Welcome back to Evolution of a Snake: THE Taylor Swift Podcast, detailing the life and times of the world's most famous reptile. Hosted by two longtime fans unafraid to critique, EOAS analyzes the twists and turns of recent memory's most eventful pop legacy.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!! This is the video accompaniment to 2017: Part 2, published earlier this year.
Taylor Swift's reputation era is much lauded as one of her most concise, aesthetically thematic, and sonically jarring eras. To no one's surprise, we concur with this estimation. However, much gets lost in hindsight. Though her career recovered fairly quickly, there were numerous hiccups in the roll-out to reputation that were actually....kind of a big deal. Alt-right sympathizer allegations?! Is the ACLU getting involved? It's a lot. We cover it all, from the conclusion of her trial to the iconic Instagram wipe, Look What You Made Me Do music video, and her brand new approach to being a pop star. There will be no further explanation. There will just be reputation!
The Snakes venture into familiar but undesirable territory in today's episode: the Billboard slums. We’re here today, to examine some claims they’ve made about who is (or isn’t) in the Great 21st Century Pop Star Canon with our encyclopedic knowledge of Taylor Swift and our…many opinions on everything else. Should Taylor have gotten that #1 spot? Were there any egregious misses in the honorable mentions category? Should Justin Timberlake have rights? All this and more.

2.5 hrs of swiftologist and maddie!? YES PLEASE ❤ thanks gurlzz! Xx
Texas hello anyone? 🤔🥺
This is everything
I'm obsessed with the fact that Madeline was stuck in a bar for the entirety of rep era 😭
😂😭
Hahaaa
I was a bit BAMBOOZLED like what the hell happened to Zach's haircut. Then I realized its just an old episode. You need to stop jump scaring me
LMAOOO
Bye that’s so real 😭
I was sat on my lunch break from my very busy retail job and I thought I was having an aneurysm 💀
@@theswiftologist aww I was just going to comment how handsome your new haircut looks lol! 😘
fr tho
I just realised that in "...Ready for it?" when Taylor says : "And he can be my jailer", she unknowingly predicted how her relationship with Joe is going to be...
but then she broke free, fresh out the slammer
Omg...
*fresh out the summer
@@theswiftologist is the freshoutthesummerologist
@@theswiftologist That will never not be funny!
@@theswiftologistand this is the real footnote
taylor saying “i’m doing better than i ever was” is the same energy as cassie from euphoria saying “i’ve never been happier” LMAO
LOL
she was literally giving “and you can all judge me all you want but i do NOT care!!!!!!!”
exactly
The Euphoria main pop girlies/dudes as Taylor eras
Cassie: reputation, Rue: folklore, Jules: Midnights, Elliot (Dominic Fike shoutout): evermore, Maddie Perez: 1989 TV, Lexi: Speak Now TV, Kat: Red stolen version, Fez: Tortured Poets, Nate Jacobs: Bleachella, Gia: Debut, Faye: Fearless stolen version
"trust him like a brother" traumatizes such an amazing song i cant even 😭
them saying reputation tv was imminent...and then literally 2 days later was the ttpd announcement 💀
we knew something was coming lsdflnsdjfds
You got clocked !!!!! You were clowns tooo@@theswiftologist
Zach and Madeline might not know this, but their contents and personality are my confidence boosters. The sass, the honesty, the wit, and their clever comments are everything.
literally.
same
Yesss same here!!
As a non-swiftie, I missed all the taylore until pre-Midnights, so it's bizarre to me that Reputation was so coldly received. It's so memorable and interesting both sonically and visually. This is probably the only TV I'm genuinely impatient for.
VERY VERY late but for anyone wondering "There will be no explanation there will just be reputation" came from the CD booklet and vinyl sleeve
Thank you!
no christmas dinner can compare to the food we just received 🙏🏼
well yes!!!! gobble it up diva
No crumbs left, dolls.❤
We eating goooood this Xmas 🐍
the way i thought you were trying to re-do your 2017 hair for this episode .. i fr said “wow hes really committed to the bit!” I APOLOGIZE
LMAOOOOO
I think Taylor should release Rep tv as soon as possible because public sentiment is changing. For two years she’s been America’s sweetheart again, the most beloved popstar. Now the public and the media seem to be showing clear and obvious signs of tayfatigue. The best thing she could’ve hoped for was for the world to be exactly how it was when she first released Rep to maximize the vibe, and somehow it is.
I think there could be a strategic reason to not do it for a couple of months though. Right now everything is indeed saturated with TS. The anticipation for RepTv remained high through the end of the tour. But we know the public and media are fickle and have short memories. With the tour ending, football ending in less than 2 months, and the likelihood that her Grammy wins will be less comprehensive than she probably would hope, attention will fade away a bit from the public at large. So if she announces RepTV in Feb, it will hype her up again. And/or announcing a doc or whatever she is doing with the Vancouver footage…it will revive attention & focus that will have naturally waned after the tour ending, assuming no new album is coming. Announcing Rep (or Debut) TV in a couple of months brings her back into getting some publicity but in a way that doesn’t require doing a ton of work in the present time. Low effort way to swing the spotlight back onto her. Girl does love the positive attention & is aware that releasing those albums will cause a nice surge of happy Swifties chattering all over the place.
Just my musings. I will look forward to both albums whenever she drops them.
I remember when Look What You Made Me Do dropped-critics and haters were quick to mock it. But I also recall this strange, hesitant approval bubbling under the surface. Everyone was like, "Wait, does this actually kind of rock?" but nobody wanted to say it out loud because, at the time, Taylor was still publicly 'canceled.'
Back in 2017, I was nearing the end of my clubbing era, but that weekend, it was everywhere-every party, every dance floor. I heard it like half a dosen times. And people were trying to act cool, like they were only into it 'ironically.' But I could tell it hit.
I remember this exactly and I was still a bit of a TS outsider at this point.
I can’t tell if I’m misremembering or was just deluded but at the time I thought that EVERYONE loved rep…I was listening to it daily 😂
@@jillsarah7356 I was obsessed with the album and also listened to it constantly. I just remember all the hate for it because it was so confusing
Taylor heard "No poetry please," and said here's an album called The Tortured Poets Department 😂
Realizing who she wrote IDWLF about is bittersweet after seeing how that all played out in the end. She ended up doing both, dodging a bullet and losing the lohl.
the oldhaircutologist???? honestly a serve
lmaoooo
I love how we swiftologistologist ologist everything 😭

50:33 When she lifts the bikes in the video, I take it as her going: "I made Big Machine, I alone am lifting this whole label" and what a power move 👏🏻
interesting read!!
Also, she lifts two of them, and in a way that's kinda trashing them... It may be a reference to that video of Kim and the Klown in a motorcycle from forever ago?....
Tell 'em how the snakes went wild whenever Switologist drops an EOAS episode. Grabbin' a snack rn
and i do hope you shine ........... period!
Drop everything down
2:07 rep tv episode coming "sooner than you think because it's imminent"... so how do we feel about this now LMAO
bad. we feel bad
I remember the first time I heard Look What You Made Me Do, I was gagged, I fell in love immediately. I still can’t believe people didn’t love it from the start.
Zach asking if he can bring his cigarettes to the secret sessions just took me out 💀
ZACHS OLD HAIR HELP
its been 84 years....
He's not beating the baldologist allegations... 😔
@LimeSlimeeeLMAOOOO THE LORE OF THIS MAN
I can't like that- theres 84 likes on it, and i wont destroy the time-space continuum like that. @theswiftologist
1989 and Midnights were made for the general public. Reputation and TTPD were made for the swifties. It's so funny how Midnights era success and hysteria directly mirrors the success and hysteria of the 1989 era. Both incredibly successful albums, tours, a highly publicized relationship, and an album of the year win. And what directly followed those eras was a polarizing album that wasn't well received at the time of its release but became cult classics. Taylor went out of her way to recapture her Gatsby year.
I did not know y’all have been doing these since way back or else I would’ve been tuned in. I definitely was on tumblr since 2012 following along with the Taylor fandom from time to time. This is such a nice refresher
omg the absolute jumpscare u gave me with that haircut i almost screamed
reputation after christmas yeassssss!!! merry Christmas and happy holidays zach and everyone!!
its not christmas without a little bit of reputation....
The ironic thing was "Burton to this Taylor" was foreshadowing hardcore since they were also a disaster couple
the Look What You Made Me Do music video was so iconic! I as a wee lad long before I started listening to Taylor Swift remember being shown the music video by some other child and loving the music video. it's iconic
I’m so happy to come in and see this Christmas morning! We are certainly being fed! Thank you so much, Zach and Madeleine!
You’re very welcome!! xx
@ oh my goodness! You get a “like“ from the Swift is like getting a present on Christmas morning!
the HAIR, THE FIT, THE MAKEUP....OHHH AND THE TOPIC OF THE POD!!!!SOOO SLAY. LET'S GO!!!!🐍
What’s insane is I was never a swiftie, I’m still not (I’m here for the vibes) and at a time I was a hater but I remember EVERYTHING and where I was during reputation. I was present, I remember watching the video, I remember the teaser, I was there! I’m a rep girlie despite not being a swiftie, truly a time you had to live through
Have I listened to this on the podcast multiple times? Well yes. Will I watch with visuals? WELL YES. Merry Snakemas 🐍🎄🫶
I was 19 and just moved to Australia in august of 2017. I didn’t have wifi at home, i stayed late at work to watch the music video. And immediately fell in love
The different kinds of bleeps for you guys cussing is taking me out lol
Why are they bleeped this time? I don’t remember this always being the case.
I first heard "Look What You Made Me Do" at a Great Clips and my jaw dropped to the floor! It was THE COOLEST thing I ever heard and I mean that 100%.
I've listened on Spotify a couple of times, and now there are visuals?? Santa-ologist ❤ Merry Christmas to the Snakes 🐍 💚
merry christmas!! xx
51:00 Well, Taylor with the motorcycles reminds of the photo of Britney Spears in a motorcycle, in the Blackout booklet. Cuz in a lot of ways, Reputation has a Blackout vibe in how dark and unapologetic she is.
"Another day, another drama"
I mean, LWYMMD was Piece Of Me (Taylor's Version).
You are so right!
And let's not forget that reputation started the social media blackout before everyone else did that.
Zach just want to say that your channel has significantly improved over the last couple years. Love your vids!
I love the going on about not wanting poetry from Taylor and then there being a whole poets album announced right after this came out. 😂
Loving this editing style honestly!
king tyler!!
God this podcast is my biggest comfort source
You guys are sooo funny. I always laugh out loud while I watch you. Merry Christmas from Colombia!
merry christmas!! xx
1:30:50 CIWYW is my #1 favorite Taylor song. The first time I heard it I thought she had finally found the one and truly healed from all of the vitriol the world threw at her. Turns out that wasn't the case, but luckily the sentimental feeling of the song hasn't changed for me.
Also, I hope she changes the brother line for RepTV.
The cherry on the top is that by some miracle you guys quoted one of my favorite songs ever (and it's not even by Taylor!). 'There is a Light that Never Goes Out' is probably my most cherished Smiths song -- and it's almost impossible to find a Smiths (or Morrissey) song I don't love.
the debutation clowning at the start...literally cricket 😭
I wish she would've stuck to the darker & more mature rep aesthetic for at least one more album. It was so alluring .The switch up to the brighter aesthetic for Lover is what made the album so underwhelming for me on the first listen.
Don't Blame Me is truly a masterpiece and I hope and pray you come to your senses
Last year when i started learning more about all the lore i watched a lot of music videos and stuff obviously. Something that struck me a little bit was how many rooms are in this video, shes constantly going into complete different rooms; and it's like a giant dramatic excessive mansion. I felt like it was a spin off of the Blank Space mansion. In Blank Space she was basically addressing and using a lot of the perceptions of her, to her artistic liberty and advantage too, one of those themes is like the rich rich trophy girl. Even if these two connections of the mansion/rooms werent meant to be interpreted together, the vibe still checks out and is basically cohesive.
Omg y’all upload so much now I’m behind, being a listener since 2019 I used to pray for times like these
22:33 note that since ME!, she has not released a single ahead of the album, making it virtually impossible for her lead singles to not hit #1
What you're missing is that she was also watching Game of Thrones around this time.
There was GoT things on was it a jacket with pins she released for an EW promo I think.
Anyways this is all to say that Call It What You Want and Look What You Made Me Do have some GoT inspirations.
I just randomly realized Madeline resembles Avril. Has she ever gotten this? Maybe it’s the straight hair, black shirt and makeup in this video??
THANK YOU FOR THE VISUALS ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Recalls having chapped lips on Fulton st....then cuts to putting on chapstick subconsciously just moments later 🤣🤣🤣
Thank you EOAS for this Christmas present
2:17:08 YESSS ZACH!
I admire the way you let the Tayvis shippers clown but sometimes they do too much and I have to resist the urge to remind them about Taylor's spring/summer of 2016. But it's better to let them learn their own lesson about getting too attached and living vicariously through Taylor.
Honestly at least they’re together- I cannot stand the joe stans who won’t let him go like he d*ed or something 😭 making sad edits etc. like ladiessssss let it go!
this is one of the best and more funny, unhinged videos of yours jajaja im just laughing working and feeling great just to hear you
Gorgeous is my favorite Taylor Swift song ever. I sang it to my baby niece because she was born shortly after.
It's always interesting how that works. I have 2 toddlers and they're favorite Taylor songs are ME and shake it off. Not my favorite songs to say the least - but watching my 2 kiddos ask for these songs daily for their dance parties gives these songs a special place in my heart.
@ I so agree. We may not rank some songs as our favorites, but the kiddies love them. That’s the beauty of Taylor Swift. She knows how to get our attention. Then we listen to the other stuff and that’s where the really good stuff is.
Thank you for reminding me So it Goes exists! I’ve had it off the tracklist on my phone along with Look What You Made Me Do for years and somehow totally forgot about it
was halfway into the video until i realized this was an old recording i’ve literally listened too
still ate though
1:19:22 I’m from Australia, I was headed to My High School, And I hear This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things on the Radio but I didn’t know it was Taylor until 2 days later when the album dropped so I was Shooketh when that leaked early
The whole era was the highlight of my exchange year in the States lmao
I’m in my rep era right now and this couldn’t have come at a more perfect time
not the New Year's Day hate! that's my favorite song from Reputation and one of my favorite Taylor Swift songs!
"please don't ever become a stranger whose laugh I could recognize anywhere"
NYD reminds me of every major life moment I've ever had. It evokes nostalgia in me. Love that song so much
Yes, Joseph Khan directed Toxic too. It was Britney's treatment tho.
I was going through my “I don’t listen to mainstream music anymore!1!1!1” phase so I didn’t see the posts leading up to Reputation but I heard she deleted everything. I do remember I was working making pizzas when the radio premiere of LWYMMD happened and it literally had me stopped dead in my tracks and I was INSTANTLY pulled back in. I always say reputation changed my life cause it did I’ll never forget what I was wearing and where I was 😩 when the album came out it was all I listened too
they hated Jesus too is the most swiftie thing ive ever heard spoken and im here for it!
Madeline, I was so excited thinking maybe I would finally hear you make post-TTPD connections to songs on Reputation... then I realized this video was from before TTPD released so any opinions stated here were made without the knowledge of Chloe or Sam and the 10 years of swirling him into all her poems (I just listened to your podcast ep on Chloe et al and you seemed to set a boundary on when the swirling could apply, and there was no mention of reputation at all.) According to an assistant, she wrote Ready For It on the plane during the 1989 tour, so before she met Joe. And with the robbers reference and the description of the song inspiration being almost the same as the inspiration for Robbers, I'm pretty confident Matty is the main muse for that song. I'd really enjoy an updated take on reputation in light of TTPD revelations.
This Episode gave me EVERYTHING I needed. I dont know everything like Zach or Madeline but I'll sit and learn!🙌🐍
I'm so excited to see your outfits for sneras tour and Madeline's eye looks girlssss
perioddddd
Great to see a new video for my fave era ! Hope you both had a brilliant Christmas! 😊 x
wait oh naur am i the only one that thought in the taylor mountain scene it was a neon cross 💀 it makes so much more sense that it’s a T
I think her lifting the two bikes signifies that she lifted and basically made BIG MACHINE RECORDS successful! just a thought, i'm going with it :)
"This is what the neo-Nazi said..." I giggled
So blessed to hole up in my room and watch 2 hours of Taylor's best era!! 🖤🐍
I remember being so happy yet mad when the music video came out bc I was like seeing this all at once with hearing the song for the first time would've been CRAZY and I wish that was the experience we all had
DWOHT has both Oscar Holter and Max Martin who then did Blinding Lights, and I’ll just say this…. they clearly took some inspiration from the former.
Listening to this for the second time and chuckling along with you guys the whole way through. "Moose vibes" 😂😂
lknsdflnskd i forgot about moose vibes
LWYMMD music video was so overshadowing of Katy Perry, that I literally forgot she hosted the VMAs until now LOL
Just as I've made my coffee, perfect timing, thank you!
Btw when was this filmed? I'm trying to figure it out from the clues, I thought it was a couple of years ago, but when you mentioned Kamala it confused me even more
it was filmed earlier this year! wayyy before the election lol
I remember an interview where Taylor said “There will be no explanation. There will just be Reputations.” It might have happened after the release, though. I found it. She says it on the Ellen show after the release. I think she might be promoting Lover. I didn’t finish watching the clip.
Does Zach know the popularity of college football in the United States? Especially Georgia, Florida and Alabama. This was also a period of disillusionment with the nfl. American college football is HUGE.
Ohhh, We have been needing this!!!!
just what i needed for christmas
It’s not a true EOAS video without the mention of Cruel Summer being robbed of the first single!
the way you kept saying gorgeous in a british accent is SENDINGGF ME
For the car crash scene in the 'Look What You Made Me Do' music video, I heard someone say that she was driving a Maserati and that it resembled the red album of the year snub. What are your thoughts on that theory?
That makes so much more sense than our current theories regarding that scene.
The much awaited Christmas present!!!
obsessed with the theme that madeline was so unbothered during the rep area 😂😂😂😂
“I was once again…at the bar” 😂
I went to check bc I had an inkling and indeed, Jon Caramanica wrote the NY Times reputation review. Reputation is actually his favorite Taylor album, he’s talked at length on his podcast (called Popcast) about being swayed by public opinion and not rating rep as high as he would have liked to, and how he’s excited about rep tv coming out so it can get the flowers it deserves!
I don’t by any stretch enjoy all of his taylor opinions (he famously dislikes folklore whereas im a folklore girl) but to have such a front facing music critic talking so openly and seriously about taylor sice debut has always felt reassuring (nowadays ofc no one can question the powerhouse that is taylor but it was not always the case). I would recommend checking out the Popcast episode in which him and another critic rank all taylor albums!
Are you kidding me? Haircut is slaying, boots the house DOWN.
^^^
its an older video so thats why his hair is different
@sabrinasdivas tyty
I'm so glad I found y'all 😂
I desperately hope there's a solo mix of Endgame in the vault tracks on Rep TV
Is Madeline drinking a Coors Light? While talking about always being in a bar during Reputation? Haha iconic
I was listening to this episode on spotfy literally today!! Haha
Thank you for this TREAT ❤
You are very welcome!!
The key to understanding Ready for It is knowing the director and how much of an anime weeb he is.
Why must you upload new videos in the middle of the night? And am I truly going to watch this 2 hour and 30 min episode at 12:30am?
well yes...
