  • This film depicts how wake turbulence is formed, the hazards it presents to aircraft-particularly those in the process of landing or taking off and suggests techniques in avoiding the effects of this phenomena. The nature and strength of wind tip vortices are vividly shown by the use of multicolored smoke grenades installed on towers adjacent to the runway.

I love watching these old FAA films, and then running the N numbers, to see how many are still in service.

Thanks 2degreewca, for all the postings of these gems. You must have been a FAA local office regular.

I first saw this film when I worked at Los Angeles Center as a Computer Programmer in 1975.

I saw this as a film at an EAA chapter meeting in the 90’s. It features an airplane an airplane I now own, a Piper Tri-Pacer...

True enough. I made numerous trips to the Tulsa GADO during the years I worked for Spartan School of Aeronautics in the late 70's.

I wonder when we’re going to see the FAA training film on when it’s recommended to wear headsets. Come to think of it. How many of these pilots who may still be alive are wearing Beltones.

Don't hold your breath on that. Your question will fall on deaf ears. Literally. I started flying in the late 60s and practically no one wore hearing protection. I know, dumb. But I'm not wearing Beltones. Too pricey. I wear a cheaper brand.

I'm in college studying to become a pilot and it's crazy to me how the FAA still uses 11+ year old videos as official training lol.

This video is older than that. I first saw this 16mm film as a newly minted CFI back in 1974 making it at least 50 years old. Wake turbulence is wake turbulence so this film is still relevant whether you're in a 1959 Piper Tri-Pacer or a 2024 Piper Archer DLX.
