The M4 iPad Pro does not have a headphone jack socket. However, no worries, a simple adapter cable by Apple, sometimes called a dongle, will do the job.
So what we need to use is the Apple USB-C Headphone Jack Adapter cable. As well as supplying a stereo audio output for your wired headphones, on a 3.5mm TRS jack. It is also compatible as a microphone input for any headphones or headset that have a built in mic that use a 3.5mm TRRS jack plug. The adapter will also work with dedicated microphones that use the 3.5mm TRRS standard as well.

Alongside the adapter have you looked at apples usb c wired EarPods. For £20 what a great set of wired EarPods for video calls or for music on an iPad or anything usb c. I always have mine in my bag.
For me nothing beats quality wired headphones. But when out and about having the wired usb c EarPods on hand is awesome.
On my 10.5 pro there is a big difference in sound when using the audio output with headphones, and the same headphones via adapter to the lightning port. Here you can't compare that. May take another apple device with audio output and compare that with the USB-C sound would be interesting.
Hi. In a previous life I was a music producer and sound engineer and am quite familiar with audio. I’ve used these headphones and that audio adapter to compare against the sound of music I’ve created, mixed and monitored on my Macs using their headphone output and my usual USB audio interfaces and there isn’t a huge difference in it. The problem with using a microphone to pick up the sound coming out of headphones from different sources. Is that the sound will likely be quite different and if you weren’t familiar with the audio, there’d be no way to tell which sound source in such a comparison is the “better” one. In your scenario, it may be the case that the DAC in the Lightning to headphone adapter is different to the one on the USB-C to headphone adapter. In any event, this cable is fine for what it’s intended for, which is reflected in its price. For “proper” audio monitoring you’d be best off using a high end USB audio interface and not a simple, convenient converter that’s designed for ultimate portability and costs less than £10/€10/$10. However, your comment has given me an idea for a comparison using various headphone outputs at low level as line outputs for recording comparisons 👍 Cheers, Dave.
@@DavidHarry Hey Dave, that's a good idea! :-)
@@AcysLoungeHi. Yes, I think lowering the output of the headphone output and getting it to around the voltage of a line level output and then recording that output using a good stereo ADC, would be a fair way of comparing the outputs from different headphone outputs. There would of course be differences in impedance etc. across the different headphone outputs. However, I would imagine the differences to be minimal and they should also represent the differences that you may expect in the reproduction of the same audio on headphones. The only problem with such testing is personal preference. Some people like their music/audio more bass heavy or with more high frequencies. So even an audio mix or sound that is “technically” perfect, may not be what some people want. You could have a “technically” perfect mix of a song but some people want to add more bass to it. In which case they wouldn’t prefer the “technically” better mix compared to a re-EQ’d bass heavy version. Plus my perception of what’s a “technically” perfect mix may be different to anyone else’s perception. Given that I grew up listening to DEVO, The Human League, Joy Division, Blondie etc. I’m sure my hearing and taste have been effected and influenced by what music I grew up with 😆 Cheers, Dave.
IAM the first 😅
