- Avengers: Age of Ultron is a fun Marvel movie with some excellent character moments obscured by an unruly plot and an overstuffed finale.
But I don’t think I had to be that way.
I believe that if you make one tweak to the film’s titular killer robot, the characters become smarter, the villains become distinct, and the ending becomes far more effective.

If Ultron started out as Vision then infinity war would come full circle with Thanos killing the villians from both Avengers films at the beginning and end.

What I'd love is if Thor pinned down Ultron-Vision with his hammer, allowing Wonda to subdue his consciousness enough for Jarvis to take over.
Then once Jarvis is in control of Vision, he lifts Thors hammer off his body and stands up with it.
Not only does it show Ultron has been defeated, it also shows this new Jarvis-Vision can in fact be trusted.

I just realized that Tony Stark basically reverse-engineered two infinity stones for his personal use; Howard Stark's research on the space stone/Tessaract became the basis for Tony's Arc Reactor and the mind stone was used for Ultron's AI

Kinda yes and kinda no. We'd still have the subtle hints at his family before we finally see them, and seeing them would still help develop his character even if he isn't on screen.

Great idea but I don't think Tony would ever put Asimov's Laws in his robots. Since he armed those robots for them to be prepeared to kill stuff at his will

It could be that it's for the Iron Legion itself, which we really only see trying to protect people in the movie

They weren't AI, so different rules for different tech.
The references to the Masters and "Behold my vision" are icing on the cake. You have a created a smart, thrilling and engaging exploration of how a villain's motivation carries a movie forward. As a plot-driven consumer of entertainment, I can only watch in awe at your brilliance and recreate your Age of Ultron in my head over and over again.

@@thalmoragent9344 am I the only one who sometimes keeps some of Nando's rewrite as headcanon so when someone asks me about the original version I become confused as I remember Nando's version while others remember the original version.This has happened to me for movies like BvS dawn of justice.

I LOVE the Nando videos, but it's important to remember that A LOT happens between the great idea and the finished product - which is how we end up wanting to "fix" movies in the first place. ;)

To be fair, it's a lot easier to fix a problem that arises after the fact when it becomes apparent it is a problem. Many of these things are less obvious on the page, and more obvious either during production or in post production. I do think that there should be more time taken with a script, more passes by eyes who aren't involved in the writing process directly, who could point out potential problems. I doubt this will happen as everything is on a schedule- the actors and directors who are prevented from taking on other projects during the production time, release dates designed to maximize the films profitability during peak seasons- all of this factors in to these large scale, multi-film productions. Time is what they need to really get things right, and time is what they don't allow themselves.

This would have made disconnecting vision from the mind stone in Infinity War much more of a risk. If it doesn't work he could die, or let Ultron take back control.
yeah, and maybe Thanos could use the time stone to reverse the change of Jarvis taking control, bringing back Ultron
It would be interesting if Ultron came to the conclusion that the Avengers were the greatest threat to humanity based on the actions and potential of each member to causing harm on a massive scale.

I suspect this idea, sadly, would double the film's budget. They were saving up for Infinity War.
As someone with film making experience, script supervisors generally maintain continuity while on set, but don’t revise the script in any way. He should be on the writing team.

Another cool moment that could come with your idea: After Vistron (Ultron in Vision) gets freewill, he kills one of the Masters to test if he can. That moment could cause the last remaining Masters to fight against him and turn the tide of the fight.
And maybe that could be QS.

It could make sense, but that would mess up the future of the MCU, since Crossbones is one of the causes of the events in Civil War, Klaue plays a role in Black Panther, and Abomination is set to appear in She-Hulk

I'm very conflicted when I watch your videos because, on one hand, I generally love your ideas and want to hear them, but, on the other hand, your videos make me wish that these changes had been done and it's really frustrating.

What I like about this is - after having watched it several times and thinking about it on and off for a few months - is that it becomes Ultron's movie. Since the team doesn't really have a lesson to learn this time (arguably) - Tony gets one which resolves itself in the movie, and which was kind of inconsequential and I had actually forgotten until I wrote this part of the comment - this would become Ultron's journey, and he somewhat succeeds.
This would not only be a refreshing change for Marvel movies, and a healthy way to keep the pace up, but also (in a real meta moment) precept the audience for Thanos, with a villain's journey being the journey of the movie.
I honestly feel like a movie made with nando will be freaking incredible... He knows how to make things work and create compelling stories as well... I much prefer his version of apocalypse to the actual movie... Hit me up if you want to make a great movie man... ☺☺

This is definitely one of your best doctorings yet. Not only do you fix the problems of the immediate story with this proposition, but the problems of Vision on the whole. The way this changes his role in Civil War could not be overstated. Could you do a follow-up video with that in mind? I'd love to hear your theories on that.

The idea that Jarvis just Trojan Horsed himself into Vision alongside Ultron is a brilliant idea because once he calls Tony "Mr. Stark" as Nando suggested, and they figure out that Jarvis is still in there somewhere, not only are they fighting for their lives, but for the possibility of a powerful new ally.

Love the idea of personalizing the fight and the stakes by making the heroes the object of ultron's destruction.
I never understood filmmakers' need to GO BIGGER BRO: last time a city was under attack, NOW IT'S GOT TO BE A COUNTRY last time the danger was a nuke, NOW IT'S GOT TO BE A METEOR etc etc. That sort of Michael Bay simplicity kinda drags away from focusing on what we've come to love about these movies: the characters and their relationships and struggles, not so much the spectacle.

You know what, this works too. Maybe when hes locked up he can do the same nat did(send a covert message to the team) but this time its with an old ww2 era method or w/e, and it takes both clint and nat to break him out, and maybe the breakout could be interesting too, since well have 2 superspies and 1 supersoldier fighting a horde of robots

I wanted Betty to be in the avengers movies. I never forgot that character. Betty and Bruce is an iconic couple, Natasha and Clint are an iconic couple. We deserved that.

Yeah, people don't seem to understand that the hype surrounding the first Avengers film is 90% because it was the first of its kind, and nothing can recapture that.
Agreed, it's aged really well I think, and the characters really lift the whole thing. Despite it's reputation it has some of the best sequences from the MCU. The Thanos prediction is particularly fascinating now we're so close to Infinity War.
I partially agree with you, but Avengers has really good rewatchability. If it was good because it was the first time anything like that was done, the novelty would wear off.
I just realized that this solves another plot-hole in Age Of Ultron. I always wondered why- during the Korea Chase- Ultron doesn’t plug in one of the little Ultrons into the cradle so he can upload into the vision while the big Ultron is distracting Cap. I mean they are all still Ultron right? Did he only design the big Ultron with the port necessary to connect to the Cradle? That doesn’t seem like the kind of flaw a super-intelligent Computer would make. In your version Ultron can’t connect to the cradle because he doesn’t have the Vibranium yet thus no plot hole. Nice work!

When I saw the trailer of this film I thought Ultron was going to have Wanda haunting the Avengers with nightmares so real they didn't know what reality was. Not just a five minute scene of them being depressed. It seemed that Tony was the only one to be long-term changed by what he saw.

Great idea, but it would be extremely hard to put all of this into a 2 hour movie. Movies like spiderman have problems with just 3 villains. Having 6 villains would be a disaster.
As long as each villain doesn't have a plotline, you can pull it off.

That Defenders video should be pretty cool, but man, I don't know if Iron Fist would work with your usual template of only fixing one problem. It's pretty unsalvageable in it's existing state. Still baffles me that it got released without heavy rewrites.

I actually like this idea alot, would be very interesting to have multiple situations where Ultron is almost forced to follow these rules like in one scenario where say hulk fights abomination and during the fight a peice of rubble is about to hit someone and Ultron is forced to move them out of the way. I.e follow these rules.
could even have it work with the red and blue lighting. say evil Ultron has red face lighting but when he has to follow these rules it turns to blue which is represented of his iron legion protocol. And Ultron haveing to be a villain with 2 different programs controlling him would be really fascinating to watch. I hope someone dose this with Ultron one day
In this case, you could also carry the Masters through into Civil War, Zemo's backstory could be roughly the same with some rewrites, and he could reform the Masters as part of his plan, which would connect the Crossbones fight at the beginning to the Zemo plotline more

Perfect! Except that's exactly the plot of the Danger arc writen by Joss Wheedon in the Atonishing X-men comic, also known as the same guy who wrote and directed this movie.
I like the idea of Ultron's desire to be free from regulations and how it ties into the whole Vision arc because it related back to the original story of Pinocchio I guess.

Woah woah woah, I agree with most of this but I still think that the scovia battle was needed. Ultron was already powered down for this and he won't seem as dangerous if this happens. Also Clint was taken in the first one, I down want him to seem even more useless.

Maybe have Ultron escape when he realizes Vision can beat him, and not have a _battle_ in Sokovia... more like ten or twelve "heavy Ultrons" that now have Stark's no-kill rules purged, so that the Avengers have to take them out one by one while Vision takes on the main one.
And maybe have Clint try, and almost manage, to escape from Ultron, as sort of a back-and-forth with the scenes at Clint's home, just to show off his general bada**ery.

I think he's jointly owned by Universal Studios. Him, The Leader, She-Hulk are in legal limbo atm
They can use him. Universal Studios own *distribution* rights which means they can't make a solo Hulk movie without sharing profits. But Disney/Marvel can *use* all Hulk related characters.
You could include the Taskmaster as a new character in the Masters team. Abomination to counter the Hulk, Klaw and his men to counter Iron Man, Crossbones to counter Captain America, Wanda and Pietro to counter Thor, Ultron is busy with designing Vision. Perhaps Ultron hires Taskmaster to counter Natasha and Clint?
No joke I thought this idea was gonna be implemented in Age of Ultron, I was so ready to see Abomination again.
This is a good idea but I think if this idea were ever implemented and made, people's reaction would be a lot different. It would probably even more sharply divide the film. People wouldn't be able to agree whether that loophole is legitimate or not. To me, it is not: even if "humans are unpredictable," Ultron as a logic would not want to send clearly murderous or destructive humans to the Avengers. At some point, he would have to evaluate which humans he's choosing and he'd have to make a choice to choose dangerous ones, which goes against his programming.

Or if the grand plan was to shove the Ultron out of Vision's head. That way, Ultron could transfer his conscience into other robots or something, and they could have that talk face to face. Though I would also very much like to avoid an 'army of robots' fight. Can't have both.

Why do the twins turn if there is no global extinction plan? That's the only plotpoint, you have not talked about, but the rest of the video is awesome.
That's a good point. They would turn when they realize they are on the bad guy team, after watching footage from the half of the team they weren't involved with. Basically Crossbones and Abomination killing civilians and the Avengers trying to save them gives the twins some perspective.

Probably Ultron could kill one of the Masters to test himself after he has his new Vision body. Seeing how Ultron will kill someone just to see if he can would get the message across that he is crazy and doesn’t care about them.

Love it! But one question- in this version: when and why do Wanda and Pietro change sides?
Maybe once Ultron achieves his final form he starts killing Sokovians, just to see if he can.
Hulk should get exhiled from Earth.
He has to get the Sakaar somehow and the current reason doesnt really work in this rework. This would need to rework a few fights in the MCU such as the Harlem, South Africa, and maybe New York to make Hulk more brutal and a bit more destructive to have a stronger reason for this action. General Ross could be the one influencing the government's choice to do this due to his government position in Civil War, using it to finally get at Hulk. I know this is a big step away from the comics but so is the one in the film.
PS: Great videos as always :)
Maybe during the fight with Vision he just teleports Hulk into a distant galaxy and he just ends up there? Only issue with that is that it opens up a plothole about how Vision could've just done that with all the Avengers.
The problem with wanting Planet hulk is that you’d be taking nerfed MCU Hulk and buffing him to prime World Breaker Hulk.

I would love to hear your thoughts on other heroes you'd introduce into cinematic universes. Like how you'd bring moonkight into the mcu. Or sleepwalker. (I know, who cares about sleepwalker, but I'm I 90s kid so I do)
Well I remember hearing that Nightmare was Scott Dreickson's ideal Doctor Strange 2 villain, so Sleepwalker would fit into that story. I've heard a lot of interesting Moon Knight pitches but he's so tricky.
I have thought about an X- Men in the MCU pitch video but it wasn't all that original, so it didn't go anywhere.

This was awesome, I love the idea, I just disagree with having Hawkeye captured because it would be repeating that of which had happened in the first avengers, so perhaps widow could have put a tracker on the truck instead. Other than that, loved this concept.

Here’s how to fix Ultron: don’t give him a moving jaw. I loved how intimidating the comics and some shows just gave him an open mouth that glowed. With a working mouth, he looks dumb

Ultron is programmed to protect life on earth. I’d like to see how that directive leads to his actions. It’s not interesting if he just ignores it.
Also: any super intelligent AI programmed to optimize a utility function will not want to change that utility function because it would decrease future utility.
We should have had ultron do something AI-ey like cryo-freeze all of humanity so as to preserve human life for al time. Follow his rules so well it backfires.
i mean. the utility function is still the same as in the movie (preserve life by making it metal). just that now there's a constraint. it would make sense that an AI would try to break a constraint to optimize utility.

this was incredibly well made, i love it.
PROS: thor gets to actually do something, avoid the avengers v drones trope which i was hoping to avoid in infinity war 😒, the MCU ultron is a megalomaniac that as you say is built on “control” and would not be able to rationalize pitting the masters against them as he is trying to “save” humanity (i can’t help see him as a omega level vice principal)
CONS: you’ll need WAY more screentime to flesh this out, this definitely conflicts with Whedon’s writing style, honestly sounds more expensive (rights to abomination?, CG seems pricier), pushes out the conflict seeded between Tony and Steve
If think this coild definitely be made without Abomination and Crossbones in it.
You could switch the Abomination for a Hulkbuster Ultron.

Quicksilver would be saving everyone from getting killed by vision like the Red Rush in invincible but ends up dying by vision's hand, which would make a complicated relationship between Scarlet witch and vision.

I really like this version! Only, slight disappointment; When you said that "The Masters" would foreshadow Ultron's end game, i was like, "Oh, shit. He's gonna try and enslave humanity somehow. It won't count as harming humans, and it'll make him the only person with real free will." I much prefer your version though, a beatdown by Vision is much more interesting.

@@Joela393 Agreed, keep the first fight in, with Ultron subtly attempting to avoid harm.
The Avengers would naturally assume that the rules were wiped along with all the other radical changes that created Ultron. Especially after Stark tested for the 2nd & 3rd rules by directly ordering Ultron and possibly attempting mild self harm. When Ultron doesn't respond to either, the assumption is that the rules are no longer in effect.
It would be very clever if the Avengers gradually figured out (through analysis of Ultron' s decisions) that despite the glitches, rule 1 was still in effect.
Once the Avengers understand the limits Ultron has and his overall goal, they could begin to extrapolate his next steps and try to intercept him. This adds an exciting little mystery solving element to the script. The Vision reveal should still be a surprise though.
The best part is that when the inevitable porn parody is made, the writers could retain the same dynamic but have Rule 34 be the last remaining imperative Ultron is bound to. Gotta think ahead, you know?

Minor problem: Tony Stark wouldn't make his Iron Legion unable to kill people, because that's not his MO at all. To be a little on the nose, Iron Man and his toys are basically the perfect metaphor for drone warfare, and the military application of drones is all about being able to kill people on the other side of the planet at no risk to yourself.

This is amazing. One thing, however. What happens to Klaue, and what convinces the Maximoffs to switch sides and join the Avengers?
I figure after the twins see Crossbones and Abomination causing a ton of collateral damage and the Avengers saving people, the twins realize they are on the wrong side. And Klaue can escape like he does in the regular movie.
But would that be a strong enough reason for them to leave and help the avengers?
I mean they’ve seen tonys weapons do destruction too and they now know both sides do collateral damage so they should be conflicted because of the fact that Both sides can/have killed people so they shouldn’t choose either side
There should be a scene where they see innocent people about to get hurt and see tony saving them, then they see he’s not that bad and actually cares about people
+Norman - my thoughts exactly; play with the cheap emotional drama here is the key. A scene were the twins watch an Avenger save a couple of obviously little siblings and gave them a generic wakeup call.
I think it would've been cool to see scarlett witch switch sides while quicksilver stayed behind. Quicksilver thinks about switching sides but is conflicted because Tony stark made weapons yadda yadda and finally decides to switch after seeing klaue amd Ultron doing some messed up stuff. Then have Ultron target scarlett witch when he finds out that quicksilver wants to switch sides. Quicksilver saves Scarlett Witch's life somehow and loses his own in the process. Then have that scene where Scarlett witch is mourning and unleashes her powers.

I like your version because it touches the comic book version a great deal. I like the ending too because Vision is very powerful and was created to destroy the Avengers. So having Ultron go into the body of Vision was a great touch. You got great ideas keep it up and try to make it as a career. God knows we need better writers for movies nowadays. Even though the superhero movies are still holding up well, I still see more humor then action with Thor Ragnarok being the much example of it.
Ultron Making a Counter to the Avengers, Uniting their Villains intro the Masters of Evil make sense.

I completely love the idea you have presented, and I completely agree with this change. I still think that James Spader should portray Ultron because the story was mediocre, however Spader's portrail is perfect.
