Finally someone said it because Top Down mixing never ever works for me

I feel the title is rather miss leading. This isn't why you should stop top down mixing. It's just telling the audience hey don't use the same mix bus processing for every song, each song comes with its own changes you need to make. I still mix top down however I don't use the same processes for every mix bus. Besides from that I think this is a great video! I've started watching your content and its great. Love them :)

Fair enough, man! I say "stop" top-down because having processing on from the beginning without first hearing the tracks can get you into trouble. I wouldn't say not to use buss processing unless taste or the song didn't need it. It's awesome to have you! Thanks for checking out the video, man!

Bingo it’s a bit of a straw man argument.

yeah i mean, i don’t enjoy the top-down approach and like to keep my 2bus pretty uncluttered, but using the same chain + settings for individual tracks in a bottom-up mix would be a bad idea too. even relying on instrument-specific ones like “MY signature bass guitar chain!” for different projects seems hacky. just… trying to be more intentional with choices in your art/craft is really basic. what’s weird is that people who recently tried top-down for the first time often say they found similar benefits as stated here, so i’m thinking just imposing a novel condition is a factor in getting people to rethink the things that have become automatic to the detriment of your mixing.

Hi Glenn I thought I was crazy when I build a mix from song to song then treat the mix bus deferent for each song. Thanks for taking about it.🙏🏼

I’m starting to get this, “listen and then process” letting go of constraints and rules I think the best thing to do is go as you feel it and make your own method and use your ears and apply the right techniques to certain scenarios.

Right on! What sounds good is good, my friend! Crank the EQ or don't. Whatever YOU think it needs. :)

it can either speed up your workflow or can make you chasing your own tail while the mix isn't "there yet". especially when you start using limiter and/or clipper on the stereo out lol (this can actually ruin your gain staging step).

I cannot imagine loading the exact same effects on every 2-bus! Ouch. I'm not a big fan of top-down mixing, but it must be tailored to the mix (and references), every time.

So do I understand correctly, it's not the top town mixing approach that is the problem it's the use of preset plugin chains? I hear so many different opinions about the method from pro level engineers. Being an intermediate level mixer, I find it helps me get through the mix a lot faster than mixing the traditional way. It helps me to visualize the overall mix sound in a more focused manner. Sound wise I'm not sure if it is actually holding me back of achieving the best mix. So I rather would not waste my time learning a new way of mixing if it in the end will just make the sound worse.

I think the best advice I can give is to listen first, then process. If you push up a rough mix and start listening to the tracks and THEN apply low end boosts or saturation or anything while listening then that’s awesome if it helps you get to the finish line faster. My use of the top down mixing title/thumbnail doesn’t give enough room for detail which I hope the video was able to explain.
To answer your first question, I’m not a fan of having preset plugin chains on from the very beginning without hearing the tracks. I think that can cause more trouble than it’s worth.

That's the beautiful thing about art! To each their own. I guess my point wasn't even to NOT use TDM but rather to set it up on a per-song basis. Anyways! Thanks for watching!

Hrmm... Other than the sorta click-bait title, there's nothing here that makes any real case for NOT using top-down mixing. (Which I agree should be on a case-by-case basis. But certainly one should NOT just "STOP using it") ......
Anyway, never seen any other channel videos, but I'm reading -- "This PRO mixer...." yet hearing.... "I'm down to an Apollo twin DUO for processing and not sure I can justify the cost of buying an Octo" for my J-O-B. - Which s odd to me....I mean, it's an amortizable business expense. (Along with the plugins that are already paid for.) - I use the cr@p out of my gear & get upset with myself if I waste money on gear that doesn't make it's ROI. (And a pair of Octos sure beats the two 24 space road racks I use to have to lug/ship).

Who really cares HOW you achieve your desired results, so long as you do in fact achieve them? Telling people that there's something inherently 'wrong' with their mixing approach is kinda whack.

    • @TheMixAcademy
      @TheMixAcademy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I generally agree with you. Thumbnail and title aside don’t you think it’s good mixing advice to encourage people to listen before they process anything?

Top down mixing has nothing to do with templates, this video isn't about top down mixing at all. Dishonest title and thumbnail.
