  • I went hunting for possible upgrades for the A1000. I wanted to keep it running Workbench 1.3 and didnt want to turn it into some fire-breathing Amiga.
    So is the Parceiro II the answer?

    Fred Fish was the most famous software line of Public Domain Software. From Games to tools to crazy apps it had it all.

      Fish disks were (initially) DECUS public domain software recompiled for the Amiga

    • @ShieTar_
      @ShieTar_ ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevepoling Some programs on it, sure. I think most GNU-things got on a Fish-Disk in those days, coming from a DEC or any other Unix-Machine. But even the very first Fish-Disks had stuff on them that was very specifically AMIGA-based. Like the very first disk had a demo for the HAM-Mode on it, which had nothing to do with any DEC Computer ever.
      So I think for the most part a better description would be that a lot of PD-Software made it to DECUS and also to the Fish Disks (and other collections on other Systems, and of course the Usenet at large).

      @@ShieTar_ I'm working with well over 30 year old memories here. There was a lot of generic C code in the public domain from various sources. One had to put some work into localizing software for the Amiga. If memory serves, these were the days before the GNU autoconfig and libtool tools so one had to tweak the code to run on the Amiga.

    When the Amiga was first released, until WB 1.2 it was 'a tad incomplete'. In the enthusiast world people started creating demo, utilities, programming examples (like a demonstration of the graphics.library by Dale Luck) and ultimately full applications. Some, like Perry Kirvokiwitz's Recoverable RAM disk were 'duplicated' in later OS releases (1.3). For things so useful the authors asked that people send in a check (shareware), VD0: was $10. Kirvokowitz would go on to create the company ASDG and is a professor of Computer Science in New England.
    Fish (a programmer himself) stated putting these together on serialized floppy discs, almost no one outside of a university setting had access to the early (pre-web) internet. Amazing Computing magazine started covering the contest of these assembled items as Fish would publish them about 10 at a time, say early 86. It was a godsend, but everything about the Amiga was and that's why nearly 40 years later we're still here. 👍.

    Wonderful video. Thank you. Yep. the 010's main claim to fame was that it could interface with external PMMU's and a few extra interrupts that the 68000 won't know about or care for .. HP did this in the HP9000-300 (and some other models (SGI with the 68k gear pre Iris, $etc)) with a home-made MMU to run full HP-UX with protected && paged memory for instance. Compared to a bog 68000, it has a few instructions that are 'slightly' faster than a 68000 at the same speed. Sometimes this can cause incompatibilities with demos (timing mostly). I ran one for over a decade daily. It's good. Fred Fish was a guy that made a massive shareware /freeware archive and released "Fish Disks" periodically. You get the disk directory listing (printed or electronically in a text file) and you order a shareware disk with the software you want to try. I really hope you enjoy exploring this machine. Amiga's are a joy. If you do any development, check out SAS C, heck you could probably easily run v6.5. Loved the King Tut moment :) :)

    The reason the 68010 supports universal quit key is because the 68010 was the first one that supported virtualization. Without an external MMU, it can't protect or trap memory (and thus can't virtualize memory or hardware properly), but on its own it does have the capacity to at least keep code execution contained on a logical level by trapping access to supervisor mode, by having an exception handler trick the userland code into thinking it can mess with supervisor mode, so if the running code doesn't trash actual memory containing the functions of the interrupt and exception handler, it is none the wiser that it isn't really in control of the system. Thus adding a quit key is trivial, you just have a supervisor-mode interrupt that checks if the quit key is pressed, and the game doesn't even know its there. You can just have a default quit key on every program without having to write anything new.
    The 68000 can't do this -- userland is free to mess with supervisor mode, so if you want to add a 68000-compatible quit key to a game you have to actually patch it into the game itself.

    I believe the A1000 floppy doesn't have the optical track 0 sensor, so "no click" applications will not work and trying to use them may misalign the drive over time. Of course, I haven't verified this on my own A1000. The program I use for my A1200 (and WinUAE) is called StarClick, and it works great.

Well the "ei" in "parceiro" is pretty much the same sound as your first "a" in "caveat".
