Am I the only one who has gotten sick of Harley Quinn over the past few years? They have been trying so hard to make her DC’s female Deadpool and it honestly has gotten annoying.
Xuan Nguyen Pham I haven’t been a big fan of most of her solo runs in the comics. I don’t like her as the “oh I’m so random” crazy. I much prefer her as the same kind of crazy as the joker.
Well not only that. But Harley isn’t actually a comic book character. She was an animated character made in Batman TAS by Bruce Tim. Comics were made of her over the years as she became more popular, but he status is silly. She’s nothing without the Joker as she only exists to embellish his character. By herself she’s just a weird talking woman with dyed hair... I have no idea why she’s interesting apart from her sex appeal.
Yeah Harley was just added into the plot as some "hole" for the Joker because DC comics having a copy woman counterpart to every male Hero was a thing back in the 90's
Actually Margo did a true depiction of Harley, a narcissistic psychopath that murders men because of her fixation with the Joker. She is however not an anti hero, it would be better if the movie is about the Birds of Prey trying to hunt and take her down.

Tbh Phoenix was amazing in the role but the Joker movie is really bad. Nothing screams Joker about this guy. I blame the director and the writers, Phoenix wouldve been the best Joker ever

I didn't find Joker sexist or misogynistic in any way. If you watch the movie he is a very caring person towards the women in his life. He takes care of his mother and is very sweet to his girlfriend and her kid. Granted that was an illusion of a relationship but they never paint him as a bad guy during it. He's actually very kind to most of the people in the movie for most of the runtime. He's even nice to the people that make fun of him or berate him. He's even nice to young Bruce. I fail to see where the sexism or misogyny exists in this movie at all. I never got or understood the criticism of Joker. The movie is very much in the same vein as Logan but Logan never got that type of hate even though it's a much more violent movie including children killing and being killed. Yet, you have a movie about a nice man that slowly goes crazy and all of a sudden it's sexist and Misogynistic? Get out of here. This is why you never listen to critics. They're not worth the ink they write with.
I don't know who Robbie thought she was fooling by saying that. If you look at Cathy Yan's imdb page, she had barely any directing credits prior to getting this gig. It's plain as day that she wasn't hired on merit or experience; they just wanted a woman director and didn't care who it was. Now if they'd hired someone like Deborah Chow and called her the best person for the job, that I might have believed, but saying it about Yan is just silly.
Birds of Prey from comics from what I googled it is a Barbara Gordon led group of female heroes that started as a partnership between Barbara Gordon and Black Cannary.Harley Quinn has nothing to do with Birds of Prey from what I read. What this movie has in common with the comic books is just the title.

I hate when great characters are pushed down( Cassandra Cain and Joker) too push up Harley Quinn. They've been doing this in the comics too. I loved Harley once upon a time but good gosh DC just keep pushing her to almost Mary sue levels.

As a comic book fan, I wasn't planning on seeing this movie anyway. It's not acquit to the source material. Cassandra kane isn't an assassin, no batgirl, why is Rena in this movie?, this black mask isn't threatening, Victor zaz is a joke, and my biggest problem is why is this a Harley Quinn movie?

The comment in CM could have been perceived as rude, I think. But certainly not rude enough for him to deserve to be robbed and threatened with a maiming, which is probably why the scene was cut.

Well, Huntress does have a few action scenes and they're good minus the phantom punches bit. If you're going to see the movie for any reason, see it for Huntress. She's honestly the most redeeming part despite her relatively small role.
If you're hiring solely based on sex that's discrimination and is illegal. If you're looking for "revenge" then you're not starting at the right place and are just as bad as the people you're seeking revenge after. Black Mask in this movie is a fucking disgrace. Cheetah in WW1984 has the same type of reaction to a man who hits on her. He says something, doesn't touch her and she beats the living shit out of him. Granted she had an issue with him earlier in the movie but the response was not level with the crime. It's kind of funny and ironic that they got this "Awesome female director" to do the movie only to come back and hire A MAN to redirect half of it because she sucked and couldn't get it done.
The character of Quinn itself, going back to its intro in the animated series, was always designed to play off others, it was all support, even when she goes off on her own, she plays off interactions with poison ivy and others. As a main character, without real development, the character is more a caricature, and a piss poor one at that.
This movie isn't made for comic book fans or fans of the characters in any other medium. This movie is made for the teenage girls that liked shopping at Hot Topic after the first Suicide Squad movie. The reason why the costumes and the Birds of Prey look like crap in this movie is because they want to be able to sell cheap cosplay to teen girls.
It’s funny to me that you hated this movie, while two other guys who’s reviews I watched thought it was good. They didn’t mention any of the stuff you did. One of the other guys is an aspiring screenwriter...I just found that out. Bottom line...I trust your reviews over those other guys. @21st I'm revolted by the cynical exercise of deliberate race swapping. As in all heavy handed affirmative action casting, they weren't looking for "someone right for the job" at all. Just someone of a pre-determined background to satisfy a perverse quota. She was possibly right for the part she played in the movie. But that character is Black Canary in name only.

Seems they were hardly even consulted while promoting this, waiting too long.
About this being a Margot Robbie ego trip... I heard somewhere that the original concept for this movie was going to be a Gotham City Sirens movie, a group that actually included Harley in it, but that Margot vetoed it because she was worried that the DCEU debut of its other two members, Catwoman and Poison Ivy, would overshadow her performance. Sadly, I haven't been able to find much on my own to corroborate this story, at most that Gotham City Sirens was indeed the original plan before 'changes in management' resulted in it being changed to Birds of Prey, but given the movie we eventually got it wouldn't surprise me if that was actually the case.
That's what I heard too. GCS was the plan at one point, but Margot Robbie shot it down and we somehow wound up with this instead. Just goes to show, Robbie shouldn't have been the decision-maker in this situation. She was making decisions that she thought would benefit her and her character, not the other characters, the story-telling process or the franchise in general.
From what brief digging I've done, Margot Robbie's official reason for choosing to make Birds of Prey before Gotham City Sirens (which is still planned to happen apparently, and IMDB lists Robbie as an executive producer for it) was, quote, "Focusing on the Gotham City Sirens, there were only three of us, and we were all well known, whereas with Birds of Prey you can pick any grouping for that... And I thought that might be the perfect platform to introduce some female characters who might really have some legs in the DC Universe." Given both the marketing and the movie we actually got, this statement comes off as either an outright lie or an attempt at self-justification on her part. And more recent media rumors also suggest that the plan is to have BoP be the first in a 'Harley Quinn trilogy', with the second movie being Sirens and the third possibly being 'Birds of Prey vs. Gotham City Sirens', so the ride isn't over yet, unless the poor performance of Birds of Prey convinces Warner Brothers to either scrap those plans entirely or keep a tighter leash on production moving forward.

Well, then again, the whole premise of this movie is "women don't need no man" so this really SHOULDN'T be a surprise...should it? It's ALSO possible the Joker actor took one look at the script and KNEW it would be an absolute disaster, and refused to have ANYTHING to do with it, for fear the stink of failure would cling to him and ruin his good work with Joker.

This is like making a Superman movie but the main character is James Olsen.I mean if you wanted a '' strong lead female character '' then you wouldn't get a better one then the Oracle , a woman who fought crime as BatGirl then crippled by the Joker but rather then give up & quit she used her abilities & technical know how to bring together the Birds of Prey to continue to fight crime. Why didn't WB make that movie ? .
Best guess is that they want to do a Batgirl solo movie at some point and they can't do that if she's in a wheelchair. Ironically, they could have done one with Cassandra Cain as Batgirl if they hadn't introduced Cassandra as this useless version.

Terrible. I couldn't finish the movie. I watched it at home so no movie house charges. And that's the highlight of the movie for me. And this is coming from someone who went to the theaters to see Suicide Squad and stayed to finish it.

The DCEU was SO close...I honestly thought they were about to get out of this hole that they were in. They had some big wins with Shazam! and Aquaman; they were pretty average, but everyone thought they were going to be terrible! The fact that they were passable, surprised EVERYONE. It made people excited to see what could come next... And yet, the next movie that comes after them...is a Sequel to the Suicide Squad movie...that NO ONE WANTED!!! Seriously, why did this movie get made? You want to know the WORST part of this? If they wanted to make a movie to showcase the plight of the battered woman in abusive relationships with a man? ....They SHOULD have just shown the Joker and Harley Quinn together! Seriously; most people only see her as his henchwoman; others see her as his girlfriend. And yet...the things he does to her; has done...THAT'S A MOVIE IN AND OF ITSELF! Hell, he THREW out of a window once because she trapped Batman the "wrong way". They could've gotten a movie that drove their message home AND one that was entertaining for fans. Also, isn't Cassandra Cain the "Other" Batgirl after Barb becomes Oracle? - As in, the daughter of Lady Shiva who was raised to be a body-guard for Rah's Al-Gul, effectively abusing her and mentally scarring her for life? How did they fuck-up a character like that? You've got both Harley Quinn and Cassandra Cain in this movie and they want to tell a story about women being abuse victims...How did they fuck it up?!
GIven the obvious agenda of the people involved, how could they NOT fuck it up? As Ghostbuster 2016, Terminator Woke Fate, and Charlie's Angels make abundantly clear, these people NEVER learn from their mistakes. These people think if a movie has the "right" politics, it doesn't matter if they bother to put any effort to do competent filmmaking. Given the drubbing these got at the box office, they are also dead wrong.
So wait, Suicide Squad establishes that Harley participated in the torture and murder of Robin, a kid, and yet Birds of Prey has her protecting and bonding with a young girl? Yeeeeah, not making a lot of sense but then again, the DC cinematic universe has an issue with character consistency and event continuity.

The only interesting part of Harley Quinn is her relationship with the Joker. Even then, the Joker is the best one. Harley is just his side piece. I used to enjoy her (not as much as Poison Ivy, Huntress, Catwoman, etc.), but not anymore. She's boring and Margot Robbie is no longer cool.

Theory: After Dark Fate and Charlie’s Angels, studio knows that they have a turd on their hands. Try to downplay woke elements. But Ewan McGregor, who probably thought the movie was dumb, decides to get his own back by letting everyone know how woke it is. The confusing marketing is just Ewan doing a big “fuck you” to Robbie and the director.

Watched it last night. Terrible movie from start to end. And they managed to screw up Huntress, Black Canary and Cassandra Cain so badly they need to reboot and ignore this aberration to fix them. And since it's WB I have no doubt they'll reboot it ..... of course there's an 85% chance they'll fuck up the reboot as well. .....
@Todd Taylor Birds of Prey was a loose Adaptation Just like WB's Suicide Squad (2016) In both cases they were inaccurate to their source material and failed as a result because of this WB hired James Gunn to give us the ACTUAL Suicide Squad with the suicide squad (2021) movie that looks, feels, and represents, it's Comic Source material a lot better than the 2016 movie ever did Unfortunately birds-of-prey can't/won't go through the same thing any plans that WB had for a sequel are off the table since the film failed

Of all the Batman villains they went with to "be the face of misogyny" they went with Black Mask? Huh??? In the comics he's a mobster who wears a black mask, not what they depict in this movie (yes, I know he started out as a Hush-type villain who hated Bruce for what he saw as Bruce ruining his company, but they transitioned him more into just a mob boss later). There were other villains that I would argue would have fit far better as one to use instead of Black Mask. Now they've ruined any chance of using this character in interesting ways in the future.

I didn't find Joker sexist or misogynistic in any way. If you watch the movie he is a very caring person towards the women in his life. He takes care of his mother and is very sweet to his girlfriend and her kid. Granted that was an illusion of a relationship but they never paint him as a bad guy during it. He's actually very kind to most of the people in the movie for most of the runtime. He's even nice to the people that make fun of him or berate him. He's even nice to young Bruce. I fail to see where the sexism or misogyny exists in this movie at all. I never got or understood the criticism of Joker. The movie is very much in the same vein as Logan but Logan never got that type of hate even though it's a much more violent movie including children killing and being killed. Yet, you have a movie about a nice man that slowly goes crazy and all of a sudden it's sexist and Misogynistic? Get out of here. This is why you never listen to critics. They're not worth the ink they write with.

I don't know who Robbie thought she was fooling by saying that. If you look at Cathy Yan's imdb page, she had barely any directing credits prior to getting this gig. It's plain as day that she wasn't hired on merit or experience; they just wanted a woman director and didn't care who it was. Now if they'd hired someone like Deborah Chow and called her the best person for the job, that I might have believed, but saying it about Yan is just silly.

Correction: The dude in the deleted Captain Marvel scene was not rude whatsoever. He definitely wanted her attention and was admittedly pushy but he didn't say or do anything rude.

The character of Quinn itself, going back to its intro in the animated series, was always designed to play off others, it was all support, even when she goes off on her own, she plays off interactions with poison ivy and others. As a main character, without real development, the character is more a caricature, and a piss poor one at that.
This movie isn't made for comic book fans or fans of the characters in any other medium. This movie is made for the teenage girls that liked shopping at Hot Topic after the first Suicide Squad movie. The reason why the costumes and the Birds of Prey look like crap in this movie is because they want to be able to sell cheap cosplay to teen girls.

About this being a Margot Robbie ego trip... I heard somewhere that the original concept for this movie was going to be a Gotham City Sirens movie, a group that actually included Harley in it, but that Margot vetoed it because she was worried that the DCEU debut of its other two members, Catwoman and Poison Ivy, would overshadow her performance. Sadly, I haven't been able to find much on my own to corroborate this story, at most that Gotham City Sirens was indeed the original plan before 'changes in management' resulted in it being changed to Birds of Prey, but given the movie we eventually got it wouldn't surprise me if that was actually the case.
That's what I heard too. GCS was the plan at one point, but Margot Robbie shot it down and we somehow wound up with this instead. Just goes to show, Robbie shouldn't have been the decision-maker in this situation. She was making decisions that she thought would benefit her and her character, not the other characters, the story-telling process or the franchise in general.
From what brief digging I've done, Margot Robbie's official reason for choosing to make Birds of Prey before Gotham City Sirens (which is still planned to happen apparently, and IMDB lists Robbie as an executive producer for it) was, quote, "Focusing on the Gotham City Sirens, there were only three of us, and we were all well known, whereas with Birds of Prey you can pick any grouping for that... And I thought that might be the perfect platform to introduce some female characters who might really have some legs in the DC Universe."
Given both the marketing and the movie we actually got, this statement comes off as either an outright lie or an attempt at self-justification on her part. And more recent media rumors also suggest that the plan is to have BoP be the first in a 'Harley Quinn trilogy', with the second movie being Sirens and the third possibly being 'Birds of Prey vs. Gotham City Sirens', so the ride isn't over yet, unless the poor performance of Birds of Prey convinces Warner Brothers to either scrap those plans entirely or keep a tighter leash on production moving forward.

So a Birds of Prey movie without the main character of said IP been in the movie ,Oracle aka Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl. This is like making a Superman movie but the main character is James Olsen.I mean if you wanted a '' strong lead female character '' then you wouldn't get a better one then the Oracle , a woman who fought crime as BatGirl then crippled by the Joker but rather then give up & quit she used her abilities & technical know how to bring together the Birds of Prey to continue to fight crime. Best guess is that they want to do a Batgirl solo movie at some point and they can't do that if she's in a wheelchair. Ironically, they could have done one with Cassandra Cain as Batgirl if they hadn't introduced Cassandra as this useless version.

The only interesting part of Harley Quinn is her relationship with the Joker. Even then, the Joker is the best one. Harley is just his side piece. I used to enjoy her (not as much as Poison Ivy, Huntress, Catwoman, etc.), but not anymore. She's boring and Margot Robbie is no longer cool.

Theory: After Dark Fate and Charlie’s Angels, studio knows that they have a turd on their hands. Try to downplay woke elements. But Ewan McGregor, who probably thought the movie was dumb, decides to get his own back by letting everyone know how woke it is. The confusing marketing is just Ewan doing a big “fuck you” to Robbie and the director.
Harley deserves the Joker treatment, not this crap. It would be awesome if she is treated the same way with her origin. What a missed opportunity.

The truth is that Harley Quinn is tolerable as a sexy sidekick, but is just basically annoying when she gets too much screen time. Even with her animated series she becomes a pain real quick. It took me a bout six different sittings to get through this crap.

I honestly DO NOT understand why everyone is dolly eyes for Margo Robbies take on Harley not to mention the Directors and so new interpretation on both Harley Quinn and Joker and their relationship. It seriously Irks me to see people say they are Harley Quinn fans and then support this ' Thuggish Whore' angsty NY Thot spinoff " YOU BETTAH OWN THAT SHIT" Harley Quinn. She was literally gunna fuck a dude for joker and totally into it~ while original Harley is MAD in love with joker and will have NO ONE else. She's not a street bitch- she's a fucking College Doctorate who similar to Batman sees rehabilitation of Joker as their ultimate triumph and stand, and Joker manipulates them both to cause more mayhem. Ultimately if you even know the comics she left joker after he killed Jason Todd in a horrific fashion as it was too much for her and she confronted him, which lead joker to beat her within a inch of her life~ and how Ivy saved her and how the ACTUAL Queens of Gotham got started.

Watched it last night. Terrible movie from start to end. And they managed to screw up Huntress, Black Canary and Cassandra Cain so badly they need to reboot and ignore this aberration to fix them. And since it's WB I have no doubt they'll reboot it ..... of course there's an 85% chance they'll fuck up the reboot as well. .....

Birds of Prey was a loose Adaptation
Just like WB's Suicide Squad (2016)
In both cases they were inaccurate to their source material and failed as a result because of this WB hired James Gunn to give us the ACTUAL Suicide Squad with the suicide squad (2021) movie that looks, feels, and represents, it's Comic Source material a lot better than the 2016 movie ever did
Unfortunately birds-of-prey can't/won't go through the same thing any plans that WB had for a sequel are off the table since the film failed
Joker makes 1 billion dollars gets a sixty eight on rotten tomato birds of prey makes 13 million on a 96 million budget and recieves 82 percent equality

Of all the Batman villains they went with to "be the face of misogyny" they went with Black Mask? Huh??? In the comics he's a mobster who wears a black mask, not what they depict in this movie (yes, I know he started out as a Hush-type villain who hated Bruce for what he saw as Bruce ruining his company, but they transitioned him more into just a mob boss later). There were other villains that I would argue would have fit far better as one to use instead of Black Mask. Now they've ruined any chance of using this character in interesting ways in the future.
