I have variegated liriope in my yard here in La Pine, Oregon, USA. This is a hard climate to grow anything, but this liriope is very cold hearty, and has survived year after year in areas where it's getting full, hot sun, and where nobody has been watering it for years!!! I can't believe how tough this grass is. This year I've been watering it and it's growing twice as big. My climate is USDA zone 6a. We have long, cold winters down to -20 degrees F, and hot, high desert (4200 ft) summers that are very dry, so plants have to be tough to grow here but my liriope thrives. It's so tough you can just put a path right through it and walk over it all the time and it just eats that treatment for breakfast. Amazing.

A Hori Hori would help you separate that big clump into smaller ones.

It isn't necessary unless it starts to look too weathered or ragged.
