  • In the 1850s tens of thousands of Chinese people flocked to Victoria, joining the peoples from all nations who came here chasing the lure of gold.
Fleeing violence, famine and poverty in their homeland Chinese goldseekers sought fortune for their families in the place they called ‘New Gold Mountain’. Chinese gold miners were discriminated against and shunned by Europeans. Despite this they carved out lives in this strange new land.
This short documentary explores the story of Chinese people in the Victorian gold rush, uncovering the routes the Chinese took to seek gold, the lives they lived and the sort of people they were.
This film forms part of the Many Roads story on the Culture Victoria website: cv.vic.gov.au/stories/immigra...

A lot of opinions in this video about what it "would've been like" for Chinese people back then. Some of the facts stated were good info though: the poll tax, organization of the groups of Chinese people, the harsh trip from the ports to the mines.
Statement about Southern Chinese people being loud is all too true. Gave me a good laugh.

OMG this is soooooooo boring for children to listen to! Please consider a narrator voiceover that shares important key facts with an INTERESTING voice, not some museum bureaucrats who are bored with their jobs and want to make a video for the museum to add to their CVs! Not well thought out Victoria Museum!
