00:00 How To Wear Vintage Style Introduction
We love vintage apparel and accessories that stood the test of time. Here's how to incorporate them in your outfits so you look classic, not costumey or dated.
We believe that quite a few things, including certain aspects of fashion, are better the old-fashioned way. However, there are some things from the past that should actually just be left in the past.
The 30s had great style inspiration that carried over until today, but a pair of spats, a top hat, or a cane will just make you look distinctly vintage.
How To Wear Vintage Goods with Style Suggestions:
    02:00 1. Don't Wear Costumes
03:36 2. Be Aware of the Details
06:52 3. Combine Vintage with Modern Pieces
08:31 4. Know About the "Cumulative Costume Effect" of Accessories
11:50 5. Keep the Dress Code in Mind
13:08 6. Practice Inspiration, Not Duplication
    14:49 7. Be Confident
Be sure to check out the channel of ‪@Vintagebursche‬ !
We hope you found our tips helpful, and you can now create outfits that put you in the history books.

I really don't think we can afford to ignore how the simple matters of UTILiTY and common sense affect the decision to go vintage. For example, there's a huge difference in how you look carrying a cane just for appearances, and how it looks if you actually have a bum leg, or otherwise need it to walk.
Sometimes an interest in one or more pieces of vintage style is provoked less by a sentiment of "I wish I could wear that," than it is by thinking, "I could really USE one of those."

I have a tendancy to look dated, especially in the 1930's era. I don't particularly care. It makes me feel good, I tend to get a positive reception, I have no one to impress but myself, and, as they say, haters gonna hate. I don't care how dated I look, I just care that it looks good period.

@@user-iu1ru1qz7u Neither does the contrary. People with low standards would believe in such modern and trendy clothing statements. I would wear a White Tie Ensemble for appropriate occasions not every single day. I am not saying its never acceptable to wear casual clothing, but in a public setting where it doesn't require pure physical activities, wearing a suit and dress shoes would make someone look professional over someone wearing a plain t-shirt and shorts. If someone wants to dress in dated fashion, go ahead let them wear it. They shouldn't let anyone stop them from doing so.

I own a leather biker jacket, and I decided to put Epaulettes on it. I did this to stand out and emphasize my already fairly broad shoulders. I've gotten complements for wearing this because I'm confident in it.

Buy trousers that are 2" larger than your actual size and get them taken in. you can push it a bit if you get something 3-4" bigger but may look disproportional. The naturally longer rise measurement on trousers with larger waist sizes will make them much higher waisted after getting them taken in.

*I WEAR 1900 - 1930 ONLY* I learned to draft the patterns and tailor them myself so they are fully bespoke.
Because they are my normal day to day clothing I wear them with such nonchalance that most people don't even notice. I have to be wearing tweed plus fours and a caine etc for people to actually stop and stare. So my advice, wear something vintage-inspired every day until it becomes your norm. At that point, you can start to push the boundaries with confidence.

That's an interesting take on Vintage USA styles. In the UK people visit the equivalent of your thrift shops in search of vintage clothing which in the UK are either specifically charity shops or used vintage shops or people go to vintage fairs to buy their vintage clothing. We are also blessed with 'Joe Browns' who are a clothing company who replicate brand new vintage clothing and accessories. I guess having new vintage rather defeats the search of having original vintage? However you can mix and match old with new, as you have shown in your video. I like to wear vintage myself and sometimes think I should have lived in a different era! Having said that as a teen back in the 1970's you wouldn't have seen me within a mile of a charity/vintage shop. Yet today youngsters are into the vintage scene......I think it's much more than a fashion thing today.
Media today in all its wide formats from video games set in the 30's or 40's to WW1/WW2 films in the cinema all have their influences on people. And I suppose that people look back on nostalgic times and recall they were better dressed, had more glamorous times. However WW1/WW2 wasn't exactly a picnic, and the troubled times we are all living through today with Covid etc was nothing compared to WW1/WW2.

Lapels are tricky because some people do like wider lapels, but shinny lapels never look good as they look like they are almost not there. One thing to never mess with is fit, neither too skinny nor too baggy, rather than making you look 20's or 80's, a bad fit just makes it like you are wearing someone else's clothes.

Apparently the pink tie in Diamonds Are Forever was used as he gets thrown into a swimming pool. They didn’t want to ruin an expensive silk tie, so they used a cheap polyester tie! It gets a lot of stick in the Bond community, but all the other ties he wears in the movie are more conservatively coloured expensive silk ones, like the ones that he wore in all the previous films.

In terms of vintage clothing, I got my start as a Civil War reenactor, and I still wear a reproduction overcoat in the winter - a long, single-breasted sack coat, to be specific. Occasionally it feels little awkward, but I've gotten nothing but nice comments on it, along with my other "old fashioned" items.

There's a way to dress like a certain decade that won't make it look like a costume or even dated necessarily and that is to make sure that the clothing is something that wouldn't have been a big fashion statement back then either. For instance, if you like the 1960's, it's the difference between wearing a skinny tie with a fedora from wearing a loud, slim mod suit like you walked off of Carnaby Street. The former are specific details that are definitely hallmarks of the era yet are subtle enough to work with classic suits whereas the latter look is completely of it's time.

I understand Raphael’s point, but Downton Abbey cosplay would be great fun, and I wouldn’t care who thought it inappropriate when out running errands etc.
I definitely agree that staying away from cheap remake costume pieces don’t really provide a stylish look!

I'm lucky enough to have inherited a few garments from my grandfather. Doubly so as we're very similar in proportions and he had a few really nice things from 60s/70s. Most of all is an emerald Hickey Freeman sharkskin, just had to work on the trousers (remove cuffs). It, like me is probably 1964. And his cashmere buff overcoat, beautiful, hand stitched deal, The Harris tweed overcoat suffers from cuff and shoulder epaulettes from the 70s, but is close.

See this is where my struggle is. I'm transitioning from being a goth kid into trying to dress in a more mature and refined manner. I spent twenty years wearing chains and Tripp pants. No I still intend to hang out with my Gothic Friends by wearing a vintage style of Victorian or Edwardian. As they specifically do outings in wild outfits. But the rest of my time I want to look more mature modern.

Me: Regularly watches Gentleman's Gazette, finds the topics interesting and ponders about the nuances and intricacies of men's fashion in an engaged manner.
Also me: Owns two button-down dress shirts and a generic, black leather belt and considers wearing those to be for special occasions. I don't even own a pair of dress pants.
As genuinely entertaining as these videos are, I'm simply not cut out for men's fashion. I suppose I can always fantasize.

As with most things, it looks like it’s about what you own. But it’s not. It’s really about what you know so that you can use what you already have. Gentleman’s gazette is pretty formal tho, so check out @One Dapper Street for more modern information to apply to your current wardrobe :)

Zach Pinsent and Jon Townsends regularly dress in 18th century clothing, they just sew it themselves in Zach’s case because he’s a tailor, or have it made by a team of seamstresses, in Jon’s case because he has a catalog of re-enactor clothing.

Personally I don't know what your problem is with the 1970s suits I think it revived the suit and got rid of those boring plain coloured skinny 60s suits in general I've always preferred wide legged trousers and wide lapels but at the end of the day that is just my opinion now going back to the 70s I live in the UK and the 70s suits in the UK were not as extreme as the American bright polyester suits and whenever you type up some 70s clothes on Google you will always find the extreme end you'd be better to go with 70s casual bomber jacket for example or the large collar shirts but in a way where they don't look dated I cannot stand skinny fit suits My Favourite collars are sear point style and I love art deco ties you can never find a tie that looks the same with that style

I'm reasonably new to watching, and subscribing to these channels. I appreciate the advice and guidance. However, at times I am conflicted with my impressions. This video talks about a gentleman's style not be "costumey". My conflict is that I admire the appreciation for quality, but I feel that some outfits worn are worn to deliberately be different. I.e. a costume.
