    I was looking at the Kock sharpening system but, the price is ultra expensive and this is much the same, I was very pleased that you told people to turn the machine around and why otherwise they’d be wearing the knives or chisels. Good job well done Russell.

    Funny coincidence. I just got into knife customizing, and just came across a mini grinder/buffer similar to this. Great idea, because it'll serve me better than whatever crappy strop I try to make.

    Most power drills have a speed setting. If you have a power drill -- which I believe most people do -- and a bench vice, get yourself some soft jaws, and clamp the drill in the vice. Now you have a bench vice with a decent amount of power and variable-speed control. The mini bench grinder looks cleaner, though, and has the additional advantage of being able to use two wheels at the same time.

    • @RussellPlatten
      @RussellPlatten  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The mini grinder is so easy to use compared to a drill. :-)

      @@RussellPlatten Yes, if you're going to sharpen stuff often, it probably makes more sense to have a dedicated grinder.

    Russell love you wood butterfly on the bench 👍did you do a video of you carving it , I would like to try that some time. My wife likes butterflies.😀

    • @RussellPlatten
      @RussellPlatten  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I cut the butterfly wings and body out using my scrollsaw. The pattern is available from the scrollsaw workshop website. The patterns are all free: www.stevedgood.com/3dbutterfly.pdf
      I used thicker wood for the body than the wings I had some wallnut so it was darker.
      I used various Dremel bits and sanding tools to shape the body. Pretty easy project of you have the gear Darryl. :-)

    Great job sir
    My concern is with these little grinders can be under estimated on there danger, I caught a tool that were being buffed on my home made buffing wheels for the machine. it lifted the machine and it bounced all hell broke loose, it caught the tool and the tool acted like a lifting device, Any ways I bought a cheep wooden chopping board and screwed leather strap either side of the stand to the board, this now eliminates it ever lifting and flipping it, just a warning to those who may use it for polishing and think it may never happen to them,
    I notice you had the wheels spinning away from you, in case it caught the blade,

    • @RussellPlatten
      @RussellPlatten  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you should always have the wheel rotating away from the tool to prevent dangerous dig ins! :-)

  • @bamafaninky861
    @bamafaninky861 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you used mdf board instead of leather could you sharpen on top of the wheel using one hand? I can't use my left hand so I can't sharpen across the wheel but could on the top. Thanks for the help.

    • @RussellPlatten
      @RussellPlatten  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would not like to spin MDF at the sort of speeds this machine can reach. You could make two leather wheels. Mount them on each end and then make a base to allow you to turn the unit around from one side to the other easily whilst supporting it. That would allow you to have a wheel that spins the right way for each side of the blade. :-)

  • @raquelhdz7124
    @raquelhdz7124 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Awesome! thanks for the recommendation, I just purchased the mini bench grinder but I am not sure how much I could actually do with the right orange wheel... could you tell me some examples please? could you hone bigger knifes with it or ?....

    • @RussellPlatten
      @RussellPlatten  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The orange wheel is a grinding wheel, so it can be used to roughly sharpen tools, reshape them or remove steel fairly quickly. You must be careful not to overheat the tips of any tools as this will 'draw the temper' of the steel and make it soft. I would not use a grinding wheel to sharpen knives as it could be dangerous with the grinding disk spinning towards you. You cannot hone a blade with a grinding disk. You need a leather strop, leather wheel or very fine sharpening stone to hone an edge to razor sharp. :-)

      I just searched on ebay for veg tan leather and found lots of retailers. Here is a link to one selling 4mm thickness and there is an option for 8in by 12in which would give you the 6 discs. sorry it is such a long link: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/293181474077?var=592050291379&hash=item4442fa451d:g:Uk0AAOSwr81c2TxY&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAAoG6tf7H4AZQULhUjHblQkMDG5%2BFD8ryqSHDOC4ai8%2BrJ%2BdF1HUMNBV6gMQ9ksEqKVmu1zksbrL8v%2Bg3LSdDIC0asoNps%2B3u2LuEVxIARDIvGfMSRC4yBAiBG%2BzRzG1SL2ViL3VtEEkMi2hCdgPgVlwzWBaHH5E%2FN3xpxVRHzYnxbB7lcVc2N%2FYGqUmAWLbXfw8ZTUa04x4wUUI3v2AcC5Hc%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR5r04ITPYQ

    Can you tell me the model number for this mini grinder. I looked on amazon and see one with a light and flex shaft. Love what you did and want the same. Thanks in advance, also where did you purchase leather wheel.

    • @RussellPlatten
      @RussellPlatten  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Susan, if you look in the video description there are links to this grinder and similar models. It is not available in the UK at the moment, but there is a similar unit on Amazon so I added a link to that as well as a link to a similar unit in the US. As for the leather wheel, I made that myself and there is also a link in the description to that video. I find the set up very handy and although I am not using it all the time, I often touch up my kitchen knives and carving chisels to keep them sharp. :-)

    Razor sharp and faster than a stone 😂. I learned the hard way and used to use the stones and sandpaper and diamond sticks and ceramic sticks which are great for making an edge but this , this is the way once it’s sharp and needs brought back to a razor . 1 minute literally

    Interesting video . this mini grinder seems rather gutless (no power ) when you load it down is this causing you any issues with your using it ?

    • @RussellPlatten
      @RussellPlatten  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does slow down, but it gets the job done. I use it to hone my kitchen knives and tools. :-)

    • @spacewalla3574
      @spacewalla3574 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because you’ve added a larger wheel the torque output of the grinder will be decreased. So when applying any pressure the grinder will slow down more with an increased risk of burning out the motor. I recommend a very light touch to keep the speed up. But thanks for the video
