    Discriminating against community college students is discriminating against poor people and non traditional students

    OMG, I wanted to cry because I had to transfer from a 4 year (GPA is good) to Community because of money due to the pandemic. This made me feel a little better about myself. THANK YOU.

      I will give you some more hope. I had a very successful cycle coming from a CC and I know several med students who did as well. I go to a University of California med school as well. Schools really don’t care especially in your circumstance.

    The issue of taking med school prereqs at community college, is very nuanced. It varies greatly based on individual schools and university systems. Here in California, many of the UC med schools prefer classes be taken at 4 year institution.

    In Oregon, if you work hard in high school and have a 3.9-4.0 GPA , your tuition will be 50%, so that is $5000 a year. the community college in Oregon is $7500 for liberal courses.
    So study hard in high school in Oregon and be judicious in your course selections in High School and you could graduate with a university 4 year degree in two years paying $5000 a year.

    What about nontrad students that maybe didn't do so hot in undergrad but have to take classes at a community college because it's what their availability permits?

    I started at a CC and have applied this year to my local state medical school, I get my MCAT results in 10 days and that will determine if I get in or not. I was doing some research for a video I want to put out about this, but obviously words from an actual dean are way more important than my experience, so I was just gathering research for a future video and I'm so glad you posted this video! Not a lot of people have done this and i think it can be discouraging to a good number of ambitious students.

    Med School admissions are VERY non transparent and students aren't going to apply somewhere where there is no indication that a particular school will accept them based on their stats. It's unfortunate, but it's the flawed system we have.

    Thank you so much for answering my question. I'm currently attending UCLA as an art history major and it's very difficult to get into science classes here as a nonscience major. I did most of my science classes at community before transferring and I have been wondering where to finish them!

    If it's really true that you can take prereqs at a community college and you don't get penalized, not sure why not everyone does that. I took anatomy and physiology at a community college (the one that allied health majors take) to prepare for medical school, thinking, wow, this is not bad. When I took the same course in med school, the stuff I learned in the community college class was like 1% of what I had to learn in medical school. It wasn't even close.

      Are you seriously comparing undergraduate material to medical school material? 😐 of course it’s going to be lower intensity, more so because it’s at a community college, I’m not sure what you were expecting??

    • @pkay2227
      @pkay2227 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@cindyhernandez4663 I'm glad you think that's obvious. You would think that, but I've met plenty of allied health professionals (nurses, technologists, etc.) who think they took the same course. Lol. I had actually thought it would be somewhat similar. Boy was I wrong.

    I need one only one math class (Calculus) in order to graduate, but I have to take pre-calculus as a prerequisite. Would it be okay to take pre-calc at a community college and then calculus at my university? Most of the precalc classes are already full at my university.

    I’m kind of in the same situation. My only difference is that in switching careered from psychology to medicine. In a forensic psychologist now and want to take my experiences further into medicine. I’m taking some of my coursework at a nearby community college and finishing them up at VCU. I excelled in undergraduate and in graduate school. Thank you for this. 😌

    Screw this system. its all about money. Nobody wants to teach because they get paid either way whether or not the students pass or fail. and in the end the student lose time and money. I left high school with perfect grades and entered college struggling. This is the worst experience of my life and its all because the snobbish professors want to play games with our time.

    Dr. Gray,
    I graduated nursing school with a 3.4, and while I was in nursing I concurrently took some pre-med classes because of my dream. I am planning to finish my pre-med pre-req 4 courses in 3 semesters while I work full time as a registered nurse (I graduated bsn dec 2020 and passed boards on january). Will people think I am rushing? Is this too much learning for a new grad nurse? Please help 🥺

      Many schools reject nurse majors because they see nursing as a back up

      @none no not really, nurse majors get rejected often because medical schools see nurse majors as a back up plan

    What are your thoughts on the military EMDP2 program?

    • @leonardocruz3392
      @leonardocruz3392 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am in the military as well and this crossed my mind. However, I ultimately decided to not utilize the military to pay for my medical school. I was considering it because the medical school debt is a very daunting one. I also considered the HPSP program. However, both programs limit your choice of specialty depending on what Uncle Sam wants and needs and that is something I am not willing to give up for just financial aid.
