October 23, 2008 | World-renowned philosopher Charles Taylor examined the picture that the narrative of Western secularity yields of our present situation, with particular attention to the phenomena of politico-religious mobilization in our time. This is the third of the 2008 Berkley Center lectures on the topic "Narratives of Secularity". The lectures surveyed the master narratives which have underpinned the secularization, explored more adequate ones, and hazarded a picture of the present predicament of religion and spirituality in the West.
Charles Taylor is one of the world's leading scholars working at the intersection of religion, secularity, and modernity. A philosopher open to other humanities and social science disciplines, he has authored many path-breaking books, including The Sources of the Self (1992), Multiculturalism: Examining the Politics of Recognition (1994) and, most recently, A Secular Age (2007). Taylor was for many years Professor for Political Sciences and Philosophy at the McGill University in Montreal, Canada, where he now serves as professor emeritus. He was awarded the Templeton Prize in 2007.

Charles Taylor is obviously related to the singer James Taylor. They look like brothers in appearance. lol. Anyway. Whatever Charles Taylor says in his lectures and presentations sounds interesting given to how he presents it.

The first audience question about a religious feeling of loss to another ideology as foundation to fascism in the USA sounds even more poignant today.
We should have philosopher kings instead of poorly read crooks as representatives.

We don't need "kings" of any sort. We need intelligent humanists(religious or secular) working together for the good of all.

I'm a philosopher, and I thoroughly respect philosophers. But no kings, please. We need decentralized,.distributed, network-based decision-making that preserves exit opportunities and so encourages diversity and social experimentation.

Totally had to quit watching this, sound way toooo low, and the captioning wasn't working very good. Just about impossible for someone even with a mild hearing loss to hear it.

You are completely right. I have no hearing problems, in fact my hearing is great, and I found this incredibly difficult to hear. It doesn't help that he stood so far away from the microphone either.

His mumbling speaking style doesn't help either.

Be grateful that it’s been uploaded. Of course the recording of such talks very often is just improvised without a professional around.
