metalhead360 Frances (who I've seen perform on B'day) is truly the very best. Great voice, but more than that, are the emotions with which she sings. And she created the role at it's very first conception (except French version). SIMPLY, THE BEST!

Wow her voice is incredible! It has this quirky, interesting tone and there is such vulnerability in her voice, but at the same time it can be incredibly strong and passionate. It's perfect for this song!
I absolutely adore Frances' version. It'll always be my personal On My Own. I don't really care as much about the technical singing talents here (though I do love brilliant singers!) because to me that's not as much what this is about. This is about the pure, unadulterated emotion, the absolutely incomparable agony of unrequited love, something I have faced in full-blown, excruciating misery. The way Frances does it brings me to tears. I feel her pain. I know that pain. And she knows it perfectly. She FEELS it. This song makes me feel, brings me an emotional connection to her. And that's why I love this.
Album: Les Miserables: Original Broadway Cast Recording And now I'm all alone again Nowhere to go, no one to turn to Did not want your money sir I came out here cos' I was told to And now the night is near I can make believe he's here Sometimes I walk alone at night When everybody else is sleeping I think of him and then I'm happy With the company I'm keeping The city goes to bed And I can live inside my head On my own Pretending he's beside me All alone I walk with him till morning Without him I feel his arms around me And when I lose my way I close my eyes And he has found me In the rain the pavement shines like silver All the lights are misty in the river In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight And all I see is him and me forever and forever And I know it's only in my mind That I'm talking to myself and not to him And although I know that he is blind Still I say, there's a way for us I love him But when the night is over He is gone The river's just a river Without him The world around me changes The trees are bare and everywhere The streets are full of strangers I love him But every day I'm learning All my life I've only been pretending Without me His world would go on turning A world that's full of happiness That I have never known I love him I love him I love him But only on my own.
Eponine is by far my favourite character from les miserables. I fell like so much of her story was left untold, she was so much more than the scorned love-interest.
Read the book even though it's a million pages long. I listened to the audio version and I think it was something like 60 CDs, lol. But it goes into detail and everything including Eponine's background and her connection to all the other characters
Jeff Basically, if I get introduced to a musical, there's a pretty high chance that I'm going to love it. Doesn't matter what genre-I just appreciate musicals.
I've always thought 3:16 - 3:21 on this particular recording was THE best portion of this song ever sung. I love Frances' vibrato on those hard "e" sounds. Some will say it is too nasal, but I think it absolutely makes the song - the haunting "ring" in the nasal voice and vibrato there is so powerful to me. It makes you believe she's in agony. No other singer I've heard has been able to do that, probably because it's really hard to do vocally and probably not "technically correct.
Okay, so I have not seen the movie yet, but I've read the book, and I absolulely am in love with this song. Eponine is just my favorite. There is no one like her in her struggle, and this version hails as #1 because the emotion of her struggle is breathtaking.
I saw Les Mis for the first (and only) time the year before I went to high school, and the school was putting it on. I basically begged my mom to let us go and then after about the first 5 minutes, she loved it. This song is one of our favorites from the show, and I got this album pretty much the next day. About a year later, when I went to that high school, mom thanked the girl who played Eponine (sorry if that's wrong spelling) for singing such a beautiful song.
Despite all the talented people who played Eponine, Frances was, and always will be, the one for me who most completely captured the pure emotion of the role.
I like this version it's like you are staring at the window while crying, and just depressed. I really really like how the actresses interpreted Eponine in different ways.
Oh my god, I have been searching and searching for this version forever! My mom had the original cassette tape (you know that was a long time ago) but it became damaged and I loved this version. Not a fan of the other versions, and I finally found it. Thank you!
this is hands down my favorite performance. I prefer it even to Lea Salonga, Samantha Barks. While those women’s performances are more technically “correct” and pristine, I think Frances Ruffle’s “imperfect” take conveys much more of the vulnerability, youth and tragedy, which Eponine is supposed to embody
The first time I heard this song was at singing class.... A woman was singing it, and even though I am a man, I was close to crying... It was so beautiful!
Like sometimes I feel that in musicals, the lyrics are soo perfectly attuned to emotions and what the play is about that these song writers must have feltsuch pain, or joy, or sorrow in their lives. Theirs just soo perfect.
This is beautiful. I actually hadn't heard her until recently, as I grew up with the 'full orchestrated version'. I love the Eponine on there, but Frances is great too. I did a cover of this song (I posted a video) and wish I'd had more time to listen to this version before I did so. Some great stuff.
24 people disliked this? How can this be? This is one of the most beautiful and heart wrenching songs ever written. Not to mention it is sung immaculately. I will never understand people.
After watching the movie I came straight here to listen to the beautiful London Cast Original. I LOVE THE MOVIE but no one can beat this. (My opinion don't hate me)
Not, really she is not even friend zone. She is comes from a despicable and her intentions were actually despicable. She keep the letter and lured Marius to die at the barricade! Yes, she saved him for the fact that she could bear to see him die, but she thought he was going to die there. So, it was if I can't have you no one can! lol The damn book has been out for over 200 years, so there's nothing to spoil you should have read it by now.
I have to do this song for my GCSE. It's such a fabulous song, can't believe I never heard of it! Need to stop listening to chart music : /. Going to watch the play now :DDDDD
I have to say, maybe it's just because I heard this CD first...but I enjoy the London cast so much more than any others. This is the best version hands down =)
I see a bit of conversation over whose interpretation of Epiphone is best, Frances, or Lea Salonga. I have heard Lea sing this with a great deal of feeling and intensity, so I know she does incorporate the sadness, the deep hope, the broken deam, the heart ache, the longing. Nevertheless, I enjoy having both to listen to, the original London Epiphone - Frances, and the extremely gifted Lea Salonga and her wonderful voice and expressiveness.
Jeez, why is everyone arguing about who is better? That's what's so awesome about music. There's many ways a song can be interpreted. I love Lea's anger and passion as much as I love Frances' longing and weariness of life in this cover.
saw the movie last night, been desperate to see it on stage for a few years though. this version of this song is much more beautiful and emotional than the one from the movie. i was expecting more from Samantha Barks after being totally in love with this version
Even as a proud American, I have to give this to the London cast. I always think the original cast does a better job anyway. Her voice is so expressive without being overdramitic! It's so lovely! (and so sad)
I simply don't know why some people are bitching over whether or not Les Mis' is a stage show or a concert,or that the book is 1000 plus pages. It's popularity is evident in that it's celebrated 25 years recently.Surely millions of people around the globe having seen it,some more than once, is testament to it's attraction! And maybe some people will be encouraged to read the book,so it will have served that purpose too.I've seen it 3 times & it's appeal is undiminished for me.
OH YES, this is the only version of this song, the others may be "good enough" but this is just THE BEST, saw her a couple of times in the production in London, how lucky was I.
Too Disney! Perfectly put. Technically beautiful isn't necessarily better, especially in a musical like this. Frances was the original choice for the TAC... I would have loved to see her on stage.
ForkskindaDay -- This is the original London cast version from the actual musical score ( re. the beginning lyrics ) - I think the other lyrics were written for the International Recording and/or Broadway version :)
THIS is the definitive version, the pathos, the sincerity, the talent, and the accuracy
I absolutely adore Francis Ruffelle's voice.
Its so unique and genuine. I love the innocence that she brings to the character
metalhead360 Frances (who I've seen perform on B'day) is truly the very best. Great voice, but more than that, are the emotions with which she sings. And she created the role at it's very first conception (except French version). SIMPLY, THE BEST!
metalhead360 Really meant to say that when Frances sings, passion oozes out of her tiny frame & throat. No faking the high notes either.

My favorite version. So genuine and so pure.
Mark Han it’s not close.

I love this version of this song, she gets so much emotion into her voice it's heartbreakingly beautiful
Hands down favorite performance of this song. Her voice has a certain grit and depth that her successors lack. I buy her pain.
This is the best version and always will be. Period.
I love her sweet voice and the emotive quality of expressing the essence of the song.
Album: Les Miserables: Original Broadway Cast Recording
And now I'm all alone again
Nowhere to go, no one to turn to
Did not want your money sir
I came out here cos' I was told to
And now the night is near
I can make believe he's here
Sometimes I walk alone at night
When everybody else is sleeping
I think of him and then I'm happy
With the company I'm keeping
The city goes to bed
And I can live inside my head
On my own
Pretending he's beside me
All alone
I walk with him till morning
Without him
I feel his arms around me
And when I lose my way I close my eyes
And he has found me
In the rain the pavement shines like silver
All the lights are misty in the river
In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight
And all I see is him and me forever and forever
And I know it's only in my mind
That I'm talking to myself and not to him
And although I know that he is blind
Still I say, there's a way for us
I love him
But when the night is over
He is gone
The river's just a river
Without him
The world around me changes
The trees are bare and everywhere
The streets are full of strangers
I love him
But every day I'm learning
All my life
I've only been pretending
Without me
His world would go on turning
A world that's full of happiness
That I have never known
I love him
I love him
I love him
But only on my own.
Natalie Meyer oh, i just practiced it so i just add the lyrics on here.
Thank you for this!
You're Welcome!! :)
I love frances, lea, sam and carrie. No need for hate. All of them are great with their own way! I love all of them.
Thank you. And I doubt they want to hear it either.
This has always been my favorite version of this song. In fact, this entire album is my favorite.
Eponine is by far my favourite character from les miserables. I fell like so much of her story was left untold, she was so much more than the scorned love-interest.
100% agree
Read the book even though it's a million pages long. I listened to the audio version and I think it was something like 60 CDs, lol. But it goes into detail and everything including Eponine's background and her connection to all the other characters
Her voice is so unique. I love it
Dear God, I love musicals.
what kind of musicals?
Jeff Basically, if I get introduced to a musical, there's a pretty high chance that I'm going to love it. Doesn't matter what genre-I just appreciate musicals.
Hawk Talon How about the movie musicals? Begin Again? Sing Street?
Eponine Thenardier Like I said. I like musicals.
i was there. her voice and performance are simply to fall in love with. Bravo!
Definitely the best version of On My Own. Never getting tired of this song. Musicals live on!
I've never heard an interpretation like this in a musical. this is simply stunning!

This song really give me goosebumps. It's so beautiful.
such a gorgeous song!
she sings with such emotion, especially the final "i love him"s. absolutely spectacular!
this song is absolutely gorgeous and the play is wonderful

There have been many talented singers that have played this role. But this version is my favourite
Every time I hear Frances sings this song or a little fall of rain. she always makes me wanna cry. her voice speaks emotions to me.
her celestial voice always calms me down whenever i feel stressed out
really love her voice!
Simply breathtaking!
I like this version it's like you are staring at the window while crying, and just depressed. I really really like how the actresses interpreted Eponine in different ways.
This is by FAR the best version of this song, in my opinion :D
So beautiful. I love this song.

Any version of this makes me cry

Frances' original London recording, to me, set the gold standard for this song.
After watching the movie I came straight here to listen to the beautiful London Cast Original. I LOVE THE MOVIE but no one can beat this. (My opinion don't hate me)
The movie version was shockingly crap, it's nowhere near this level of pathos, sincerity, and talent
Agreed
Most perfect song ever. I will only listen to this woman sing it. Everyone else is below subpar.
this incredible original London cast song would always bring me back to the fall of 2006.
I loved that musical
This is my favourite version. :)
Had such a good cry, I needed that.
my favorite play...and one of the best songs.......gosh i love this
Iv loved the les mis music for ages and we went to see it on stage last october. this is deffo my favourite song.
absoloutley beautiful...
I like the innocent quality of her voice
My favourite song from the musical, it's so beautiful, can't stop listening to it
Love this version
This has been my favorite version of this song for years. All the others just can not compare. :(
wonderful song. fantastic musical. I only hope that the film will do the show justice.
So this is the Friendzone national anthem?
John D. Lol. There's more to it than that (mostly in the book) but basically yes.
Not, really she is not even friend zone. She is comes from a despicable and her intentions were actually despicable. She keep the letter and lured Marius to die at the barricade! Yes, she saved him for the fact that she could bear to see him die, but she thought he was going to die there. @@PikachusKetchup might as well tell the damn story. You can't spoil a book that has been out for almost 200 fucking years. shit.
Lol
😅😂
Best version EVER.
I love the intro, beautiful and simple cor anglais solo. Atmospheric to say the least. Bravo John Cameron
I agree, this is the first and the best Eponine, for me also. Brilliant
This has always been and always will be my favourite version of them all
Forgot how amazing this version was!
Best version. Perfection.
My school choir is singing a medly of songs from Les Miserables, and this is one of the ones that they are best at.
best version
im singing this for my high school talent show and its going to be AMAZING!! =)
This is the best version hands down =)
I used to feel the opposite..... but this song convinced me. While Lea does have a strong voice, this singer captured the emotion
my favorite version!
the second part is the best! wish me luck!
I love Frances Ruffelle's softer voice (though none less intense), I think she makes a perfect Eponine =)
The most book-verse version I've heard so far!
I don't understand why people hate this musical
Must keep on repeat.
I see a bit of conversation over whose interpretation of Epiphone is best, Frances, or Lea Salonga.

The only thing I like better in the broadway version is Who Am I, Wilkinson nails the last note better in that version
omg, this is the best On my Own performance i have ever heard!!
I love her 😍
I love you
Best version!
omg i luv this song
now that i listen to this song again i like it.
It's so beautiful.
Seeing Les Mis on wednesday! So excited it's unreal!!
pretty song. I love it
im not crying its just raining on my face
