That was amazing, the chord progression is so gloomy and desperate, yet energetic. One of the best Elmyra performances I've seen, right up there with those by @jon_gee
Brilliant work man. Totally captivating. I feel the energy and emotions. I have to get into Elmyra’s sequencer. Stunning piece I can listen to again and again and keep getting joy in every moment.
Beautiful sequencing - very simple yet retained interest and movement over the whole thing. Also loved the clarity and edge of the the raw sound - and couldn't agree more about the semitone tuning (especially true for the Lyra). I think you're spot on when you said that the overdrive would determine whether the Elmyra2 is for you. It was good when it got going but as it tipped in and out it could sound a bit thin and harsh like digital clipping eg 3:36
What always amazes me is how your videos feel like wormholes in the fabric of time. I start the video, listen to the music and read the captions and somehow before i realize it, it's already the end of the video.
I was thinking it was 2 minutes in and this jam can't last to the end of the vid, checked time and it was pretty much the end. I think we both fell through the same wormhole in time.
Really love this sound Jay. Would love to hear more of this. A whole album even. Reminds me of Eno's The Big Ship, which I never wanted to end, and made me fall in love with synths.
BEAUTIFUL performance. Owning an Elmyra i know this is not just out of the box random droning, you really worked on this. I will definitely try recreate your routing here to see how it sounds
Love the chords in this, it's a fantastic cinematic synth, it's always in my music somewhere. Can't live witout it. Great sounding video...man after my own heart.
Bravo Jay, just out of curiosity is that an audio interface next too the machine that your using, super cool piece of work you got going on there!!!🤯🤘🤘
I just LOVE this. So the Emyra2 CAN make music. Bit like a violin in the right hands. I did not find it Doomfull but very musical and therapeutic as you kept the same three dominant notes repeating all over. Very simple but clever. Did it take you a long time to sequence that? I have only had my Elmyra2 for two days and can now master the drones. I am learning to sequence now. Looks long winded but when I am into it I am sure it will quicken up. It’s one hell of a synth isn’t it, There are not many components on the pcb but by heck that tiny processor is mind boggling. Thanks for the inspiration.
Didn't take so long to sequence, no, though I wrote out some of the notes in advance to make it a little easier. And thanks so much! Here's hoping you're too busy making great music with it right now to see this.
@@JayHosking Hey Jay. I keep looking at your video dozens of times. I have the Elmyra 2 and just today I have ordered the Sloer reverb unit you are using. ( I always try to replicate those who have inspired me though I like to add my own....I need the start point though. I am an oldie (73) and love what you have done here. Is there anyway I can contact you for how exactly you have patched this up? I want to use your example to merge my own interpretation but I do not know how you did this I do not expect anything for nothing so am willing to pay/ donate.... so as to contact you re " Ambient Elmyra"... But I Love the " crunch " gritty bass parts coming out. They send shivers!!....so good vibes...deep to the bone. Please? How do we contact? Only if you want to! Pete.
During the last reconciliation of the last of the McEtrix supplicants, they chose a new form for him. That of a giant Sloër!!! Many shubs and zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Sloër that day I can tell you! Also, nice sounds! :)
Deeply textural, like this a lot. Think this'll pair nicely with the NDLR and maybe the Makenoise Music Easel as two counterpoint melodies or arps/pads
I've never really been a big fan of ambience music. Turns out, I am, but I'm more an ambience doom music guy. If you're building a live set out of your danceable dark music phase, this would make a great intro before the madness commence.
Can I ask? How long did it take you to be able to produce something so special. Plus I’m interested to know what you think of the Solar 42 ? I had the Lyra 8 but it’s just not musical, so it’s this or the Solar 42. Your track is making me want to buy this little beauty.
This song is the result of the first day I sat down with the Elmyra 2; while it will likely change in the future, the sequencer data is erased when you turn the power off, so I wanted to capture my results from the first day of experimenting. In other words, it's a pretty good device for getting fast results! I haven't tried the Solar 42; I'm curious, but it also looks like a lot of tuning. And like you, I struggled with the Lyra 8. As such, I'm inclined toward the Elmyra, but I'm sure any of the devices can yield awesome results if they fit your approach. And thanks!
« I don’t need another reverb pedal, I don’t need another reverb pedal, I don’t need another reverb pedal, … » (but this one is on my wishlist since the stereo version release so…) Thanks for the video 🙏🖤
Thanks so much! And yeah, I often say that about reverbs and then they get me. The Sloër's a great change from some of the other recent pedals, at least!
Sequencer is very simple. Select the voice, then turn the pitch knob, hit a button, turn it to a new point, hit a button, etc. You can set up different sequencer lengths and pitches for each of the four voices, which is great. It's quite different from the Lyra 8 for me, honestly. A much wider variety of oscillator sounds, a dedicated filter with multiple types, chromatic tuning, four-voice sequencer, overdrive circuit, etc. It shares some DNA with the Lyra 8 but this is a much more melodic and controllable beast. And thanks!
Is it really that similar to the Lyra-8 though? The only similarities are that it's played via metal touchpads and it has a delay. Pretty much every other aspect is vastly different (resonant filters, digital oscillators, chromatic mode, sequencer, preset cards, complex LFOs, utilities, semi-modular interface, per-voice effects). I mean, there are hundreds of synths that have a traditional keyboard, and you wouldn't call them all similar, would you?
@@nyppythose are all really valid points. I guess it’s unique in its own terms, being a mash up of different machines and ideas. i think i’m gonna have to order one 😭😂
It's a cool synth but the sequence is out of this world! Really aspirational. If someone could transcribe the 4 sequences/chord progression I would be eternally grateful
Heya! It's a cycle of 3 chords with a 4 bar melody, so each cycle the chord placement will be different. D, Fsus2, Bbmaj7 (you can choose a sus maj7 for the Bb as well).
Oh man, I don't want this to stop building so bad that I have to insta-play deadmau5 Strobe on max volume right after listening - before even taking the time to write this comment - just to release the awesome energy build up inside 🫵🤘🫶
Mr Hosking you are Magician! Truly! I can't believe how it's possible to get such lush and magnificent sound from these tiny boxes..

That sums it up beautifully. Correct me if im wrong but i believe that's called "skill".

holy hell. I was tiptoeing around getting this thing but oh lord you gone and done it. absolutely marvellous.
beautifully crafted! edit: listened multiple times so far. wonderfully pure, purely wonderful. subbed!
Amazing, you certainly make this synth show it's potential.

I must be on my 20th listen of this now.
Neutral Labs and Walrus need to thank you too, as I couldn't hold off getting both of these this last week.

Got an Elmyra 2 in the post headed may way. I don't have a Sloer but Slotva and a bunch of other impulse-buy pedals that I love. Cannot wait.
Thanks

Phenomenal, as usual.

I want this played at my birthday

@@JayHosking Thanks Jay. That’s really helpful. Leaning towards the Elmyra 2.
I can confirm that sequencer data will be kept between power cycles, starting with the next update (in a few weeks).
amazing sound !
Any tip for the chords? Does it has chord mode ? or u just sequenced with a external keyboard?
I sequenced each voice independently using the pitch knob. It's quite easy on the device! And thanks so much.
Those are individual sequences that form chords, but as of firmware v2.2, there's also a dedicated chord mode.

I own a Lyra-8, how different are these two?
