I've forgotten about David Hasselhoff. Because of this episode, I decided to look up his song, Looking For Freedom. I was quite pleasantly surprised. He is a wonderful,expressive singer. I can see why Germans were so excited about his performance at the Berlin wall in 1989. It actually brought a tear to my eye, and a lump in my throat.
I was 11 years old and living in Canada in the summer of 1961 when the wall went up. My grandmother had taken my 2 year old little brother back to Germany the year before, because both my parents were working and they could not afford a good baby sitter for him here in Canada. With the Berlin Crisis now in full force, my parents were very afraid that they might never see their little son again. So the whole family went back to Germany to bring my brother home. We went on a cheap return charter flight to Germany. On the way back from Frankfurt airport, our rickety old airplane broke down 3 times. First, we barely made it to Paris, an unscheduled stop for repairs. Next, we just managed to arrive in London for more repairs. Then we were able to cross the Atlantic Ocean to arrive at a sparse military base in Goose Bay, Labrador, where the icicles from the roofs of the buildings were 6 inches in diameter and reached the ground. At last, we finally reached Toronto after a 36 hour journey from Frankfurt.
The Berlin Crisis and the Berlin wall changed the lives of many German families, including those of us in far away lands. So, when I heard David Hasselhoff singing "I've been looking for freedom from that bucket of a crane on New Year's Eve. 1989, I cried.

Wow, ich hab heute viel von Deutschlands Geschichte gelernt durch euer Video. Ich lebe schon seit 50 Jahren in den USA und hab von David Hasselhoff nur wenig mitgekriegt. Das war höchst interessant! Danke sehr, liebe Cari und Team :) Es war auch toll, den Berliner Dialekt mal wieder zu hören...hab ja von 1966-1969 in Berlin studiert.

I'm an American who STILL can't understand why DH is so popular in Germany, but I find it funny and touching that he is.
I had the same reaction when Jerry Lewis was such a huge star in France. "Really? The Nutty Professor guy who does the Labor Day telethon? He's like God in France?"
I can't understand why anyone would find Jerry Lewis to be funny.

I've never watched any shows or movies with Dave Hasselhoff, yet I've always known his name.
David Hasselhoff was popular in Germany in the 1980s before the wall came down. Knightrider was on German TV in the mid-'80s and he was a popular singer in Germany then too. Even after watching this, I still don't understand why Germans are/were crazy about him. His singing career doesn't extend to the U.S. or Canada (where I am). I have never even heard of this song that was supposedly number one on the charts (which category?) for seven weeks in the US. I can't remember the name of the song already after watching the video.
I think he was popular back then because, as I was told by a couple of Germans I knew, that he was considered to be a very good looking man (at the time). Also, having a German name may be a factor.

I was an exchange student in Germany during the 1988-89 school year and I remember some of my dorm mates asking me about/ telling me about Knight Rider - I remember the men being more into it than the women. I found that kind of amusing at the time. I was never a David Hasselhof fan myself, but my impression was that Knight Rider was something of a Magnum PI copy cat show. I had to check wiki - Magnum PI ran from 1980-1988, and Knight Rider ran from 1982-1986. That was my impression as a teenager the first time I saw Knight Rider (that it was an imitation of Magnum PI). My younger siblings watched Knight Rider, but I liked Magnum PI better - Tom Selleck's character was funnier and the show had a sense of humor, which I think made it popular. Knight Rider struck me as more serious and corny (kitschig?) even at the time.

Als ich Kind war, war ich auch ein großer Fan von Knight Rider, der "Kara Şimşek" (Schwarzer Blitz) auf Türkischübersetzt wurde.🥲 Damals hatte ich keine keine Ahnung von David Hasselhoff, weil ich mir diese Serie auf Türkisch angeschaut habe. 🤓Was mich am meisten interessierte, war das schwarze Auto auf der Serie.😅 Es faszinierte mich immer, wenn so ein Auto sprach. 😊 Von Baywatch habe ich natürlich gehört aber Pamela Anderson war viel berühmter als David Hasselhoff. 🤠 Wenn ich herausgefunden habe, dass David Hasselhoff ein Deutsche ist, fiel ich aus allen Wolken.😬 Ich glaub nicht daran , dass er eine große Rolle beim Mauerfall gespielt hat, die Menschen halten jedoch ihn in Erinnerung. 😃 Andererseits bin ich der MEinung, dass er in Deutschland nicht sehr erfolgreich gewesen wäre, als er in USA erfolgreich war. 😉 Kurz und bündig war er ein erfolgreiches Marketing von den USA.😛 Ich bin mich mit der Frau einig, er ist nämlich mittelmäßiger Schauspieler und Sänger. 🤫

I must say, I have watched many, many, Easy German videos trying to understand Germans. Just when I think I'm beginning to understand Germans, you throw this one at me! I remember David Hasselhoff when he was younger and played "Snapper Foster" on the Young and the Restless. I thought he was handsome but, I've never thought of him much more than that. You Germans are an interesting bunch. I'll never understand you but, you are interesting. That, I will give you. Hasselhoff? Wirklich?
In order to understand any people, you cannot rely on impressions from the media, which are often biased. You have to learn about their history, geography and culture from their perspective with an open mind. In other words "walk a mile in their shoes"!
Ich benutze Davids Song 'Du' im Unterricht, wenn wir Konjugation und Verbendungen lernen... Die Studenten finden das immer äußerst lustig. Wenn ihr das noch nicht kennt, dann sucht mal bei TH-cam nach diesem Lied. Bei beiden Versionen kann man sich totlachen :-)

Knight rider used to be my favourite tv show when I was a kid back in the early 90s. I really miss those days. Seeing this video is a bit of a nostalgia! Baywatch was also popular back and we used to imitate Pamela Anderson slo-mo run 🏃♀️ in school. 😀

Easy German India! Those shows were special cause like East Germany India also lived through socialist days from 1957 till 1992. Knight rider, street hawk, Baywatch, bold and the beautiful, wonder years, etc were one of the first foreign shows to appear in India after 1992! Even I used to watch German tv show called Derrick and another Krimi Serie of which i can’t remember the name. As a kid back then, it gave me a real insight of what’s happening outside India and it inspired me to travel around the world. I’m grateful and fortunate that I was able to achieve that! Thank you Cari for your videos and do visit South India soon. 😊

Easy German I just remembered the other german crime series called Inspector Rex and another cool show called Das Traumschiff! But it was broadcasted for a brief time cause most Indians here demanded more American tv shows. 😀

Wusste ich nicht dass D.Hasselhoff singt und in DE so geliebt war. Sein Nachname klingt genau wie ein Deutschname und so habe ich ein Quick-check gemacht um zu sehen ob er deutsche Herkünfte hat. Er ist in USA geboren aber sein Vorfahren sind Deutsch.

Super lustig. Ich habe dieses Lied nie gehort, und dass der "Hoff" ein Megastern in Deutschland ist hat mich furchtbar uberrascht. Er ist gar kein Star in den USA obwohl er ist ganz klar bekannt. @@yasminesteinbauer8565 tbh i think dubbing is kinda disrespectful, it replaces casts' speaking skill with somebody else's voices. It's kinda a prominent foreign singer performs a special concert but somebody covered the singer's voice with the national language's voices

Apart from that, the artists and technicians responsible for the visual design of a film might consider it just as disrespectful to cover their beautifully produced images with ugly text blocks and pay only half the attention to them because you're just reading all the time.
We also have pretty good dubbing actors in Germany, which I sometimes even like better than the original voices.

Yes, David Hasselhoff IS famous in America for being famous in Germany. He is considered a second rate actor and the show was mostly watched because everyone was running around in bikinis and tight men’s swimming trunks.
The show was like a b grade horror film where the acting is so bad that it’s watched for that reason as a joke.

Ich als Syrer finde ich ihn sehr berühmt. Seine TV-Serie Knight Rider war damals die meist beliebte Serie in Syrien.

Es ist schlimm genug, dass die Amis das alle fälschlicherweise glauben. Fans von irgendwelchen Interpreten gibt es überall, Hasselhoff ist KEINE Sensation in Deutschland.
Er bedeutet den Deutschen gar Nichts. Er hat Fans, aber bitte verallgemeinert doch nicht so schamlos. Ich kann ihn nicht leiden und kenne persönlich keinen in meinem persönlichen Umkreis, der ihn mag.
