    Last year there were lots of reports of manoeuvres between the American and the German Air Force in Alaska where the EF roundly beat the F-22.
    The caveat being that these were dog fights using the gun only. The EF was more manoeuvrable being designed for exactly that whereas the F-22 was also designed for stealth.
    In a real combat situation, this difference would be even greater due to the superior air2air missiles you mentioned. The reason for that is that after the German reunification, the German Air Force inherited some Mig-29s from Eastern Germany that had missiles that were way more advanced than anything the West had. So instead of continuing to improve the AMRAAM system, Germany developed a new missile system.
    Having said all that, you are correct that the F-22 is probably still the superior fighter due to its stealth capabilities and the superior radar. In real life, the F-22 would do everything to stay as far away from the enemy as possible and not engage in dog fights so that it can best play its cards.
    However, technological advances in missile defense could nullify that advantage and increase the likelihood of dogfights again. Apparently there is a lot going on in that direction right now. The US Air Force recently announced some successful tests of laser defense systems that can be mounted on planes. For the time being, the F-22 should still have the advantage though.

    Pretty decent analysis. One thing that is not mentioned, however, is that typically, because of its stealth, F-22s are able to get to the merge (WVR combat) in extremely favorable position, i.e. at the enemy's six o'clock, unlike your graphics which show the merge happening head-on. F-22's very often get their WVR kills completely unobserved by the target, and that makes superior maneuverability or helmet-mounted sights a moot point. Also, while Meteor is indeed a significantly better missile than AIM-120D as far as range and maneuvering potential at long range, the fact that the F-22 can launch its missiles from far higher supercruise speeds helps offset a lot of that advantage (though I suspect not all). It's not a huge deal anyway given the fact that Typhoon won't detect a Raptor until far too late.

      Karl Gruner The AIM-120D isn’t a reliable enough missile against gen 4+ aircraft to maximise the stealth advantage of the F22. The advantage is definitely with the Raptor at BVR but I don’t think radar stealth is the absolute solution it’s often made out to be. The latest generation of IRST tech has really matured and the F22 is an extremely hot aircraft. Against an group of fighters equipped with the latest IRST sensors the Raptor would not realistically be able to close to WVR without detection. No Raptor pilot would ever want to dogfight with a Typhoon, Rafale, or Su-35 as all 3 can at least match the F22 in that arena. This limits the use of the bird to extreme BVR and in this role the missiles limit her effectiveness.

    • @KRGruner
      @KRGruner 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@rickwalker2 LOL... Another armchair "expert" comes out and thinks he knows all about something he has never experienced. You gotta love it! Tsk, tsk... All the data out there is that IRST is OK to a point, but not nearly good enough to make up for lack of stealth. Typical IRST ranges are in the 30 mile range, maybe a bit more under optimal conditions (assuming absolutely clear skies, IRST range though clouds or significant moisture is essentially zero - how about that!) and that's nowhere far enough to ensure detection before WVR. The F-22 can steer well away from that cone, no issues. True enough, the Raptor won't want to dogfight against any other jet (not just the Typhoon, Rafale, or Su-35) because dogfighting is STUPID! Even in WW II, the highest ranking aces (such as Erich Hartman) avoiding dogfighting like the plague, so it's nothing new. Dogfighting will get you KILLED! Does not matter which aircraft you are flying, or flying against. If you had ever been a REAL fighter pilot, you would know that. Now, I would agree there will be instances (rare) where a turning fight might occur, but that is to be avoided if at all possible, and the massive supercruise speed advantage of the F-22 will allow that (avoidance) much more than for other airplanes. Finally, you quite underestimate the effectiveness of the AIM-120D. It's of course not 100%, but it will kill you, especially since it's unlikely you will see it coming (you might get a warning you are locked on, but only a very rough idea from where... Unless you are in an F-35, then you might get a VERY good idea (thanks to DASS). The AIM-120 data presented in the video is good, but it's all for older models of the missile, including very early A and B models. Anyway, you have much to learn, listen to the guys who have been there and done that instead of wildly speculating. Just a bit of advice.

      @@EmperorLionflame The F-15s can still fly outside the kill zone while the F-22 can glide the Amraams to target. The Meteor kill zone range isn’t large enough to stop the Eagle from launching an Amraam and then turning and burning to get away. Furthermore, the F-15 can more than hold its own, especially against the EF at BVR. The F-15 is no slouch at dogfighting, either. In exercises at Red Flag Nellis they won every time in 1vs1 battles against Su-30MKIs. In different exercises the Indians also had their MKIs go up against EFs and take it to them. Not saying that the EF is a bad aircraft, not at all, but it sure isn’t at the same level as the F-22. What’s most important is that the EF can beat every Russian fighter, which is what NATO needs.
      BVR missiles aren’t of much use against the F-22 because the missile seeker itself can’t track and lock onto it. The F-22 has the advantage in every realm of air-to-air combat. The F-22s AESA radar can jam the Eurofighter’s PESA radar. It’s why recently Egypt recently increased its purchase order of Rafales. They learned in exercises that the Su-35’s PESA could be jammed by the Rafale’s AESA. It didn’t come as a surprise as it was already well known that was one of the key advantages of AESA.
      A good example of the Raptor’s dominance are the exercises in Al Dhafa. Raptors, and with rookie pilots, came out undefeated in the exercises, while the Eurofighter got slaughtered by the Rafales. Search here on TH-cam for F-22 Undefeated at Al Dhafa. The F-22 also has a huge advantage of carrying its weapons internally. Not only does external ordnance increase an aircraft’s RCS, it also decreases its agility and speed. The F-22 doesn’t have this problem because its weapons are stored internally and near the center of the fuselage.
      Also keep in mind that in exercises that the F-22 carries the Luneburg lens, which intentionally increases it RCS so that the adversary knows where the F-22 is coming from. In reality the Eurofighter wouldn’t know where it’s coming from and the F-22 would have the edge by positioning itself in a dominant position.

      No match, eurofighter is better. The reason France didn't participate in the first EF-2000 was because they had specific needs that the EF-2000 won't resolve such as a naval fighter which currently the EF-2000 is not (though there's a project to navalize tranche 2 EF-2000's for French, Italian and Spanish carriers).
      The EF-2000 is faster, has a higher load of weapons, maneuverability wise are rather similar, larger operational range and technologically the EF-2000 is way ahead as France do not use NATO systems on their Rafales.
      Also the EF-2000 is meant to be used in a wider range of scenarios meaning it has to be able to operate from bases lacking the support systems modern planes need for daily maintenance even from roads if need it like with the grippen. Meanwhile Rafale is a much more fragile platform.
      Does the rafale has any chance in a 1v1 scenario with all in thir favour for both planes? Sure, is a beautiful piece of French technology, but in real battle with the limitations and complexity that arise during a conflict the EF-2000 is both more durable and flexible.

The speed of the EF is not high enough, compared to the Rafale, to be an advantage because the missiles used go to Mach 4 and have a gate of several tens of kilometers. The maximum take-off weight minus the unladen weight is 14 tonnes for the Rafale and 12.5 tonnes for the EF. The weight of weapons carried is 9.5 tons for the Rafale and 9 tons for the EF. The Rafale is technologically very advanced, it uses NATO technologies such as the Link 16, its radar is one of the best in the world with a capacity for simultaneous engagement of 8 targets. The slightly weak range of this radar is solved with the new RBE2-AESA which equips the last and future Rafale of the French army, and which is considered as the best of Europe. About the fragility of the Rafale, I do not really understand what you mean, the Rafale is a proven plane during many and tough fights. Otherwise, one of the advantages of the Rafale is that it is 100% French, and that in the event of a large-scale war, its production can be increased very rapidly where the states using the EF need pieces from all over Europe. And all this is only theory, in practice, the Rafale is much better than the EF: www.latribune.fr/entreprises-finance/industrie/aeronautique-defense/20120201trib000681583/l-eurofighter-a-perdu-tous-ses-duels-face-au-rafale-.html

    Pretty fair argument here it’s quite well detailed and clearly research was put into it. I have nothing to add except for the amraam kill ratio. While it is true that the AMRAAM has a rather low kill ratio thanks to modern jamming maneuvering and such, this goes for every missile, including the new hypersonic R-37 which is boasted to be one of if not the best air to air missile. This is because missile kill ratio is entirely dependent on the pilot. The pilot has to position his or herself at high altitude and high speed, the higher the speed the more range and same with the altitude along with more of a chance to kill because it loses and has more energy. Along with TWS lock allowing the AMRAAM to not be detected in flight by the Eurofighter until 6-3 miles. By then it’s either too late, or the EF has to rely on jamming which is useless at those ranges the missile will achieve burn through, so likely the Raptors will get a 40-50 mile range kill with the AMRAAM and again this also depends on pilot training and tactics

  • @Phos9
    @Phos9 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    TVCs are typically only used for maneuvering at low air speeds because at high air speed they cause the plane to pitch relative to its center of mass rather than center of lift.
    The eurofighter’s engine is going to be its biggest asset, having a much longer service interval giving it a much higher ready rate.

    F-35 vs SAAB Gripen (E/F).
    (Maybe some fudging as the F-35 is still generally considered not to be fully cimbat capable in all models yet).
    In addition to head to head, there's total cost/running cost, logistics, pilot fight training and availability and usability. The Saab Gripen can be paired with a integrated air defence and AWACs system (Saab sells a complimentary AWACS aircraft, although the Gripen can data link with it's compatriots). And the Gripen is a lot faster and could also catch fleeing/returning F-35's, that have poor rear facing stealth and apparently a large heat signature.
    Both planes are available on the Western market and come from completely different design and strategic philosophies.
    Which is better as an overall package not just an individual plane?

      I'm sure the Gripen is a solid, dependable plane, but it is 4++ gen. Integrating with AWACs and an air defense system is the only chance it might have against an F35. The 35's rear stealth aspect isn't poor, it just isn't as stealthy as the front aspect. In the same vein, it doesn't have a large heat signature, though that is probably the least stealthy part of the plane. I think it would be more useful to compare the Gripen with the Rafale and Eurofighter.

Also, AWACS airborne radar and control airplanes with their super-powerful radars would be on site sharing targeting data with the F-22's, unless the engagement was a total surprise. In a major combat operation the F-22 fighters will never fight by themselves. All this would augment the already impressive capabilities of the F-22.

As it's the current weakspot in it's air superiority role when going up against targets that can fire off their center line via helmet targeting.

It is too late to restore the production of F-22 as it will slow down F-35 roll out not just for the US but also for the US allies and there is no point in doing so. Very pragmatic look at both fighters. One gripe I do have is the ground attack take. I believe the typhoon is, far and away, the better platform for AtoG. I don’t believe the Raptor has ever been combat proven in that role. If I recall correctly, the US tested the Raptor for AtoG but, decided against it because of the mods that would be made and the variables that don’t really need consideration. Instead, the USAF decided to rely on the F-15E to take care of that, while the Raptors would provide top cover.
