Skeeter Davis The End Of The World Reaction
    1. I think I like it better than Karen Carpenter's cover
2.The youth of her voice matches the song better
3.This should be part of a movie or something. ( I checked and yes it's def part of some popular culture but nothing super famous)

This song was in the 1999 movie ‘Girl, Interrupted’ with Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie. It was playing in the scene where she found her friend hanged herself in her room.

There is a very famous video game called Fallout 4. In the game you are a survivor of a nuclear holocaust. You were under the ground in a bunker and frozen In time in the 40-50s
There is a guy locked in a radio station playing music for people across the wasteland.
Check out the trailer on TH-cam and also a full playlist of the songs on the ingame radio is available on youtube.

It became a theme song for the Sci Fi miniseries Man in the high Castle
      Modern singer though.

Wasn't aware Karen Carpenter did a version. Skeeter Davis' version is perfection. No one could do better. I enjoy your comments.

It's interesting that Skeeter Davis sounds so much younger. She was actually just over 30 when this was on the charts. (Karen was 23 when she recorded the N&T medley in '73.)

There’s a sweet innocence to Skeeter Davis’ voice which goes better with the message of the song. Jaybriel, I would love to see you react to these: Georgy Girl by The Seekers, Downtown by Petula Clark, and To Sir with Love by Lulu. Thanks! 👍😁

Top 5 of 4 charts.... only time in HISTORY this happened, and has never happened since. Many people don't know that Sylvia Dee wrote the lyrics to this song when she was only 14, the night her father died. Then 35 years LATER she gave them to Arthur Kent to write the music, and this is the result.

It was also recorded in 1963 by singer Brenda Lee, she was called Little Miss Dynamite because if her stature. She had an amazing voice for her height. Had a lot of hits during the sixties such as " I'm Sorry, All Alone Am , Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree", I Wanted To Be Wanted, and many more.👍👍👏🎤🗣️🎶

Skeeter Davis, who is sadly no longer with us, was an awesome singer. Her trademark sound was harmonizing with herself on her records (much like the Carpenters, just not as layered).
One song of hers which is one of my favorites is called "I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know." If you're interested, here is a link: th-cam.com/video/S__-Iy-kbBM/w-d-xo.html.

Liking this version over Karen's is in no way an insult to Karen.
    It's called personnal preference
Skeeters version (IMHO) is hands down the best ever!!!

There's at least one more version, by Agnetha Faltskog (ex-ABBA)...check that out too. The album "My Colouring Book" from which it comes is all oldies, a wonderful listen end to end.

This song has been recorded by many, many people... but Skeeter's version still remains the best. The plaintive innocence and simplicity to her performance and Chet Atkins' production is perfection. The second best version of this, believe it not..for me, is Nancy Sinatra.

I think it's sweet that Karen & Richard includes it in their Oldies' medley. That medley was a tribute to some of their favorite songs and artists growing up, never intending for any of those songs to be released to radio for a possible hit. Only "Yesterday Once More", "Sing" and "Jambala" were released that year in different countries to become possible radio hits, which they all did. So funny. But, I guess only Carpenters fans that were around and already following them from 1970 on would know this. Karen & Richard honoring Skeeter Davis and all the other musical acts in their medley was very sweet, and gave us an indication of who they loved and admired as kids/teens themselves growing up. They, especially Karen, were huge fans of the Beatles, too, hence all the Beatles' covers. When I hear Karen's version I hear a fan of Skeeter Davis (which she most certainly was) fangirling over Skeeter Davis. To me, that's what makes Karen & Richard so special. They loved honoring their "musical heros" with songs and covers. 😊

@@jaybrielakoi7747 that's fine and understandable. I imagine several if us Carpenters, Beatles, Skeeter Davis, etc., etc., fans could be your grandparents. I'm thrilled and think it's wonderful that you're pulling these old songs out of the 50s, 60s and 70s vaults to take a listen. Thank you!

BTW Jay, Agnetha Faltskog (of ABBA) covered this song too, on her "My Colouring Book" oldies album about 15 years ago... don't tell me you've reacted to that too! Agnetha's version of Mike Batt's "Sometimes When I'm Dreaming" from that album is wonderful.
And Karen Carpenter was 23 when the oldies medley came out...

It just sounds like you are back in highschool and "that girl over there" is experiencing her first heartbreak 💔 on her first crush.
We all remember how it was at that time of life when our emotions caused us to think this dramatically. Later on in life some of these thoughts don't really apply that much and that is why I think this version works so well.

IT'S ON THE "B" SIDE OF THE ALBUM, ALONG WITH THE OTHER SELECTIONS IN THEIR OLDIES MEDLEY. -----------SKEETER DAVIS DID THIS IN THE FALL OF '62, ; I HAD JUST TURNED 16 Y/O, A JUNIOR, IN HS. ----------I OWN THE ORIGINAL 45 , STILL TO THIS DAY. -----------------MJL, 75 Y/O

I think the original person that sings a song is always the best version.... It's because the original is the version u know and u are use to hearing it a certain way.. now they are some acception like uncle cracker did drift away even had Dobie Gray in the song with him... Love Hurts by Nazareth it was sung by The Everly Brothers but I think Nazareth version was the best...

BOTH VERSIONS ARE GREAT, AND OBVIOUSLY karen carpenter had the greater voice, one of if not THEE greatest female pop voice of love and romance songs ever.. however, i think the reason why the original version works better is a) the lyrics and skeeter's "younger" sound voice sounds more of a young girl/child's view of the world which is not true or realistic and lost love b) the music in the background is more "old fashioned" and more melancholy and of long ago past that lends itself to the lyrics and the voice of skeeter's, like a old beautiful sad childhood and childhood rhyme one remembers with fondness....
karen carpenter's version is more "modern" with the music layout/background and more mature, thus her version which is not complete i might add, is more of a wise experienced regret of a woman, as opposed to the sad hopeful childlike melancholy of the original version... both are great in different ways..
