TheFlacker99 (Flak) I was actually looking online on a where to buy just these units. Sadly this has come to nothing or I would be working on this project.
just because the game is rendered in 640x480 doesn't mean the screen shows it at that resolution. you can play in downscaled 4k on a 1080p monitor too.
Mr Videos & Games I'd say it's quite a bit below that maybe 120p to 240p at best. I think he said 480p when talking about the max resolution the converter adapter accepts not the screen resolution. In comparison my old TV which was a crt too and had a resolution of something 500p ish and it was about 30" big. the pixel density can't be that superior on tech that's just as old.
@megapro125 Analogue signals will usually be 480 lines at 60Hz or 576 lines at 50Hz. He mentions there is overscan, so if it wasn't skipping lines, I guess its effective resolution would be a little less than this. Around 5:00, his camera actually focusses and there is a fair amount of detail. Definitely not quarter resolution.
This is what I love about you. The simple joy you get out of things that the vast majority of people would consider pointless old crap, and how you can bring them to life and instil that same joy in people like me, who wouldn't normally look twice at them. I've learned so much from this channel in the short time I've been following it. More than anything else I've found a new appreciation for old tech and software that's made life a little more interesting. Thanks for that :)
+Nathanael Ries Its not really pixels on a CRT though, you are looking more at "lines" of resolution on these things, they don't work quite the same way in that regard as LCDs.
Matt P I guess that's what I meant. The scan-lines you are referring to seem unnoticeable to me. And if this little thing still has 480 scan-lines, the compactness and accuracy of this thing's electron gun is impressive.
And now I'm looking at a screen reading about YOU looking at a screen reading about someone who was looking at a screen through a screen through a screen through a screen.
Better not play comp lol. You'll get your ass booted so quick, and frankly when the games take about a half hour at their shortest I wouldn't blame them. Nothing sucks more than having a player that is 100% dead weight, but at least you then you have a something to blame for your loss, and saltiness.
I was on the edge... but now it’s official... I love you! The obscurity of this video is awesome. Just discovered your channel and I literally can’t get enough!
I just wanna say, I love the slightly new direction your Channel is going in with not just game reviews but more and more random related tech stuff and computer/game history! You're the best! Just your voice makes me happy ahaha! I wait for all your vids!
+Szabolcs Hideg Well, you could argue that this will keep the sun out of your eyes, and hence is good for you! Plus, strap on an IR camera and you have hacked yourself night vision!
It's official. That view finder CRT is the coolest thing I've ever seen! I know you can't really see anything very good on such a screen that small, but man, that's too COOL! Awesome video. You earned a sub dude!
I loved this. I adore crazy PC contraptions. I once tried to see if I could get a really fast laser printer to print out a game frame by frame. It almost worked. XD Game of choice was Warcraft 2.
I did the same thing when I broke my family's old camcorder.. I used the view finder as a mini (rather super mini) monitor. I'm not sure but I think it was at least a decade and a half ago, if not more. I never thought anyone else would bother to do the same, lol. That's awesome that you did.. I love all of your videos, espeshially LGR eats. We all eat. Suggestions on better eats are always welcome!
+Lazy Game Reviews That would add some interesting extra tech step's though, with the running it though the PC and converting it to a different scale / setting it up as if it was a duel monitor set-up.
Interesting. I didn't realize those were actually crt screens in there. Seeing as that is from a camcorder, why was the magnification eye piece removed? That would have been fairly easy to see through and wouldn't have had the same delay as running it through your dslr.
Holy crap - I remember stumbling across this video back in the day, and I regret not subscribing so much now. Just found you again recently, and I've been absolutely enamored with your content. I could hardly believe it when I saw this pop up after watching another video, thinking to myself "I think I've seen this before.." Ends up I was a fan before I even knew it.
I gotta say, I love your videos man. I grew up in the 80's and damn I thought I've seen and done it all. However you are doing some stuff I've never thought of. Subbed and entertained!
Omega Rugal Wait! We can save money on straps if we just made a giant one that was like 12" and people would just put them on their tables! Someone needs to make one of those!!!. XD

This video may have been ridiculous to many people, but surely was important to me since that is something I would do myself if I knew how :P Keep tinkering with stuff! I love it
Oh man, this is so rad. It reminds me of the crazy small screens we could get for car rides that were, what... 7 inches? Playin' anything on those was just as fun and difficult as the games. Using something like this would be a blast.

yeah, i enjoy this because i can see you do it instead of trying it out myself. you know, its like my curiosity sensation been satisfied since i know its possible to do stuff like this.
You going through all the various games and things reminds me of all the stuff I tested out when I found a 14" Toshiba CRT that also had component in. Genesis on composite, PS2 on component, various other stuff on S-video, the crispness and clarity were great (always had a 27" CRT but the picture on that wasn't high quality and S-video was the best input type).
I did enjoy this. Thanks! BTW, the deflection yoke is slightly rotated on the neck of the CRT. You can loosen the screw and rotate it to level. Tighten it back down.
Find a pocket TV - Sony and Casio made oodles of them, in both black and white and color variants, and they're dirt cheap on eBay now. It'd make a good general Oddware subject, too.
I remember when I was young my dad had a VHS camera and I always thought the view finder was awesome. I remember it being a clear picture but being small as hell! Thanks for this video had fun watching it!
I once found a 5.5" black&white CRT TV for use in car applications (it ran on 12 Volts) in the tech dump at my school, so I did the most fun thing I could think to do: I took it back to my dorm, got together several of my dorm-mates, and we all huddled around it and played Mario Kart 64 in 4-player split-screen on a 5.5" monochrome monitor. I still have it if you want to try it out for yourself lol. XD
I bet if apple released one as an External i-Device and Mac Micro Monitor it would sell like hot cakes,... "Wow the innovation and practicality" people would say :)

Get 2 of them in color and splice them together and make a CRT Oculus Rift.
Genius.

Man, I've met a LOT of people on rocket league apparently doing this.
Keiya Bachhuber why
It's a joke about people being bad at rocket league.
Keiya Bachhuber when did rocket league become common enough to make jokes about on a video that isn't about rocket league
TheMangled Triangle he plays it in the video
TheMangled Triangle are you kidding rocket league is one of the biggest games in esports

Surprised it's actually 640×480 at that size. Would expect half resolution.
Mr Videos & Games Highest PPI ever
just because the game is rendered in 640x480 doesn't mean the screen shows it at that resolution. you can play in downscaled 4k on a 1080p monitor too.
@megapro125
True, but 1080p monitors don't accept 4K input.
Kinda hard to tell from the video, but it did look like 480p to me. Your thoughts?
Mr Videos & Games I'd say it's quite a bit below that maybe 120p to 240p at best. I think he said 480p when talking about the max resolution the converter adapter accepts not the screen resolution. same here, subbed within 1 minute
but can you play duck hunt? lol
Man, I should've tried that. In theory it might work!
Derpy Pedro it wouldnt worl because it would need colour and pixels to pick up what its actually "shooting" on screen and that things too tiny

ChwkSkateIsDed are you sure it needs color?
almost 99% sure it ran off of the colour of the ducks it saw when you pulled the trigger and also the pixels

Interesting. I didn't realize those were actually crt screens in there. Seeing as that is from a camcorder, why was the magnification eye piece removed? That would have been fairly easy to see through and wouldn't have had the same delay as running it through your dslr.
It was removed to make this look more like a mini CRT as opposed to a retrofitted viewfinder :)
Please make retro VR goggles!
