the 911…and deliberately made it uglier in subsequent generations. In my opinion Porsche got the styling right first time.

    • @BrainFuck10
      @BrainFuck10 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Nah..the 987 has a better front and rear cuz the lights are smaller, more traditional, and elegant but the 981 has a better side profile cuz the side intakes are bigger, interior wise I actually think the 987 is better cuz it doesn’t have that high center console that you bump your knee into on newer Porsche’s

    Tough call. The 987 is the more analog of the two and in the dawn of the electric car age, that means its something special. Physical key ignition, NA flat 6 engine, manual gearbox, these are all things you won't find in the next decade or there after. The 987 has a very expensive to manufacture rear end, I'm sure Porsche cut back here on the 981, the horizontal line and plastic used by the vents is a clue. Less sheetmetal bends in the 981 also saves money. The 987 came out during a worldwide recession, almost a depression not many out there. Still though the 981 is beautiful too and both have the key NA flat 6 engines, you can't go wrong with either.

      The 981 also has a much stiffer body. 40,000 NM/degree versus 30,000NM/degree of the 987 gen2. This improves the handling /cornering reliability... who would have thought that was even possible! :)

    I just bought a 2015 Cayman 981, which is sapphire blue metallic, black interior, today. It has the sport wheel upgrade, 6 speed and 32k miles. Thanks for the detailed comparisons, I know I made the right choice. I'll get my first look at it when it arrives next week from a dealer in Michigan. I'm giving up my 1986 Red Turbo Porsche. Time to upgrade.

      Jersey Mel Ah man, sweet times for you coming up. Congratulations!! Plus you have one of the most desirable body colours imho. Don’t see many blue Caymans around on the roads. That is a great late model 981 with low mileage which you’ve managed to find. May I ask, did you have to wait around for this Cayman, or was it available the moment you started to look for a new car? Sounds like it’s a real keeper!! I wish you many happy years of motoring to come.

    987.2 is like a German Dino in some respects with a more timeless, curvier aesthetic than the 981. The 981 by comparison seems a bit more like a 308 - more angular, and probably a slight performance edge from engine tune and lighter-weight materials. That said, I prefer our 987.2 for its curves, the last of the hydraulically assisted steering, better visibility. Great vids you're making - keep up the fine work.

      Andy. What I would say is properly view each car if you can. I always thought the 987 was the better looking car from magazines and videos. Getting up close to the 981, and spending some time with it... it really grows on you. Especially if you want a more updated interior. For me budget was an issue, the 981 was too expensive. Anyhow I love my 987, and I understand why people also love the 981. As for the 718...

    I drive a 987 Cayman in Atlas Grey Metallic and it's the only car I've owned where the novelty factor has never wore off, even after 18 months of ownership. It's beautiful to look at and a fantastic car to drive. I've never driven a 911 and I may one day take the plunge but I somehow think it won't be any better than what I have.

    • @MAXREVS
      @MAXREVS  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      James Richardson I hear you man! I’m in a similar position... 987.2 manual. Would like a bit more power, but would never forgo the mid-engined layout for a 911. Now if I could afford a Cayman GT4...

    • @jamesdrichardson3447
      @jamesdrichardson3447 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MAXREVS I also forgot to mention my car is also an ex 911 Virgin car, the guy I bought it from purchased it from them and he only kept it for 6 months saying that it was too noisy for him being mid-engined. I can't understand his thinking as that Howl right behind you in 2nd and 3rd gear is just so hypnotic to me.
      I know what you mean about the mid-engined balance, and that's before we even get onto the road holding.
      My finances can go to 25k which puts me in a 2006 model 997 with around 70-80k miles, maybe just outside of the scary IMS issues of the earlier cars.
      Do I risk it knowing I'd let my faultless 987 go. !!!!

    • @MAXREVS
      @MAXREVS  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Any Cayman 987 (G1/G2) vs an older, higher mileage 997? Ultimately it’s your choice, so I won’t tell you what to do. From your point of view, what is the appeal of the 997? Is it simply because it’s a 911? Do you need the back seats? There is a lot of emotional magic attached to the 911, I won’t deny that. However if you already own a Cayman, you already have the handling dynamics, chassis, and I would argue better engine placement. So the only other reasons to specifically get a 911, say versus a Cayman 981/718 (with the more modern interiors), is because there must be a characteristic of the 911 which you’re after, that you don’t have in your Cayman. What is that? Plus getting an older, higher mileage car when your existing Cayman has been faultless... hmmmmm.
      It’s tongue in cheek, but check this video out - th-cam.com/video/7rL597h8z08/w-d-xo.html

    • @jamesdrichardson3447
      @jamesdrichardson3447 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MAXREVS ...you hit the nail right on the head, ......it's because it's a 911.
      I'll admit I'm a badge snob, :-) always have been but now that I have the badge do I have the right model I ask myself. My Cayman is everything I could wish for but I somehow hanker over the Kudos and the legendary status of the 911.
      I understand Cayman owners are correct when they say the handling is better, the car is newer and more up to date and controversially it's put together that little bit better but still the 911 draw is strong.
      I think your head rules your heart which is the most sensible option whereas in my case it's the opposite. I'm also a bit greedy and wish I could have both. ;-)
      Maybe a few hours behind the wheel of a 911 will put all this nonsense in my head to rest.
      A great review by the way, looking at the finer points of the styling changes is always overlooked, a nice soundtrack too. Enjoy your weekend.

    • @MAXREVS
      @MAXREVS  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      James Richardson By the way, nothing wrong with hankering after a 911. Calling yourself a badge snob is a bit harsh if you ask me ;-) We all have dreams and aspirations only we can understand, and sometimes even we don’t understand ourselves!! Do what you think is right for yourself, and don’t worry about the others. My only comment would be the age of the car you’re looking to buy into. I just shot raw footage of my next video today... I learnt that a Porsche isn’t designed to live forever, and as many of the components are geared towards sports cars, that means they’re lighter, and won’t last as long as thicker, heavier components. Stay tuned for the next video!

    Having had a 987.2 then a 981 I like certain things better on each of them plus things I don't like as much. Ergonomically speaking I prefer the interior of the 987 while I like the interior styling, fit and finish of the 981 interior. The 987 has hydraulic steering which I prefer. I also like the 3 handy pop out CD trays in the glove box of the 987 and wish they had carried them over to the 981. I actually prefer the headlight design of the 987.2 better than the 981 but I like the much more aggressive side intakes and the rear spoiler design of the 981. If I could reverse time knowing what I know now I probably would have kept my Meteor Grey 987.2. It was a little too front heavy looking compared with the 981 but the rear overhang of the 987 I prefer over the 981 which feels a tad short to me. I like the Aqua and Sapphire Blue color like these the best but was unable to locate one so I settled for the Meteor Grey which I like a lot too.

    Both of them are going to be unique driving experiences in the future. Both are louder than the 911 of its generation, and the overall of the car responds faster and sportier. Weather it be the PDK , or the way the chassis responds. Aside from lacking a heavy rear weight, Caymans have inherited more Porsche DNA over the years.
    I suspect 981 might even be a halo classic Cayman in the decades to come

    Thank you for this vid! I watched it a couple of months back (and discovered the rest of your channel in the process!) when I was in the market and debating 987.2 vs 981. This really helped me decide. Went for the 981 in the end mainly on the interior aspect. It's my DD so I fancied the little extra "plushness" from the cabin. It's also the same sapphire blue too by coincidence. Thanks again!

    For me the main advantages of the 981 are the side air vents are a MUCH better shape (I don't think the video compared the side vents), the interior is improved and the three vents at the front have been re-shaped and I just prefer the look of them on the 981.
    I've just committed to a 981 but it was more due to lower mileage and age as I want a daily driver.

    love the colour, both cars are GORGEOUS. I actually really like the interior in the 987 gen 2 tbh, everything where it needs to be, not over complicated or cluttered.
    However, the interior in the 981 makes me think I'm in a Carrera GT, big plus point for me as I absolutely LOVE that car.
    Do you know if there's noticeable difference in fuel economy between them ??

      Yeah you’re right. Both cars are amazing... I came away with a lot more respect for the 981, as previously I would have always gone for the 987. The fact my favourite Cayman is the GT4 says it all.
      As far as fuel economy is concerned I think they’re both the same, manual vs manual - 30mpg. The PDK might shift the figure by a couple of mpg.

    the continuation of the rear spoiler line into the rear lights on the 981 doesn't make any sense whatsoever when the spoiler is up. none at all. and the loss of the faux topline is a mistake too. the 981 looks too much like the dated 911 roofline. IMO, the older one is the one to be preferred in all respects. ditto on the side vents. the upswept accent lines make sense as a continuation of the horizontal rocker line. the horizontal lines are an abrupt change coming from nowhere. the less said about the rear defuser on the 981 the better...

    The reason for the pronounce bridge on the 987. Is the fact that they change the rake of the windshield and extended the window out to take away the Peeky part of the 987 roof to simply smooth the side appearance of the roofline.

    987.2 looks great. Only thing making it looked dated is the side ducts and wheels. Personally, I would take the 981. I love how the 987 is more raw. But for a daily commute, the 981 would be the one to choose if driving as a daily. Simply more refined. (I am also a Aqua Blue 987.2 owner myself).

    Like you, I have a 987.2 (Boxster) which I feel is not only everything I could wish for from a sports car but also the pinnacle of the Cayman/Boxster models. Although I’ve always felt that the 981 is the better looking car (and in Cayman form one of the best looking cars Porsche has ever made), the 987 offers a more raw and “analogue” experience, with the electronic steering and handbrake of the 981 being the biggest drawbacks. But then came along the 718 GTS 4.0 .....

    • @MAXREVS
      @MAXREVS  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Clive Harper I’m always in 2 minds about which I prefer the looks of between 987 and 981. At the end of the day I think it’s the 981 for me. However I think the best looking Cayman is the 718 GT4. As for the engine noise, for me you cannot beat the 981 GT4 engine. Inside the cabin it just sounds so different to the 4.0 block in the new 718 GTS. The new 4.0 block is more engine noise, less exhaust from inside the cabin. The 981 GT4 had a different engine sound, and you could hear exhaust noise in the cabin. So for audio quality, the 981 GT4 is my best. Do I sound fussy?! Hahahahaha!!

    Great video! I am also super biased as I own a 987.1 S, manual short shift, in Artic grey with Terracotta interior. What keeps me on the 987 side is the hydraulic steering and the more RAW feeling compared to the later generations. For a future classic to be used as a second car, those things make the difference in my opinion. But I am sure the 981 is the better overall car. More refined and modern. Just not as curvy and slightly more aggressive in styling. Both are awesome!

      @@MAXREVS The Carnewal GT exhaust is awesome. I imported one and had it fitted. My 2006 S is fully optioned (it was one of 3 dealer optioned showroom cars to come to NZ). Only option that was not available in the first year was the sport exhaust. And I found the standard one just too quiet.
      The great thing about the Carnewal is that these are the standard Porsche mufflers with the rear cats removed and some of the inner tubing reworked. You can either swap your standard mufflers for a reworked one, or have your own set reworked. Just don't replace the exhaust tip and your car looks standard as before.
      Gives a wonderful raw sound at cold starts, great pops and crackles when letting of the gas and a great Porsche howl above 5000rpm. They have a dealer in the US. Gives you a much cheaper option then refitting a OEM Porsche sport exhaust. You just do not have a switch, it's always on :)

In my opinion, the 982 combines the sleekness of the 987 with an enhanced modern design to the 981. Looks are subjective so I won’t say it’s the best looking car in fact, but it is in fact the best performing cayman to date. Both great looking cars and naturally the 981 is more technologically advanced with a longer wheelbase and wider wheel stance ( I believe ), making for slightly improved handling. Not that the 987 does not handle superbly though. I have a 2006 Gen 1 and feel overall that the 987 has more classic styling than the 981, espc out back. The 987 interior is very nice, but the 981 is arguably better in design and quality. It seems to lack the white dials though from what i could see on the video ?? Thanks for all the efforts that you go to with producing these interesting and well produced videos. Your cheery manner is also very welcome. Going back to your video, your inclusion of the rotating images of both cars together was surprisingly helpful, and two things I really like with the 981`s styling updates are the door creases and crease just below the headlights. Nice like a sharp suit !! The wheel design is lovely too, and those big 20 inchers are peachy. Overall, the 981 is more aggressive looking than the 987 with more sharp edges, espc out back, whereas the 987 is the more curvy of the two with that timeless styling that will stand the test of time. Both are future classics in my book. Cheers.

I also forgot to lift the rear boot lids and compare... ah well. Glad you enjoyed the rotating walk around both cars. It took some manual editing with the video timing to get both shots in sync. Both cars are genius... just a comment on the 981 front fenders...
    The creases running down the front fenders on the 981 are aesthetically bothersome to me. Why did Porsche do that? The bubble looking fenders are Porsche’s iconic signature look, and gorgeous to view from the windshield. The creases are even deeper on the 718. I doubt Porsche would dare to do this to the 911.

    Nearly all the changes are worse.
    987's downward rear into the spoiler is beautiful and slender while 981's iteration just looks bulky like it drank too many beers.
    The spoiler connecting into the lights may have been a good idea on paper but again, just loses personality and makes the vehicle more generic looking. Like an infinity coupe.
    The smoothed out channels for the headlights just take one of the most staple visual queues of the porsche and minimizes it. They should be more voluptuous like the 987.
    981 really just all around looks worse than the 987.

      After the work done on my car, I expect it to last. Things to look out for, be aware of:
      1) Check front coolant hoses, can be done my turning the wheels fully each side, and checking the exposed coolant pipes. Check for any patches on the hoses. A 2010 car on original pipes could be due new ones. Weather/climate dependent and weather it was garaged or not
      2) If it's a manual car, the shifter cables will be original and not the improved ones, i.e. prone to snapping
      3) I think the V belt should have been changed 3 times since 2010, check the belt tensioner (you cannot do this yourself, have to remove the engine cover)
      4) Transmission oil should have been changed
      5) Check front radiators for stone chips, costly to repair
      6) Get a rev range printout from the ECU
      7) Stethoscope against the water pump to listen out for imbalances in the impeller
      A well maintained Cayman should last for years. There are wear and tear items you cannot escape from, e.g. coolant hoses.
      Don't mean to put you off, just got to approach eyes open. A dealer can only sell you a car, and check what is working / not working right now. Ensure you purchase with a warranty in case any of the above go wrong. GOOD LUCK and please keep me informed as to how it goes!

    My first Cayman is 987,2 2,9 manual. Nowadays i wanna to sell it but i really love it. There are more reason: i wanna try PDK, 3,4 engine, comin winter and maybe need money for my business investment. At spring i wanna purchase an other one but i hasitate which one....
    718 has only 4 cylinder + turbo...i thing 6 cylinders boxter has better sound
    981 has a great engine, nice interior, but i dont like rear of the car. (Looks like when your gf would allways eat fast food and put on weight. You would really love her and dont care about her shape...but you would remember what it looked like when you met her. This is my opinion when i compare with earlier Cayman)
    987 is amazing, best looking car in the world. From behind as an ugly frog, i love that shapes. Engine, interior nice, but in 981 these are better. In addition 987 is almost 10 years old tech....i wish i could buy new or used (few years old) 987,2 :/
    It would be best if Porsche makes 987,3 ;)

    I think that 981 Cayman had a blue leather interior.

      Hi there and thanks for your comment. Both cars had blue leather interiors. The 981 seemed to have a slightly lighter shade of blue.

      S Lee Yes, it did, I was the second owner of this car, originally supplied to a stock broker in London, then spent nearly all its life in Jersey until I bought it, it was my 99th 981 Porsche.

      Old for sure but not necessarily worse. The older 987's still had hydraulic steering, mechanical hand brakes and less computer assisted driving. This is especially true with the 718 with it's turbo 4. I believe these older 987's are closer to a purist car, somewhat akin to an older 911, which to me has evolved into more of a GT.

    981 looks semi exotic being inspired slightly from the 918. The 987.... looks alright from the front and just butt ugly from the back. Interior wise 981 hands down.

    Going for the 981, first i want to listen to spotify and dont want to go lower than 2014-15 on a car. Second if i would go lower i would proly had trouble driving in germany for the next years cause the emissions are #1 topic right now. In the next years people will not be able to drive in big citys anymore with these old cars

      David Rakoczy Wow!! I never considered my 987.2 Cayman S to be SO OLD it would be banned from city centers... I know the 981 improved on emissions, but surely by not that much?

    Wing mirrors door mounted??? Perhaps you mean door mirrors? Mirror mounted on wing = wing mirror. Mirror mounted on door = door mirror. Yes, lots of people call door mirrors 'wing mirrors', but then lots of people call whales 'fish', but I wouldn't expect an animal enthusiast to!

    The extended air vents on the 981 do not always work. You have to change a setting to get air from the whole vent or just the chrome surrounded part at the front.

      Wipers are a cost option and were available on both, they look hideous. The airflow over the 987 keeps the rear windscreen dry, even in crazy amounts of rain. As long as you're moving at reasonable speeds, I have never missed the rear wiper on mine.
