    Thanks, Steve! That is a wild rig and it hydraulic from the 40's. Being a truck driver and equipment operator and general machine nut since kidhood, hydraulics have intrigued me from birth. Push, pull and turn and you can do anything with them. Kept looking for Don to crawl out of the sump. Thanks again and GBWYou!

      @@ellieprice363 it is ribbing sarcasm 😎. Steve calls it the beast I say or is cute and little because I have 2 machines that out weigh it. We are really just like 2 high schoolers bantering.

    Very impressive machine.
    Thanks for the instruction.
    I have always been impressed with the war time machine tools.
    Think about what was going on when they manufactured everything in the war years.
    We were the best machine tool manufacturers in the World.
    Some of the best Tool and Die, Machinists in the world in America.
    Thanks to the EPA and imports and no interest of being a Craftsman.
    So much has been lost.
    Glad to see some of us are preserving our craft.
    Honoring those who came before.
    Thanks Steve, EM.

      IT's a nice machine... Slower than a mill but it can do things a mill really can't do economically to long material.

      No interest in being a craftsman ? Why would young people be interested in that ? You can earn more in Mcdonalds serving coffee and not have to work in cold or unpleasant surroundings, often under pressure, and the prospects are not good either, with companies having tooling and products made in China. I used to work in that game, gave it up, and recommend to young guys to find a different career.

    Thanks for the refresher course running the Rockford planer. Brings back lots of old memories from the time I ran one for a short period of time planning a 11 foot lathe bed. I remembered dad making me go around the bed with a welding rod and unplug all of those drain holes so the oil could drain back into the sump. And wiping out the drain all the way around, what a nasty mess that was!
    I had a shorter bed planer, a Cincinnati planer, a few years later. Most of the holes on top of the table were plugged with wooden dowel rod cut off about 1/2" long. They were oil soaked swollen tight in the holes, fun getting out.
    As always, thanks for sharing Steve, Ken

    Steve, nice expiation on planner use. That holding system is called jack and pin. There is a pin like a big center punch pushing down the plate on the table holding it in place.

    • @10swatkins
      @10swatkins  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No this is different... There is no pushing down on the material. The pin inserts into the table and the screws keep the material from moving side to side...

    Banner week for Planer videos. Keith has the New Haven running and you're walking us through a '40s Rockford.
    Enjoyed your detailed explanation of it's operation.
    Now then, I think I have a box of plastic plugs somewhere in my awful mess, need to go do some hunting around.

    I asked the owner that I just made 3 Liquidation Sale videos if he had and shaper's are planer's. He had a 20ft, like yours, but was a Cincinnati, and sold already. You and Don mite want to make a trip up to Ft. Worth to see this sale. Be going on till all is liquidated, along with 27 AC. Owners contact info is in the description on all 3 parts. Bear

    Does that lower clapper move up and down with the upper section, and is it used for plaining the side of the workpiece?

    • @10swatkins
      @10swatkins  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The side head has a dovetail and a screw that allows it to move about 29 inches up and down on the L shaped carrier that is clamped to the column. The carrier can move up and down, lock it into place and then the side head can move up and down. I mostly use it when planing the knee of a mill. That allows me to plane two sides and maintain a prefect 90 degree relationship.
