    This is by no means a comprehensive guide, but a very general overview of a tank's goal/mindset in a dungeon. Many of these concepts can be applied in earlier dungeons as well. Although the vid's focus is tanks, there's plenty of insight for players of other roles to know what to expect from a tank.

    Another useful tip is that using a self-healing move while rounding up the mobs like GNB's Aurora and WAR's Equilibrium is useful for generating a lot of hate to keep the mobs chasing you, healing generates aggro too.
    It's especially good for mobs that aggro from really far away where you can't hit 'em to generate threat and get pulled from a single Regen tick.

    • @DarkDyllon
      @DarkDyllon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      an healer should never apply a regen on the tank during pull, if this happens then just provoke the missed mob (if more either go back a bit for your ranged move)
      Once you're in position you shouldn't have to worry about emnity anymore since tank stance is stupidly strong (i let my DPS friends get close to over taking me, 1 attack of the last in the single target combo attacks and they drop from 90-95% in the emnity bar to around 10%)

    • @AquilaHarukaze
      @AquilaHarukaze 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DarkDyllon you're totally right. Self-healing during the pick up is just a consistent way to skip any of that song and dance. It really helps for very specific instances like the dogs in Ala Mhigo and the big final stretch in Anyder.

    • @NoNa-zc7ul
      @NoNa-zc7ul 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do Aurora too, although sometimes I feel like it’s a waste cuz we need it when the mobs starts to attack

    • @AquilaHarukaze
      @AquilaHarukaze 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@NoNa-zc7ul If you do it right after Lightning Shot, the 2-3 ticks from Aurora while you run will cover you for the handful of autos you catch while gathering 'em up so it's not too bad.

    Thank you for this! People often make it seem as though tanking is an untouchable, high-level, "don't bother until you've played the game for 5 years" job. It's not, and this guide proves it. It is, however, a learning experience, just like with any other job. The more you do it, the less scary it becomes. And the finer points come in time with a bit of willingness to learn and practice. Mistakes are gonna happen, so get comfy with the idea that you may not be perfect every single time. Just do the best you can, help out your dungeon mates, be open to critiques and and above all else RELAX!

    Watching these videos gives so much more clarity and ease of explanation on why and how in so many regards. They're quick, to the point, with brief yet precise explanations, with examples given of just the key pieces of information instead of what others do of showing the entire drawn out fight for what you've boiled down to as 2/3 3 second segments.

    Amazing editing as always. I also wanted to commend you for presenting relatable and constructive benefits for pulling big rather than just focusing on speed.
    Personally I already do wall-to-wall because I agree that it's very fun, but a lot of people don't necessarily care about speed or efficiency in their daily wizard chores. As a result, they get their hackles up when "getting it done sooner" is the only reason to do something they perceive to be difficult, particularly when they're doing something that is otherwise pretty chill. You've explained why it's not only better but ends up being more comfortable and easier in a lot of ways which I think does a better job of convincing people of why it's so great. This is something I personally feel a lot of the FFXIV community actually struggles with, and a big reason why you see so much pushback to feedback in general. So props again for that, I think a lot of people could learn from your teaching method to better convey gameplay techniques to new players.

These is consistently straight to the point, not hanging on certain topics with unecessary details and the visuals are entertaining, clean and easy on the eyes. Keep making these guides please!!

    Just a note from a tank - Sometimes a single defensive is not enough to handle wall to wall pulls. Do not be afraid to double stack if you are taking too much damage, or if the healer is not keeping up with the damage you are taking. And most importantly, only pull what you are comfortable with. You will learn what you can handle with practice, and that takes time and repetition!
    EDIT: And be aware of what type of damage you are taking. Some mitigation (DRK/GNB) is magic defensive mitigation, this will not work on physical based mobs!

    • @DarkDyllon
      @DarkDyllon 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      i would say, step out of your comfort zone every once in a while, you won't improve if you keep doing what you already know.
      On your mention on be aware what type of damage you are taking, i will have to mention that the only 2 ways to know if it's magic vs physical damage is to check either the combat log ("casting" is obviously magical and "readies" is physical) or via FFlogs which flat out tells you, but FFlogs for dungeons is not a thing.
      The other way, which personally should be standard in the game but Yoshi P thinks that not adding this adds a layer of strategy (spoiler, it doesn't DRKs will just use their magical CDs in the hope that it mitigates, but it doesn't even tell you if it mitigates or not since the damage rolls are random within a certain range)
      FF14 quick launcher lets you launch the game instantly without having to type out your password everytime (or the slow launcher in general)
      but it also has plugins, including a damage indicator plugin which colors the damage types, blue for magic, red for physical and another for darkness damage (damage you can't mitigate unless it's shields)
      No idea why the damage indicator plugin isn't already in the vanilla FF14, people always say "just see if it physically hits you, if yes then it's physical"
      Ok, i'll give my example on why this example is bullshit, Kefka for example in the Sigmascape raid series, his Tank Buster is an attack that throws pots and pans ontop of you (so you would think physical since the pots and pans are not magical but physical objects hitting you) but it's magical damage (remember having to invuln it or let my drk OT take over since he could easily mitigate more than i could)
      Another good example is Omega (O11) in the Alphascape raid series, he has a tankbuster called "mustard bomb" which is obviously a physical move right? nope, it's magical damage, i literally let the drk tank this as a WAR since he was better equiped in handling those tankbusters, with 2 CDs i would drop to around 10-15% HP, he would drop to around 35-40% HP.

      @@DarkDyllon fflogs ids the bane to ff14 (as i have seen the community become cut throat after the site was made) :/ also reason why no dps meter in the gamer as is is due to divisive they are. should go to live letters where yoshida goes over it.
      a good potion of the community is ps4 as well. but dmg vs magic is pretty obvious if you pay attention to the telegraphs.

    • @TeaMMatE11

      @@azadalamiq FFlogs is only bad if it's utilized for toxicity. if people use it for personal improvement and don't bug other people about their parses (minus statics because that info is crucial in that setting) then I see no problems with it. But when people start jumping down other people's throats about someone playing poorly, then there's problems.

    I tend to usually pop Reprisal and Arm's Length together and it reduces the damage so much sometimes that it just becomes a burst phase for the healer where he can go ham on the damage. It also helps if I see that the healer might be struggling to heal up the damage too.

    Amazing video and I would show this to some less experienced tanks! Only thing I would suggest is explain why Arms Length is useful in pulls as tanks don't seem to realize the slow works on trash mobs so they immediately disregard it as a tank cooldown for trash pulls.

    Awesome Video as always! I'd also like to add that you shouldn't underestimate things like Arm's Length or Reprisal on big pulls. While it doesn't quite give the same breathing room as a full-on CD would, its sometimes just enough to get through if there's any turbulence or something unexpected happens.

    big tip a lot of people miss: sprint lasts 20 seconds if you do it out of combat. while you're sprinting, the mobs run to you to catch up and aren't doing damage. the best thing to do, therefore, is to sprint before engaging the first pack, tap everything with an aoe preferably without lingering, then just booking it. smacking arms length (and tbn if you're drk it's really good here) so when everythign catches up and wails on you your healer will have some breathing room during the huge damage spikes at the beginning of the pull
    don't make your healer waste a bunch of cooldowns because you stop at every pack for a couple of gcds then keep running at unpredictable times. just get them all as fast as possible.

    • @achilleaskifonidis5824
      @achilleaskifonidis5824 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's good except for the case that the dps decide to dps on the way to the last pack.So now,with only one aoe gcd in as tank you have dps taking aggro.

    • @toxicfem69
      @toxicfem69 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@achilleaskifonidis5824 not really. you can use ranged along the run, the dps are dingdongs if they start doing cooldowns before you settle which is what it'd take to pull them off of you.
      and like, DPS has their own responsibility, and you shouldn't tank worse because other people might play badly. they should either not pull off the tank or handle it if they do. when i am the dps and in this situation, I am either careful not to pull aggro or I do, then do my own arms' length (where applicable) and then make sure to position whatever's on me inside the tank's AOEs. using your dps class' defensive abilities and self-healing is helpful here (and why you hecking have those buttons).

    PLD tip: blocks (and parries for all tanks) only occur in front. As much as possible, try to position mobs in front of tank.
    Thanks to this vid, I changed my perspective on the usage of WAR's Nascent Flash --- I've been using it as an offtank skill, never thought of using it like Bloodbath like in the old days!

    • @rithli
      @rithli  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blocking and parrying isn't affected by the direction you face -- You'll parry/block autos even while back-turned.
