This was on a D.C. news station in 1987. In those days I guess the news played on a loop because I remember being a kid, putting together a puzzle (of a medieval-looking chessboard) at the kitchen table, and this, along with some other big news items of the day, playing over and over on repeat. Nancy Reagan's breast cancer diagnosis being the only other one I remember. Anyhow, every time this came on I dropped everything and stood transfixed in front of the TV. I already loved animation and animating, but this was next level and it changed me forever. Thanks, Bill.
I have vivid memories of seeing this for the first time on MTV, and i have had the song randomly pop into my head on a regular basis for more than 20 years.
The Best and the Ultimate Bill Plympton Cartoon Classic Ever! One of my of my favorites of all time from one of my favorite animators of all time. I LOVE you, Bill Plympton!
No joke, this was actually uploaded the very same day I searched for this short after seeing it being mentioned in the "Honorable Mentions" section of Jerry Beck's "The 50 Greatest Cartoons" since I was doing a marathon of watching every single cartoon on that list. Thank you so much for uploading at the right time and in such good quality!
2:40 just noticed how the man reacts in surprise when he is eated by the grass mouth. Nice detail. Also great to see this short film in high quality finally being upload in your channel. Hope to see "Guard Dog" next.
Must admit I prefer the one sang by the voice actor of homer simpson. But watching the original i cannot have anything but respect for all the work this has taken. its simply just. simple (in a way) and beautiful.
Thank you for this. It's been more than 10 years since I saw this in college as a part of an animation course, and this has always been a subconscious reminder of how innovative the medium can be.
I am so glad to see this on TH-cam! I remember being transfixed by it when it randomly aired between Saturday morning cartoons in...I want to say the late 80s? Maybe I only saw it once. Possibly twice. But I remember sitting in my little plastic chair too close to the TV for weeks thereafter, hoping to see it again and more excited about that prospect than I was for most of my regular cartoons. For years it was hard to find on the net. And now I can share it in HD on demand with my kids? Glorious. 😂 Thanks, Bill.
When I was a young boy, I saw this animaition in tv,when ground eat the man, i was feel scare and weird,20 more year later...saw homer version and now this agian...every moment is butiful arts!,Then I feel myself "ah...now im old now...still 30 years old..." That day I dont know about you... anyway...nice to see you again Bill! we meet again on this mystical animation once again...❤
Чудесная музыка и великолепный визуал. Помню, как много лет назад увидел эту анимацию в плохом качестве. Здорово, что о ней не забыли. Пробуждает тёплые воспоминания.
I Remember watching this reference on the simpsons but i wanted know where it was come from then i watch an animation of you so i found it,i don't know that it was popular but good job for the animation anyways
Yes, it was THIS film. MTV played it in the early days when there weren’t so many music videos. They played a compilation called Toon-o-rama and also there were shows called Cartoon Sushi & Liquid Television.
Hiya Bill/Plymptoons! I LOVE Your animation! But I heard you were making a film based around the Mash-Up band Big Daddy of the same name, are you still by any chance working on the film? Because I'd LOVE for this awesome film to come out one day! :D Thanks Bill!
This is a big reason I became an animator. Thanks Bill.
EV, thanks so much! Keep drawing! --Bill P.

Wow! I'm 40 now, but I remember watching this as a little kid. I was so confused by it back then! 😂....... I'm still confused by it today 🤔
It is quite trippy for sure.
I remember watching this as a kid on MTV back when the channel was in its glory years. Watching it makes me miss by grandmother.
An all-time favorite, and one of my deepest inspirations. Thank you.

It's a very beautiful song 😢😢
16,000 views is a tragedy. This is brilliance in sight and sound.
Well, we’re working on it. The video has only been up for a few weeks…
I came into this expecting to be weirded out by some bizarre experimental sh*t. I left genuinely impressed at the skill behind this.
I love how those two aren't mutually exclusive.
I never pursued a career in animation. But I did take some classes in college. And bill plympton was an animator we were supposed to know.
So good to see this in such high quality! Thank you!
Simply Beautiful.

Fun fact: there is a Simpsons couch gag where Homer does some moves almost exactly like these

If I recall, Bills characters were also used for a British Nik Naks Crisps ad campaign in the 1990s too.

I think MTV played something similar to this at the time this came out. I wasn’t alive then but I think MTV did something like this.
Yes, it was THIS film. MTV played it in the early days when there weren’t so many music videos. They played a compilation called Toon-o-rama and also there were shows called Cartoon Sushi & Liquid Television.
Omg! They did a parody of this in The Simpsons!
