- Rob Halford! Vocalist of Judas Priest, is known to be the father, or one of the fathers of heavy metal. Named by many as the god of metal, he competes with Black Sabbath and Dio.
His characteristic style of singing influenced many artists during the 80s and 90s
He started singing when was a teenager in local Hard Rock bands while working as a lighting assistant in theater, which allowed him to cover the expenses.
In 1973, Halford meets Ian Hill, a bassist of Judas for being his sister's boyfriend. After listening to him sing, and in the absence of a vocalist, Ian proposed the task to Halford.
Even though nowadays is known that Halford is gay, Judas Priest was known to use a very masculine stereotype with leather jackets and motorbikes.
After years of hard shows, Judas Priest went up the step little by little, reaching the 80's as a revolutionary band for the culture of that time.
All this supposed some tear on the vocal cords of the vocalist, in addition to the age, much is discussed about his dubious technique.
With the material found we have almost 45 years of trayectory. Great for the demonstration of progress in their performance, and of course, for them to find what would be their highest point, and where the descent begins.
as always ... It is very interesting to see how the years go by in people, how they deal with problems, changes of styles and stereotypes in the world, and despite everything, year after year they continue in heavy metal. I think it is a clear example of caring for the vocation.
Halford figure 2 in the list of the best metal vocalists of all time according to an American magazine called Hit Parader.

That's the reason why I consider "Painkiller" probably the biggest metal album ever. Even in 1991 he couldn't sing songs like "Night Crawler" and of course "Painkiller" with ease. Halford is probably the singer who kept his voice alive better than any other singer of the genre, considering the range that he sings! Saw him in 2018 and he killed some songs like "Sinner" which go all the way back to the 70's. So, don't judge from "Painkiller" it's a real nightmare to sing live, but this guy is really special for having that voice at the age of 68. Aside from being a legend you have to be smart and techniqual to sing like this for so many years.
Honestly, I think Painkiller wrecked him. Saw them live on 2 consecutive nights ( Portland, Me, then in Providence, RI) he couldn't get over the top with Electric Eye, so he changed up on the fly very sucessfully. Singers like Axl that always have to force it, never get the note live. Guys like Glenn Hughes never lose it, more natural voice.
Also--- when they START the tours, it's STANDARD tuning until he can't handle it. And his downtuned is still more impressive than anyone trying to cover him! 😁I've seen Halford a couple times in recent years, and he adjusts accordingly to how he's feeling within the tour schedule. Believe me..He STILL has it .

So true! Listening to the 83 US festival lineup, no vocalist comes close! I even think they sounded better than Van Halen which I respect highly and was featured as the star attraction. Granted VH isn’t metal but David lee Roth is respected as a great singer/frontman. Halfords power and stage presents are incredible!

still brilliant playing, and priest live (the album) kicks arse - probably the best version of breaking the law - but turbo was pretty shit, the introduction of they synthisisers was a bad move, very anti-metal.
Ram it down had some good stuff, but it really steered away from their blues rock/hard rock/old school metal style, and went into thrash metal. Probably just not quite my cup of tea, but other than the johnny b goode cover, and maybe monsters of rock and the title track, pretty average stuff
painkiller is an elite tune, and so is metal meltdown, but the album for the most part was similar to ram it down, just generic, not memorable or iconic (other than painkiller of course, and i think metal meltdown has some incredible riffs).
They peaked with screaming for vengence and defenders of the faith, such cool guitar tones, and still blurring the lines between rock and metal, which i personally love
Siempre ha tenido n registro ibcreible. En ram it down, painkiller y el primero de figth creo que fue donde mas alto llegó. La gente dice que ya no es lo que era....el tiempo pasa para todos, y alguien como Halford que siempre cantó en tonos tan altos, ahora con sus 66 años es nornal que no llegue a los tonos de cuando tenia 30. Para mi es el mejor vocalista de heavy metal de la historia

Su voz sigue siendo impresionante. Pero la potencia de voz que tenia hace 35 años no es la misma. Painkiller ya lo saco en los 90 cuando ya usaba la tecnica de agachar el cuerpo. Es un gran vocalista sin dudas, supongo que no quiere decepcionar a los fans cuando canta temas brutales que ya no alcanza. Es lo mismo que Ian Gillan quiera cantar Child In Time, es imposible que a su edad alcance tal registro pero su voz da para temas muy buenos. La gente siemore quiere escuchar las mismas
Comparto lo que decís es imposible a esta edad cantar como a los 30 ...es naturaleza pura..

Gran aporte para la comunidad metalera. Gracias por este impresionante documento con el que se nos ilustra. Nada que criticar respecto al cambio de registro del Dios del Metal. Es sabido que con la edad un músico se hace más virtuoso en la ejecución de su instrumento y que un cantante pierde capacidad vocal. Halford es Historia Viva del Metal y nadie le va a superar jamás porque es un genio irrepetible.

Tuve la oportunidad de ver en vivo a Judas Priest en el pasado Hell & Heaven aquí en México, y debo reconocer que su voz no deja de impresionarme, a mi parecer es una de los vocalistas que se han mantenido en buen nivel, es impresionante escuchar esos screams agudos y muy bien controlados de su voz... mis respetos... grande Rob Halford... sin lugar a dudas uno de mis frontmann favoritos... larga vida al HEAVY METAL y a Judas Priest...

Halford is older now and his preformances are more depenent on how he's feeling day by day. But when everything is working out and he's in great shape..he still nails the old classics. Hats of for the man :)

Ive seen judas priest in vienna on april 1st 2024 and rob absoulutely killed it! How can he sing like that at the age of 72 is beyond me.
This guy is absolutely amazing. People know Ozzy, people know Dio, but people don't know Halford. They really should though! He still has an insane vocal range and has outlasted the competition. Truly somebody to be looked up to. Hopefully some new vocalists take a page from his book and push themselves to be the best

No puedo dejar de comentar que seguramente el alcoholismo, la coca y el cigarrillo influyeron bastante en el deterioro de su voz. Y esta comenzó a mejorar nuevamente al tiempo que dejó de fumar. Aun sigue siendo mi vocalista favorito (y por suerte podré verlo el próximo mes. :D)

El cigarro le dañó mucho en su periodo solista, en que fumaba durante los conciertos.
Pero desde hace unos años ha mejorado bastante después del periodo más bajo que fue en el 2008.

Soy yo el único que nota el cierto cambio de estilo a partir de 1982? Hasta entonces su voz es operística, relativamente limpia en los tonos altos, muy al estilo de Ian Gillan, por ejemplo. Pero a partir del 82 empieza a construir su voz "Painkiller", más gatuna, forzada y nasal, más agresiva, a lo Brian Johnson o Axl Rose. Coincide además con la época de Screaming for Vengeance y Defenders of the Faith, en la que de alguna forma mezclan todos los sonidos que habían experimentado hasta entonces (recordemos que en Killing Machine, British Steel y Point of Entry Rob había dejado los agudos seguidos y descomunales a lo Dreamer Deceiver a un lado para decantarse por tonos más rudos y rockeros). Por cierto, en el 88 es bru-tal.
It's not that his voice was better in the 80s than the 70s. He just knew how to use it better.

Giandome por la cronologuia de estos videos noto el inicio de su desempeño en el año 1976 y como lo mejor (el pico) en el año 1988 y el decenso en el año 2000.
Lo perores segun estos videos y segun mi opinion personal: 2004-2008-2012.
Toda mi opinion lo hago de un punto de vista critico y frio, apartando sentimientos.
Pero nuestro longevo y apreciado ROB tiene para MAS. hasta que no llegue a un nivel critico su salud no dejara su carrera.

claramente su peak mas alto fue entre 1985-1991, luego su voz empezaria a caer lentamente y mas aun entre 2003-2004, entre 2011 y 2015 pudo mejorar su performances con respecto a 2008-2009, pero claro esta que cada año que pasa su voz envejece mas, aun asi sigue siendo el METAL GOD
yo creo que en los 70 fue adaptando según el albúm de turno iba sobrado , en los 80 después de dejar las mierdas en el 88 se sale . En los 90 canta estilos distintos , yo creo que se nota a partir de 2003 como ya le cuesta un mundo llegar a esas notas que antaño las cantaba sin ninguna dificultad. En cuanto la edad los tenores y las sopranos cantan con 70 y no se nota , yo creo que no se ha cuidado lo suficiente y en el largo plazo se nota ( tabaco , drogas , alcohol)

Su peak más alto fue 76-80, luego todo lo que dices estoy de acuerdo, añadiendo que con el tour de Firepower está incluso mejor que en 2011-2015. Miralo cantando Freewheel Burning. Increible.
La gira Painkiller fue mala para alguien de su nivel. Concretamente en 1991 tuvo conciertos con interpretaciones desastrosas. Sus cuerdas vocales se recuperaron bastante a mediados de los 80 tras reabilitarse y dejar su adicción al alcohol y a las pastillas, pero las giras del Turbo y el Ram it Down fueron muy exigentes y eso unido a las tensiones por el juicio del 89, le pasaron factura. Cantar con voz de cabeza no es gritar, y en la gira painkiller era por fases lo q hacia. Al dejar Priest se fue recuperando bastante y con su banda homónima, recuperó su mejor nivel allá por el 2000, en el cual superó incluso lo mostrado en las giras de la segunda mitad de los 80 en mi opinión

Siento yo que su voz sigue siendo muy potente y con su toque que a el solo se le conoce, es normal que su voz a envejecido, en algunos videos se le escucha la voz mas cansada que en otros. Para Rob son como 50 anos de cantante o mas creo yo que por eso se le nota en ocaciones su cambio de voz. pero es y seguira siendo el Leopardo que vengo siguiendo desde 1979.

Judas Priest además de casi nunca tener un disco mediocre es una de las piedras angulares del metal. Glen Tipton fue el ídolo de Jeff Hanneman, el look, el duelo de solos, las guitarras gemelas.. lo que pides lo tienes. Glen Tipton en el concierto del screaming for vengeance tour de 1982 era el reflejo de jeff hannemman cuando empezó con slayer con sombras en los ojos a lo alice cooper.
Me atrevo a decir que Rob Halford es el mejor vocalista de metal de la historia, escuchen el registro inhumano del falseto al inicio de "Dissident Aggressor" (con el cual King Diamond sólo podría soñar) del disco Sin after sin de 1977, años antes del Melissa de los dioses Mercyful Fate, quien además participan en un tributo a Judas Priest con un cover que le faltó más punche o quizás debió escoger otro tema.
No esta demás decir que esta es una de las bandas mas longevas (empezó su carrera a inicios de los 70s con influencia de black sabbath, yes y el rock progresivo). Si ven sus declaraciones se promocionaban como una banda de rock. Judas Priest ue una inspiración para los grupos NWOBHM y luego supo reinventarse tomando influencia de las bandas NWOBHM manteniéndose en el camino una década más (1982-1990). Luego de la salida de Rob Halford y la breve incursión de Tim "the ripper" Owens, Judas Priest regresa en el nuevo milenio con un sonido definido donde más predomida el estilo del álbum painkiller.
Mejor incluso creo que es en la parte catarquica de blood red skies!!
I think it was from 1986 to 1994 when he achieved most contol of his high notes and best use of them. At the "Fight" period, he was greater than ever!
In my opinion, what happens is that most of the metal vocalists who sing high notes usually have to adjust their singing style sometime in their career and get to sing in more lower tones, with high notes there and there. Rob Halford just didnt do that. But I'm not blaming and complaining him, actually he had the guts to keep his singing style. And that's probably what costed him his range nowadays.
He wasnt high all the time in Fight ..

Probablemente el mejor cantante de metal desde siempre, y no sólo por su textura, rango, ..., y todos los parámetros y variables musicales que quieras, sino por como ha AGUANTADO hasta hoy, año 2020, con la mejor voz para esto tan duro del heavy metal sin apellido ninguno.
Yo le he visto el año pasado, dejó boquiabiertos a muchos con el Firepower, y este verano tocaba de nuevo en el Resurrection, aplazado a 2021, y seguramente siga igual. Ni numero uno, ni dos, ni tontadas de rankings, un pu.to crack.

The price for writing very technical songs is that when you get older, it's almost impossible to be yourself from 30 years ago. He aged like few did, if you listen to vocalists with a similiar age, they can't sing like the Metal God.

Arglll. Yes Rob is one of my favorite Metal singer. A particular tone of voice and climbs in the treble that can give you goosebumps (1988 memory). Even if he happens to sing wrong and have missed some concerts (we can see in this video), it remains my favorites. Whether with Fight, alone or Judas, he puts all his guts. Hat down the friend. For the voices I love, he joins Freddy Mercury, and more current (!) Devin Townsend.

Me ha gustado tu vídeo, ya que admiró mucho a Rob y eso que al principio no me gustaban tanto pero ahora valoro la voz de este estraordinario artista. La voz es un instrumento vivo y como tal es muy sensible a los cambios no solo de la edad, sino del tiempo, los hábitos, de como estés emocionalmente y sobre todo al uso que le des y como sea su correcta utilización, así que este artista siga en los más alto después tantos años es digno de admiración..

If you're a vocalist and want to sing like this into your late 60s, don't smoke or drink. Mr. Halford stopped in 86 and his vocals still sound incredible. Bruce Dickinson not so much and it's not because of his cancer. Listen to Bruce in 2000, 2008 and then 2019. You'll hear his voice decline in power and clarity. That's why you don't smoke or drink if you're a singer.

I saw him live - I think 2008 or so. The poor man couldn't even walk on the stage, let alone sing. Broke my heart.
Yet, without a doubt, one of the best metal singers who has ever walked the Earth.
Was he ill? The band's recent reviews have been good, including Halford. No one expects him to sing as a 22 year old, obviously

His voice is now shot. Without the live show sweetening from the tech guy, he might sound like Gilbert Gottfried.
Rob looked like a bad ass after painkiller. Before not so much lol. I actually like his newer stuff more. Firepower is insane and maybe better than painkiller.

Halford tuvo un periodo de decadencia del 2003 al 2010, en los que los años de excesos en cantidad de conciertos, drogas y cigarro pasaron la factura. Pero apartir del 2013 ha estado intentando nuevas técnicas que me parece han restaurado buena parte de su dinamismo y versatilidad. Incluso es evidente que sus canciones clásicas más destructivas suenan mejor después del 2015 que en el 2008.
Gran video demostrativo de como es la edad y mas en cantantes de este calibre que es de los mejores cantante de heavy metal muchas gracias.

En 1990 se ve el cambio de la voz normal, y en 1991 la voz aguda cambia,se aprecia mucho el cambio. Igualmente los 90 en adelante parece mucho mas heavy, la musica.
1994, ya empiezan los graves, y gritos Scream de (cerdo)
En los 2000s se vé en el agudo otro cambio que durará por siempre.
