If you don’t use a balun on a dipole you’re throwing away half of the signal. The balun moves that signal (through the transformer) to the center line, otherwise it gets sucked into ground/ or your shack as RF in the shack. Study how waves propagate through the balun and what happens through the transformer and then you’ll really understand how it all works and why you want/need one.
Josh, Too bad you aren’t a middle or high school teacher. You would be great like a few I had back in the day. They made a concept come alive and clicked in my brain so I wanted to learn what they knew and studied extra hard. You have made some mysterious concepts come alive in this session. I am recommending that all hams in my club view it, young and old alike. Thank you. Dave K8WPE since 1960
What about attaching a Software Defined Radio directly to an antenna, and then running a long USB cable into the shack, thus eliminating the feed line altogether?
Been watching your videos for months (along with hamradio 2.0, smokinape and numerous others) to complement the rote memorization that has come with 'learning' this stuff. 19 minutes into this video and you answered the one question I have yet to find an answer to - "how do I find more information about some of these topics?" I cannot believe I haven't come across the reference to the ARRL handbook sooner!! Buying one right now!! You are the reason I got my Tech and am currently studying for my General license!
My last experiment had weird results. It is an EFHW, but I used SS guy wires, and it radiates PERFECTLY ON 20M. I am getting 2,000 miles away with 5/9.
Josh, I have a 148" RLLW thru an AH4 to my 7300. It basically sucks. Should I put a 9:! Balun between the AH4 and the antenna? should I also add radials connected to the AH4 ground. The AH4 is grounded to an 8' copper ground rod and on to 4 other ground rods. Enjoy your
Maybe you can produce a video on how you set up a mic and what cloudlifter does. Is the cloud lifter in place of a mixer? I have no idea how some of that works . Thanks KF0ALD,.
A tuner is not needed when you use a resonant antenna, the tuner, if needed to get 50 ohms, is only for the radio, all the power that the tuner makes up for the radio to be happy, is eaten by the tuner, it does not make the antenna better.
I feel guilty ... I never got the Extra ticket because I didn't invest in the 20WPM morse requirement... being a mere 'Advanced' op is kind of a badge of honor
That little sound clip that plays when someone donates is super distracting, every time it happens I'm trying to figure out what the first few words are and I completely lose what you're saying and have to back up.
what does balanced even mean and why would we care? from a layman point of view. You jump from saying balanced is good to getting right into ohms and stuff without making it clear why this matters
I learned basic electronics by reading the ARRL Handbook cover to cover several times when I was in Junior High School in the mid 1950's.
I worked the World on a 12 WATT SSB TRANSCEIVER BACK IN THE DAYS.😆😂😅

Great video, Josh. Thanks for unpacking the ARRL handbook. I've had so many questions about baluns, UNUNs and toroids.

A 4:1 BALUN is used when the antenna is at around 40 feet, that is where the feed point will be 200 ohms.
What about attaching a Software Defined Radio directly to an antenna, and then running a long USB cable into the shack, thus eliminating the feed line altogether?
Thanks josh. This explained a LOT without confusing me.
Hey! I appreciate that!

Awesome!! I’m glad it helped!

Hi got a question Can I use a BN-86 Balun on a wire dipole ?
Thanks Josh, this really helped me understand baluns and unun useage.
Glad to see you do this, I've seen so many people make the mistake thinking if they run twin line they are balanced.
Thank you for watching!
Thank You. Many questions were answered today and I sincerely appreciate this 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

I’d first try adding radials.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse Thank you for the quick response. I will try that first
Thank you for all you do for ham radio.

What a great show, learned a lot.
Thanks.
I find the super chat very annoying
Ok
Great video Josh. New mic sounds awesome.
A choke is not a balun. The community needs to stop calling it a balun. It’s a choke - it has a different purpose.

Me too I like the mic !! thumbs up !
I really enjoy these descriptive videos, but they also serve to confirm that it's highly likely that I will never pass the General exam. :)
So I was wrong. Just upgraded to general last month. I keep coming back to your videos time and again to learn more.

Good for you. I’m glad you’re out there. Keep making contacts.

Oh no, freedom of microphone is also gone. Bye Bye SM7B
